overwatch Overwatch: Beta Patch Notes - March 8, 2016

1 post in this topic

16387-overwatch-beta-patch-notes-march-8

Yesterday night, Blizzard released two patches for the Beta of Overwatch. The patch includes various balance, UI and quality of life changes, as well as a plethora of new skins.

Just as in the patch last week, the balance change portion is aimed directly at a new cheese strategy that has been incorporated into the competitive meta in the last week. Due to Orb of Harmony, as well as Orb of Discord, from Zenyatta stacking, various teams managed to use a composition consisting of two Zenyattas, a Genji, a Reaper, a Symmetra (even on offense) and a Mei to great success. So far the only way to counter this composition was to run a similar double Zenyatta composition yourself.

To balance this out, Blizzard removed the Orb stacking for Zenyatta. Additionally, they also reverted the Lúcio change from last week, returning the DJ on roller skates back to his original 200 HP. To keep Lúcio in check, however, his damage output is now greatly reduced.

The patching process didn't go all that smoothly however, with many Nvidia users reporting a crash returning them to their desktop. This was fixed in a hotfix that was distributed later in the night.

The official patch notes read as follows:

Patch Highlights:

New Control Map: Ilios
Situated atop a small island rising from the Aegean Sea, Ilios is a postcard-perfect Mediterranean town, with a bustling harborside, winding paths for rambling hillside strolls, and gorgeous vistas. It is the ideal vacation stop for people looking for a place to relax, or for those interested in exploring the ruins scattered at the top of the island, where many artifacts and relics of the ancient world have been recently unearthed.

Career Profile Reset
This patch includes a full wipe of players’ Career Profiles. As a result, the Career Profile page will appear empty when you first log in after patching, and your previous "Personal Best" records will be reset. (Note: This wipe will not affect matchmaking, player levels, progression, or rewards.)

General:

Map Updates:
  • Health pack placement has been adjusted across all maps
  • Payload sizes have been adjusted to ensure that all heroes can move around them in narrow locations
  • Numbani
    • Significant art changes have been made throughout the map
  • Temple of Anubis
    • A new route has been added to reach the second capture point
    • The temple gate leading to the second capture point is now wider

Play Modes:

  • Play vs. A.I.
    • Players can now select their desired A.I. difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard)
    • Added kill cam functionality
    • Added Zarya and Roadhog as A.I. opponents
  • Custom Game
    • Added the ability to invite players by using their BattleTag
    • Added the ability to auto-fill teams with invited players or A.I.
    • Added Zarya and Roadhog as A.I. opponents

Progression Rewards:

  • Several new sprays have been added
  • Signature, cheer, and taunt emote rewards are now available for all heroes
  • New Legendary skins and themes have been added for several heroes:
    • “Steambot” Bastion
    • "Wooden” Bastion
    • “Space Frog” Lúcio
    • “Mystery Man” McCree
    • “Raptorion” Pharah
    • “Lionhardt” Reinhardt
    • “Spirit of: 76” Soldier: 76

Miscellaneous:

  • Default emotes have been added for all heroes and are immediately available in the communications wheel
  • End-of-match commendations have received a tuning pass
  • End-of-match medal art has been updated
  • Mercy has been recast for the English version of the game
    • Developer comments: When casting for Overwatch, we often try to find actors who are fluent in the character’s native language. In the case of Mercy, we were able to find an actress that both captured the essence of the character and was able to speak German, which you will be able to hear in this version.

Hero Balance Changes:

Junkrat
  • RIP-Tire
    • Ultimate charge cost increased by 25%

Developer comments: After last patch’s improvements to RIP-Tire, the speed at which Junkrat could activate his Ultimate was too frequent in comparison. Since RIP-Tire now has a much higher impact, we’ve adjusted the cost of his Ultimate to reflect that.

Lúcio

  • Health increased from 150 to 200
  • Sonic Amplifier
    • Damage reduced by 20%
    • Projectile size slightly reduced
  • Sound Barrier
    • Ultimate charge cost increased by 25%

Developer comments: We’ve been listening to feedback from all sources and decided to try some alternate changes to Lúcio, taking a different approach from the last patch. The goal here is to let Lúcio to be a difficult support to kill, but reduce his combat effectiveness and make him less of a good duelist. We also felt Lúcio could also activate his Sound Barrier too frequently considering its impact, so the cost of his Ultimate has been adjusted as a result.

Mei

  • Endothermic Blaster
    • Alternative Fire Projectile speed increased by 50%
    • Fire rate increased by 25%
    • Ammunition cost reduced from 40 to 25

Developer comments: In an ideal world, Mei is selected for her control and resilience, rather than her damage output. That said, we felt that there was still room to give her more consistent damage without compromising these goals. These changes are pretty significant, so we’ll be watching their impact closely.

Zenyatta

  • Orb of Harmony and Orb of Discord will no longer stack with each other
  • Transcendence
    • Ultimate charge cost increased by 25%

Developer comments: Zenyatta’s “orb stacking” could cause some degenerate situations—such as a player becoming nearly un-killable if he or she had several Orbs of Harmony buffs active at the same time. Also, much like Lúcio, we felt like Zenyatta could activate Transcendence too frequently considering its impact on a game, so his Ultimate cost has been scaled up to accommodate.

Bug Fixes:

Spectating
  • The “On Fire” mechanic while viewed through the Spectator Mode UI should scale down appropriately with the size of hero portraits

(source)

In addition to the changes mentioned in the patch notes, there have been a plethora of other fixes that haven't been reported. Some of these changes include:
  • D.VA changes to Defense Matrix from the February 9th Patch reverted
  • Tracer's Pulse Pistols have a reduced spread and higher accuracy
  • Various changes to the private game Lobby UI
  • Native resolutions are now marked with a * in the options menu
  • Lúcio can't use Sonic Amplifier knockback and melee at the same time anymore
  • Color saturation on almost all maps reworked
  • Lúcio's announcer changed back to the old one
  • Traveltime on Hanzo's arrows sped up (not confirmed)
  • Possibly changes to the mouse input and netcode
  • Performance on various maps have been improved.

As always it will be very interesting to see the effect that the balance changes have on the meta game. Early trends suggest that Mei is a bit too powerful now and will possibly replace McCree in lineups, considering there is barely any reason to run McCree over Mei damage-wise now and Mei offers way more utility.

Necropolis Ana Amari has made Necropolis her personal hideout—and an impromptu field base where she can keep an eye on things.
Head to Ana’s preferred vantage point at the top of the ruins, and use the high ground (and the element of surprise) against the enemy team. Or walk the stone corridors below, and take the fight to them directly—just watch out for pits!

Castillo Castillo is an old fort looking out over Dorado’s bay. It’s the location of Calaveras, a bar frequented by questionable patrons; a graffitied Los Muertos hangout; and Sombra’s hacking den.
Test your skills against the enemy team throughout Castillo’s multiple levels, and use its winding stairs for cover and strategic advantage.

Black Forest On the outskirts of Eichenwalde, the misty Black Forest map wraps around a long-overlooked battlefield dotted with the wreckage of Bastion units.
Flank your opponents on pathways between the castle and woods, and use the wooden balconies to move between the second stories of houses throughout the forest.

Celebrate Overwatch’s anniversary with a slew of new rewards. Crack open an Anniversary Loot Box and unlock skins like Lúcio’s Jazz DJ, Honey Bee Mei, Dune Buggy Bastion, Cruiser D.Va, Sentai Genji, Stealth Hanzo, Mecha Zarya, Cyborg 76, and more! In addition to the new items in the Overwatch Anniversary event, we’re also adding new goodies to our standard loot boxes. Sombra, Orisa, and Tracer are all getting brand new emotes, and Reaper picks up several new unlocks based on the infamous shrug from the recent Uprising comic.

      GENERAL
      Custom Games and Game Browser
Added new rules sets for 3v3 and 1v1 Elimination modes on the Arena maps Added options for Hero Lockout, Limited Hero Pool, Tiebreakers, and Hero Reveal for Elimination mode Players can now disable secondary fire and secondary weapons in Custom Games You can now disable one Symmetra ultimate while leaving the other active
      HERO UPDATES

      General
Recoil Recovery Aim Compensation can now be disabled for Ana, McCree, and Widowmaker. The option can be found under the “Control” tab in the “Options” menu. Simply select the appropriate hero under the dropdown menu and look for the “Hero” section
Developer Comments: By default, weapon recoil recovery is overruled by downward crosshair movement. This means that downward movement during the weapon’s recoil recovery phase will override the weapon’s natural recoil recovery. This option allows you to remove this functionality, meaning a weapon’s natural recoil recovery movement acts independently from downward crosshair movement. In practice, this will make your crosshair move faster if you aim downward during the recoil recovery window.

      Genji
Removed the attack delay from Genji's wall climbing ability, allowing him to engage with enemies immediately after he finishes climbing Developer Comments: This is a quality of life change to make wall climbing feel better.

      Hanzo
Removed the attack cooldown from Hanzo’s wall climbing ability, allowing him to engage with enemies immediately after he finishes climbing   Storm Bow Increase charge speed by 10% Charged arrows now maintain their charge after climbing a wall, provided the button is continuously held
Developer Comments: Decreasing Hanzo’s draw time gives him more overall DPS, while also letting him fully charge an arrow and more quickly return to full movement speed when needed. And, like the change to Genji’s wall climbing, this is a quality of life change that will make climbing feel better.

      Orisa
Fusion Driver Damage reduced by 9%   Protective Barrier Cooldown reduced from 12 seconds to 8 seconds Developer Comments: To help Orisa maintain the front line for her team, we’re reducing the cooldown of her Protective Barrier. This change also helps her reposition the barrier more easily when needed. To compensate for this new defensive strength, we're reducing her Fusion Driver's damage, as it felt too high.

      Reaper
Wraith Form Ammo is now entirely refilled when Wraith Form is used Developer Comments: Wraith Form is typically used as an escape ability after firing. This change gives Reaper a fighting chance if an enemy chases him down as he uses it.

      Reinhardt
Earthshatter Effective height has been lowered from 3 meters to 2 meters The height threshold of objects that Earthshatter can "climb" has been lowered from 3 meters to 2 meters, making Earthshatter less likely to climb tall objects as it moves along the ground. Developer Comments: Earthshatter tended to climb unexpectedly high, frequently hitting targets that were significantly above the ground. These changes help the ability stay more grounded.

      Soldier: 76
Heavy Pulse Rifle Bullet damage decreased from 20 to 19 Developer Comments: Soldier: 76 is in a much better place lately, but his damage output was making him a must pick, compared to similar roles.

      USER INTERFACE UPDATES
Your final blows are now highlighted by a white background in the Kill Feed Added new Kill Feed icons for environmental kills and a number of abilities Heroes resurrected by Mercy are now are now highlighted and color-coded in the Kill Feed Certain types of assists, like McCree’s Flashbang or Zenyatta’s Orb of Discord, now show up in the Kill Feed New Controller option: Force Keyboard/Mouse User Interface Developer Comments: When PC players switch from using the Keyboard/Mouse to a game controller, the game’s user interface is dynamically updated to the console/controller version. Additionally, the button layout on many heroes (like Hanzo, Zenyatta, and Mercy) is different on console. In the past, when a player chose to play using a controller and a mouse, the UI would constantly switch, depending on which device was sending information to the game. This new option allows players to set a default user interface if they choose to use a controller along with a keyboard/mouse.

Previously unseen early hero concept art, Genji and Hanzo were one hero, Reaper and Tracer were from Titan, McCree's gun was from Half-Life and more.
The presumably final installment of IGN's "Hero Secrets" series where Jeff Kaplan tells us about early development weirdness is here and it focuses on Offense. In this edition we find out that Genji and Hanzo were originally 1 character with all those weapons they have, McCree's gun was Half-Life inspired, Reaper and Tracer were originally in Titan and more. The previous three episodes had some pretty interesting stuff on Support, Defense and Tanks, like Lucio's timestop ult, D.Va's buggyness, Bastion's many many ult variations and more - you can check them out here.
The video also has some previously unreleased early concept art for Pharah and Tracer as well:

We saw the early build secrets for the support heroes yesterday, including Lucio's timestop ult, and today it's time for the tanks and defense heroes to share their dirty laundry! Bastion has had the most ults in the game during development, including a mobile mine that he could trigger, which was apparently one of the worst and most hated ults in the game - so Bastion wasn't exactly popular back then either! It seems defense heroes (other than perhaps Junkrat) are generally the most disliked when used against you, with Mei and Hanzo probably standing at the top of that particular list, so definitely check out the stores about their early versions.
And then there's the tanks, with D.Va being the most buggy and problematic whenever anything changes in the game and Reinhardt having been a mech piloted by a little girl, which obviously later led to Orisa.
And in case you missed yesterday's support video, here it is as well:
