Lead Hero Designer Interview

Some fansites got the chance to interview Lead Hero Designer Kent-Erik Hagman, who talked about Hero Design and hinted at possible Cho'gall balance changes.

Here's a recap of the interview.

Samuro

Hagman really likes Samuro as he feels he's in the right place in terms of balance, incredibly fun to play and brings a lot of nostalgia.

Hero Concepts

  • We should expect unusual Hero concepts in the future (The Lost Vikings) as Blizzard isn't done with them yet.
    • They can't share any details on unusual concepts that didn't make it live, because it's normal that these may see the light of the day in the future.

The Lost Vikings

  • The Lost Vikings still get a high-level of play on certain maps and are often banned in professional levels of play.
  • The team is alright with The Lost Vikings being a low winrate hero at lower levels of play, because at higher levels they can dominate games.

Cho'gall

  • Changes are in store for Cho'gall that in a light way affect games at a systematic level.
    • Cho'gall will be the Hero who will shine only on certain maps due to the single body.

Sylvanas

  • Has been a thorn in the side of Battleground designers, because of her pushing (tower destroying) capabilities.

Hero Design

  • The team doesn't focus on university parity when it comes down to designing Heroes.
    • As Warcraft is and will be one of the most popular universes, it's perfectly fine to have more Heroes from the Warcraft universe.
    • The Sanctuary and Korpulu sector won't be neglected as there are still tons of Heroes to be added.
  • While designing skins such as Widowmaker/Novazon Nova, the team is unlikely to introduce Widowmaker from Overwatch or Amazon from Diablo II as future Heroes.
    • The team always discusses potential of future Hero additions when creating skins for existing characters inspired by another Hero that hasn't been yet added to the Nexus.
  • Every single Hero is designed with the intent to bring its own special snowflake. There are also some tools an archetype needs to bring, so it's a combination of the both.
  • The team is alright with certain Heroes being better on specific maps as they continuously add new Heroes to the game.
    • E.g. Picking a high throughput single-target DPS, like Greymane or the Butcher for fighting the Immortal.
