Mei Animated Short: Rise and Shine

Recommended Posts

We're getting to see Mei's origin story, and it's a pretty bleak one in the beginning there. Blizzard have made another great animated short, deepening the lore of the world and filling in the backstory of the various Heroes, so take a look!

Quote

Explore the origin story of Overwatch's tenacious climatologist in our latest animated short: Rise and Shine! Then begin your watch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One: http://buyoverwatch.com

In "Rise and Shine”, Mei wakes up years after being cryogenically frozen to find that Overwatch has been disbanded, the world is very different than the one she knows, and that she is the last surviving scientist at Ecopoint: Antarctica. With limited resources and time, Mei must use science to figure out a way to get help.

I have rewatched the other shorts many, many times, and love them all, but this shit right here is a total snorefest. I was literally waiting for something to happen, but it never did. I have no idea what they were thinking with this one, guess all the love went to the Hearthstone short.

I sort of understand where you are coming from, but this short is a whopping 10 minutes long! It would have been hours of work for every few seconds of it.

While it is a bit less action paced than other shorts, there are plenty of little crumbs for everyone to sink their teeth into in the context of providing background information in the world of Overwatch in an ongoing story. A solid time frame of nine years since Mei was frozen in cryogenics, her team leader's name, how many were on it and many other details that may get picked up on, and perhaps most importantly, the fact that Mei herself was holding nearly a decade's worth of data in that little portable drive as well.

Also, Mei is bae. Just love her to pieces.

What are you on about! For me, this short was a roller coaster of emotions: does Snowball live? does it die? It was so adorable!

The short was pretty damn cute. Not on the same level of Bastion one (but well, that's what happens with animals, they are incredibly cute when they want), but still.

Not many things happened, although it was nice to see her story on motion.

I still liked this one better than the 76 short (it's good, like all the shorts they made, but all you see is Jack smashing punks, and while later knowing who Los Muertos are is important now, at that time they were perfect no-ones, nothing but a name on a wall in Dorado).

Pretty much what this short was all about, but cute simply doesn't work for me. Like: remember Mei, looks and sounds like a 10 year old girl, and her little pet, don't these eyes just melt you... Well they are stranded in Antarctica and find their way out in the most uneventful and boring way possible.

The only question I have is:

Why does a world advanced enough to have cryostasis be a (somewhat) success, sentient AI, hovercrafts and technology bordering on magic, not have solar panels.

Why would you be curious about that? It's with her in the game.

I don't play Overwatch unfortunately, because my computer cannot handle it. I tried it last year when it was at open beta and I didn't really like Mei so I didn't know about the robot being with her in the game. The game looked interesting, but at lowest graphics it was a pixelated nightmare and my laptop would still overheat :(

At the end Snowball comes back online because of solar panels on Mei's back charging him back up again.

Presumably the batteries that kept the place running could have been topped up the same way, but the panels around the structure would have been covered with nearly ten years of snow and ice by that point.

I'm more curious how Mei can walk around the place barefoot dressed like she just got out of bed. Insulation in the future must be top grade stuff; that base should have been freezing on the inside if it was a power save mode all those years, without who ever was the engineer responsible for heating and ventilation maintenance in those pods!

Fair enough, one would think there are backup panels (Even if small) inside the building or even backup generators. Because you know, freezing to death because of the current battery line short circuiting is a very, very serious possibility.

The good ol' diesel/petrol generators should still work just fine (Unless someone was silly enough to not insulate them against -40/-60c. Hell, get a bike dynamo to warm up the diesel and then use the diesel anyway...

It's apparently THE most important research center on the planet (Apparently some serious ecological disaster research), surely they have all sorts of backups?

That said, out of me criticizing all these technological weapons and such, Mei's seems one of the more realistic ones out there (aside from the truly conventional weapons such as s76, reaper, bastion, rein.) The instant icewall is still far fetched, but a cryolator (I stole the name from fo4) definitely seems very much a possibility even IRL.

I love the video, but it relies entirely on "The power just ran out!" halfway in the video, which seems unrealistic.

Honestly, the more I read into it and look up different research facilities (I had a passing interest ever since the nineties, but modern stations look SO COOL TO LIVE IN, SERIOUSLY), the more questions I have. Everything would be pure speculation on what is likely just some design and research into how these bases operate in a contemporary setting on Blizzard's part :D

It might be that they did have backups, but evidently something was wrong - they say at the start that there is a huge storm ongoing and that they have missed their supply window. With them going into cryostasis for 9 years, assuming they wanted to for a much shorter period, maybe those backups had already spent 9 years keeping them alive, or trying to at least? Maybe they had been strained trying to keep things running for so long. Keep in mind that she left her report system running for the entire 9 years, meaning it was constantly using power, energy, etc.

I do think there are a lot of factors that came together to cause the issues, especially with Overwatch shutting down. They wouldn't have continued to check on them and attempt supply drops. If they had, they most likely could have fixed the issues and saved them as soon as the storm disappeared.

To be honest, maybe Mei killed her co-workers. Maybe her running the program literally drained so much power over the 9 years straight up killed them.

So Mei was the dreadlord we've been looking for all along! It makes sense, as she also has an affinity for blizzards!

When you're contesting the point for 40 seconds in overtime and hear "Dòng zhù! Bùxǔ zǒu!" (Source) you basically already start typing GG.

      PATCH HIGHLIGHTS
      New Hero: Sigma
Sigma is an eccentric astrophysicist and volatile tank who gained the power to control gravity in an orbital experiment gone wrong. Manipulated by Talon and deployed as a living weapon, Sigma’s presence on the battlefield cannot be ignored. Sigma launches two Hyperspheres (gravitic charges), which bounce off walls and implode after a short duration, damaging enemies within a sizable radius. Using Experimental Barrier, he propels a floating barrier to a location of his choosing and he can dismiss the barrier at any time. With Kinetic Grasp Sigma freezes incoming projectiles in midair, converting them into shields. Accretion allows Sigma to gather a mass of debris and flings it at an enemy to knock them down. Unleashing his full powers with Gravitic Flux, Sigma takes flight, lifts enemies in a targeted area, and launches them into the sky before slamming them back down. Learn more about Sigma on his hero page 2.
