General Information

Below, we give you a brief overview of the abilities that Murky has access to. You should read these ability descriptions before reading further, because the other pages of the guide assume that you have a basic knowledge of Murky's abilities.

About the Author

Oxygen is a veteran of the MOBA genre, which he has been playing for nearly 15 years. He has coached some of Heroes of the Storm's most prominent North American players and teams alike, including Team Liquid. As a Master player, he enjoys playing all Heroes and roles.

1. Slime

Deals 86 (+4% per level) damage and applies Slime on nearby enemies for 8 seconds, slowing them by 20%.

Deals 210 (+4% per level) damage to enemies who are already Slimed.

Slime Icon Slime instantly damages nearby entities, applying the Slimed debuff to non-structures hit for 8 seconds. Slimed foes have their movement speed reduced by 20% and take 150% more damage from Slime.

Slime is Murky's bread and butter. It should aggressively be used on-cooldown whenever you are in range of anything hostile. In lane, it is possible to hit an entire typical Minion wave with the ability by placing yourself directly on top of the Wizard-type Minion. Against Heroes, the slowing effect is useful at all stages of the game for body blocking, as its long uptime allows you to remain in front of your target, unless you are slowed or otherwise prevented from doing so. During the later stages of the game, Slime becomes an important synergetic element of the Wrath of Cod Icon Wrath of Cod talent, as it provides a hefty 35% extra damage to Pufferfish Icon Pufferfish.

An important aspect of Slime to consider is that its damage is significantly increased against foes that have already been afflicted by its debuff. You should always try to repeatedly hit Slimed targets as to benefit from this quality.

2. Pufferfish

Spit out a Pufferfish at the target point. After 3 seconds, the fish will blow up for 410 (+4% per level) damage. Enemies can attack the fish to prevent it from exploding.

Pufferfish Icon Pufferfish causes Murky to toss a Pufferfish at a target location. The Pufferfish remains at this location and detonates after 3 seconds, damaging entities around it. The Pufferfish can be destroyed by 3 Basic Attacks before it detonates to prevent it from dealing damage. Minions, structures, mercenaries, and summons can not attack the Pufferfish.

Pufferfish is one of the hardest-hitting abilities in the game. It is, however, difficult to succesfully hit individual foes with it. When it is not sidestepped, it might just see itself destroyed. One way of preventing your opponents from attacking the Pufferfish is to stand directly on top of it, making clicking through to attack it impossible. The technique is especially useful in the early stages of the game.

From Level 7 and on, the Compressed Air Icon Compressed Air talent turns Pufferfish into a strong zoning tool, as it can be used to cut off escape and engagement routes. Beyond Level 10 — when Octo-Grab Icon Octo-Grab is acquired — landing an unconditional Pufferfish hit becomes only a matter of quickly following up with Octo-Grab.

Since neither structures nor minions attack the Pufferfish, it can be used as a soft sieging tool, granted that there are no Heroes around to remove it.

3. Safety Bubble

Becomes Invulnerable for 2 seconds. While active, you cannot attack or use abilities.

Safety Bubble Icon Safety Bubble cleanses movement-impairing effects off of Murky and causes him to become Invulnerable for 2 seconds. During this time, Murky can not attack nor use abilities, though he is free to move about.

Safety Bubble is Murky's main defensive ability. Since it renders him completely invulnerable, and instantly so, it can be used to avoid dangerous inbound abilities. A less-known aspect of the ability is that it can also be used to disjoint inbound projectiles, such as those from Basic Attacks. The fact that it removes movement-impairing effects (as well as providing a temporary immunity to them) can be used offensively, allowing you to move through lingering area effects that would stop other Heroes in their tracks. Murky players become extremely difficult to peel when keeping track of strong crowd control cooldowns only to completely avoid them with Safety Bubble. The Bubble Machine Icon Bubble Machine talent is especially useful in this regard.

4. March of the Murlocs

Command a legion of Murlocs to march in a target direction, each one leaping onto the first enemy Hero or Structure they find. Each Murloc deals 125 (+4% per level) damage and slows its target by 15% for 5 seconds. Murlocs deal 50% damage to Structures.

March of the Murlocs Icon March of the Murlocs causes Murky to summon 35 baby Murlocs from behind him to slowly move in the general target direction after channeling for 1 second. The baby Murlocs leap onto any Hero or structure in their path, each applying one stack of the Latched debuff. Latched foes take damage over 5 seconds and have their movement speed reduced by 15% for the duration. There is no limit to the number of Latched stacks.

To balance out to its immense damage potential, March of the Murlocs is very easy for your opponents to avoid. Due to its very long cooldown, it is typically only used in major team fights that occur around structures or objectives, as to force opponents to either potentially face a large amount of damage, or let go of the contested element. It can also be used to completely block off a potential escape route.

Following up strong area of effect crowd control abilities such as Apocalypse Icon Apocalypse, Mosh Pit Icon Mosh Pit, Grav-O-Bomb 3000 Icon Grav-O-Bomb 3000, Leap Icon Leap, Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm, and Void Prison Icon Void Prison is generally recommended to improve March of the Murlocs' effectiveness.

5. Octo-Grab

Summon an octopus to stun target enemy Hero for 3 seconds while you hit them for 1 damage a second.

Octo-Grab Icon Octo-Grab causes Murky to quickly dash to a target Hero and then perform a channel for up to 3 seconds, stunning his target for an equal amount of time. Although it is a channeled ability, Octo-Grab cannot be interrupted, as Murky is rendered Unstoppable for the ability's duration.

Octo-Grab is the longest targeted stun in the game. It is almost always used in conjunction with Pufferfish Icon Pufferfish to guarantee a large amount of damage. The only reliable way of preventing Octo-Grab from being used as a way of locking down kill targets is to use Cleanse Icon Cleanse, as well as a few other select Heroic Abilities (Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield and Sanctification Icon Sanctification). It is therefore essential that you learn to keep track of these cooldowns, lest Octo-Grab could end up being partly or completely countered. Another alternative is to aim — with the help of your teammates — for the Heroes that do have access to Cleanse Icon Cleanse. These Heroes are: Cho'gall (Level 20) Li Li, Lt. Morales, Brightwing, Lunara (Level 20), Malfurion, Rehgar, and Uther.

6. Spawn Egg

Place an Egg at target location, revealing the nearby area. Upon dying, you respawn at the Egg after 5 seconds. If your egg is killed, you are revealed to enemies for 15 seconds. You only grant 25% of a Hero's experience upon dying.

Spawn Egg Icon Spawn Egg causes Murky to summon a 100 (+30 per Level) Health Egg at a target location after channeling for 2 seconds. The Egg remains at this location until it is killed or cast elsewhere. It causes Murky to respawn at its location after 5 seconds after being killed. If the Egg is not active when Murky is killed, he will instead respawn at the Altar, experiencing a regular death timer. When the Egg is killed, Murky is revealed to his opponents for 15 seconds, during which Spawn Egg goes on cooldown.

Spawn Egg is what makes Murky unique, and the main factor that separates good Murky players from outstanding ones. Its last clause — which regards the fact that Murky only yields 25% of a normal Hero's experience upon death — makes it so that, essentially, efforts spent to control or otherwise remove him are poorly invested. As a Murky player, your main goal is to exploit this fact to take as much pressure as possible away from your allies. Willingly taking skillshots, aggressively body blocking, or bullying Support Heroes as to force a response are all legitimate manners of imposing your presence.

Another important aspect of Spawn Egg to consider is the fact that Murky's revival timer is of 5 seconds at all stages of the game. Early on, this advantage is mediocre; later in the game, it is outstanding. Furthermore, the time it takes you to travel back to points of contention — objectives, bases, or general team fights — is entirely dependent on how aggressively you decide to position your Egg. Spawn Egg rewards selective aggressivity.
