Disc vs. Shadow - Viability in Mythic+

Recommended Posts

Up until Legion, I've primary spent my time in game in Areans or BGs, however the concept of Mythic+ really intrigues me. I'm stuck trying though trying to decide which class I want to main spec before Legion comes out.

The reason why it's a concern now, is because I don't want to start dumping my artifact power into one weapon, only to, down the road, regret my decision and switch. To my knowledge there's no way to "refund" artifact power at this time - please stop my now if there is.

Furthermore, I want to chose a spec that's going to be both viable in PVP (3's mostly) and Mythic+ dungeons (I know, I'm asking for a lot here). I already know Shadow is going to be a strong contender in 3's and I'm fairly certain Disc will be as well (I think, I hope). What I don't know, is where do they both stand in Mythic+.

I've stayed away from Legion Dungeons on the beta to avoid spoilers, but on live, they seem to struggle with AoE healing (at least compared to other healers). Has anyone played either spec on the beta, in Mythic+ and would care to share their experience?

I'm sure it'll come up, so let me get it out of the way --- I have no interest in playing Holy. Yes, I know they're an amazing healer. They spec as a whole does not appeal to me, the whole "holy light" thing. I like Disc and Shadow, because of the lore surrounding them and it's what kept me playing a priest for 8 years now.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Discipline has no trouble with AoE healing provided you know when the burst damage is coming. Discipline remains the only healing spec that emphasizes proactive healing - which means using Rapture for bubble spam and PW:Radiance to spread Atonement when it's down. Pop Rapture, then PW:R if you need Atonement on a few more people, then drop your Shadowfiend/Mindbender and a haste cooldown (trinket or PI) and watch the raid...not die. Your setup needs to happen well before the damage you're trying to heal through (which has been true of Discipline for years) and once you're finished with setup, you go back to your damage rotation and let Atonement do all the work.

Your SF/MB does a crapton of damage, and that's only made more noticeable when you give it a haste buff. Then again, since MB only has a 1min CD, it's not something you really want to hold on to. Just drop that fucker. He'll do work.

As for viability, Shadow is one of the top ten DPS specs right now. Actually #1 on council fights according to Noxxic. Discipline is almost always a strong healing spec, but it will always have that skill floor (minimum competency) that most other specs don't.

Before trusting anything Noxxic puts up, I would suggest checking out the rankings from the official Simcraft website.

Shadow sucks on single target, yet Noxxic lists it as #4 highest ST? Take the information they have there with a very large pinch of salt.

Shadow is only #6 on SimCraft's rankings for the same ilvl. The actual numbers they posted are only 30k apart, which isn't a terribly large variance considering first and last place vary by over 100,000 on both.

I think it's safe to say Shadow doesn't suck on ST.

You are looking at the SimCraft version for Surrender to Madness. If we assume perfect latency, perfect rotation and no errors in anything, yes, I agree, they don't.

If you make an error, you die from S2M and do 0 DPS. The skill floor you discuss isn't a simple one, it is a "mess up and kill yourself" sort of skill floor.

Look at where it is listed without S2M, nearly a 70k difference AND Noxxic doesn't even recommend using Surrender to Madness. I have no idea where they have pulled their numbers from.

We are a friendly group who enjoys World of Warcraft and loves raiding. We have fun and joke around but when bosses need to go down then all is serious! We wish for all our members to enjoy the game as much as we do and we expect raiders to maintain a 80% attendance per month.
We also enjoy a variety of other activities such as running a lot of Mythic+ dungeons doing alt-runs, achievement runs etc.
There are a few things we hold in high value but above else we value friendliness and politeness towards guildies and other players and skillfulness when it comes to the more serious parts of the game.

We raid 3 nights a week, Wednesdays, Sundays and Mondays, from 20:00 till 23:00 server time.
Although we are a 20-man guild, we usually run an extra group in order to get more people to experience the joys of raiding, help new raiders learn the Knot's way to down bosses and gearing up. Usually, these runs happen on Thursdays. Also, every Friday and sometimes Saturdays too, we're on RBGs killing alliance scums!
Saturdays are generally left for those RBGs or older content runs for fun and drinking!
Our current guild progress is 9/12 in Ny'alotha heroic, and we're focusing on getting further Mythic progress. Our aim is to always progress as much as possible but also to have a relaxed and fun atmosphere at the same time!

      SERVER: Illidan (Server Time: CT)
      RAID TIMES: Fri/Sat, 6p-9p PST / 8p-11p CT / 9p-12a EST
      PROGRESSION: 8/8M EP (US 198 & Server 19), 9/9M BoD
      PERSONAL LOOT SYSTEM: RCLootCouncil*

*All tradeable loot is distributed using a loot council system. We view gear as a tool to assist in progression and farm, and all loot decisions are made by the officers with the intent to improve our ability to kill future bosses.
      CURRENTLY RECRUITING
All exceptional DPS! But in need of below classes:
Boomy Spriest Warlock Mage ABOUT US
Big Brain Boys is currently ranked the #1 two-day guild and the #1 weekend guild on US-Illidan. We formed at the beginning of BoD and have achieved Cutting Edge in the major raid tiers since then, and plan to keep doing so throughout the rest of BFA into Shadowlands. We're currently looking for skilled raiders for the current and upcoming raid tiers.
We provide cauldrons and vantus runes for every raid night. Raiders are expected to bring their own food, pre-pots, and healing pots.
Our trial period is at minimum a month. Keep in mind that our end-times can be extended by up to one hour for boss progression. You are expected to be able to continue raiding when we choose to extend, so make sure your schedule allows for this.
      GOALS
We want to establish a group of committed individuals to pursue Mythic content to achieve Cutting Edge. Not at breakneck speed, but at a constant rate of progression.
      EXPECTATIONS
Our raiders should be willing to put the effort into clearing Mythic raids, as well as doing sufficient prep-work outside of raid. (Leveling your HoA, M+, expeditions, WQs.) You should know when you should be serious and when you can joke around (i.e. joking around on trash or farm bosses vs being serious on progression).
We try to keep a roster of 21-23 raiders. This is so we have a diverse lineup that can be adjusted for different encounters and is still able to raid on weekends when people are absent. We encourage a 90%+ attendance record. We understand real life happens, but if you are on our roster, we expect you'll commit time to our raid hours and prep requirements.
      JOINING THE BOYS
Please follow the link below to fill out our app.
      Big Brain Boys Application
If you have questions about the application process you can reach out to one of our officers below via Bnet. We will reach out to you if we are interested in discussing your application.

      FULL GUILD INFORMATION

Overdraft is a Mythic Progression Raiding guild on Sargeras.  We are a mythic progression guild on a casual (6 hour) schedule.  Overdraft is one of the top two-night guilds on US-Sargeras.

If you have strong situational awareness, know your class inside and out, and enjoy raiding in a friendly environment, OD might be the place for you!

      <<Raid Schedule >>

Overdraft has two core raid nights per week - Wednesdays and Sundays 7:00pm to 10:00pm EST.  We do not extend past those hours at launch nor for progression.

In addition to our raid schedule, various members run M+ on off nights and even some are altaholics who like to run Flex 30 content or even lower M+ keys.

      <<About Us>>

Overdraft was formerly part of the Currently Online community of Sargeras.  Currently Online is one of the largest ‘Mega Guilds’ in World of Warcraft. During our time with Currently Online, we were known as ‘Team Overdraft’ and decided after clearing Heroic Battle of Dazar’alor, to pursue becoming Mythic Progression focused raid team.

Overdraft is a group of adult, mature raiders that share a common vision: a skilled, progression raiding environment with a reasonable raiding schedule. We take raiding seriously and progress, but we refuse to lose sight of what’s truly important – having fun and maintaining balance. We are an all adult guild, 18+ required/21+ preferred. The majority of us have grown up playing WoW, with an average age of late 20s/early 30s.

OD guild members are working adults and act like adults. We treat each other with respect, and in doing so, earn it. From the raid leader down to trial members, you can expect a calm, cool, and collected demeanor and a respectful tone at all times. If you enjoy linking meters and raging at team members during progression, then this guild is NOT for you. If you thrive with a bit of constructive criticism and understand that raiding takes a whole team, not just one elite dps/tank/healer, then you are the right fit!
