HotS_Zarya.jpg

The Machines of War event continues and we have yet another huge patch waiting to be tested on the PTR. This time, you can try Zarya, the new battleground Warhead Junction, three reworked heroes and more.

The StarCraft event in Heroes of the Storm has been received with enthusiasm by the community and now it's time for the second and final round of updates. The most exciting additions are the new hero Zarya and the new battleground Warhead Junction. Moreover, three heroes are getting a rework this time: Nazeebo, Chen and E.T.C. Other heroes that received balance changes are Li-Ming, Malfurion, Tychus and Kharazim.

    • Warhead Junction
    • Braxis Holdout
    • Towers of Doom
    • Dragon Shire
    • Battlefield of Eternity

  • The reduced Battleground pool will remain in effect until the Machines of War event concludes during the week of October 17.

Tutorial Improvements

  • The second tutorial mission has received significant changes to gameplay, user interface, and instruction flow. This mission should now better serve to introduce players to some of Heroes of the Storm’s unique mechanics.

New Hero: Zarya

Aleksandra Zaryanova is one of the world's strongest women and was a promising athlete, but all that changed when the Siberian omnium reawakened. As a soldier in the Russian Defense Force, she now proudly uses her strength to protect the ones she loves.

Trait

  • Energy
    • Each time Zarya’s Personal Barrier or Shield Ally absorbs 10 damage, her Energy is increased by 1. Each point of Energy increases Zarya’s damage by 2%. After 0.5 seconds, Energy decays by 3 per second.

Basic Abilities

  • Particle Grenade (Q)
    • Launch a Particle Grenade that deals damage to enemies within a small area. Deals 50% damage to Structures.
  • Personal Barrier (W)
    • Gain a Shield that absorbs damage for 3 seconds.
  • Shield Ally (E)
    • Grants an allied Hero a Shield that absorbs damage for 3 seconds.

Heroic Abilities

  • Graviton Surge (R)
    • Launch a gravity bomb that detonates after 1 second and draws enemy Heroes toward the center for 2.5 seconds.
  • Expulsion Zone (R)
    • Launch a gravity bomb that deals light damage and creates an expulsion zone for 3.5 seconds. Enemies who enter the affected area are knocked back and have their Movement Speed reduced by 50% for 1 second.

New Battleground: Warhead Junction

Once a testing facility for nuclear weapons, Warhead Junction has since fallen into ruin. However, the site's abandonment hasn't stopped its glitchy adjutant from continuing to produce and hand out nuclear weapons. Join the arms race of Warhead Junction, build up your stockpile, and rain hell on your enemies!

Warhead Deployment

  • Multiple Warheads will spawn periodically across the battleground.

Collect Warheads

  • Pick up a Warhead to activate your Nuke. Use it or you will drop it when you die!

Call Down the Thunder

  • Launch Nukes to devastate the enemy team's fortifications.

    Abilities

    • Arcane Orb (W)
      • Beginning size reduced by roughly 33%
      • Maximum size reduced by roughly 33%
      • Explosion radius reduced by roughly 15%

    Talents

    • Level 4
      • Triumvirate (W)
        • Now reduces the cooldown of Arcane Orb by 50%, instead of 5 seconds
        • Travel distance required reduced from 65 to 50%
    • Level 7
      • Zei's Vengeance (W)
        • Added functionality:
          • Now also reduces the cooldown of Arcane Orb by 25%
Developer Comments:  Arcane Orb and the Talents affecting it have been slightly underperforming over the past couple months. We are also unhappy with the unpredictably large explosion radius that occurs at close range detonations. To address these concerns, we have made some base size adjustments to the Orb missile while also buffing Zei’s Vengeance to help round out the full build. While the size changes definitely look like a nerf on paper, in actual testing we felt like they gave players tighter control with a lot less early-detonations on unintended targets.

    Tychus

    Divider_Hero_Tychus_Crop.png

    Stats

    • Base Maximum Health increased from 1836 to 1925
    • Base Health Regeneration increased from 3.8 to 4

    Talents

    • Level 1
      • Press the Advantage (E)
        • Basic Attack Range bonus increased from 25 to 35%
      • Combat Tactician (E)
        • Cooldown reduction increased from .75 to .8 seconds per Basic Attack.
      • Shrug It Off (E)
        • Removed
Developer Comments: After the change the Relentless Soldier in a previous patch, Tychus had 2 different ways to gain Resistant. While we like that Tychus is a “tanky Assassin”, we felt that him having more ways to mitigate damage than some melee Assassins to be too much. We decided to remove Shrug It Off because it felt misplaced on a tier that was primarily about Utility and Mobility. To compensate for the loss of Shrug It Off, we’ve decided to buff his baseline Health and Regeneration and the other Talent options at level 1.

Developer Comments:  Nazeebo is one of the oldest Heroes in the game, and his Talent tree was in dire need of an upgrade. The goal of the revamp was to increase the reward of mastering the Hero’s Abilities, maintain his identity as a zone control and damage over time character, embrace the fun mini-game that was Death Ritual, and provide interesting synergies between Abilities and Talents. We wanted to be sure to reinforce the designed weaknesses of the Hero that are lack of burst and lack of mobility, while still making him viable in the current metagame of Heroes of the Storm. Overall, a lot of his old Talents had to be revamped or replaced, but we find that he still feels a lot like the old Nazeebo, just more interesting!

Developer Comments:  While we realize that Malfurion’s talent tree could use some work, and we want to do a deeper dive in the future, we wanted to give him a better niche among our other Support heroes in the meantime. His throughput healing should be higher, and a bigger part of his gameplay should now be rolling his heal-over-time effects among multiple allies to keep them alive. He now also has the unique ability to give allies cooldown reduction in addition to Mana, which should give him a new reason to be considered being added to a team. We’ve also buffed the initial root search for his Entangling Roots, which will enable him to more reliably root enemy Heroes instead of relying on his teammates to secure crowd control.

Developer Comments:  We know how much passion our players have for Chen and spent months upgrading his Talent Tree to our newest philosophies. To give you an idea of what we were looking to improve, here were a couple of our goals with this update: Chen should be able to be a solo-tank for your team and not be afraid to constantly soak enemy skill-shots. Chen should be a constant threat to the enemy’s backline damage dealers. Chen should deal low amounts of burst damage while continually applying sustained damage at pointed targets. Chen should be extremely resilient in the absence of enemy stuns. As always, we are listening to your feedback and appreciate everyone taking the time to send it to us. Enjoy the new Talent Tree, and as Chen has said many times before- “It is important to master the Brew and not let it master you!”

Developer Comments:  We like E.T.C.’s core gameplay, but wanted to improve his talent diversity. Many E.T.C. players end up picking the same talents in most games, especially at Levels 1 and 4, due to the importance of buffing Powerslide. We’ve streamlined that power, and have given him more options to play up the bard aspect of his kit, which should make him more of a team player.

Another notable change is the first ever price increase: Muradin's gold price has been increased to 4,000 gold and $6.49 USD. To compensate, Diablo's prices have been reduced to 2,000 Gold and $3.49 respectively. Spyrian talked a bit about this change on Reddit:

    Blizzard LogoSpyrian

While we will be increasing Muradin's price a bit once the patch hits the live game next week, it's worth mentioning that we're also reducing Diablo's price from 7k to 2k so that we still have 2 warriors at that level.

We've done a couple of price increases in the past, though that was quite a while ago (during Tech Alpha, if memory serves). We've also given a bit of advanced notice so that you still have a little over a week to drum up the 2,000 gold needed to buy Muradin if you don't have him already.

    (source)

We're not increasing the price on the Starter Bundle. It'll have a slightly higher overall discount amount because Muradin's base price is increasing, but we plan to keep the bundle's price the same. (source)

Spyrian acknowledges the price increase for Muradin, but doesn't say why.  I mean I know its their product and they can dictate what they do with it, but I'm curious why they are suddenly increasing his price.  TBH it doesn't effect me as I already own him, but I just don't see what changed all of a sudden.  Anyone here know why Blizz decided this?

Perhaps due to heroes changing in difficulty or value to a team? Not sure though.

Mid-Season Brawl is the first global event of 2017 and top teams from every region will compete in a round robin group stage from June 10 - 14. Advancing teams will be playing out a modified double elimination bracket from June 17 - 19. Victors can earn up to $80,000. 12 teams will be split into two groups of six. If you've been watching HGC, you should be familiar with all its casters. We'll see Grubby, Trikslyr, Kael & others.
        Blizzard (Source)
With the HGC Playoffs behind us, we now look ahead to the Mid-Season Brawl. The first global event of the year features top teams from every region traveling to Stockholm to compete in a round robin group stage from June 10 to 14.  The teams that advance will then travel to the main event in Jönköping, Sweden, to play out a modified double elimination bracket from June 17 to 19 as part of DreamHack Summer. A total of $250,000 will be on the line, with $80,000 awarded to the victors.
A cast of familiar HGC faces will be providing play-by-play commentary and analysis in Sweden:
Jaycie ‘Gillyweed’ Gluck Wade ‘Dreadnaught’ Penfold Tim ‘TrikSlyr’ Frazier Thomas ‘Khaldor’ Kilian Josh ‘Jhow’ Howard Christopher ‘Tetcher’ Ivermee Manuel ‘Grubby’ Schenkhuizen James ‘Kaelaris’ Carrol The 12 teams at the Mid-Season Brawl will be split into two groups of six. In Stockholm, each team will play every other team in their group in a two game series.  A Battleground win will be worth one (1) point, while winning both Battlegrounds will be worth three (3) points. The two teams with the least amount of points in their group will be eliminated while the rest will be seeded into the Phoenix bracket, so each team’s path through the group stage is crucial.
        Group A
Group A looks stacked, with the number one seeds from Europe and China battling it out with the second seeds from Korea and North America. There is also the Nomia factor — they qualified for the Mid-Season Brawl by winning through the Australia & New Zealand Finals last month. After forcing Battleground wins over Team Liquid and Team 8 at the Western Clash, it’s anyone’s guess how they will stack up against the competition three months later.
MVP Black – #2 Seed Korea
The champions of the Eastern Clash fell against L5 twice in the regular season but outside of their regional rival, MVP Black just doesn’t lose. They should be considered the early favorite to take home the trophy in Sweden. They dispatched of their sister team, MVP Miracle, in the finals of the HGC Korea Playoffs 3-0 to earn their spot at the Mid-Season Brawl. MVP Black currently has a 100% win rate with Zeratul in the Korean HGC. Support player Tae Jun ‘merryday’ Yi is also known for his Kharazim play. He currently has a 92% win rate on the Hero in Phase 1.
        Fnatic - #1 Seed Europe
The number one seed from Europe will be the most feared Western team at the Mid-Season Brawl thanks to their 3-1 win over MVP Black at the Fall Championship in November. With these two teams in the same group, you can expect that MVP Black will not let their guard down a second time. Expect Fnatic to utilize the likes of Chromie, Sylvanas, and Lunara in their repeat attempt to triumph over the Koreans on their home soil.
        CE - #1 Seed China
China’s top seed, CE, are a team of veteran players who competed on famous Chinese rosters of yore such as OMG, EDG, and the 2016 version of Super Perfect Team. CE dedicates a single person to laning while the rest of the team roams for kills. Aggression demands an answer; you can expect games against CE to resemble one long continuous team fight. The team prides themselves on their star Warrior player Junfeng ‘Wind’ Gu, who currently boast a 100% win rate on Muradin, E.T.C, and Stitches over the course of Phase 1.
        Team 8 - #2 Seed North America
Team 8 destroyed Gale Force eSports 3-1 in the North American playoffs. They will make their second live event appearance together at the Mid-Season Brawl after coming in fourth at the Western Clash. Opponents will look to ban Mike ‘Glaurung’ Fisk’s comfort picks of Medivh and Zeratul, but they should also be worried about Warrior player Justin ‘Justing’ Gapp. Justing has made a name for himself in Phase 1 on Diablo, E.T.C., and Varian. After the results they’ve managed to post in the first 10 weeks, it would be unwise for any team to underestimate them in Sweden.
Nomia - Australia & New Zealand
On day one at the Western Clash we saw Team Liquid — the only undefeated team in the HGC at the time — go up against Nomia from the Australia & New Zealand region. Nomia shocked everyone by taking the first game and setting the tone for the event. Nomia spends a great amount of time watching Korean VODs and learning from their playstyle, adopting it as their own. It’s safe to say no team will let their guard down against Nomia at the Mid-Season Brawl thanks to their past performances.
        Deadlykittens - Southeast Asia
Deadlykittens have only made one roster change since attending the Fall Championship under the name Imperium Pro Team. Two members, Michael ‘Mirr’ Luo and Bjorn ‘Zeys’ Ong, played with Relics at 2015’s Americas Championship. While they may not be the most well-known players, members of Deadlykitten have appeared at every international Heroes of the Storm competition in the past year except for the Eastern Clash. Even though they usually appear a few steps behind the rest of the world’s best, Deadlykittens absolutely have the experience necessary to force an upset in Sweden.
        Group B
Group B will likely belong to L5, but you can’t count out Team Dignitas, who bolstered a miracle run at the Western Clash to take home the trophy. eStar did not have a chance to play against L5 at the Eastern Clash, but they did manage to take MVP Black to a fifth map, so it will be interesting to see if the Chinese powerhouse can manage better results against Korea’s number one seed in Sweden.
        L5 - #1 Seed Korea
Trumped only by MVP Black at the Eastern Clash, L5 have been on a tear since winning the Fall Championship in November. Back on the worlds stage as Korea’s top seed, all eyes will be on L5 as they embark on yet another rally to the finals of an international competition. Look for L5 to draft Li-Ming for flex player Jin Su ‘NaCHoJin’ Park, who currently boasts an 80% win rate with the Wizard.
Team Dignitas - #2 Seed Europe
The Western Clash champions come into the Mid-Season brawl as Europe’s second seed. While they haven’t had great results against opponents in global events of the past, the addition of Zaelia to the roster places higher expectations on Team Dignitas now more than ever. They have been to every single international event in Heroes esports history — with that amount of experience in the bag, they are and will always be a threat on the main stage.
        eStar - #2 Seed China
Another incredibly aggressive Chinese team, eStar as a brand has been around since the early days of Heroes esports. eStar has represented China in some form at nearly every international event since then, generally posting somewhat successful results. In recent history, however, they’ve fared poorly at international events. They bombed out at the Fall Championship and the Gold Club World Championship (GCWC), and only lately have returned to form by placing fourth at the Eastern Clash. eStar has a lot to prove here at the Mid-Season Brawl as they are tasked with not only taking down the Korean teams, but the new threat out of Europe.
Tempo Storm #1 Seed North America
North America’s top seed went 7-0 after returning from the Western Clash with disappointing results. The team seems in form now and ready to give the rest of the world a run for their money. Tempo Storm have not changed their roster since last summer, when they won back to back regional events to qualify for the Fall Championship. Their showing against the Eastern teams has been dismal, however, taking last place at GCWC. When it to comes to their prospects in Group B, Tempo Storm has struggled against Team Dignitas in the past, falling to them at both GCWC and the 2016 Fall Championship. This year is an entirely different animal, however. Tempo Storm will be out for revenge against Europe at the Mid-Season Brawl.
        Soul Torturers - Taiwan
Soul Torturers consists of three members formerly of Please Buff Arthas (PBA), the Taiwanese team that eliminated Gale Force eSports at 2016’s Summer Championship. At the Fall Championship, PBA took it to the next level by defeating both eStar and the team we now know as Tempo Storm. While the new iteration of their roster is unproven against international opponents, they certainly have a legacy to live up to when it comes to Taiwan.
        RED Canids – Latin America
RED Canids won through the upper bracket of the Copa America Season Finals to qualify for the Mid-Season Brawl. Juan ‘Jschritte’ Passos has led yet another team to an international event, this time featuring former members of Burning Rage (who competed with Jschritte at the Fall Championship). While Latin America has struggled to post results against the rest of the world before, there is now a lot more available data to draw on when it comes to analysing the top teams. We will see if the RED Canids have done their homework.
Each of the teams at the Mid-Season Brawl has their work cut out for them in the initial group stage. With quick two game matches, there won’t be much time to learn and adjust, so each team will likely spend the next couple of weeks plotting strategies and tactics that will lead to successful tournament runs, rather than settling for solid play.
For now, all eyes will be on the Crucible, kicking off this weekend for Europe, North America, and Korea. More detailed information on the Crucible, and the unveiling of the official matchups for each region will be live on May 23.
Our coverage of the HGC Postseason is just beginning. Keep it tuned to playheroes.com/esports as we dive into the first round matchups and explore the storylines that have unfolded over the three months leading up to this monumental event.
