The developer update video goes into how Symmetra will be the first OW Hero to have 2 ultimates and also talks more changes coming to her on the PTR soon.

It's time for Game Director Jeff Kaplan to discuss the very long awaited Symmetra changes, coming to the PTR soon. He talks about how situational she currently is, the long amount of time she needs to set up and more.

But the headline is that she'll be the first OW Hero to have 2 ultimates to choose from at all times. You'll be able to toggle between the current teleporter and a shield generator that puts a substantial shield on all team mates in a large radius, ignoring line of sight. Check out the full video for a more in-depth description as well as other Symmterish topics:

Wanted to list all the changes and the points in the video where they're discussed, for those who don't want to watch the whole thing or don't need to sit through Kaplan explaining why Sym wasn't working.

2:26 - How Symmetra's new ultimate works, toggle between teleporter and shield generator by pressing Q.

3:40 - Teleporter has more health, some of that health is regenerating shield health.

4:30 - Symmetra's old shields replaced with a forward-moving barrier

6:02 - Changes to sentry turrets - maximum stockpiled charges increased to six, cooldown recovery rate reduced to 10 seconds.

7:25 - Her weapon is mostly the same, range of primary fire increased very slightly.

Coming to the PTR "very soon."

EDIT: They are up on the PTR now.

9:30 - Other information regarding the new map, Oasis.

EDIT:

Added a screenshot of what the photon barrier looks like to give an idea of its size. It moves forward on a path much like her current right-click.

Added a screenshot of the shield generator, providing shields to NPC allies without line-of-sight. It shields for 75 additional health.

So, does this mean people will stop hating me when I pick Symm? Bit tired of the "AFK, report" comments at the start of comp.

I really hope so. She's one of my favorite people to play but the restrictions of basically only being able to use her on D of a first point and only if your team can build a comp around her means that appropriate situations are few and far between.

Actually having a second ult that's compatible with defending a point B is a welcome change.

Definitely. I'm a huge fan of this rework and if you compare it to some of the other stuff that Blizzard does in their other games, I feel like this shows an actual understanding of the game and current meta. The rework makes her genuinely useful, rather than giving her a flashy kit that does nothing to change the problems.

Looks like season 3 is just going to be 76/D.Va/Symetra in every match.

Don't forget Mei!

Shame this won't stop the 2/2/2.

Towards the end of the season I was starting to see the 3 tank meta gain some steam. Every team had a Rein and a Zarya pretty much by default but with the D.Va buff I was seeing her take over the spot of some flankers.

I'm also curious if the rate of Zenyatta players will decrease proportionally to the increase of Symmetra. A lot of people are going to find themselves solo healing and Zen isn't the best in that role.

Yeah, this. The biggest problem with Sym is that she's still a Support, when she should be a defense hero. Few healers feel good as solo healers and a lot of groups are going to end up 2/2/1/Sym for a while.

The issue was that the best known teams in the pro scene (basically all US and EU teams, not saying they are the best, just best known) initially started that 2/2/2. This drifted into competitive, then everyone suddenly decided you NEEDED 2/2/2 or you would lose.

The 3-tank setup was being run for a fair amount of time and it eventually started leaking into competitive, it was just too late though. Even now, people are still saying you need 2/2/2 in Quick Play to win matches. The game is meant to be versatile, not completely static. Comps change.

For now, you have to remember what D.Va is competing with. Genji is just way too strong to be replaced at medium to high levels of play. The damage amount is just crazy, especially since we are looking mainly at solo comp queue. Tracer is rarely picked and Sombra just won't happen in solo. Even though D.Va is tankier, I still think Genji will fill that spot of flanker.

Also have to remember how horrible triple tank CAN go if your team are feeding ults constantly.

Pretty much. She should be a defense hero and Roadhog should basically be an Attack hero. I get that he has 600 HP, but his damage output is just... Yeah.

The events keep on rolling in, as we still have the Ana Bastet challenge going on until the 21st, and now Blizzard have already announced the next big one. The Lunar New Year is returning with the Year of the Pig and Solider:76 is pretty happy about it.

We also have a new video commissioned by Blizzard themselves by dillongoo, featuring a very fluffy Ana and Solider:

Here come the announced PTR notes, focusing mainly on some armor changes, going from 5 to 3 maximum damage blocked (remaining at a cap of half of the original damage). We also have another Brigitte nerf, capping the duration of Rally to 30 seconds, a nef to D.Va's Defensive Matrix and a big buff to Reaper's self-healing.
      PTR Noes, January 8 (source)
      HERO UPDATES
      General
Damage reduction from armor reduced from -5 to -3 Developer Comments: Before this change armor reduced all incoming damage by up to 5, maxing at half of the normal amount. This change reduces the damage reduction to 3, while still capping at half. This change will be mostly noticeable on heroes that fire quickly or in a burst of shots (such as shotguns), and which do more than 6 damage per shot. For example, Soldier: 76’s Heavy Pulse Rifle will now do 16 damage per shot to armor, up from 14, an increase of 15%. Armor was a bit too strong overall, especially when being healed quickly and often. This change will help more heroes fight against higher armored enemies.
      Brigitte
Rally Now has a maximum duration of 30 seconds Developer Comments: Sometimes Rally could cause a snowballing effect where it was too difficult to deal with the increased health of Brigitte’s allies before she built up another one. This change puts a cap on how long her Rally effect can last to make it a bit more manageable in those situations.
      D.Va
Defense Matrix Cooldown increased from 1 second to 2 seconds Developer Comments: This change allows D.Va’s enemies to try to play around her Defense Matrix by increasing its downtime between uses.
      Reaper
The Reaping Life steal increased from 30% to 50% of damage dealt Developer Comments: Reaper’s passive is one of the main tools he has which allow him to play aggressively when near his enemies. This change allows him to keep the pressure up as long as he can stay near his enemies enough to keep dealing damage. This change is particularly effective versus tanks, as they tend to do less damage than damage heroes, and also take more damage from his Hellfire Shotguns due to their larger hit volumes.
      Previous Live patch notes.

We have a brand new short story by Michael Chu, featuring Ana, Solider: 76 and Reaper, Cairo and a necropolis! The three of them meet while Ana is on a mission, and they all believe each other dead, but soon find out otherwise as Reaper chases Solider down and Ana steps in between them.
