The Machines of War event continues and we have yet another huge patch waiting to be tested on the PTR. This time, you can try Zarya, the new battleground Warhead Junction, three reworked heroes and more.

The StarCraft event in Heroes of the Storm has been received with enthusiasm by the community and now it's time for the second and final round of updates. The most exciting additions are the new hero Zarya and the new battleground Warhead Junction. Moreover, three heroes are getting a rework this time: Nazeebo, Chen and E.T.C. Other heroes that received balance changes are Li-Ming, Malfurion, Tychus and Kharazim.

General

New Map Rotation

  • Starting September 27, the pool of Battlegrounds available in all modes, except Custom Games, will be temporarily limited to the following:
    • Warhead Junction
    • Braxis Holdout
    • Towers of Doom
    • Dragon Shire
    • Battlefield of Eternity
    • Cursed Hollow
  • During this time, players can still select and play on any Battleground they wish using Custom Games.
  • The reduced Battleground pool will remain in effect until the Machines of War event concludes during the week of October 17.

 

Tutorial Improvements

  • The second tutorial mission has received significant changes to gameplay, user interface, and instruction flow. This mission should now better serve to introduce players to some of Heroes of the Storm’s unique mechanics.

New Hero: Zarya

Aleksandra Zaryanova is one of the world's strongest women and was a promising athlete, but all that changed when the Siberian omnium reawakened. As a soldier in the Russian Defense Force, she now proudly uses her strength to protect the ones she loves.

Trait

  • Energy
    • Each time Zarya’s Personal Barrier or Shield Ally absorbs 10 damage, her Energy is increased by 1. Each point of Energy increases Zarya’s damage by 2%. After 0.5 seconds, Energy decays by 3 per second.

Basic Abilities

  • Particle Grenade (Q)
    • Launch a Particle Grenade that deals damage to enemies within a small area. Deals 50% damage to Structures.
  • Personal Barrier (W)
    • Gain a Shield that absorbs damage for 3 seconds.
  • Shield Ally (E)
    • Grants an allied Hero a Shield that absorbs damage for 3 seconds.

Heroic Abilities

  • Graviton Surge (R)
    • Launch a gravity bomb that detonates after 1 second and draws enemy Heroes toward the center for 2.5 seconds.
  • Expulsion Zone (R)
    • Launch a gravity bomb that deals light damage and creates an expulsion zone for 3.5 seconds. Enemies who enter the affected area are knocked back and have their Movement Speed reduced by 50% for 1 second.

New Battleground: Warhead Junction

Once a testing facility for nuclear weapons, Warhead Junction has since fallen into ruin. However, the site's abandonment hasn't stopped its glitchy adjutant from continuing to produce and hand out nuclear weapons. Join the arms race of Warhead Junction, build up your stockpile, and rain hell on your enemies!

Warhead Deployment

  • Multiple Warheads will spawn periodically across the battleground.

Collect Warheads

  • Pick up a Warhead to activate your Nuke. Use it or you will drop it when you die!

Call Down the Thunder

  • Launch Nukes to devastate the enemy team's fortifications.

    Developer Comments:  Arcane Orb and the Talents affecting it have been slightly underperforming over the past couple months. We are also unhappy with the unpredictably large explosion radius that occurs at close range detonations. To address these concerns, we have made some base size adjustments to the Orb missile while also buffing Zei’s Vengeance to help round out the full build. While the size changes definitely look like a nerf on paper, in actual testing we felt like they gave players tighter control with a lot less early-detonations on unintended targets.

We decided to remove Shrug It Off because it felt misplaced on a tier that was primarily about Utility and Mobility. To compensate for the loss of Shrug It Off, we’ve decided to buff his baseline Health and Regeneration and the other Talent options at level 1.

    Developer Comments:  Nazeebo is one of the oldest Heroes in the game, and his Talent tree was in dire need of an upgrade. The goal of the revamp was to increase the reward of mastering the Hero’s Abilities, maintain his identity as a zone control and damage over time character, embrace the fun mini-game that was Death Ritual, and provide interesting synergies between Abilities and Talents. We wanted to be sure to reinforce the designed weaknesses of the Hero that are lack of burst and lack of mobility, while still making him viable in the current metagame of Heroes of the Storm. Overall, a lot of his old Talents had to be revamped or replaced, but we find that he still feels a lot like the old Nazeebo, just more interesting!

    Developer Comments:  While we realize that Malfurion’s talent tree could use some work, and we want to do a deeper dive in the future, we wanted to give him a better niche among our other Support heroes in the meantime. His throughput healing should be higher, and a bigger part of his gameplay should now be rolling his heal-over-time effects among multiple allies to keep them alive. He now also has the unique ability to give allies cooldown reduction in addition to Mana, which should give him a new reason to be considered being added to a team. We’ve also buffed the initial root search for his Entangling Roots, which will enable him to more reliably root enemy Heroes instead of relying on his teammates to secure crowd control.

    Developer Comments:  We know how much passion our players have for Chen and spent months upgrading his Talent Tree to our newest philosophies. To give you an idea of what we were looking to improve, here were a couple of our goals with this update: Chen should be able to be a solo-tank for your team and not be afraid to constantly soak enemy skill-shots. Chen should be a constant threat to the enemy’s backline damage dealers. Chen should deal low amounts of burst damage while continually applying sustained damage at pointed targets. Chen should be extremely resilient in the absence of enemy stuns. As always, we are listening to your feedback and appreciate everyone taking the time to send it to us. Enjoy the new Talent Tree, and as Chen has said many times before- “It is important to master the Brew and not let it master you!”

We’ve streamlined that power, and have given him more options to play up the bard aspect of his kit, which should make him more of a team player.

    General

    • Fixed an issue that prevented players from placing Healing Totems near destructible objects and unpathable terrain.

    Heroes, Abilities, and Talents

    • Abathur: Fixed an issue causing Abathur’s Ultimate Evolution clones to deal damage to nearby enemies on expiration without learning the Volatile Mutation talent.
    • Anub’arak: It is no longer possible to cast Cocoon on Heroic Vehicles, such as the Garden Terror or Dragon Knight.
    • Auriel and Lunara: Fixed an issue causing Lunara’s camera to behave strangely after being resurrected by Auriel’s Resurrect.
    • Diablo: It is no longer possible to cast Overpower on Heroic Vehicles, such as the Garden Terror or Dragon Knight.
    • Nova: It is no longer possible for Nova to target Invulnerable Heroes with Triple Tap.

    User Interface

    • Greymane: Fixed an issue causing Greymane’s “Eager Wolf” talent to fail to display in the shop when viewing talents for Greymane’s Worgen form.

    Another notable change is the first ever price increase: Muradin's gold price has been increased to 4,000 gold and $6.49 USD. To compensate, Diablo's prices have been reduced to 2,000 Gold and $3.49 respectively. Spyrian talked a bit about this change on Reddit:

    While we will be increasing Muradin's price a bit once the patch hits the live game next week, it's worth mentioning that we're also reducing Diablo's price from 7k to 2k so that we still have 2 warriors at that level.

    We've done a couple of price increases in the past, though that was quite a while ago (during Tech Alpha, if memory serves). We've also given a bit of advanced notice so that you still have a little over a week to drum up the 2,000 gold needed to buy Muradin if you don't have him already.

    We're not increasing the price on the Starter Bundle. It'll have a slightly higher overall discount amount because Muradin's base price is increasing, but we plan to keep the bundle's price the same. (source)

    Spyrian acknowledges the price increase for Muradin, but doesn't say why.  I mean I know its their product and they can dictate what they do with it, but I'm curious why they are suddenly increasing his price.  TBH it doesn't effect me as I already own him, but I just don't see what changed all of a sudden.  Anyone here know why Blizz decided this?

    Perhaps due to heroes changing in difficulty or value to a team? Not sure though.

        Kel'thuzad is hitting PTR next week and Chromie, Jaina, Leoric & Morales are receiving reworks. Find out more about all Hero changes spotted by the community so far.
        An in-development video will be published Wednesday (August 23).
        Redditor ToastieNL compiled a list of all changes over at /r/heroesofthestorm. You can check the full article here. We'll be focusing on Hero changes in this article and report on new skins/sprays/announcers after the in-development video is live tomorrow.
        Obey the Call Event
        Kel'thuzad's patch brings new skins, bundles, sprays, announcers and event quests to the Nexus. All data was obtained from community contribution at /r/heroesofthestorm. Some changes may be innacurate and we'll have to wait until next week for full patch notes.
        New Skins
        Death Knight Sonya Dreadlord Jaina Crypt Queen Zagara Hero Changes
        The following Heroes will receive updates in next week's PTR patch. 
        Chromie
        Sand Blast damage decreased. It's now a baseline quest. Every successful hit +5 damage permanently and at 80 hits, Past and Future Me activates. Chromie has a hits counter with how many Q's you hit in a row. On two consecutive hits, Q deals double the damage, on 3 the damage is tripled. Talent Changes
        Compounding Aether (Level 1 Talent) removed and replaced with a talent that makes Q deal triple bonus damage when you hit an enemy three times in a row. Piercing Sands (Level 4 Talent) removed. New talent: When Time Trap is activated, the cooldowns of Sand Blast and Dragon's Breath is reset. Reaching through Time (Level 13 Talent) removed. There's a new spell allowing you to swap locations with a Sand Clone (Q baseline quest). Apparently, you can use your Hearthstone, teleport back to the base, replenish your Health/Mana & teleport back. Past and Future Me (Level 20 Talent) became a baseline Q quest and got replaced with Piercing Sands. It pierces through all enemies, but there are no quest procs for multiple hits.         Jaina
        Blizzard cooldown reduced to 14 sec. Ice Block is now baseline and you will gain it pon dealing 15,000 Critical Damage (Trait). It's on a 40 second cooldown. Talents
        Level 1
        Deep Chill (Level 1 Talent) removed. There's a new quest called Fingers of Frost that increases Mana regeneration per globe, capping at 20, when it increases damage bonus of her trait by 10%. Level 7
        Frostbitten (Level 7 Talent) removed. Replaced with Icefury Wand: Auto attacks deal 75% bonus damage to Chilled targets. Every auto attack reduces Blizzard's cooldown by 1 sec. Level 10
        Summon Water Elemental (Level 10 Heroic Ability): Cooldown decreased to 60 sec (down from 80 sec), Mana cost decreased from 75 to 60. Level 20
        Bolt of the Storm: Ice Blink & AoE Chill application. Deep Chill: Slow stacks. Ring of Frost (upgrade): reduces its cooldown by 10 sec per Hero hit in the center. Leoric
        Skeletal Swing (Q) cooldown increased to 14 seconds. has 7 sec. cooldown and 50% Mana refunded when hitting a Hero. Drain Hope (W) baseline healing down to 20% (from 25%). Every 1st / 2nd basic attack cleaves and the 3rd hits for double damage. Talent Changes
        Level 1
        Consume Vitality:  Drain Hope's cooldown reduced by 2 sec. Heal for 4% maximum Health per enemy hit with Skeletal Swing). Fealty Unto Death: Gain Health / Mana when minions die. Ossein Renewal: Heal 20% maximum Health over 4 sec. Level 4
        Ghastly Reach: Increases the range of Skeletal Swing. Paralyzing Rage: Increases the Slow of Skeletal Swing. Kneel, Peasants: Increases the damage of Skeletal Swing by 75% against PvE. Level 7
        Willing Vessel: Increases healing of Drain Hope by 5% and an additional 5% when you finish a full cast. Drain Momentum: Gain 30% Movement Speed for 4 seconds upon completion. Hopelessness: Drain Hope's range increased. Level 10
        Entomb: Cooldown increased to 70 sec. (down from 50 sec.). March of the Black King: Damage per swing increased to 548 from 400 (at Level 20). Healing increased to 12% of maximum Health (up from 7%). Level 13
        Unyielding Despair: Reduces the cooldown of Drain Hope. Hardened Bones: Gain Armor during and 3 sec. after Drain Hope. Ominous Wrath: Increases the duration of Wraith Walk by 100%. Wraith Walk through enemies to reduce their damage by 50% for 4 sec. Level 16
        Royal Focus: Your next Skeletal Swing deals 50% increaed. damage. Hitting Heroes reduces cooldown of Wraith Walk by 7 sec. Crushing Hope: Deal damage equal to 15% of an enemy's maximum Health when Drain Hope is cast for its full duration. Does not heal. Mithril Mace: Increases Attack Speed by 20% + 3% per 10 minion kills or 1 Hero kill, capping at 50% total. Level 20
        Burning Despair: Deals 175% damage of Burning Rage. AoE and damage is doubled when Drain Hope is active. Spectral Leech: Deals damage equal to 2.5 % of Leoric's maximum Health and heals Leoric for double. Heroes caught in Entomb are now silenced. Hardened Shield removed, replaced with Shroud of the Dead King: Activate to gain Protected for 3 sec. (75 sec. cooldown).         Lt. Morales
        Mana removed, replaced with Energy. 3 seconds after not using Healing Beam, Morales will regenerate 6 Energy every 1 sec. Using Healing Beam depletes 6 Energy every 1 sec. Trait updated: Caduceus Reactor now restores 2% maximum health every 1 sec. when channeling Healing Beam. Safeguard & Displacement Grenade are now CD-based. Talent Changes
        Level 1
        Life Support: Gain 2 Energy (20 cap) each time Safeguard reduces damage. Caduceus Feedback: Auto attacks generate 1 Energy (4 Energy against Heroes). Level 7
        Cleanse removed. Replaced with Vanadium Plating: Gain +25 Armor on Caduceus Reactor and the duration of Caduceus Reactor is extended when Stunned. Physical Therapy: Safeguard removes all Slow effects from the target. If Safeguard removes a Slow from the target, the cooldown of Safeguard is decreased by 4 sec. Level 13
        Second Opinion: Cooldown of Displacement Grenade is reduced to 1 sec if it hits at least 2 Heroes. EMP Grenade: Deals damage to Shields and additional damage over 2 seconds. Level 16
        Extended Care: Healing Beam range increased by 40%. First Responder: Healing Beam healing is increased by 25% if Morales is above 70 Energy. Shield Sequencer: Safeguard gains an additional charge. Level 20
        Caduceus Reactor (Trait upgrade): Healing increased from 2% to 6% of maximum Health. Medivac Dropship (upgrades): Become Protected 2 seconds after exiting Medivac.         Redditor Homicidal_HotS spotted differences between the live version of Blizzard's website and the current patch and he shared his findings.

        Bursting Light (Level 7 Talent removed). Detainment Strike damage was reduced when it does not stun an enemy and increased when it does. Hope regeneration from hero damage was increased to 50% damage dealt (up from 40%). Butcher
        Meat gained from Hero kills was reduced to 20 (down from 25). Meat lost upon death was increased to 15 (up from 10). Garrosh
        Warlord's Challenge (Heroic ability) taunt increased to 2 sec. (up from 1.5 sec.). Lucio
        Passive Crossfade healing increased from 16 to 25 Health per sec. Uther

        Kel'thuzad, Archlich of Naxxramas was revealed as the next Hero to enter the Nexus.
        Check out the latest Gamescom 2017 Hero reveal in our Kel'thuzad preview.
        It started with Hero leaks from reddit, where a user wrote that Kel'thuzad would be coming soon and he was right! Blizzard started releasing various Naxxramas teasers that culminated in the Hero reveal. The animated trailer titled "Obey the Call" mentions "Call of Kel'thuzad". If that's the name of a Warcraft Event, we'll get new skins, bundles - and hopefully - a Warcraft-themed map. Kel'thuzad is a Hero from the Warcraft Universe and in Heroes of the Storm, he will be fulfilling the role of an Assassin.
        All shall feel the touch of despair as the darkest secrets of the Nexus are revealed... Drawn to the immeasurable power found within the Nexus, Kel’thuzad, Archlich of Naxxramas, has turned several of the noblest Heroes against their allies, and he will not stop until all become minions of the cold dark!         Death and Decay [Q]
        After 0.5 seconds, launch an orb that explodes upon hitting an enemy, dealing 150 damage to enemies in the area. The explosion leaves behind a pool of decay that lasts 2 seconds, dealing 70 damage every 0.5 seconds to enemies.
        Frost Nova [W]
        Create a nova that explodes after 1 second, dealing 212 damage to enemies inside and Slowing them by 35% for 2.5 seconds. Enemies in the center are Rooted for 1 second.
        Chains of Kel'thuzad [E]
        Launch a chain, dealing 97 damage to the first enemy Hero or Structure hit. For 4 seconds after hitting an enemy, Chains can be reactivated to launch to an additional enemy, pulling both enemies together and Stunning them for 0.5 seconds.
        Heroic Abilities
        Frost Blast [R1]
        Launch a meteor of ice at an enemy Hero. Upon impact, the meteor deals 100 damage to its target and 275 damage to enemies in the area. All enemies hit by Frozen Tomb are Rooted for 1.5 seconds.
        Shadow Fissure [R2]
        Create a fissure anywhere on the Battleground that explodes after 1.5 seconds, dealing 440 damage to enemy Heroes in its area.

        Blizzard issued a new round of account suspensions for non-participation - that's going AFK, intentionally dying and refusing to help the team.
        Such behavior is all but helpful and players that ruin gameplay experience for everybody will not remain unpunished.

        We’ve issued a new round of account suspensions and bans for players who regularly go AFK, refuse to participate, or intentionally and repeatedly die during their Heroes of the Storm matches. 

        These actions were targeted at players whose in-game performance data, combined with high report volume, clearly shows a consistent lack of contribution to the majority of their matches. In this way, we’re able to take regular and confident action against those who are intentionally harming the in-game experience for others.

        Going AFK, refusing to participate, and intentionally dying are behaviors that ruin the experience for everyone else in a match and undermine the spirit of competition that’s essential to Heroes of the Storm. Taking part in these actions will not be tolerated, and we will continue to suspend and ban players who do. We’d like to thank those of you who use the relevant in-game reporting options when you spot these negative behaviors in your matches, and encourage you to continue doing so.
