WoW Feature - 'Mastering the Menagerie'

Over a short series of blog posts, Blizzard is providing some insight and expertise on content in World of Warcraft that players may have glossed over - whether due to difficulty, distraction, or downright never having thought about it. This week, Kaivax walks us through defeating the pests necessary to unlock the Menagerie in your Garrison.

The complete post follows:

In this series of blog posts, we’ll look at some of the content in World of Warcraft where you might need a helpful nudge in the right direction—maybe you’re stuck, maybe you got sidetracked, or maybe you don’t even know how to begin! Join us as we travel all over Azeroth and Draenor  to uncover and thoroughly tackle the many different little adventures available to any player.

To start, let’s look at that Pet Menagerie taunting you in your Garrison. Beginning here and now, you can point at it and say “I’m coming for you, Menagerie! Your days of just sitting there waiting to be used are numbered!” Say that in your best Cro Threadstrong voice, by the way—soon, the Menagerie will mock you no more.

What follows is intended for players who haven’t already overcome the content, though keep in mind it will contain minor spoilers. If this particular information isn’t for you because you’re already a Managerie pro, then well done! In the comments below, let us know what you’d like to learn how to master in a future blog post.

WE’LL DO IT LIVE, MAYBE

Even if it were as easy as just saying a magic word to unlock and begin interacting with the Menagerie, that wouldn’t make it useful. In the context of pet battling, consider the Menagerie endgame content—and while there’s no specific definition of what qualifies a player for the pet-battle endgame, it’s safe to say that if you don’t currently have some level 25 rare-quality pets in hand, you’ve not yet reached the endgame.

That number varies based on a lot of things. For example, an endgame goal like defeating the seven master tamers in Pandaria (which rewards the Taming Pandaria achievement) requires at least 6 to 10 very specific pets. Some players consider the endgame reached when they’ve got a solid trio of pets they can use to do pet-battle PvP. If you want to complete the Celestial Tournament, your endgame is going to require dozens of max-level pets, but that’s a subject for another day.

Players who have 5 to 10 randomly selected pets at max level and rare quality can proceed to the next step, as it should be possible to overcome your initial obstacles with some careful planning and a bit of luck. If you don’t have several (or any) max-level pets, don’t worry! Bringing together teams of companions is a fun and rewarding experience.

If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll want to read about the basics:

If you’re looking for a plan to level up your pets:

If you’d like some help building your collection:

Use the guides above, and you’ll return to your Garrison with a small army—but most of all, have fun out there.

PETS VERSUS PESTS

To unlock the Menagerie, you’ll need to take out three difficult enemies that you’ll find in your Garrison: Carrotus Maximum, Gorefu, and Gnawface. You’ll also need to be at level 100, and your Garrison has to have been upgraded to level 3. Let’s look at each of the three gatekeepers in detail.

What a glamour shot!

This totally sane root vegetable comes at you with 1603 health, 276 attack, and a speed of 252. He’s an elemental pet, so your aquatic abilities hit him for extra damage, and you shouldn’t try to use mechanical abilities. Carrotus uses three abilities:

  • Ironbark (deals damage to you and reduces damage Carrotus takes from you for one round), which is strong against mechanical pets and weak against critters.
  • Aged Yolk (removes all buffs and debuffs from Carrotus), which has a two-turn cooldown.
  • Leech Seed (deals damage to you, heals Carrotus, and places a damage-over-time on you for one round), which is strong against mechanical pets and weak against critters, and has a four-turn cooldown.

So as you can see, it’s suicide to try to defeat him with mechanical pets. Critters are the way to go, and in particular, critters that use aquatic abilities are best. Leech Seed is the hit you want to avoid, so choose battle pets that have an avoidance skill, such as crickets with their Cocoon Strike, and then time your avoidance to sidestep it.

His contemporaries call him Ol’ Yellow Eyes.

This cute little guy has all of 1583 health, 276 attack, and 256 speed. He’s a pet of the aquatic variety, which means that your pets with flying abilities will hit him extra hard, and your pets with undead abilities are at a disadvantage. He brings the following to the table:

  • Deep Bite (damages you more and more each time he uses it), which is strong against elemental pets and weak versus magic pets.
  • Mudslide (deals some damage and changes the weather, preventing you from being able to switch your pet out), which is strong versus undead and weak against humanoid pets.
  • Feed (deals damage to you and heals Gorefu for the same amount), which hits critters extra hard, but is weak against flyers, and has a four-turn cooldown.

Put it all together and you want to avoid using undead pets and instead concentrate on your flying pets. In particular, flying pets that can avoid being hit by Feed would be best. Moths and flies are excellent picks for this fight.

18GLON1QFIUS1429157165729.jpg
He looks like the sort of person to name turtles after artists.

Gnawface is a fast little rodent with 1400 health, 276 attack, and a respectable speed of 293. He’s a critter, which means that he takes extra damage from beast abilities, and is extra tough if you hit him with elemental abilities. His abilities arsenal includes:

  • Sneak Attack (damages you, and gets a bonus if you’re currently blinded), which is strong versus undead and weak against humanoid pets.
  • Comeback (a hit that does bonus damage if Gnawface has less health than you), which is also increased against undead and diminished versus humanoids.
  • Call Darkness (deals some damage and changes the weather, blinding all pets), which hits dragonkin extra hard, but is weak against beasts.

The plan here is to use humanoids or beasts, and use their beast abilities. Yes, Virginia, there are humanoid battle pets with beast abilities. An excellent example is the Curious Wolvar Pup you can obtain from the Children’s Week holiday (coming up April 27 – May 4), which can use both Bite and Maul to make quick work of Gnawface.

THE FUN BEGINS

Overcoming the three opponents above is a great step, but it’s only a first step into the wonders of the Menagerie. Now you have access to daily challenges and the rewards they offer. Learn how to defeat each of the different daily enemies the Menagerie provides, and you’ll quickly accumulate Battle-Stones that you can use to upgrade your pets to rare quality.

T2FICINH0ZYH1429157164658.jpg
It's hardly fair when you've got three against only one.

Here’s a basic strategy for beating the Menagerie dailies (and any tamer or legendary pet you encounter):

  1. Note the opposing pets’ families and the types of the skills they’re using.
  2. Identify pets in your collection that counter those types and skills.
  3. Look for pairs or even trios of pets who have strong compatibilities.
  4. If necessary, go capture new pets that can do the job.
  5. Level up your pets to 25 and make them rare quality.
  6. Order your team in such a way that your damage-over-time skills or team buffs will be played earlier in the contest and your big hits will be available later, when the enemy is weak.
  7. Play through your opponent’s routine more than once to learn when they cast their most impactful spells.
  8. Fine tune your team and the order you use your skills, returning all the way to step #3 if necessary.

Are you stuck staring at that empty plot where your Menagerie should be? Tell us about it in this forum thread in our Pet Battles discussion forum. Master pet battlers are standing by!

Lol, so true. Is there any way to beat him other than 3 aquatic pets with pump?

Several ways. Singing Sunflower can solo him, with Sunlight, Solar Beam and Photosynthesis. Just keep Sunny weather, pre-cast Photosynthesis and spam Solar beam. It hits like a truck and as long as you have 2 other pets to share his cleave, he will not beat your regeneration.

Another tacts includes 2-3 pets with Exchange Life (Faerie Dragon, Ethereal Soul Trader,...): always wait til your health is lower than his - not that difficult - and then Exchange. Make sure you have something to finish him off.

In the past, I was using 2 Direhorn Runts with Trample (or anything with Trample) + anything that could make Sunny weather. 10% of his health (buffed with Sunny weather) was a considerable chunk, but in 6.1 his total health was nerfed, so this tacts does not beat his reduction any more sad.png

P.S. My friend said that you can do it with good old Howlbomb comp (a.k.a. Splash-Splash-Boom). Back when he had 6k health, I had no luck with that, but now it should be well possible.

Now's the perfect time to unlock your missing Plunderstorm rewards with doubled Renown gains until April 30th!
      (Source)
Hoist the sails and batten the hatches; a Plundersurge begins this week with weekly maintenance!
The Plunderstorm event is ending on April 30, but until then, pirating players can double the amount of Renown earned from all sources of Plunder by taking the Plundersurge.
      Set Sail for the Plunderstorm
Plunge into a challenging battle that earns excellent rewards for World of Warcraft® Modern and Classic progression realms. All you have to do is survive…and plunder. Can't seem to stay in the realm of the living? No problem. Plunderers still gain progression that helps unlock new rewards.
Each match is 10-15 minutes long and has 60 players per match, with the winner being the last one standing. Level up and acquire new abilities and spells by killing creatures and enemies, looting chests, and avoiding the encroaching storm.
      A Pirate's Life for You
The Arathi Highlands is the backdrop for this pirating adventure, and you'll have plenty of challenges to keep you busy.
      Prepare to Plunder
Plunderstorm is perfect for pick-up and play! No expansion purchase is required, but a World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time is needed to participate in a high-stakes, play-by-the-seat-your-pants match. This means that Classic players can also participate in a plethora of plundering fun by simply installing the modern (Live) World of Warcraft client:
Launch the Battle.net desktop app. Click the World of Warcraft icon at the top. If the icon is missing, click on All Games and select the game from the list. On top of the Install button is a drop-down menu. Confirm that you wish to install World of Warcraft. Click Install. Once you’re in modern WoW:
Select Plunderstorm2 from the World of Warcraft game menu to get into the action. Create a new, ready-to-play character—player characters are unique to this event. You don't need previous knowledge of races and classes to chart your course for mayhem. Choose between Solo or—to play with your Battle.net friends—make a group from the Plunderstorm character screen and select Duo. If queued for a Duo without a partner, you'll be automatically matched with one. You can also access chat, customize characters, and see the queue from the Character Select Screen. Action Bar and Abilities, Worthy Mates
Discover lootable spells, abilities, and upgrades as you plunder treasure chests and defeat enemies. Upon picking up, spells and abilities are automatically added to your Action Bar, with two slots dedicated to offensive skills and two for utilities such as leaps, speed boosts, and crowd-control.
Some abilities are more action-based and require good positioning and player targeting. Have fun discovering and experimenting with different combinations to find what works for you.
Upgrades to Your Spells and Abilities
Your spells and abilities can be upgraded by discovering higher-quality versions from treasure chests or finding the same ability elsewhere and stacking it to Rank 3 (epic). There are also plenty of plundering opportunities—various treasure chests with different rarities that harbor all types of abilities are stashed around the map. Always stay on the lookout for better loot and upgrades.
      Spectating Spectre
Upon death, keep watching the match from the perspective of your teammates (if they're still alive) or other players, including their loadout.
      Rewards A-Plenty for Plundering Pirates
Players can earn cosmetics, pets, titles, and mounts as they progress through the reward track. These include the majestic Polly Roger parrot mount, Bubbles the crab pet, swashbuckling cosmetics, 750 Trader's Tender from "Keg Leg's Crew" for use on the Trading Post, and more. 3 A victory is not required to claim the spoils of a well-fought fight.
To view Renown and apply the Plunderstorm weapon and transmog customizations, change titles, or summon pets, swabbies can click on Da'kash Grimledger standing directly in front of the spawn point in the Plunderstorm lobby.
Customization unlocks are simultaneously unlocked for Dragonflight characters and can be found in your Collection. Each Renown level unlock is noted in colored text under the reward name, whether the reward is for Dragonflight, Plunderstorm, or Classic.
Perch on the shoulders of this parrot instead of him perching on yours! Proper pirate fashion is a must for plundering! There isn't a better first mate on the high seas than Pirate Pepe! Plunderstorm Content Update Notes
Learn more details about Plunderstorm in our update notes.
We look forward to seeing you drop from the skies to engage in pirate-themed mayhem. We'll see you in Azeroth and wherever the adventure takes you!
1 Requires World of Warcraft® Subscription or Game Time.
2Plunderstorm is accessed from the World of Warcraft® game menu but exists outside of player progression in World of Warcraft® and Wrath of the Lich King Classic™.
3Plunderstorm offers rewards for both World of Warcraft® and Wrath of the Lich King Classic™.

Check out our first look at MoP Remix coming in Patch 10.2.7!
When Patch 10.2.7 goes live, you will be greeted by the following screen, informing you about the MoP Remix event and its objectives. There will be a button that lets you create your Timerunner (character).

Similar to Plunderstorm, there will be an icon on the character screen for MoP Remix with the number of days remaining.

Timerunners will be marked with a special icon next to their name on the character selection screen.

When you first enter the game, you'll start with a short intro quest on the Timeless Shore. Your character will be affected with the Pandaria: Remix buff.

The quest intro features a few unique quests before you start replaying MoP from the very beginning. It introduces you to Bronze, the event's currency used to buy items and upgrade gear.
Throughout your journey you will come across some very unique gear just like this cloak (Cloak of Infinite Potential) that permanently increases in power (Timerunner's Advantage).

Your char will have access to two important Timerunning abilities.
Extract Gem - Extract a gem from one of your socketed items. Unraveling Sands - Summon Unraveling Sands that transforms your unwanted items into Bronze. Gems offer a lot of customization in MoP Remix and you want to extract them with Extract Gem, because placing a new gem on top of a socketed one will make you lose it.
If you come across unneeded gear, you can scrap it for Bronze with Unraveling Sands.

Things seem to be stabilizing a little, at least at the very top, as our DK-Rogue trio remains solid this week. There's plenty of movement below that though, so let's dive in.
Note: We are using Normalized scores instead of raw DPS for the Warcraft Logs rankings. The u.gg rankings at the bottom are raw DPS. Normalized scores take into account the outlier boss fights where certain specs could stack massive DPS (due to the nature of the fight, whether it's AoE spam or something else), which would then affect their overall score for the whole raid.
      Mythic
      Overall Damage 95th Percentile
It seems we have a stable chart at the top, as the DK-Rogue sandwich is exactly where we left them last week! We do see a big mover right after that, however, as Elemental jumps three spots up into 4th, pushing Retribution down one. Fury remains stable in 6th, followed by Frost Mage, which gains a spot at the expense of Outlaw, which is down three. The three A's are still sticking together, with Arms, Assassination and Arcane all moving one up, and the Rogue moving ahead of the Mage at the end of the top 10.

95th percentile Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Overall Damage All Percentiles
It's Survival's week this time around, as the Hunter bursts up nine spots into 7th, with the top 6 remaining the same. Elemental rises here as well in 9th, gaining three spots, as Havoc drops two at the end of the top 10. Marksmanship joins fellow Hunter Beast Mastery in the bottom 3, taking Feral's place.
All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Boss Only Damage All Percentiles
Unholy moves to the top of the pack in the direct damage charts, just barely taking Subtlety down. Survival makes an appearance here as well, moving six spots up into 6th, as Assassination and Shadow push Balance out of the top 10.
All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Heroic
      Overall Damage All Percentiles

All percentiles Heroic data by Warcraft Logs.

      U.GG Raw Mythic DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks. This chart is for Mythic only.
Arms is on the way up, gaining three spots in 6th and pushing Havoc down one, as the Fyr'alaths start compounding here as well. Fire moves three up in 9th, as Frost DK drops those same three spots just outside the top 10.
      Mythic chart by u.gg.

Meanwhile, if you're looking for more information you can check out our Dragonflight class guides, Amirdrassil boss guides, the raid DPS tier list, as well as more data from Warcraft Logs here.

As many expected, it seems everyone's favorite farm won't be making it to Remix: Mists of Pandaria, as spotted by TheYamagato.
This makes perfect sense, since it's a limited time event and the farm is a long reputation grind based on daily activities, and just wouldn't really fit with the shorter runtime. The farm itself is still there, but the NPCs that start the quests are not, replaced by the new Timerunning ones.       And so we're going to have to skip the farm when 10.2.7 comes along, but hey, it's still there on regular old retail if you really feel the need!
