About the Author

Srey is Rank 1 in Hero League and a top 10 player on Hotslogs. He played for Happy Faerie Dragons, formerly the top amateur team on the North American server. With the team having now disbanded, he is bringing together a new team, which he hopes will compete at an even higher level. You can watch his stream to see how he plays Zeratul (and other heroes).

1. Heroes Zeratul Works Well With

In this section, we will look at Heroes that work particularly well with Zeratul.

1.1. Abathur

Abathur Portrait Abathur is able to assist you at any time and place with Symbiote Icon Symbiote. Symbiote synergises especially well with Permanent Cloak Icon Permanent Cloak, as it greatly assists you when ganking, without revealing your position. Toxic Nest Icon Toxic Nest can also help you to spot enemies, by revealing their position.

1.2. Diablo

Diablo Portrait Diablo is able to use Shadow Charge Icon Shadow Charge, in combination with Overpower Icon Overpower to immediately take an enemy out of position, allowing you and your allies to output all of your damage onto the target. Additionally, Apocalypse Icon Apocalypse can be comboed with Void Prison Icon Void Prison, for a guaranteed AoE stun. First capture multiple enemy Heroes with Void Prison, then have Diablo cast Apocalypse and release Void Prison just before the mark explodes.

1.3. Uther

Uther Portrait Uther is able to lock down targets with Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice and Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm, allowing you burst down targets while they are immobile. Uther can also use Holy Light Icon Holy Light, Holy Radiance Icon Holy Radiance, Cleanse Icon Cleanse, and Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield to keep you alive if you are prioritised by enemy Assassins. Additionally, Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm synergises perfectly with Void Prison Icon Void Prison. Uther should walk into the Void Prison and hold down the "R" button, so that Divine Storm will activate as soon as Void Prison ends, giving enemies no time to escape.

2. Heroes Zeratul Is Countered By

In this section, we will look at Heroes that counter Zeratul particularly well.

2.1. Brightwing

Brightwing Portrait The main problem with Brightwing is Polymorph Icon Polymorph. Polymorph is essentially a medium range stun, except that you are able to move. If you are trying to escape, Polymorph will prevent you from using Blink Icon Blink, but more importantly, it will prevent you from using Wormhole Icon Wormhole when you are using Blink to harass. Additionally, Brightwing is extremely mobile with Blink Heal Icon Blink Heal, making her very difficult to focus.

2.1.1. How To Play Against Brightwing

You can still Blink into a fight, use your abilities, and Wormhole out against Brightwing, but only against less skilled Brightwing players. Better Brightwing players will instantly Polymorph you, resulting in chained crowd control from other Heroes, and your death. Instead, you want to only Blink into a fight if Brightwing has either already used Polymorph, or is not within range to target you. If Brightwing gets Blink Heal, you are simply better off targeting another Hero, unless Brightwing is severely out of position or stunned.

2.2. Chen

Chen Portrait Fortifying Brew Icon Fortifying Brew makes Chen unkillable in a 1v1 situation, as you will be unable to even break his shield. Wandering Keg Icon Wandering Keg can be used to zone you away from your allies or to push you into your opponents.

2.2.1. How To Play Against Chen

As Zeratul, you are unable to kill Chen without the assistance of your team, since you have no crowd control to interrupt Fortifying Brew. Do not attack Chen when his shields are up. If you expect Chen to use Wandering Keg, be sure that you have Blink Icon Blink available to avoid be pushed into the enemy team. Wandering Keg can also be used to steal Mercenary Camps from your team, by knocking all of your allies off of the capture point. If you suspect Chen of trying to steal your Mercenary Camp, you can Void Prison Icon Void Prison him before he gets to the capture point, allowing your team to capture it.

2.3. Tassadar

Tassadar Portrait Plasma Shield Icon Plasma Shield can instantly mitigate a large portion of your damage, while Oracle Icon Oracle and Psionic Storm Icon Psionic Storm can be used to reliably dispel Permanent Cloak Icon Permanent Cloak. Dimensional Shift Icon Dimensional Shift, coupled with Prescience Icon Prescience and Dimensional Warp Icon Dimensional Warp, makes Tassadar himself difficult to kill, as does Archon Icon Archon; the latter ability can be used to duel you with ease.

2.3.1. How To Play Against Tassadar

If possible, avoid attacking while Plasma Shield is active, indicated by a blue shield and health bar. Tassadar himself is never a good target, due to Dimensional Shift, and should not be attacked, unless Dimensional Shift is on cooldown or Tassadar is stunned, silenced, or polymorphed. Oracle is a powerful counter to your cloak and you should avoid going near Tassadar until Oracle fades. However, its cooldown is relatively long, allowing counterplay.

2.4. Uther

Uther Portrait Uther is well known for his ability to lock down targets with Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice and Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm, but it is Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield and and his healing that makes him effective versus Zeratul. Divine Shield and healing allow Uther to completely negate all of your burst damage, while Clairavoyance will remove you from Permanent Cloak Icon Permanent Cloak.

2.4.1. How To Play Against Uther

There are a few strategies to deal with Divine Shield. You can try to bait Uther into using it prematurely, by feigning your combo, or you can kill an enemy Hero before Uther has time to react. You can also target enemy Heroes that are too far from Uther, and out of range of Divine Storm. However, the best way to deal with Uther as Zeratul, is to use Void Prison Icon Void Prison on him and kill vulnerable enemy Heroes, while he is unable to take any action.
