Frost Death Knight Class Changes and Explanations on War Within Alpha: May 14th

Recommended Posts

Frost is on the Death Knight tuning table this time around! There's new talents throughout the three and even two new capstones, as well as Breath of Sindragosa, Frostscythe and other skill improvements.

Hello, Death Knights–

This week’s Alpha update includes another round of changes for Death Knights – this time focused on the Frost tree. Like our last round of changes for Unholy, we looked at talents that felt more appropriate to be baseline for the spec and talents that worked better as 1 rank instead of 2. Notably, we made Fatal Fixation and Rime baseline, reduced Frostwhelp’s Aid, Enduring Strength, and cut both Cold-Blooded Rage and Invigorating Freeze and reduced their new talents to 1 rank.

The goal with the above changes is to cut down on build friction allowing for more customization as you spec through the tree. These changes alongside other talent movements and new pathing connections should help create a better experience for build variety.

We’ve also created a variety of new talents and added 2 new capstones that focus on your auto-attacks which should help give some better sustained damage outside of Pillar of Frost windows. These talents also complement both Obliteration and Breath of Sindragosa builds and add some unique gameplay that expands on the Shattering Blade talent node.

We’ve added Razorice to the targets unit frame to allow easier tracking on when to use Frost Strike. Frostscythe has also seen an update to move it out of the regular rotational rune spender to a big heavy hitter on a medium cooldown. Its rune cost has been increased to 2 and its damage has been greatly increased and is always guaranteed to critically strike. It also has unique mechanic that reduces its cooldown when you consume Killing Machine which has some fun synergy with the suite of new auto-attack talents we’ve added to help your Killing Machine procs.

Lastly, we increased Breath of Sindragosa damage to compensate for the loss of uptime from our first round of changes which should lend itself to a burstier playstyle with less focus on “infinite” duration buffs. We are keeping an eye on its current Runic Power cost which is unchanged since its increase in Dragonflight. From our internal testing, we’re seeing 30-40 second breaths, based on situations but the are many scenarios where it can feel extremely tight as you wait for Runes to replenish, which means we may need to look at its cost per second and pulling out some runic power generation elsewhere.

We would love your feedback on how the current iteration of Breath of Sindragosa feels on uptime. Tangentially, we still have some work we’d like to do on Obliteration build resources especially as it pertains to Runic Power consumption as it can still be flooded a bit inside cooldowns.

Thank you for the continued feedback. Our next round of changes will be focused on Blood updates, Unholy, and Core talent iteration based on feedback we’ve received so far.

And here are the actual changes from the development notes:

    • Frost
      • New Talent: Shattered Frost – When Frost Strike consumes 5 Razorice stacks, it deals 50% of the damage deal to nearby enemies. Deals reduced damage beyond 8 targets. Available as a capstone talent after Shattering Blade.
      • New Talent: Arctic Assault – Consuming Killing Machine fires a Glacial Advance through your target. Available as a new capstone directly after Obliteration.
      • New Talent: Smothering Offense – Your auto attack damage is increased by 5%. This amount is increased per stack of Icy Talons you have and can stack up to 2 additional times.
      • New Talent: Icy Death Torrent – Your auto attack critical strikes have a chance to send out a sleet of ice dealing Frost damage to enemies in front of you.
      • New Talent: The Long Winter – While Pillar of Frost is active, your auto-attack critical strikes increase its duration by 1 second, up to a maximum of 5 seconds.
      • Frostscythe has been redesigned – A sweeping attack that strikes all enemies in front of you for Frost damage. This attack always critically strikes and critical strikes with Frostscythe deal normal damage. Deals reduced damage beyond 5 targets. Consuming Killing Machine reduces the cooldown of Frostscythe by 1 second. Now has a 30 second cooldown and Rune cost increased to 2 (was 1).
      • Rime is now a baseline ability learned at level 21.
      • Breath of Sindragosa damage increased by 25%.
      • Chill Streak can now bounce off the Death Knight if a second enemy target isn’t found.
      • Enduring Strength is now a 1-point talent. Strength increased to 20% (was 10%).
      • Frostwhelp’s Aid is now a 1-point talent. Now grants 8% Mastery per target hit (was 4%).
      • Killing Machine now stacks 1 additional time.
      • Everfrost is now learned in gate 1 directly after Howling Blast.
      • Frostwyrm’s Fury position moved to gate 2 and located directly after Icecap, Frostwhelp’s Aid, and Enduring Strength.
      • Absolute Zero shifted up to gate 3 unlock positioned directly behind Frostwyrm’s Fury.
      • Shattering Blade is now available after Avalanche.
      • Rune of Razorice now displays the debuff on the enemy nameplate.
      • The following talents have been removed:
        • Fatal Fixation
        • Cold Blooded-Rage
        • Invigorating Freeze
      • Horn of Winter is now positioned in Fatal Fixations old location.
      • Empower Rune Weapon is now located in Horn of Winter’s old location.
      • Obliteration has replaced Cold-Blooded Rage.

We have more improvements for Remix today! The rewards keep ramping up as the hyperspawn farm spots keep being removed, and plenty of activities and daily quests have received a new Cache reward with a lot more Bronze in it. There's also fixes for gens, bosses and achievements, with adjustments to Cata Classic as well.
      May 23 (Source)
      WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria
Normal scenarios, Normal dungeons, Heroic scenarios, Heroic dungeons, and daily Infinite Bazaar quests now award a Cache containing 5x as much Bronze as before. Developers’ notes: We intend for players to earn more Bronze as you level up, so you can more easily start purchasing upgrades and rewards. At level 70, these caches now award 8750 Bronze (this was previously 1750 Bronze). Fixed an issue where the Celestial Court bosses on the Timeless Isle would occasionally despawn. Fixed a bug affecting the scaling of certain Tinker gems. Putrid Waste enemies in Throne of Thunder no longer deal extreme amounts of Putrify damage. Brewmaster Blanche now queues you for A Brewing Storm when asked. The Paragon of the Mists title is now account wide. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where boosted characters were not properly learning their class and spec’s Armor Proficiency. Fixed a bug with achievement completion tracking for the meta-achievement Classic Dungeonmaster. Death Knight Brutal Gladiator gear on the Outland Armor Quartermasters in Stormwind and Orgrimmar has been discounted so that their prices match those of other classes. Mor’norokk the Hateful can no longer be erroneously killed by players on the quest “On Second Thought, Take One Prisoner”. Fixed an issue that was removing the Dormus’ Rage aura from players who were teleported to Feralas.

Blizzard has further updated the Skyriding Talent tree in the latest War Within Alpha build. Find out what's new!
Here is a preview of the tree from last week's War Within Alpha Build. You've had all the Skyriding abilities listed at the top and were given just enough "Dragon Power" to unlock all the talents with two "free" choice nodes located on the right side.

Skyriding Talent Tuning in War Within Alpha Build 54774
Some Skyriding talents have been updated in the latest build:

Ground Skimming- When skyriding near the ground, you regenerate 1 Vigor every 30 15 sec. This effect does not occur while affected by Thrill of the Skies unless Swift Skimming is learned. Bronze Timelock- Mark a waypoint on your positional timeline. Use Bronze Rewind to rewind to this location. Can only be used in the Dragon Isles. Whirling Surge- Spiral forward a great distance, increasing speed. Whirling Surge evades Wingshredders and dismounts airborne enemy players Skyriding Basics- While falling from a high location, your mount extends its wings to propel you both forward. Pointing yourself downward grants more momentum. Evening out can transfer that momentum forward. Pointing yourself upward slows you down. When at your slowest, you will start to fall slowly toward the ground. You also gain access to the following abilities: Surge Forward Flap forward. Surge Forward evades Scalechillers, Scalechargers, and other obstacles encountered in time trials and races. Skyward Ascent Flap upward. Aerial Halt- Flap back, reducing forward movement. After activating Aerial Halt, experience a brief moment of weightlessness as the effects of gravity are reduced for 4 sec. Skyriding Proficiency
In the most recent TWW Alpha build, the Skyriding tree has changed a bit. Dragon Power [PH] has been renamed to Skyriding Proficiency and the tree layout has been simplified. It now has 6 tiers.
You will gain Skyriding Proficiency as you level up, but we currently cannot create low level characters on the PTR, only pre-made Level 70 template characters, so we cannot tell at which level you will gain Skyriding Proficiency.

      Skyriding Talents in War Within
The tree now has 6 tiers of power (down from 9)
      Tier 1
Take to the Skies - Your Vigor is increased to 4. Tier 2
Dynamic Stretching - Your Vigor regeneration rate is accelerated to 1 vigor every 25 sec while grounded. Second Wind - Reach within for untapped reserves and instantly generate 1 Vigor. Max 3 charges. Instant, 3 min recharge. Thrill Chaser - Thrill of the Skies generates 1 Vigor every 10 sec. Tier 3
Restorative Travels - Your Vigor regenration rate is accelerated to 1 Vigor every 0 sec while grounded. Tier 4
Aerial Halt - Flap back, reducing forward movement. after activating Aerial Halt, experience a brief moment of weightlessness as the effects of gravity are reduced for 4 sec. Instant, 10 sec cooldown Ground Skimming - When skyriding near the ground, you regenerate 1 Vigor every 15 sec. Tier 5
Dragonriding Learner - Your Vigor is increased to 5. Tier 6
Beyond Infinity - Your Vigor is increased to 6. Yearning for the Sky - Your Vigor reeneration rate is accelerated to 1 Vigor every 15 sec while grounded. At Home Aloft - Thrill of the Skies generates 1 Vigor every 5 sec. On the ride side, you have choice nodes that are free and do not cost Skyriding Proficiency.
The first choice node lets you enable/disable Riding Along. The second choice nodes lets you pick between Whirling Surge and Lightning Rush.

Reddit user Maleficent-Till6391 maxed out their cloak's stamina in MoP Remix and discovered it can't exceed 200K.
The Cloak of Infinite Potential isn't as limitless as advertised. One player managed to collect 200,000 Stamina and used theInfinite Thread of Stamina, but it didn’t increase their Stamina further. The cloak should theoretically be limited only by the 64-bit signed integer limit, which is 9,223,372,036,854,775,807.

For those interested, here are the player's cloak stats:

200,000 Stamina translates to 13,704,440 health. With the Bone Shield and MoP Remix consumable, it increases to 15,667,882, according to the OP.
Here are the player's stats with and without the cloak.

With a minor 10.2.7 fix we move right into the Remix stuff, as there's improvements to rare elite respawn and treasure, quests, dungeons and the open world. We also have Cataclysm Classic fixes, as honor vendors return, the high level PvP gear gets downgraded, quests get improved and more.

      Non-Player Characters
Doc Nanners in Valdrakken will again offer players "A Cataloger's Paradise" upon reaching Renown 8 with the Dragonscale Expedition. WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria
Added clarity to the quest "The Great Water Hunt" to speak with Mudmug before gathering water. Nostwin now sells Glyph of Shadow for Priests. Fixed an issue preventing the quest "Where are My Reinforcements?" from proceeding as expected. Improved the respawn rate and treasure from rares and rare elites across Pandaria. Increased the amount of bronze and raised the drop chance for threads of time from airborne bronze. Fixed an issue where players who faction-changed could not use the group finder for dungeons and scenarios. Fixed an issue preventing the quest “Riding the Skies” from granting the appropriate Cloud Serpent mount. Fixed an issue causing Wise Mari in the Temple of the Jade Serpent to not spawn Corrupt Living Water as intended. Hutia was out of control in the Jade Forest, and has been convinced to relax a bit and stop hitting so hard. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed a bug preventing Diabolical Plans from dropping in Ashenvale for Horde players wanting to do “Never Again”. Cataclysm Honor Vendors should now be available in Stormwind and Orgrimmar to purchase ilvl 352 Blue PvP Gear for Honor Points. Conquest and Elite Conquest vendors will not sell anything until Arena Season 9 begins with next week's regional resets. Fixed a bug with the Thirty Tabards Fixed a bug preventing Engineers and Alchemists from making discoveries while crafting. Crafted “Vicious” gear that was unintentionally created at item level 377 has been adjusted to item level 339. In "Stonefather's Boon", the Stonefather's Boon buff duration has been reduced to 10 seconds (was 3 minutes). Fixed some quest issues. Erunak Stonespeaker should now still be visible to players who have advanced further in the quest line at the original location to turn in “Call of Duty”. “All or Nothing”, “Blood and Thunder”, and “Defending the Rift” should no longer fail to complete if you are sitting or mounted.
