Disc vs. Shadow - Viability in Mythic+

Recommended Posts

Up until Legion, I've primary spent my time in game in Areans or BGs, however the concept of Mythic+ really intrigues me. I'm stuck trying though trying to decide which class I want to main spec before Legion comes out.

The reason why it's a concern now, is because I don't want to start dumping my artifact power into one weapon, only to, down the road, regret my decision and switch. To my knowledge there's no way to "refund" artifact power at this time - please stop my now if there is.

Furthermore, I want to chose a spec that's going to be both viable in PVP (3's mostly) and Mythic+ dungeons (I know, I'm asking for a lot here). I already know Shadow is going to be a strong contender in 3's and I'm fairly certain Disc will be as well (I think, I hope). What I don't know, is where do they both stand in Mythic+.

I've stayed away from Legion Dungeons on the beta to avoid spoilers, but on live, they seem to struggle with AoE healing (at least compared to other healers). Has anyone played either spec on the beta, in Mythic+ and would care to share their experience?

I'm sure it'll come up, so let me get it out of the way --- I have no interest in playing Holy. Yes, I know they're an amazing healer. They spec as a whole does not appeal to me, the whole "holy light" thing. I like Disc and Shadow, because of the lore surrounding them and it's what kept me playing a priest for 8 years now.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Discipline has no trouble with AoE healing provided you know when the burst damage is coming. Discipline remains the only healing spec that emphasizes proactive healing - which means using Rapture for bubble spam and PW:Radiance to spread Atonement when it's down. Pop Rapture, then PW:R if you need Atonement on a few more people, then drop your Shadowfiend/Mindbender and a haste cooldown (trinket or PI) and watch the raid...not die. Your setup needs to happen well before the damage you're trying to heal through (which has been true of Discipline for years) and once you're finished with setup, you go back to your damage rotation and let Atonement do all the work.

Your SF/MB does a crapton of damage, and that's only made more noticeable when you give it a haste buff. Then again, since MB only has a 1min CD, it's not something you really want to hold on to. Just drop that fucker. He'll do work.

As for viability, Shadow is one of the top ten DPS specs right now. Actually #1 on council fights according to Noxxic. Discipline is almost always a strong healing spec, but it will always have that skill floor (minimum competency) that most other specs don't.

Before trusting anything Noxxic puts up, I would suggest checking out the rankings from the official Simcraft website.

Shadow sucks on single target, yet Noxxic lists it as #4 highest ST? Take the information they have there with a very large pinch of salt.

Shadow is only #6 on SimCraft's rankings for the same ilvl. The actual numbers they posted are only 30k apart, which isn't a terribly large variance considering first and last place vary by over 100,000 on both.

I think it's safe to say Shadow doesn't suck on ST.

You are looking at the SimCraft version for Surrender to Madness. If we assume perfect latency, perfect rotation and no errors in anything, yes, I agree, they don't.

If you make an error, you die from S2M and do 0 DPS. The skill floor you discuss isn't a simple one, it is a "mess up and kill yourself" sort of skill floor.

Look at where it is listed without S2M, nearly a 70k difference AND Noxxic doesn't even recommend using Surrender to Madness. I have no idea where they have pulled their numbers from.

Gordian Knot is a 20-man semi-hardcore raiding guild that consists of experienced raiders with some of them having raiding experience as far back as Vanilla.
We are a friendly group who enjoys World of Warcraft and loves raiding. We have fun and joke around but when bosses need to go down then all is serious! We wish for all our members to enjoy the game as much as we do and we expect raiders to maintain a 80% attendance per month.
We also enjoy a variety of other activities such as running a lot of Mythic+ dungeons doing alt-runs, achievement runs etc.
There are a few things we hold in high value but above else we value friendliness and politeness towards guildies and other players and skillfulness when it comes to the more serious parts of the game.
      CURRENTLY:
We raid 3 nights a week, Wednesdays, Sundays and Mondays, from 20:00 till 23:00 server time.
Although we are a 20-man guild, we usually run an extra group in order to get more people to experience the joys of raiding, help new raiders learn the Knot's way to down bosses and gearing up. Usually, these runs happen on Thursdays. Also, every Friday and sometimes Saturdays too, we're on RBGs killing alliance scums!
Saturdays are generally left for those RBGs or older content runs for fun and drinking!
Our current guild progress is 3/8 in The Eternal Palace mythic, and we're focusing on getting further Mythic progress. Our aim is to always progress as much as possible but also to have a relaxed and fun atmosphere at the same time!

      **Guild: <Nevermore> [Horde][US][PvP][Semi-Hardcore/PvP][Loot Council]**
**Raid Times:** Tues, Weds 9pm - 12am ET
**Goals:** Rekindle our romance with Vanilla by forming a close knit, active family of gamers. We will be focusing on raiding content as it's released, clearing content in a respectable manner, being one of the top guilds on our server. Beyond raiding we will be doing plenty of World PvP and pre-made BGs; if it's red, it's dead! We will choose a high-pop NON-STREAMER server.
**Sup?:** We have **vast experience in Vanilla raiding or obtained Rank 12+ in PvP**. We also have members that are just looking for an active and friendly community to call home and that's what we offer. **We are very active, chatting throughout the day and night, playing on beta or private servers, honing out our skills and learning to play with one another while we wait for launch.** We are a large family, just like Vanilla, where everyone works together for the common good, and everyone knows everyone. We're playing on Nighthaven while we await Classic's launch. Come play with us on NH and in Classic!
**Needs:** We're looking for additional experienced Vanilla raiders. That said, if you aren't familiar, but you're willing to read, listen, learn, or just want to come and have fun with us, we still want you.
      Druid (Resto): Medium
      Hunter: Low
      Mage: High

      Rogue: Low
      Shaman (Resto): Low
      Warlock: High
      Warrior (DPS): Low

**About Nevermore:** We are a large org with ~ 2,000 members in our Discord. We play various games, some more competitively than others. We've been around for roughly a year as an org. We also operate as a gaming league, hosting competitive seasonal game play and tournament play with cash prizes and sponsors for CSGO, Apex, and Overwatch.

      CYRUS | https://www.cyrus-gaming.com
      ALLIANCE, EU | English Speaking
Guild History | Guild Code | Apply

Established in 2009, Cyrus is a guild with its roots in MMO games reaching back to Warhammer Online. We are an organised and dedicated guild completely committed to getting the best out of our players while trying to keep track of where the fun is. We aren't afraid to put the hard work in, try out new strategies and we certainly aren't the type to give up after the first wipe - we will adapt, refocus and find a way to reach our objective.
Although Cyrus has at times been considered an elite guild, we are certainly not looking for elitist players. We value teamwork and positive attitude far more than individual ego and rhetoric. We recognise that we are only as good as those we run with, and that means if we want to improve we must improve not only ourselves but those around us. This is not achieved through bragging, whining or quitting - it's achieved through patience, practise and hard work. It's not about how good any individual is, it's about how good your group is and how you can work with others to improve it.
Cyrus is not a casual guild, and we have been greatly put off by the increasingly casual nature of MMOs recently. To us, guild and realm pride should mean something. We don't spam invite players, we ask members to apply to join us because they see something in us that they want to participate in. And in return, we work tirelessly to place the right people in the right groups, increase our players awareness and knowledge of the game and their class, and to organise varied and epic guild events that we will remember for years to come.
If you are looking to make your journey through World of Warcraft Classic legendary, and you are prepared to put the time and effort in to maximise not only your own, but your teams play style and skill, then Cyrus is the guild for you. You will need a thick skin, a good sense of humour, the discipline to know when to speak up and when to shut up, and the dedication to constantly evolve and improve.

This is a condensed version of our guild history. To read the full version, please click here.
We started life in Warhammer Online in March 2009 (originally called Exodus) and became the largest and most active Order PvP guild on the Karak-Norn server. We played a central role in co-ordinating our faction, hosting cross-alliance community initiatives to try and bring the many guilds and alliances on the server together in an attempt to take the fight to the numerically superior Destruction side.

Cyrus in Warhammer, known as Exodus. We fought for Order on Karak-Norn
We later moved to Aion where we became a top 10 ranked Elyos PvP guild on the Perento server. Intending to pursue our enjoyment of PvP, we were one of the primary guilds in the early days of the game, however the severe PvE grind and lack of meaningful PvP content meant that our player base changed somewhat and we became more of a PvE guild with occasional raids in the Abyss. We refocused when the ground PvP patch was released and had a lot more fun.

Cyrus in Aion. We fought for Elyos on Perento. Embracing the grind…
In Rift we combined these two playstyles and became unquestionably the most successful and talked about PvP guild on our server, all the while maintaining competitive PvE raids that cleared all content in the game. We were yet again the leading guild when it came to organising our faction, setting up server-wide PvP events to increase participation and enjoyment for all in the game.
Such was our success in the PvP lakes that we eventually ran out of opposition to fight against, so we transferred servers looking for new challenges. Our influence was so great that most guilds from both factions followed our move, and within a few weeks our previous server was transformed from the busiest EU PvP server to a trial realm!

Cyrus in Rift. We fought for Guardians on Whitefall. We dominated the PvP until everyone else quit crying.
After a brief spell in SWTOR, which was completely awful, we moved to World of Warcraft (Horde, Stormscale) in 2012. While we obviously didn’t find any Open World PvP, we did enjoy the challenges of running three Rated Battlegrounds teams, with the occasional Raid to pass the time. During our first full Rated Battlegrounds season we managed to take a group of mostly new-to-WoW players to a legitimate 2200+ rating, something that was not so simple to do as a guild in this game with all the win-traders and cheats.

Cyrus in WoW. From zero to 2200+, proving the doubters wrong!
Since then, we have dabbled in Final Fantasy XIV and been back to WoW. But these were the beginning of barren times, as games such as Guild Wars 2 and Wildstar, which should have been natural homes for guilds such as ours, failed to deliver on expectations. In 2016 we launched 'Club Cyrus' - a more casual multiplayer gaming initiative enabling us to at least play something together - Rocket League, The Division, Chivalry, Ghost Recon, etc. And while these games each gave us many hours of light entertainment, we have always yearned for an MMO to come along and do it old-school again, to give us a real home to stick with and build our characters and guild over 1000's of hours. Something that requires old-school effort, commitment and team work. Something that can help us escape our drab real lives, and instead transform into better looking, more in-shape, possibly even female (!) avatars with gloriously pixelated wardrobes that speak of our daring and courageous deeds on the virtual battlefield!

A typical Cyrus group lines up for a picture: Bruce, Dave, Steve, Alan and Dan.

      WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
While we have a strong core that are committed to giving up their social lives from August 27th, we need more bodies to throw on the pile. That’s where you come in! Cyrus is an 'old school' MMO guild, and we are looking for members who want to become part of a greater community, who want to put the effort in and earn their achievements rather than get carried.
We are looking for intelligent, active and friendly players to join our ranks. In World of Warcraft Classic, we are hoping to create a successful guild with outstanding organisation, solid progression and a shared objective. We want dedicated and reliable players who are in it for the long haul, who will not quit at the first or second hurdle, and will hold out for the payoff that such a team of players deserve. No elitism, no egos, and plenty of patience, reality and understanding. Ok, maybe a little bit of elitism!
Members should take the time to learn their class and skills, and how they can best benefit their guild teams. Being an excellent individual player is great, but it is far more important to be an excellent team player, to follow instructions, and to know when to stop joking around, focus, and stop standing in the lava! Your goals should be that of the guild as a whole, not of yourself.
Members are required to use Discord and have a clear, working microphone. We welcome members from all over the world, however we do ask that in guild chat and Discord English is used at all times.

      WHAT WE CAN OFFER
Cyrus is an experienced, focused, progression-based guild for mature, skilled and team-orientated players. We offer Discord voice communications with a mostly family-friendly atmosphere, as well as our own website which is used to organise pretty much everything we do. We have a long-established leadership who is committed to getting the most out of our members and ensuring everyone is working towards their own and the common goals of the guild.

Guild levelling PvP event in Rift. If you haven't experienced being in a really great guild before, get it right for WoW Classic!
We have a strong community spirit, and thanks to our successful recruitment in previous games, a very welcoming attitude towards new members of any experience level so long as they are prepared to put the time in. We do not form cliques, and we do not favour members based on their time or rank within the guild.
While Cyrus’ main objective will be clearing raid content, we are a guild steeped in the rich tradition of PvP and as such, you can expect organised Battlegrounds and World PvP nights. Our current plan is to raid two evenings per week, provisionally on Wednesdays and Sundays.

      HOW TO APPLY
