About the Author

Oxygen is a veteran of the MOBA genre, which he has been playing for nearly 15 years. He has coached some of Heroes of the Storm's most prominent North American players and teams alike, including Team Liquid. As a Master player, he enjoys playing all Heroes and roles.

1. General Murky Gameplay

Murky has a peculiar playstyle. His presence, beside his Octo-Grab Icon Octo-Grab ability, is very limited. To succeed, Murky players must work through attrition. His death is nearly irrelevant in terms of experience gains for your opponents, and under the right circumstances, you can very quickly rejoin an ongoing fight despite having been killed. This means that Murky strives when efforts are invested towards dealing with him, and a strong player will know just how to attract the perfect amount of aggression from opponents.

In general, Murky takes up the spot of a melee Assassin. Despite his frailty and limited damage, his ultimate goal is to kill opponents and raze their structures. His simple-to-use offensive abilities are used on-cooldown (when not trying to combo them in some manner), and body blocking plays a major role in furthering his effectiveness. Given his nature, positioning aggressively is beneficial; still, see to let your frontline initiate and take the brunt of the damage. Your first "life" is typically the most valuable one, as this is usually where you try to combo for kills.

2. When Not Team Fighting

Although Murky's weak Basic Attack makes him a poor sieger, his Pufferfish Icon Pufferfish makes him an outstanding pusher. Use the ability to pressure lanes and quickly gather experience; due to the ability's clearing efficiency, Murky is a decent candidate to leave behind during major objectives due to the fact that he can effectively soak two lanes.

Since Murky is worth nearly no experience and Safety Bubble Icon Safety Bubble can get be used to get him out of sticky situations, he makes the perfect scout for potentially dangerous Bushes, Mercenary Camps, and objectives. One thing that should definitely be avoided, however, is carrying Objective currencies, such as Doubloons (Blackheart's Bay) and Gems (Tomb of the Spider Queen); keen players will be quick to capitalise on Murky's tiny Health pool.

3. When Team Fighting

Your primary goal in any major fight is to single-out a target by using your Octo-Grab Icon Octo-Grab + Pufferfish Icon Pufferfish combo. It deals a large amount of damage and allows your allies to follow up on your target with their own abilities. Make sure to clearly communicate your intended target, and for crowd-control breaking abilities such as Cleanse Icon Cleanse. While Octo-Grab is on cooldown, your goal is to attract as much attention as possible on yourself, as a way of preventing high damage or crowd control abilities from instead affecting your allies. Safety Bubble Icon Safety Bubble is key to staying alive and "baiting" skillshots onto you without actually being hurt. Furthermore, your main source of sustained damage is a mix of Slime Icon Slime, Basic Attacks, and body blocking for your allies.

A key skill to develop as a Murky player is to be able to predict impending team fights. This allows you to replace your Egg so that you may head back to an ongoing battle with minimal downtime. Impending Map Objectives are typically a strong indicator of imminent conflicts.

4. Summary of Tips and Tricks

  • After Hero Level 7, one cast of Slime Icon Slime and a Pufferfish Icon Pufferfish can clear out a Minion wave; after Hero Level 13, Pufferfish can do it on its own.
  • Keep track of the cooldown of Cleanse Icon Cleanse and other Octo-Grab Icon Octo-Grab-denial abilities.
  • Several hiding spots are available on all maps for your Egg; use them, and especially when team fights are about to occur.
  • When you revive, avoid coming directly from your Egg's location, as keen opponents may guess its position.
  • Even if you yield a reduced amount of experience, do not die unless you have a legitimate goal in mind.
  • Call out your Octo-Grab Icon Octo-Grab cooldown for your allies — you need it to be relevant during team fights.
