Blizzard have posted an extensive response to the community reaction to the addition of the WoW Token in Wrath Classic. They delve into the significance and impact of Real Money Transactions, the amount of bans related to it, the value of gold itself, and more.

Greetings.

We want to take a moment to talk about WoW Token in Wrath of the Lich King Classic.

The best way to start is to simply say that this wasn’t something we arrived at lightly. For the entirety of Classic so far, the WoW Classic team has been very resistant to the idea of adding WoW Token to any form of Classic in the Western regions (NA and EU). When WoW Classic started in 2019, adding something like token felt unimaginable to us, and that continued to be true for us–even late into Burning Crusade Classic–for a few reasons:

  • In Vanilla WoW, the scarcity of gold is a major factor in how you approach your journey in Azeroth. From saving to get your first mount at 40, to picking and choosing which skills you wanted to learn while leveling so you could afford a new weapon or piece of armor. Later on at level 60, some form of time investment is needed to “maintain” a character in an ecosystem where flasks, resistance potions, and elixirs are such a major part of the game, and resources are scarce and highly contested. This was true all the way through Burning Crusade, where potions and flasks could represent a significant weekly expense and the resources required to make them were still quite difficult to obtain.
  • It just didn’t feel “Classic”. It felt jarring, out of place, and was antithetical to what most of us wanted to relive about those early years of WoW.

However, what we want to do from a design perspective and what we need to do for the good of the community aren’t always aligned, and this is one of the more difficult things about maintaining a large online game like Wrath Classic. When we really looked at the state of things in Wrath Classic, and how different players approach the game, we saw that we cannot cause the demand for gold to be lower. The impact of illicit RMT is beyond just buying gold; it’s the entire black market that revolves around gold sales. The concept of bots gets thrown around a lot, but it’s not just “bots” that fuel this, it’s compromised accounts, credit card fraud, scams, hacked clients, and the tools that illicit third parties use to fuel the engine that is the RMT trade.

We hear folks say things like “just ban the bots” a lot. We ban tens of thousands of bots a week. It’s not visible to you just how much we do, and that is absolutely another problem in itself; we need to be better at surfacing these actions (more on this later). The truth is we’ve never been better and more effective at identifying and actioning malicious accounts, and our Game Security Operations (GSO) team that handle these actions are iterating and innovating on a nearly daily basis.

Unfortunately, in the history of WoW, the people perpetrating this illicit trade have also never been better at coming up with new methods, schemes, farms, and exploits to work around our efforts. As much engineering and analytics effort as we put into this, illicit RMT “workshops” put the same amount in, or more, and there are hundreds, if not thousands of these workshops out there all working around the clock to develop new technologies and techniques to counter our new technologies and techniques. It’s an arms race, and it never, ever ends.

We will never completely beat “bots” or illicit RMT. It’s an unwinnable war as long as there is money to be made by third parties. The ubiquitous nature of this type of thing in online games is an objective fact. It has always been a part of WoW, and every other popular online game for the past 25 years, and it will always be a part of online games going forward. It’s frustrating to fight this fight, but we will not stop fighting it.

While we can’t completely “win” the war, what we can do is mitigate the impact it has on the game. Is WoW Token the be-all and end-all to solve this? No, but it is a tool. It’s just one tool, though, among many. There is clearly a demand for gold for certain types of players, and that demand is only increasing. So, we are engaging a tool that we’ve used before to help mitigate the impact that illicit RMT has on the game. The more tools we employ, and the less lucrative we can make it for third parties to do what they do to make a profit, the less likely it is that new malicious actors enter the illicit RMT scene, and the more likely that existing malicious actors will exit the business. Ultimately, it’s taking incremental steps and using a multitude of tools that will reduce how impactful those third parties will be in Wrath Classic and beyond.

Wrath Design and the “Value” of Gold

Circling back to what was mentioned earlier about why WoW Token feels like a tool we should deploy now, we have to look at the base design of Wrath of the Lich King. Ultimately, this is what convinced us to reconsider WoW Token after resisting and refusing this path for so long. In Wrath Classic, your normal weekly activities are, for the most part, self-sustaining. Buying potions, flasks, reagents, and other normal necessities of endgame can be subsidized entirely by mostly just playing the game normally. Doing your usual weekly raid, a few dungeons, or a few dailies a week will net even the most fervent and well-prepared characters more gold than they would need to maintain themselves. Simply put, gold is more plentiful, and the base design of Wrath minimized the focus on needing to “farm” to support normal play.

When we considered that, we realized that the introduction of token wouldn’t be a temptation for most regular players to buy to help support their usual everyday gameplay. It’s simply not impactful to the average player who logs in, raids a few days a week with their guild, does a few dungeons and dailies, and then plays other games in between those activities. There’s no friction in that player’s experience that would tempt them to buy a token just to keep themselves afloat.

Better Visibility into Exploitative Account Actions

As mentioned earlier, we need to improve the visibility around what we do. We posted some weeks ago that we banned over 120,000 malicious accounts in World of Warcraft alone in a large wave, but those large waves that we talk about are actually a very small portion of the overall actions we take on a week over week basis. Using just the past two weeks as an example, here are the actions our GSO team have taken:

  • Total Exploitative Battle.net Account Closures: 248,105
  • Total Exploitative World of Warcraft Account Closures: 73,057

This is just the last two weeks, and this is what our efforts look like very regularly, week-in and week-out. It’s an enormous effort and it’s many, many individuals’ full-time jobs to do this. This is an issue of sheer, staggering scale. We have the tools, and those tools are effective, but the malicious actors come right back with new and different methods every time. All that being said, we need to post these things more, and that’s something that our team wants to be able to surface more often.

Thanks you for reading, and thank you for your feedback.

The WoW Classic Team

It's really not that hard to see bots being bots. Like it's not. They're not smart. They're not adaptive. They have zero entropy.

Blizz could pay 3 or 4 people minimum wage to /who farm instances and put a camera into the instance and ban the bot when they saw them. They could then ban every account that the bot touched.

I can't understand how people argue that this isn't possible.

Blizzard announced the timing of the Icecrown Citadel buff to make things easier for players. It will start on December 5th/6th, and as expected Hellscream's Warsong for Horde and Strength of Wrynn for Alliance will start at 5% and ramp up by 5 every two weeks.
      ICC (Source)
We plan to initialize the power increase in Icecrown Citadel on 6 December.
It will start as a 5% buff, and it will increase by 5% every two weeks until it reaches the max of 30%.
As a reminder-- the buff is optional. Any player can always choose to remove it from themselves.

We had  the opportunity to talk to WoW Classic developers about all things Cataclysm, Wrath and Season of Discovery! Our own Crix dove deep into the matter with Senior Game Producer Josh Greenfield and Lead Software Engineer Nora Valletta, so let's get right to it!
      Season of Discovery
XP gains are not being changed, so the level 25 cap should be reachable very quickly.  Mob damage is being increased in the open world as well to compensate for the power of runes, however, HP is not.  No specifics on phase 1 duration, but "a number of weeks, probably more than a month, less than 3-4 months".  The original unarmored racial mount models will be rewarded from the Ashenvale outdoor PvP event (but only usable in Ashenvale). Runes are soulbound.  Certain runes are only usable in certain slots (like Metamorphosis in the glove slot).  An example of a discovery: an object in the world giving hints of where to look for the next clues. They are not randomly generated or placed, which is why they did not want a PTR, so players could discover them on their own (for a while at least).  Some runes are easy to discover, like just finding a chest, but others are at the end of a chain spanning multiple zones (like Metamorphosis for example). It seems the "better" aka more impressive runes will be more difficult to find/take more time.  There are hundreds of discoveries to find. There will be multiple ways to find a specific rune, but the discovery method will be different.  You will need other players for some of the discoveries. An example given was you'd need two healers for a ritual to release a dead person's spirit to the Shadowlands, and those involved would get their own class's rune at the end.  There may be discoveries that take you into the Blackfathom Deeps raid.  Even only getting the tutorial rune will be enough to be strong enough until the level cap.  Warlock and Shaman tanks should be relatively as strong as other tanks, but maybe not in all situations.  Warsong Gulch will be part of phase 1, but you won't be able to get all the ranks.  There will definitely be adjustments to level 60 raids, but it's too soon to say what.

      Classic Era/Hardcore
The new Self Found option won't require separate servers, it will just be an option on character creation. You can disable the option at any time, but you can't re-enable it after that. There will be a special badge/"buff" (presumably without any actual benefits) signifying you made it to 60 in Self Found.  No fresh servers planned.

      Cataclysm Classic
Whether LFR makes it into Cata is still being discussed. The door isn't closed, but they're prefer not to.  A major talent/class overhaul was considered, but probably won't happen, with smaller tactical changes more likely. Zul Aman and Zul Gurub will most likely come in a mid-patch update between launch and Firelands, it won't be a full phase.  One of the things they're most excited for is the Titan Rune implementation for Cataclysm dungeons. The are adjusting the cadence of patches and raid releases, speeding things up. There's an assumption that part of the reason Cataclysm was divisive was because of the slow pace of patches/raids (especially Dragon Soul).  They're still thinking about whether to change anything regarding the 10 vs 25 man raid difficulties, as there were many pros and cons to the system.  There will be changes to guilds, de-focusing the reward structure that favored mega guilds.

      Wrath Classic
There are currently no plans for TBC or Wrath Classic Era, but they are open to feedback. "Never say never." They have not decided on when the Icecrown Citadel nerfs/ player buffs will arrive. They did it too early with Serpentshrine Cavern so they learned from that, and will wait for people to say that they're ready for them before implementing the for ICC.  Ruby Sanctum is coming early 2024.

Today's hotfixes cover three WoW editions, with an Arena removal in retail, flight-path disconnect (and death) fixes for Classic Hardcore as well as Dungeon Finder tweaks and more for Wrath Classic!

      Player versus Player
Blade’s Edge Arena has been temporarily removed from the Arena rotation, for a terrain issue to be addressed. WoW Classic Era and Hardcore
(With realm restarts) Added additional protections to prevent some deaths via flight-path disconnects. Now when you take a taxi, a protection aura is placed on you that prevents all damage, your hearthstone cooldown is reset, and your hearthstone spell is insta-cast. Developers’ notes: We have alerts in place that will help us as we continue to monitor and investigate this issue. Wrath of the Lich King Classic
Adjusted the logic controlling the levels at which player-characters are allowed to queue for dungeons in the Random Dungeon Finder so that it is closer to the range displayed, which was also adjusted. Now, all classic dungeons should allow a range of roughly 8 levels: from 3 levels below the level of the final boss to 5 levels above. Burning Crusade dungeons should now allow a range of 3 levels below the end boss to 3 or 4 levels above it, and Wrath dungeons allow a range that starts at 3 levels below the end boss. Developers’ notes: The most noticeable effect here is that the minimum level allowed for some dungeons has gone up slightly. This is intended to address situations that arise for players whose level was significantly lower than the rest of the group. Fixed a bug that could prevent Masked Orphan Matrons from starting the Headless Horseman’s fire events in various towns. Fixed an issue that sometimes caused Talon King Ikiss in Sethekk Halls to not grant completion credit for the dungeon in Random Dungeon Finder. Fixed a bug that prevented Death Knights’ tier 10 Sanctified Scourgelord 4-piece damage bonus from working properly. The “Sinister Calling” step has been removed from the “Hallowed Be Thy Name” achievement. Developers’ notes: We’ve been working on a permanent fix for the underlying issue here, but we want to alleviate the immediate concern for players with Hallow’s End already underway.

Blizzard announced that they increased the hourly instance limit for the Headless Horseman, doubling it earlier today. This is for Wrath Classic, as the previous limit was 5 an hour.
      Instance Limit (Source)
Earlier today, we doubled the hourly instance limit for the Headless Horseman event. You should now only hit this limit if you attempt more than 10 instances in an hour.

Here come some new Wrath Classic hotfixes, as well as a spawning reduction for Classic Era/Hardcore!
      October 20 (Source)
      WoW Classic Era and Hardcore
Undead enemies in the tunnels just outside the entrance to Deadmines now have a more reasonable spawn rate. Wrath of the Lich King Classic
Fixed an issue preventing the weekly raid quest from being offered after the weekly reset. All versions of Ashen Verdict reputation rings are now Unique-Equipped. The 10-player instance Upper Blackrock Spire was unintentionally listed in the Random Dungeon Finder and has been removed. Fixed a bug that prevented the use of mounts that are items only.
