About the Author

Srey is Rank 1 in Hero League and a top 10 player on Hotslogs. He played for Happy Faerie Dragons, formerly the top amateur team on the North American server. With the team having now disbanded, he is bringing together a new team, which he hopes will compete at an even higher level. You can watch his stream to see how he plays The Butcher (and other heroes).

1. Heroes The Butcher Works Well With

In this section, we will look at Heroes that work particularly well with The Butcher.

1.1. Abathur

Abathur Portrait Abathur can deal significant damage with Symbiote Icon Symbiote, but there are a couple of problems when using Symbiote on most Heroes. First, the host target is usually too far from the enemies for Abathur to hit them. Secondly, the hosted target cannot adequately stick to enemy Heroes. The Butcher solves these problems. Symbiote turns him into a powerhouse of damage, and so long as he has support from his team, enemies will have great difficulty bringing you down, allowing Abathur to use Symbiote on you for the entire duration of most fights. Abathur also has a number of other strengths, including gaining vision through Toxic Nest Icon Toxic Nest, soaking multiple lanes simultaneously for experience with Symbiote, cloning allies with Ultimate Evolution Icon Ultimate Evolution, and split-pushing with Evolve Monstrosity Icon Evolve Monstrosity, Locust Strain Icon Locust Strain, and Symbiote.

1.2. Tyrande

Tyrande Portrait Tyrande's Hunter's Mark Icon Hunter's Mark and Lunar Flare Icon Lunar Flare perfectly complement The Butcher by amplifying your burst damage and immobilising enemy Heroes. This is especially true when using Ruthless Onslaught Icon Ruthless Onslaught and Furnace Blast Icon Furnace Blast to lock up and burst down targets. Sentinel Icon Sentinel provides vision of enemies, spotting enemies that can potentially be targeted.

1.3. Uther

Uther Portrait Uther is able to lock down targets with Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice and Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm, allowing you to land Furnace Blast Icon Furnace Blast more easily. Uther can also use Holy Light Icon Holy Light, Holy Radiance Icon Holy Radiance, Cleanse Icon Cleanse, and Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield to keep you alive if you are prioritised by enemy Assassins. Uther is the perfect Support Hero to keep you alive and free to deal damage in team fights, especially versus enemies with lots of crowd control.

2. Heroes The Butcher Is Countered By

2.1. Muradin

Muradin Portrait Muradin is an extremely tanky Warrior with multiple tools to counter you. Storm Bolt Icon Storm Bolt and Avatar Icon Avatar Stun you and Reverberation Icon Reverberation significantly reduces your attack speed. He also has Dwarf Toss Icon Dwarf Toss to catch you out of position or to escape if he gets low or you mark him with Butcher's Brand Icon Butcher's Brand.

2.1.1. How To Play Against Muradin

Muradin is one of those Heroes that you cannnot really play around and must instead just deal with. Storm Bolt can be dodged but The Butcher's large character model makes this difficult. Reverberation, however, cannot be dodged, although you can attempt to bait Thunder Clap Icon Thunder Clap early and then engage when it is down. Uther's Cleanse Icon Cleanse and Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield can be very helpful to remove the crowd control.

2.2. Uther

Uther Portrait Uther is well known for his ability to lock down targets with Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice and Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm, but those abilities are not what make him an effective counter to The Butcher. Cleanse Icon Cleanse and Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield — coupled with his multiple healing spells — allow Uther to completely negate all of the damage from Furnace Blast Icon Furnace Blast.

2.2.1. How To Play Against Uther

There are a few strategies to deal with Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield. You can try to bait Uther into using it prematurely by feigning your combo, or you can kill an enemy Hero before Uther has time to react. You can combo enemy Heroes that are too far from Uther and out of range of Divine Storm. You can even combo multiple enemy Heroes at the same time so that he can only shield one.

2.3. Zeratul

Zeratul Portrait Zeratul deals an unprecedented amount of damage and can Void Prison Icon Void Prison you to interrupt your engage with Ruthless Onslaught Icon Ruthless Onslaught and Furnace Blast Icon Furnace Blast. He can also use Blink Icon Blink in and out of fights, making it difficult to kill him.

2.3.1. How To Play Against Zeratul

Aside from dealing very high damage, the biggest problem about Zeratul is his Void Prison Icon Void Prison, which can be used on you when charging to give the enemy time to disengage, or on your allies, preventing them from assisting you when you engage the enemy team. Both situations can be devastating, so it is important to always be aware of what Void Prison can do. Note that without Blink Icon Blink, Zeratul is completely defenseless and he should be targeted immediately. You should usually take Block Icon Block when facing Zeratul, since most of his burst damage comes from empowering his Basic Attacks.
