16256-overwatch-beta-patch-notes--march-

On the 1st of March, Blizzard released a big balance patch for the Overwatch Beta, completly changing the metagame over night.

A popular cheese strategy on the North American side of competitive Overwatch was fielding a lineup consisting of two Winston, two Lucio, and two Reaper. The strategy had its first real outing in the Gosugamers NA Weekly #4 where both team google.me and EnvyUs ran this exact composition in the finals.

While the strategy had been very quickly figured out and has been deemed sub-optimal by European teams, it caused a huge uproar in various Overwatch forums. It seems like Blizzard took the concerns of these vocal users to heart and hit Winston and Lucio with a severe nerf. Additionally, Genji - who dominated the European metagame in Beta Phase 2 so far - has also been hit by the nerf hammer.
On the flip side, Mei and Junkrat got some love from Blizzard with significant buffs to their abilities.

The full patch notes read as follows:

Blizzard Icon Blizzard

A new beta patch is now live. Read below to learn about the latest changes.

General

Gameplay

  • The speed at which a payload moves has been increased for when one player is escorting and when two players are escorting
    • Max speed (when 3+ players are escorting) remains unchanged

Loot Boxes

  • All sprays and voice lines are now considered “Common”
  • All player icons and victory poses are now considered “Rare” (excluding default icons and poses)
  • “Rare” and “Epic” quantities of credits will now appear more frequently in Loot Boxes
  • “Legendary” quantities of credits will now appear less frequently in Loot Boxes

Matchmaking

  • Several behind-the-scenes improvements have been made to the in-game matchmaker, especially for groups and players at higher skill levels
  • Players from Australia, South America, and Southeast Asia should no longer experience exceptionally long queue times

Social Wheel

  • Removed the cooldown when using voice lines
  • Added a short global cooldown when using any option in the communications wheel
  • Frequently spamming any option in the communications wheel within a short period of time will now lock you out for a few seconds (HI THERE!)

Hero Balance Changes:

We’re experimenting with some pretty significant balance changes this patch. Because this is beta, these changes are a little more aggressive than what you can expect to see once the game is live—but it’s the perfect environment for us try things out. Please continue to share your feedback with us and remember that everything in the Closed Beta is still subject to change!

Bastion

  • Aim restrictions have been removed when transforming
  • Configuration: Sentry
    • Damaging Bastion’s core when in Sentry Mode will now cause double damage, decreased from triple damage

Developer comments: With the changes we made to Bastion’s overall survivability in Sentry Mode in our last beta patch, we felt that its core no longer needed to be so vulnerable. We also wanted to continue supporting Bastion’s “run-and-gun” playstyle, so we removed all aiming restrictions when transforming.

Genji

  • Health decreased from 200 to 150

Developer comments: Genji is a fast character with a smaller character model, making him overly difficult to kill. To help address this, we’re lowering Genji’s health. This is just an experiment, and we want to see how he feels to play (and play against) after this change. Be sure to share your feedback!

Lúcio

  • Health decreased from 200 to 150

Developer comments: Similar to Genji, Lúcio is fast, small, and has a lot of mobility options. We’ve lowered his health slightly to compensate. Let us know how this feels!

Junkrat

  • RIP-Tire
    • Health increased to 150
    • If the tire is destroyed, it no longer detonates
    • Significantly decreased damage falloff within RIP-Tire’s detonation radius

Developer comments: Junkrat is able to dish out a ton of damage, but RIP-Tire in its current state feels a little weak. On the flip side, trying to destroy his RIP-Tire can sometimes feel a little hopeless once it gets too close to you. With these changes, we hope that players will feel more empowered to take out Junkrat’s RIP-Tire before it explodes; however, to compensate, the explosion itself is much stronger. Overall, using RIP-Tire should feel more effective, and countering RIP-Tire should feel more realistic.

Mei

  • Endothermic Blaster
    • Primary Fire
      • Now has a minimum slow effect that’s applied instantly
      • The total time to freeze a target remains unchanged
  • Blizzard
    • Effective radius can no longer be blocked by barriers or payloads

Developer comments: Mei is intended to be a good pick against the faster, more agile heroes in the game. However, the way her primary fire previously worked, there’d frequently be situations where she’d hit an enemy target briefly, but not long enough to slow them down or follow-up with another attack before they were out of range or line-of-sight. Boosting her primary fire’s initial slow effect should help her keep up with her enemy targets more successfully. Additionally, Mei’s Ultimate now ignores barriers like Winston’s Barrier Projector and Reinhardt’s Barrier Field, which gives it a little more power and allows for more options when trying to counter heavy use of shielding abilities in general.

Mercy

  • Guardian Angel
    • Can once again target the souls of dead allies

Developer comments: Players really enjoyed being able to use Guardian Angel on dead allies, and felt it allowed for more clutch plays and interesting movement options during combat. As a result, we’re reverting the change from a previous patch that removed Mercy’s ability to target and travel to dead allies using Guardian Angel.

Winston

  • Barrier Projection
    • Shield health decreased from 1000 to 600
    • Cooldown now activates after the barrier expires

Developer comments: Even though it’s always been possible to destroy Winston’s Barrier Projection, it often felt impossible to do so in a normal situation unless you used your Ultimate. This resulted in many players just waiting for the barrier to expire instead of attacking it. With this change, it’s now more realistic for players to counter Winston’s barrier through normal damage.

Zarya

  • Projected Barrier
    • Duration decreased from 4 seconds to 2 seconds

Developer comments: Previously, Zarya’s Projected Barrier lasted much longer than her Particle Barrier, which made it very difficult for enemies to deal with. If a player wanted to avoid dealing damage to the barrier, they had to wait a full 4 seconds—which felt like an unreasonable amount of time in the thick of combat. This change makes Zarya’s Particle Barrier and Projected Barrier the same duration.

Zenyata

  • Players will now receive a notification whenever Orb of Harmony or Orb of Destruction are returned from a dead target

Developer comments: This was a player suggestion that made a lot of sense to us. The notification helps you be more aware of the status of active Orbs of Harmony and Discord—which, in turn, allows you to more strategically re-deploy them.

Bug Fixes:

General

  • Fixed a crash that could occur when getting a Play of the Game on a Control point
  • Fixed several crashes that could occur when logging into and out of the game client

Heroes

  • Fixed an issue with the way Torbjörn’s turret oriented whenever its target moved out of line-of-sight

Loot Boxes

  • Fixed an issue with the lighting on several Loot Box rewards that caused skins and poses to appear darker than intended

(source)

While these changes are drastic, it remains to be seen whether some of the current balance changes will be reversed or altered in the not so near future, as the massive nerfs do seem a like a bit of an overreaction at this point. What can be said for sure so far is that the entire meta game has been changed drastically. Particulary Widowmaker and Tracer received massive indirect buffs and it is very likely that both heroes will see a lot more play in the upcoming tournaments.

New abilities for Hanzo as Scatter Arrow goes away, Lucio wall riding gets improved and more!
Update: There are some additional notes that were added later, featuring Brigitte's Shield Bash and more Lucio wall ride changes, as well as some unintended tweaks to the Horizon map that won't be coming to live any time soon.
      April 20 (source)
There are a couple changes that are on the current PTR that we missed on the main patch notes. I’ll be including them here as well as any additional changes if we make any for this PTR cycle.
      Brigitte:
      • Shield Bash
Cone angle reduced from 90 to 60 Dev Notes: When fighting against Brigitte, it often felt like Shield Bash was able to hit you when you felt like you should have dodged it. On the flip side, when playing as Brigitte sometimes you would hit the wrong enemy in the middle of a fight. With the cone being reduced the ability is more accurate to its visual representation.
      Lucio
      Wall Ride
Wall leap boost decreased from 2.5 m/s to 2.0m/s Dev Notes: This change is just part of the overall changes to wall riding. Now that you can ride on many more surfaces and boost/land on the same surface, we’re reducing the leap boost itself slightly.
      Bug Fixes:
      • Fixed a bug that would cause Brigitte to not be able to use abilities or her weapon while her Repair Pack was in flight.

      David Adams (source)
Well that wasn’t supposed to happen but there you go. We have some changes that we are still working on and testing for the map so what you are seeing here may not be final. Also as an FYI it won’t be released with the next patch and no eta for when it will be released as it is still a rework in progress. And here are some examples of Hanzo's new abilities and Lucio's Wall Ride changes:

      __________________________________________________
Today's PTR patch is a big one, as Hanzo finally gets the possibly most hated ability in the game removed! He's getting some Storm Arrows to replace Scatter Arrow and a new Lunge movement ability in addition to a lot more changes. Lucio also got some attention, with wall riding getting some quality of life improvements, and there's also tweaks to Genji, Junkrat and Tracer. Finally, the patch brings the new Rialto map to Escort mode!
      April 20 (source)
PATCH HIGHLIGHTS New Escort Map: Rialto
Rialto was home to Talon agent Antonio Bartalotti’s sprawling estate and the backdrop to the infamous “Venice Incident,” a turning point for Overwatch and Talon. The Italian government has taken great steps to preserve Venice, and the results are striking. Tourists visiting this picturesque town can sample the regional cuisine, enjoy a relaxing gondola ride, visit Galleria D’arte Omnica, or simply take in the sights with a stroll along the canal.
      HERO UPDATES
      Genji
      Deflect
Hitbox size has been reduced Developer Comments: The hitbox on Genji’s Deflect was big enough that it would sometimes reflect projectiles that were pretty far away from him. We’ve tightened up the hitbox, which should solve this problem while still fully protecting him from projectiles that would hit him from the front.
      Hanzo
      Storm Bow
Projectile speed increased from 85 to 100 Sonic Arrow
Cooldown decreased from 20 seconds to 12 seconds
Duration decreased from 10 seconds to 6 seconds
Radius decreased from 10 meters to 7 meters
      New Abilities
      Lunge
Press jump while in the air to leap horizontally Storm Arrows
Replaces his existing Scatter Arrow ability
Hanzo can now rapidly fire up to 6 arrows that deal reduced damage but are always fired at full power
Developer Comments: The goal of these Hanzo changes is to allow him to have new options and maintain his high damage output, while removing the frustration of fighting against the old Scatter Arrow. Hanzo is now much more mobile with his new Lunge ability, and with the combination of the bow projectile speed increase and the new Storm Arrows ability he can now deal his high damage more consistently than ever before.
      Junkrat
      Frag Launcher
Projectile size decreased from 0.3 to 0.2 RIP-Tire
Tire movement speed decreased from 13 to 12 Developer Comments: These changes are aimed at lowering some of the most frustrating parts about playing against Junkrat. Decreasing the Frag Launcher’s projectile size means he will have to aim a bit more carefully to land powerful direct hits and slowing the RIP-Tire’s movement speed gives his opponents slightly more time to destroy it before it detonates.
      Lúcio
      Wall Ride
Wall riding is less likely to be interrupted along a single surface
Can now go around corners (both outside corners, and inside corners) without having to leave the wall
Can now land back on the same wall after leaping away, provided his leap takes him far enough away from the original jumping off point.
      Soundwave
No longer consumes ammo Developer Comments: Wall Ride has been significantly overhauled to allow it to function more smoothly across more areas of every map. Lúcio players should instantly notice a huge improvement in where and how Wall Ride can be used. In addition, Sonic Amplifier’s Soundwave ability was unnecessarily controlled by both a cooldown and an ammo cost, so we’re removing the ammo cost.
      Tracer
      Pulse Bomb
Max damage decreased from 400 to 300 Developer Comments: Pulse Bomb was too good at killing tanks, who can be easy to stick due to their size. This damage reduction makes it less powerful as a tank-destroyer, while keeping it lethal against most other heroes.
      GAME BROWSER AND CUSTOM GAMES
      General
Mercy’s Regeneration (passive ability) can now be turned off in Custom Game settings
Settings for Hanzo’s Lunge and Storm Arrow abilities can now be found in the Custom Game settings
      BUG FIXES
      General
Fixed a bug that caused the option “Invite to a Custom Game” to appear while in the Tutorial and Practice Range A.I.
Fixed a bug that prevented training bots from returning to their original position and behavior after being hit with an ability (e.g. Lúcio’s Soundwave)
Fixed a bug that caused bots to use the wrong route when tracking down the player if their target jumped off a ledge
Fixed a bug that caused bots to get stuck on the siege tank in the StarCraft area of Blizzard World
      Game Browser and Custom Game
Fixed a bug that caused custom game invites to persist on the invitee’s screen Heroes
Fixed a bug that prevented Bastion’s Zwing Zwing Zwing voice line from playing if the Null Sector skin was equipped
Fixed a bug that prevented Genji’s melee attack from making sound effects
Fixed a bug that prevented Genji’s golden weapon variant from displaying its golden sheen when some skins were equipped
Fixed a bug that allowed Junkrat’s RIP-TIRE to be immune to the freeze effects of Mei’s Endothermic Blaster
Fixed a bug that allowed Lúcio to move around while caught in Junkrat’s Steel Trap
Fixed a bug that allowed Lúcio to travel straight up using Wall Ride
Fixed a bug that prevented crowd control abilities from affecting Resurrect (e.g. McCree’s Flashbang)
Fixed a bug that prevented Moira’s flask from displaying in her Erlenmeyer victory pose when an Overwatch League skin was equipped
Fixed a bug that caused Reaper’s Hellfire Shotguns to float when previewing his Dance emote in Hero Gallery
Fixed a bug that caused the camera to not focus correctly when viewing Roadhog’s Mug Shot victory pose
Fixed a bug that caused Roadhog’s Chain Hook to float during his Footsteps highlight intro
Fixed a bug that prevented the laser sight from Sombra’s Machine Pistol golden variant from tapering at its end if her Talon skin equipped
Fixed a bug that caused Widowaker’s HUD to disappear if she used Widow’s Kiss while looking through the scope
Fixed a bug that caused the logos on Symmetra’s Overwatch League skins to appear faded when viewed in the Hero Gallery
Fixed a bug that caused the logos on Torbjörn’s Overwatch League skins to appear faded when viewed in the Hero Gallery
      Maps
Fixed a bug that caused bots to get stuck walking into the side of the Rikimaru Ramen Shop on Hanamura
Fixed a bug that allowed players to place turrets in unintended locations on Horizon Lunar Colony
Fixed a bug that allowed players to reach unintended locations in Horizon Lunar Colony
Fixed a bug that caused the pig head on the bike to float after the bike had been destroyed in Junkertown
Fixed a bug that allowed players to place turrets and Symmetra’s Teleporter in unintended locations in Junkertown

6v6 Elimination has come to Competitive today! Scott Mercer announced the deathmatch mode is live a little earlier than expected, with the lockout rule in place (aka when you win with a hero you can't pick them again) and that the first season will be quite short. It's nice to see things like this added without any special event or occasion, with the team simply putting a feature live once it's ready, and hopefully we'll get more in the future!
      Scott Mercer (source)
We’re started a short Competitive 6v6 Elimination season at 0:00 UTC today, which is 5:00 PM PDT.
This season will end on May 8, 0:00 UTC, which is May 7 5:00 PDT.
The “Lockout” rule in place, so once a team wins with a hero it becomes unavailable for that team for the duration of the match. All the previous Elimination maps are available to play this season, but we’ve also added Ayutthaya to the mix as an Elimination map.
To play, simply choose the Competitive Elimination card in the Arcade!

So, how many of you will be jumping into the more serious Elimination format this week?
