overwatch New Overwatch PTR Patch With Balance and XP Gain Changes

1 post in this topic

FU9K2GUPPMTK1477004332667.jpg

The team is trying quite a few new improvements and balance changes in this massive PTR patch and they need your feedback!

This PTR patch is different compared to the previous ones in the history of Overwatch. First of all, a big focus of this PTR will be to thoroughly test a variety of data-optimization improvements. The underlying changes will help the team introduce new content more efficiently, as well decrease the downtime players experience when loading maps.

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a new XP system. In short, the XP grind no longer resets once you hit a promotion. The amount of XP required to level up now remains consistently at 20K XP after your first promotion. Here are the patch notes, along with several bug fixes:

Blizzard LogoBlizzard Entertainment

GENERAL UPDATES

General

  • Made several adjustments to the amount of experience needed to level
    • The amount of experience needed to reach each level between 1 and 13 remains unchanged
    • The amount of experience needed to reach each level between 14 and 100 has been slightly reduced
    • The amount of experience needed to reach each level after 100 is now constant (20k EXP) and will no longer reset with each promotion

Developer Comments: With the way our experience curve works right now, players can move quickly through the first 23 levels of each promotional tier (1-23, 101-123, 201-223, etc). This is because when a player is promoted every 100 levels, the experience curve essentially resets. While this reset has worked pretty well so far, it’s also encouraged some people to stop playing the game altogether once they’re promoted—the goal of this being to save those first 23 levels specifically for seasonal events. To help address this, the experience needed for all post-promotion levels (i.e. any level after 100) is now a consistent 20k and will no longer reset. The total experience required to gain 100 levels after a promotion is roughly unchanged, however. In addition, the total experience required to earn your first 100 levels (before your first promotion) has been slightly reduced.

HERO BALANCE CHANGES

We’re making a number of significant hero adjustments this patch and will also be experimenting with different balance tweaks throughout the duration of the PTR.

If you’d like an up-to-date rundown of these changes as they’re implemented, click here. We’re going to be iterating on hero balance quite frequently over the next few weeks, and we’ll be sure to share the latest information as the PTR progresses.

BUG FIXES

General

  • Fixed an issue that sometimes prevented the PC Client from closing properly, subsequently making the Battle.net application think the game was still running
  • Fixed a bug preventing players from receiving credit toward the Most Healing Done commendation
  • Fixed a bug preventing the fourth column on the friends list from being displayed properly

AI

  • Fixed a bug that caused the McCree bot to Combat Roll into the well on Ilios

Competitive Play

  • Fixed a bug that could cause overtime to continue indefinitely on Assault maps
  • Fixed a bug that could cause matches to begin with only 11 connected players

Heroes

  • Fixed a bug that prevented Ana’s healing stats from showing up in the Career Profile page
  • Fixed a bug causing irregular placement of the pumpkin on Genji’s “Pumpkin Carving” Highlight intro when certain skins were equipped
  • Fixed a bug preventing Mercy’s staff from showing up in the “Guardian Angel” highlight intro when her Cobalt skin was equipped
  • Fixed a bug preventing Reaper’s “R.I.P.” victory pose from animating correctly when the game client isn’t in focus
  • Fixed a bug preventing some of Tracer’s voice lines from activating when her Punk skin is equipped

Maps

  • Fixed a bug on Watchpoint: Gibraltar that allowed players to reach an unintended perch near the final objective

Secondly, quite a few experimental hero balance changes have been introduced. We used the term "experimental" here, since Geoff Goodman clarified that some of these changes may not make it to live servers. This will depend on player feedback and the conclusions the team reaches after the testing cycle is complete. Moreover, this PTR will last longer than usual. You can read his statement in the spoiler tag below:

Hey guys,

I wanted to drop in and talk about our upcoming PTR patch that is due out very soon. We are going to try something a little different this time, so you might be surprised when you see the patch notes for it.

Previously we've been using the PTR, first and foremost, to make sure the game is solid and there aren't any heinous issues that would prevent us from releasing the patch. There was a nice secondary goal of gathering feedback on any changes we're planning and trying to iterate on them quickly, but we didn't always have time to try multiple different iterations of any particular change.

This time around, the PTR is likely to be around a bit longer than before, so we're taking this opportunity to try out some more significant hero changes, and the push more significant iterations throughout this PTR cycle.

The PTR patch changes you guys see are unlikely to make it through PTR unchanged, unlike previous PTR cycles.

We want to try a bunch of things and see whats fun and working, and iterate more quickly from there. In this way, we get to have you guys involved earlier in the process.

One quick note, since I already know this will come up. There aren't any Symmetra changes for this patch. Her changes ended up being much more significant and require more time to finish up, but shes feeling pretty great internally so hopefully we can get her out there pretty soon.

I don't have an exact ETA on when this PTR will update, but we're hoping for later this week some time. As always, the more you guys jump on and give feedback the better the game will be! Thanks.

(source)

Unfortunately, as Geoff stated, this PTR doesn't contain the long awaited Symmetra changes/rework. The heroes that have been targeted this time are D.Va, Soldier: 76, Ana, Mei, Lúcio, Zarya and Torbjörn. Here are the complete balance changes:

Blizzard LogoJosh Engen

Hero Balance Changes

General
  • Dealing damage to non-players (like like Torbjorn's turrets or Symmetra's teleporter), no longer charges ultimate abilities
  • Ultimate costs have been increased by 25% for all heroes

D. Va

  • Mech health increased to 200 (formerly 100). Armor remains at 400
  • Movement speed while firing has been increased by 25%

Soldier: 76

  • Pulse Rifle
    • Bullet damage increased from 17 to 20
    • Maximum bullet spread Increased from 2.2 to 2.4

Ana

  • Nano Boost
    • No longer increases move speed

Mei

  • Blizzard
    • Ultimate cost has been increased by 15%

Lúcio

  • Amp It Up
    • Healing-per-second has been decreased by 10%

Zarya

  • Particle Barrier
    • Power gained from barriers decreased by 20%
  • Projected Barrier
    • Power gained from barriers decreased by 20%

Torbjörn

  • Scrap is now automatically generated over time
  • The amount of scrap collected from a fallen enemy has been decreased by 40%
  • Forge Hammer
    • Swing speed increased by 25%
    • Damage decreased by 27%
(source)

Lastly, Jeff Kaplan answered a player's question on the official forums as to if some heroes will still be considered the worst or "troll picks" after the current balance update. Jeff claimed that the team is doing its best to keep all heroes viable and to maintain a healthy hero balance. He mentioned Symmetra and Torbjörn specifically, and affirmed that the team is looking at ways to make them more fun. They stilld don't want to make changes that are too drastic, because this can be disruptive for a certain percentage of the playerbase.

[...]My question is: Will the current effort toward hero balance will completely erase or dissipate those "troll" pick?[...]

Since the release of Overwatch in may 2016, we've seen a lot of changes concerning heroes balances.
Since Overwatch has become very popular, a lot of pro player find new meta each months.
Because of the evolving metagame, which pretty much dictate all heroe pick in the competitive format, not all heroes are regarded as equal.
Heck, some heroes pick are considered "troll", like Symmetra and Torbjorn.
Thoses heroes flagged as 'useless' are not healthy for anyone.

My question is: Will the current effort toward hero balance will completely erase or dissipate those "troll" pick?

I like all heroes. I understand some perform better than other. But no heroes deserve to be so underwhelming that no one wants to see them ever.

It's never our intention to have a hero be perceived as a "troll pick", but that will inevitably happen sometimes. Let's say that we all agreed that all of the heroes were perfectly balanced (just pretend with me), even if we touched nothing, eventually the balance would shift over time due to evolving playstyles, strategies and meta-trends. A lot of us like pro sports and tend to think of those games (soccer, football, hockey, basketball) as "timeless". But if you follow those games closely, the leagues have had to make minor tweaks to the games to keep them fun and balanced over time. It's a weird analogy, but it is very similar to hero balance in a game like Overwatch. In those pro sports, players and coaches evolved their ways of thinking about the game that required the game itself to change at times.

We will absolutely do our best to make sure all of our heroes our viable. With so many heroes, I do believe the playerbase will (at times) decide that certain heroes are out of fashion and therefore deem them as "troll picks". Sometimes this will be very valid. And sometimes it will be perception.

Both Torb and Symmetra are being looked at right now. We want to try to improve them in ways that makes them more fun to play, more enjoyable to have on your team and try to make sure they are not infuriating to play against.

We wrestle with the issue that players get very upset at us when they perceive "the meta is stale" and certain heroes are not viable. Yet it's also very disruptive to the playerbase for us to make changes. It's a bit of a Catch-22 but we do our best to responsibly look at all heroes all the time and make sure nothing is terribly unbalanced or worse, un-fun. (source)

Wildcard24 makes some great WoW-themed skins for OW, as well as some SC and Diablo ones! As usual Rein and Reaper win.

As you can see from the image above, wildcard24 really knocked it out of the park on these skins, making us yearn for some Blizzard-game themed events to come to Overwatch so we can see something like them. And there's a special one for everyone's favorite in WoW/maybe not so favorite in OW - Leeroy Genji:

He even got the usual pattern of official event skin priority right: Reinhardt must have the very best one, and then the rest can be whatever, with one or two standouts (in this instance Pharah and Junkrat). He also made some options for other Blizz games:
      Starcraft:

      Diablo:

Seriously, look at that Reaper and Zarya! We need to get this Blizzard-games event thing happening right away! Definitely check out the rest of wildcard24's art here.

A new PTR is underway and the previously announced big Bastion changes are there, but it also brings a lot of other Hero additions, most notably to Merc's ressurection and the server browser! A lot of  abilities also get the option to tune their individual targeting sensitivity.
      February 7 (source)
      PATCH HIGHLIGHTS
      New Feature: Server Browser
Starting today, every player can create their own, unique Overwatch experience and share it with their friends, their teammates, or the entire world. Introducing the Server Browser.
An extension of Overwatch's Custom Game mode, the Server Browser allows you to adjust the settings on various maps, modes, and heroes, creating your own tailor-made server. If, for example, you want to increase Pharah’s missile speed or remove the cooldown from McCree's Combat Roll, the power is yours. Once you're happy with your settings and you're ready to launch your game, you'll need to set up the permissions. You can limit the number of people who can join your game by toggling the "Friends Only" or "Invite Only" options, but if you want to put your strange creation to the real test, set your server to "Public" and click the launch button.
The Server Browser is currently being tested, so we'll be making changes throughout the PTR. Thank you for helping us test the feature, and we're excited to see what you make of it.
      New Mode: Capture the Flag
Capture the Rooster has been, without a doubt, Overwatch’s most popular brawl. We don’t want that excitement to end, so we’re bringing Capture the Flag to the Arcade as an ongoing game mode. Starting today, we’re adding Capture-the-Flag versions of Nepal, Lijiang Tower, Ilios, and Oasis, which gives you 12 maps to try when creating a Custom Game.
      HERO UPDATES
      Ana
New Hero Option: Nano Boost Sensitivity Allows players to adjust Nano Boost’s targeting sensitivity Bastion
Configuration: Sentry Deploy time decreased from 1.5 seconds to 1.0 second Bullet spread increased by 50 percent Bullet spread is always at maximum (it no longer increases as the weapon is fired) Magazine size increased from 200 to 300 Headshot damage multiplier has been removed No longer deals critical damage Configuration: Recon Bullet spread decreased by 25 percent Magazine size increased from 20 to 25 Self-Repair Can now be used while moving Now bound to secondary fire (formerly Ability 2) No longer interrupted by taking damage A new resource meter has been added that deplete while Self-Repair is active and recharges when not in use Configuration: Tank No longer grants bonus armor Bastion has a new passive: Ironclad Bastion takes 35% less damage while in Sentry or Tank configuration Developer Comments: The goal of these changes is to move some of Bastion's power from Configuration: Sentry to Recon, while keeping its sentry mode a strong option, especially versus tanks and barriers. Overall, Bastion should feel stronger and more flexible with these changes.
      D.Va
Defense Matrix Projectiles (like Roadhog’s Chain Hook or Tracer’s Pulse Bomb) no longer need to travel a minimum distance before they can be blocked Developer Comments: Previously, there was a minimum distance a projectile had to travel before it could be destroyed by Defense Matrix. This made it nearly worthless in situations where an enemy was right next to your teammate, such as when Roadhog hooks your ally. This change removes that restriction so Defense Matrix should now reliably destroy projectiles regardless of how far they have traveled.
      Mei
Cryo-Freeze Mei can now be targeted by allies while in Cryo-Freeze Mercy
Resurrect While performing a resurrection, Mercy now becomes temporarily invulnerable along with the allies being revived Caduceus Staff Zenyatta can no longer be targeted when Transcendence is active New Hero Option: Guardian Angel Sensitivity Allows players to adjust Guardian Angel’s targeting sensitivity New Hero Option: Beam Sensitivity Allows players to adjust targeting sensitivity on Mercy’s Caduceus Staff beams Developer Comments: Mercy’s Resurrect has always been very powerful, but it often forces her to sacrifice herself to use it well. There have been changes in the past that attempted to help her in this area, but haven’t done enough to solve it. This change means that once she uses the ability, she will always survive long enough to be with her team again.
      Sombra
New Hero Option: Hack Sensitivity Allows players to adjust the targeting sensitivity on Sombra’s Hack ability Torbjörn
Rivet Gun Ammo is now loaded earlier in the reload animation Widowmaker
New Hero Option: Grappling Hook Sensitivity Allows players to adjust Grappling Hook’s targeting sensitivity Zarya
New Hero Option: Projected Barrier Sensitivity Allows players to adjust Projected Barrier’s targeting sensitivity Zenyatta
New Hero Option: Harmony Orb Sensitivity Allows players to adjust Harmony Orb’s targeting sensitivity New Hero Option: Discord Orb Sensitivity Allows players to adjust Discord Orb’s targeting sensitivity MAP BALANCE CHANGES
      Eichenwalde
A second gate no longer closes after the payload passes through the castle doors. Instead, rubble from the damaged doorway partially blocks the entrance. Developer Comments: Once the offensive team gets through the castle entrance, the map becomes very heavily stacked in the defense’s favor. This change will give the offense more entrance options, which should improve the map’s overall balance.
      BUG FIXES
      General
Fixed an issue preventing key bindings on the communication wheel from displaying properly Fixed a bug causing some key bindings to revert to default after the first round of a Control map Fixed a bug that allowed commendation cards to be recalculated and transferred to a new player after the previous recipient left at the end of a round Fixed a bug that caused the “experience gained” audio effects to continue playing, even after the players left the game lobby Environmental damage to barriers no longer counts toward the "Damage Blocked" statistic Competitive Play
Fixed a bug preventing “60 seconds remaining” and “30 seconds remaining” voice lines from playing during the second round of a match Heroes
Fixed a bug preventing Lucio’s “Sound Barriers Provided” statistic from being properly calculated Fixed a bug preventing Reinhardt’s shield from displaying cracks at low health with the Wujing skin equipped Fixed a bug that allowed Roadhog to turn freely while pulling a hooked target Fixed an issue that allowed Sombra’s Translocator to become stuck in the air Fixed a bug preventing Tracer’s ”Clock’s Tickin’’ spray from matching the thumbnail in the Hero Gallery Maps
Torbjörn can now construct turrets on the stairs in Oasis Fixed an issue that caused Highlight Intros to clip into the roof of a building on Lijang Tower

Bastion to get a bit of an overhaul, aiming to make him more mobile and tough at the same time.

It seems everyone's favorite out-of-game, least favorite in-game Hero is getting a bit of a revamp. Bastion has been considered both OP, no-skill and completely useless at the same time, but he is rarely used in top-end team comps in tournaments. Meanwhile, as a character in the Overwatch universe, he's won everyone's hearts and circuit boards, mainly with this:
Lead designer Geoff Goodman took to the forums to respond to the "Can the developers address Bastion?" thread and explained some complex changes that will be coming to the Hero on the PTR soon. The changes try to make him a bit more tough and mobile, making his self-repair a key part of the playstyle.
      Geoff Goodman (source)
Here are some high level stuff we're likely to have testable in the next PTR:
Recon Mode - Lowered spread and increased magazine size, to help with general viability in this mode.
Sentry Mode - We're looking at focusing this mode into more of a tank-buster and barrier-buster mode, while also making it feel less suicidal to be transformed. To that end we're testing stuff like increased spread and removing headshots, but taking less damage while transformed.
Self-Repair - We've been testing a few big changes to this that are feeling really good so far. Currently our internal build has Bastion able to use Self-Repair while moving and also having it no longer interrupted when taking damage. To balance that out it is now on a resource system (similar to the route D.Va's defense matrix went). These changes have turned this ability from a more niche rarely used ability, to a much more powerful and core survivability tool.
We're still testing and tweaking things with Bastion but we'll hopefully have a PTR build coming fairly soon so you guys can try it out!

Today's new event came with patch notes as well, covering more than just the new skins and game mode: the much discussed PTR changes to Ana, Roadhog's hook and Sombra's Hack are in, as well as Lucio's backwards wall-riding. There are some more standard patch-y things in three as well, like crouch having a small cooldown, communication wheel improvements, and a whole bunch of bug fixes.

      General
The “Stay as Team” button now lights up when anyone on your team clicks it Players can now join Team Chat from the Hero Select screen (Push “RB” on the Xbox One controller and push “R1” on the PlayStation 4 controller) Crouch now has a very small cooldown between uses

      Kill Feed
Hero ability icons are now displayed in the Kill Feed Headshot eliminations are now indicated with a red icon
      HERO BALANCE UPDATES
      Ana
Biotic Grenade Effect duration has been reduced from 5 seconds to 4 seconds Healing boost on allies has been decreased by 50% Developer Comments: The healing boost from Ana’s Biotic Grenade was providing too much healing, especially when used on targets with large health pools.
      D.Va
Health increased from 200 to 400 Armor decreased from 400 to 200 Fusion Cannons Bullet damage decreased from 3 to 2 Number of bullets per shot has been increased from 8 to 11 Developer Comments: D.Va’s armor often made her feel like she had no weaknesses, even against heroes that are typically effective against bigger targets (like Reaper). The changes to her primary fire will result in a small overall decrease in damage, but her Fusion Cannons should feel more consistent now.
      Lúcio
New Hero Option: Allow Backwards Wall Ride When enabled, allows Lucio to start wall riding while moving backwards.
      Roadhog
Chain Hook Targets are now pulled directly in front of Roadhog (rather than straight to him), except in cases where Roadhog drastically rotates Hooked targets are now released if they leave Roadhog’s line of sight before being pulled Line of sight checks (which determines if targets are hit by the hook) are now done from Roadhog’s position, rather than the hook’s position Developer Comments: The hook should now feel more consistent for Roadhog players, but it should also feel more reasonable to his enemies, as they cannot be hooked or pulled around corners anymore.
      Sombra
Hack Cooldown has been reduced from 12 seconds to 8 seconds Time it takes to hack a target has been decreased from 1 second to 0.8 seconds Developer Comments: Sombra often had difficulty hacking enemies, even when she surprised the target. This change should help her execute hacks more easily.

It's here! The Year of the Rooster/Lunar/Chinese New Year begins and we get new skins and, more importantly, a Capture the flag game mode! It's a Brawl and Jeff Kaplan took time to explain it in detail in a new dev update video below. You can also check out the amazing "Winston's Journey to the West tapestry at the bottom of the post. We also have a gallery of all the skins on our facebook page.

Gather your family and friends, heroes, and get ready to ring in the Year of the Rooster!
Overwatch's Lunar New Year celebrations have begun and we hope this seasonal event brings you happiness, prosperity, and (most importantly) lots of fun. For the next three weeks, players will have the chance to collect over 100 commemorative cosmetic items, enjoy a firefight beneath some fireworks on Lijiang Tower, and work together to capture the flag in Overwatch's newest brawl mode.
Good Luck and Great Fortune Await
Starting today, our customaryLoot Boxes have been replaced with our lucky Lunar Loot Boxes—and they’re packed with one heck of a (primal) punch, including new skins like Palanquin D.Va and Wukong Winston!
As with previous events, Lunar Loot Boxes can be earned or purchased, and each will contain at least one item from our Year of the Rooster collection—including player icons, sprays, victory poses, emotes, highlight intros, skins, and more. While the contents of each seasonal Loot Box are random, you can unlock a variety of these customization options in the Hero Gallery for credits throughout the event’s duration.

Once you've unlocked an item, it will be yours forever, which means you can celebrate the Year of the Rooster all year-round. The collection will return to the vault on February 13, however, so be sure to fire up your favorite gaming machine and see what good fortune might await before it’s too late!
      Capture the Rooster
No event would be complete without a first-class brawl, and for the Year of the Rooster we took a cue from tradition and are introducing an Overwatch take on a true competitive gaming staple: Capture the Flag.
In Capture the Rooster, teams will face off on Lijiang Tower, attempting to secure the enemy flag while the opposing team does the same. In this fast-paced brawl, players will need to get creative with their team compositions as they attempt to construct a lineup that’s built for offensive speed and defensive stability.
      Let the Celebration Begin
We’ll also be ringing in the Lunar New Year over on our social media channels, so be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for some extra luck—and don't forget to keep an eye on playoverwatch.com to stay up to date with the latest game news!

Overwatch’s Year of the Rooster is live RIGHT NOW on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. We wish you every success this season and can’t wait to see you in-game!

To celebrate Lunar New Year, we're settling in for a bedtime story beloved by people around the world—and at least one imaginative young ape from the moon. Captured in a breathtaking tapestry illustrated by SHISHIO, Winston's Journey to the West recounts one of China's oldest and most revered pieces of literature through the eyes of everyone’s favorite gorilla scientist.
From a very young age, Winston showed limitless curiosity for the universe around him. But even though he was fascinated by the wonders of science, he also had a fondness for stories, particularly the tales that were passed down from generation to generation.
One day, on Lunar New Year, Dr. Harold Winston, the lunar colony researcher who cared deeply for the young ape's education and training, challenged him to read an epic story that was centuries old but beloved by billions. Journey to the West is a sweeping tale that soars between a mythological Earth and the glorious heavens, portraying demons, gods, and heroes clashing in mighty battles.
The gorilla's imagination was captured by the heroic monk Tang Sanzang and his ragtag group of disciples' quest for redemption… like the banished marshal Zhu Bajie, the old general Shā Wùjìng, and of course, the mischievous Monkey King, Sun Wukong.
Every Lunar New Year, Winston is reminded of his younger days. Growing up in the lunar colony had its trials, but it also had its treasures. Exploring this story with his mentor will always be one of his most cherished memories.
May happiness and prosperity find you in the Year of the Rooster!
