The developer update video goes into how Symmetra will be the first OW Hero to have 2 ultimates and also talks more changes coming to her on the PTR soon.

It's time for Game Director Jeff Kaplan to discuss the very long awaited Symmetra changes, coming to the PTR soon. He talks about how situational she currently is, the long amount of time she needs to set up and more.

But the headline is that she'll be the first OW Hero to have 2 ultimates to choose from at all times. You'll be able to toggle between the current teleporter and a shield generator that puts a substantial shield on all team mates in a large radius, ignoring line of sight. Check out the full video for a more in-depth description as well as other Symmterish topics:

Wanted to list all the changes and the points in the video where they're discussed, for those who don't want to watch the whole thing or don't need to sit through Kaplan explaining why Sym wasn't working.

2:26 - How Symmetra's new ultimate works, toggle between teleporter and shield generator by pressing Q.

3:40 - Teleporter has more health, some of that health is regenerating shield health.

4:30 - Symmetra's old shields replaced with a forward-moving barrier

6:02 - Changes to sentry turrets - maximum stockpiled charges increased to six, cooldown recovery rate reduced to 10 seconds.

7:25 - Her weapon is mostly the same, range of primary fire increased very slightly.

Coming to the PTR "very soon."

EDIT: They are up on the PTR now.

9:30 - Other information regarding the new map, Oasis.

EDIT:

Added a screenshot of what the photon barrier looks like to give an idea of its size. It moves forward on a path much like her current right-click.

Added a screenshot of the shield generator, providing shields to NPC allies without line-of-sight. It shields for 75 additional health.

So, does this mean people will stop hating me when I pick Symm? Bit tired of the "AFK, report" comments at the start of comp.

I really hope so. She's one of my favorite people to play but the restrictions of basically only being able to use her on D of a first point and only if your team can build a comp around her means that appropriate situations are few and far between.

Actually having a second ult that's compatible with defending a point B is a welcome change.

Definitely. I'm a huge fan of this rework and if you compare it to some of the other stuff that Blizzard does in their other games, I feel like this shows an actual understanding of the game and current meta. The rework makes her genuinely useful, rather than giving her a flashy kit that does nothing to change the problems.

Looks like season 3 is just going to be 76/D.Va/Symetra in every match.

Don't forget Mei!

Shame this won't stop the 2/2/2.

Towards the end of the season I was starting to see the 3 tank meta gain some steam. Every team had a Rein and a Zarya pretty much by default but with the D.Va buff I was seeing her take over the spot of some flankers.

I'm also curious if the rate of Zenyatta players will decrease proportionally to the increase of Symmetra. A lot of people are going to find themselves solo healing and Zen isn't the best in that role.

Yeah, this. The biggest problem with Sym is that she's still a Support, when she should be a defense hero. Few healers feel good as solo healers and a lot of groups are going to end up 2/2/1/Sym for a while.

The issue was that the best known teams in the pro scene (basically all US and EU teams, not saying they are the best, just best known) initially started that 2/2/2. This drifted into competitive, then everyone suddenly decided you NEEDED 2/2/2 or you would lose.

The 3-tank setup was being run for a fair amount of time and it eventually started leaking into competitive, it was just too late though. Even now, people are still saying you need 2/2/2 in Quick Play to win matches. The game is meant to be versatile, not completely static. Comps change.

For now, you have to remember what D.Va is competing with. Genji is just way too strong to be replaced at medium to high levels of play. The damage amount is just crazy, especially since we are looking mainly at solo comp queue. Tracer is rarely picked and Sombra just won't happen in solo. Even though D.Va is tankier, I still think Genji will fill that spot of flanker.

Also have to remember how horrible triple tank CAN go if your team are feeding ults constantly.

Pretty much. She should be a defense hero and Roadhog should basically be an Attack hero. I get that he has 600 HP, but his damage output is just... Yeah.

There's another blue post adding two new changes coming with Season 6, skill rating calculations after wins and losses and high tier players can now drop to lower tiers:
      Lylirra (source)
In our latest developer update, Jeff Kaplan shared a variety of changes coming soon to Season 6 of Competitive Play. Along with these changes, there are two more important updates planned for Season 6 that we didn’t get to talk about in the video:
Players in Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond can now drop into lower skill tiers We’ve made some adjustments to how skill rating is calculated after a win/loss
      SKILL TIER UPDATES
Players in Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond will now be moved into lower skill tiers if they cannot consistently maintain the minimum skill rating for that tier. After a loss, the game will check to see what a player’s current tier and skill rating are—if their skill rating has not exceeded the minimum for their current tier for the past five games, they will be demoted. (Players will never be demoted on a win.)
Don’t worry: Competitive Points awarded at the end of a season will still be based on the highest tier earned that season. So, for example, if you reached Platinum during Season 6, but ended the season in Gold, you will still receive a number of Competitive Points based on your Platinum ranking.
      SKILL RATING UPDATES
We've adjusted the calculations that determine how much skill rating players will gain after a win and lose after a loss. These changes should help address some of the anomalies players have been reporting, especially with heroes that have lower win-rates. We'll continue tuning this system and are committed to making additional adjustments so that players are encouraged to play the hero they feel gives their team the best chance to win a competitive match.
As a reminder, Season 5 ends August 28 at 5PM PT and Season 6 begins August 31 at 5PM PT. Competitive Point rewards for Season 5 can be found here.

Competitive play Season 6 is coming our way next week, on August 31st and Jeff has taken it upon himself to tell us about all the changes coming with it and the reasons behind them in this latest dev update! He covers the newly shortened 2 month nature of the upcoming seasons, control maps being Bo3 as well as the many changes to skill rating, matchmaking etc.

We're getting to see Mei's origin story, and it's a pretty bleak one in the beginning there. Blizzard have made another great animated short, deepening the lore of the world and filling in the backstory of the various Heroes, so take a look!

The gamescom stream has revealed a lot of junk! We just got the latest animated short, featuring everyone's favorites, Junkrat and Roadhog, starring in "Junkertown: The Plan". And then there's also the actual Junkertown escort map that will be coming soon!
