Tavern Brawl: A Friendly Game of Chess

You thought you were playing a card game? In this week's Tavern Brawl, you get to play chess!

This new Tavern Brawl works exactly like the Chess boss from the recent One Night in Karazhan adventure. Both players start with only 10 health, one being the Black King, the other the White King. You get cards with your pawns, but you cannot attack with them; they will automatically attack at the end of each turn.

Needless to say, positioning is key in this Tavern Brawl. Your mulligan is also extremely important: you should make sure that you have a lot of early game cards, otherwise you might as well concede if you see that you are falling behind fast. Do check our guide on the Chess encounter, as it works similarly.

A Friendly Game of Chess is the 69th Tavern Brawl.

I really like this brawl. We all knew it was coming when it showed up in Kara, but that doesn't make it any less fun!

Is this real? A brawl where the only RNG is draw and rest is completely skill based? I LOVE this brawl, it's simply wonderful. Additionally, players that have not completed Heroic Chess will be able to practice and gain gold at the same time.

It feels like Black (going second) has a massive advantage in this Chess brawl.

I dont think I will be playing this again after I finish my 5 wins tavern brawl quest

It's OK, we'll get four weeks of Randamonium to compensate.

Same here. Having one hell of a blast. It also makes you realise how braindead the average HS player is, but yeah...

We all know that they're just rolling a really big pair of dice to decide which brawl to have. Every face has Randomonium.

Being the black king is so OP

There's actually belief that you shouldn't play anything on turn 1 as white to counter the black advantage.

Idk, I went 5-1 while doing yesterday's daily, with 100% White King on my side. The only loss I've ever had in this Brawl was because of brilliant Neverlucky mulligan, where I, of course, have not seen a single Pawn until turn 3. Thank you, shuffler.

Didn't feel like Black was really OP. Just used my brain better and it worked out, time and again.

Dave Kosak introduces us to the Monster Hunt, which will be available in a week.
The Lead Mission Designer was joined by two of his associates to discuss the newest PvE mode, which will come along with The Witchwood. Paul Nguyen talked about the four heroes. Tess Greymane has a Hero Power that lets her Discover any class card that has been played in a game (by both players) and add it to your hand.
Darius Crowley has an indestructible cannon minion that can be activated via Darius' Hero Power and fire at the minions across it. Positioning will matter, as you can kill two enemy minions at once and the Hero Power will refresh each time you kill a minion with your cannon. There weren't any details on Houndmaster Shaw or Toki, Time-Tinker, but it was hinted that the former hero will have something to do with Rush (just like its card counterpart).
Giovanni Scarpati discussed bosses and treasures. The Monster Hunt will feature over 45 unique boss encounters. As Ben Brode had revealed in an earlier interview, each hero will have its own final boss, called "nemesis fight". For Crowley it's Lord Godfrey, for Shaw it's Glinda Crowskin and for Toki it's her own future self! When you clear the Monster Hunt with all four heroes (and win four packs), you get to face Hagatha as the last boss. Ultimately, as far as the treasures are concerned, there are a few returning ones from the Dungeon Run, but most are new. There are also hero exclusive treasures, as well as unique treasures "dropping" from rare boss encounters.
You should definitely watch the video to get a glimpse of all the new stuff coming with the Monster Hunt. And don't forget: it's release date is April 26 at 10:00 am PDT!

      Ready for Action
If you played the Dungeon Run in Kobolds & Catacombs, the Monster Hunt will be eerily familiar—but much is different! Rather than choosing one of Hearthstone’s nine classes, you’ll take on the role of one of four veteran monster hunters, each with a special ability that you’ll need to make the most of if you hope to survive the hunt.
Your hunter will venture deep into the Witchwood on Hagatha’s trail, defeating a series of monstrous bosses who dare to cross your path. With each victory, you’ll build a stronger and stronger deck with the items you find. You may encounter some trusty old equipment out in the forest, but much of what you’ll find will be entirely new, including treasures unique to certain foes. Each monster hunter has their own favorite tricks—a special hero power or ability that you’ll need to master if you hope to survive the hunt. Each hunter also carries a grudge against a heinous nemesis in the woods: a unique boss that only they can track down to fight.

You’ll want to go on a Monster Hunt with every hunter, because each offers a quest that will earn you a Witchwood card pack. And if you’ve got the mettle to complete the Monster Hunt with all four hunters, you’ll finally have a chance to face off with the real witch in the woods: Hagatha! If you can free the wood from Hagatha’s curse, you’ll earn the gratitude of Gilneas and the Monster Hunter card back!

We hope you enjoyed learning more of what lurks ahead in Monster Hunt! We’re eager to hear your tales of The Witchwood on social media using the #Witchwood hashtag. Learn more about The Witchwood at TheWitchwood.com!
We’ll see you on the hunt!
