Blizzard's Unannounced Project is a Mobile MMO RTS

Blizzard posted a new job opening yesterday and the company is seeking an experienced Senior Client Engineer for an unannounced MMO RTS project.

In April, we wrote about Blizzard hiring a Software Engineer for an unannounced mobile project. The latest job opening reveals that the project is a MMO RTS (massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game) on Unity engine. It's safe to assume that Blizzard is currently working on a new title for iOS/Android. Let us know what your thoughts are on this new game!

Requirements

  • 5+ years of Game Development experience
  • iOS and/or Android development experience
  • Experience with Unity
  •  Fluent in C#
  • Capable of working very closely with artists, designers, and engineers to understand and meet their client needs
  • Strong understanding of game assets and handling asset version changes
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience with optimizations for mobile platforms

Pluses

  • Experience with code optimization
  • Fluency with C++
  • Avid mobile application user
  • Strong understanding of 3D graphics and shaders
  • CS or related degree
  • Strong data structures, logic, and algorithm skills
  • Strong debugging skills

I'm willing to bet someone is getting canned for that. They work hard to keep a bunch under wraps, now they'll have to release something about it sooner than expected. It seems silly but Blizzard does not like leaks.

On the other hand... more people interested in buying virtual-ticket to see the announcement of this live! :D

The hype is starting "whats it gonna be" and obviously people like mobile games. I certainly prefer pc games but even I have times where I can only play mobile games and would rather play a blizzard game then something else... and I do not count hearthstone anymore. I quit that one for reasons.

Mobile games overall are notorious for Micro transactions and it's not really unheard of in Blizzard games ^_^

All depends on where the driving force rests IMO - Activision or Blizzard. Of course there are factors from both, but a rush from one side could be a big issue in the quality of the game.

Welp, there wen't my hopes for World of Warcraft 2 or some awesome new MMORPG that would totally bury all existing MMORPGS out there MORE than what WoW already has done.

Oh my THOUGHTS?! Yeah to try to be "real" about mobile games at all is a joke, leave that to Rovio and their Angry Birds.

As soon as the word "mobile" is added to any game I immediately lose all interest.  Call me old fashioned but there's no interest in mobile games.  You don't have "control" over the game the same way you do on a PC or even console.  There's no immersion as well, I mean what? am I supposed to get chills from a cutscene in a mobile game that once it's done moves me to the next "menu for transactions"?  Yeah I'll pass, might play if it's free just as a oh how cute kinda thing, but there will never be real genuine progressive interest.

I had the same attitude until I played a game called Summoner's War. It's incredibly P2W focused, but the potential for F2P grind is definitely there. It's the only game that ever caught my attention as a mobile game and still does to this day. I don't know what it is about it that makes me do so, but I log in each day and get my grinds done.

Maybe this will be your game that breaks the status quo :D

I watch my son with all of his mobile games...  ALl of them are some variation of either Age/City/Battle, and Empire/Dragon/Civilization/Kings/Monsters/Angels/Demons

FF Brave Exvius was a pretty good break back to oldschool gaming.  My son just got that one at my suggestion.  It at least feels like a real game.  However, it's still suffering from the repeated "buy this to increase your gems for the day" windows.  Annoying is all I can say.

Yeah, you definitely can feel the barrier of playing more being created behind a paywall. I guess it's because we pay our money and then can play games on PC, for example, for as long as we wish. It's almost a subscription model on most phone games.

It's most likely they're wanting to do their own Blizzard version of Clash Royale. So a Heroes of the Storm version of Clash Royale kinda thing. So let's see what could they call that... Hmm... since it will likely be HOTS mobile. Storm of Heroes? :p Naahh. Probably something with Nexus in the name. :)

On a related topic of mobile games that are actually good and related to Blizzard too. There's a mobile game done by Ironhide Studios that did Kingdom Rush that's clearly inspired by Starcaft called 'Iron Marines'. They basically did Kingdom Rush art style meets Starcraft for mobile / touch screen devices. It's actually suppose to be pretty damn good. It's not free though, it's $5. Here's the official trailer for that if you want to see what it looks like and such.

 

They did eventually bring Kingdom Rush to PC on Steam. So I imagine if Iron Marines does well enough they will port it to PC too once it's made them enough money on mobile that they feel they can start selling a PC version too.

So there's my 2 cents :p

MMO RTS just screams microtransactions to me. Yo dude, you have to wait 25h for this thing to finish... Or you could buy glibglarbflorps and finish instantly, whooooo! No thanks.

Then again, I'm probably not the intended audience. Nothing about mobile gaming is fun for me.

I am old school too, I prefer PC games.

And yea all that pay to play and pay to win will be more and more in the future I fear.

I mean it's logical, why would they spend resources to create a game that gives then a certain amount of money just once per person if they can create one that makes us pay for the game the same amount every month? :D

I find it strange that a huge company such as Blizzard ends up using an off-the-shelf game engine such as Unity, when they can clearly innovate by developing their own.

About the "leak", I think it's a calculated risk companies need to take in order to attract talent for a position that is really hard to fulfill. If you are too vague in job description, not many people will apply.

I’m excited, was going to purchase the Mammoth Pack for Hearth when I remembered they had another mobile game in the works. I hope they treat it like the other free games with additional purchased content. They’ve done a really good job with Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. Why would this be any different? IT’S BLIZZARD. I’ve loved most of the games they’ve released. The only game right now you can start free then have a chance to get better materials through in app purchasing is Hearthstone. Everything else is cosmetic (HoTS, Overwatch, WoW?) I’ve been out of World of Warcraft for a long time, that may be cosmetic and items of benefit through additional purchasing aside from subscription. 

$20.00 set aside for a game I’m 90% sure will be fun, why not?! I hope they do a beta/tech alpha/beta like they did with HoTS to gain interest. MOBA or MMORTS I will play! :-)

      According to WSJ, Bobby Kotick, former CEO of Activision Blizzard, has floated the idea of buying TikTok to potential partners.
      Former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has reportedly shown interest in purchasing TikTok, as legislation in the U.S. threatens to ban or force the sale of the popular app over national security concerns.
      Kotick is said to be seeking partners for the potential acquisition, discussing the opportunity with notable figures including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The move comes amid growing scrutiny over TikTok's data privacy practices and its ties to China, with U.S. lawmakers pushing for decisive action.

      Bobby Kotick left his position at Activision Blizzard in December 2023 after Microsoft finalized its purchase of the company. Post-acquisition, he reportedly received over $375 million, as detailed by Forbes.

      Blizzard games like World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Overwatch 2 might soon make a comeback in China, thanks to Blizzard reportedly teaming up again with NetEase.
      The news comes from Core Esports, which suggests Blizzard's game services could be back by the end of March or the beginning of April.
      After 14 years of partnership, Blizzard and NetEase hit a rough patch in 2022, leading to failed negotiations. Consequently, when the licensing agreement concluded on January 23, 2023, Blizzard's game services were suspended across mainland China.

      With Johanna Faires recently taking on the role of the new President at Blizzard, let's delve into the history of Blizzard Presidents from 1991 up to the present.
      Allen Adham served as President from 1991 to 1998. Mike Morhaime held the position of President and CEO from 1998 to 2018. J. Allen Brack assumed the role of President between 2018 and 2021. In 2021, Jen O'neal was named Co-Leader of Blizzard alongside Mike Ybarra. However, she chose to leave the company after just three months. Following her departure, Mike Ybarra took over as President until a few weeks ago when he also announced his departure from the company on January 25, 2024. Johanna Faires was appointed as Blizzard's President on January 29, 2024.
      We've come across a Reddit post where someone alleges to have worked at Blizzard during Mike Morhaime's tenure as President, continuing through Ybarra's leadership. We can't vouch for the accuracy of their statement, but here's what they had to share with the community.

      Blizzard Entertainment has named Johanna Faires as its new president, taking over from Mike Ybarra, who left the company last week.
      Before this role, Faires served as the General Manager of the Call of Duty franchise at Activision. She previously spent 12 years working at the NFL.
      “It is important to note that Call of Duty’s way of waking up in the morning to deliver for players can often differ from the stunning games in Blizzard’s realm: each with different gameplay experiences, communities that surround them, and requisite models of success,”
      "I’ve discussed this with the Blizzard leadership team and I’m walking into this role with sensitivity to those dynamics, and deep respect for Blizzard, as we begin to explore taking our universes to even higher heights.”
      This leadership change follows the announcement by Phil Spencer, the Head of Xbox, and Matt Booty, the President of Game Studios, about massive layoffs across Activision Blizzard and Xbox.
      Faires will start on February 5 and she will hold a town hall shortly afterward at the Blizzard campus in Irvine, California.
