And I thought all this time I was unlucky and didn't get to play on new map lul. Idk about you guys but I've been getting Cursed Hollow rather frequently; played like 6 games yesterday and 3-4 of them were CH.

The map and its details, buildings and units rather represent a Warcraft3 experience than a WoW experience.

The tug of war battle of attrition between two teams of 40 players was always one of the most fascinating things to me though, before it became a rush fest.

Warcraft 4 already. Ridiculous that a game that propelled their entire mythos hasn't been sequeled in 16 years.

I get RTS isn't a top-shelf genre at the moment. Warcraft 4 would change that

Or it wouldn't, as even Starcraft 2 is in decline. Most people would have played through campaign and some multiplayer, but eventually people get bored/game starts feeling way too tiring. RTS kinda driven itself into a corner with it's gameplay, as (unlike in most popular multiplayer games nowadays) much more depends on a single player (when often 1vs1 is considered a "main mode") and there is often little to no comeback mechanic, one mistake usually means you lose huge chunk of your army, and the match is over. Of course, there is a potential of making some hybrid, but then you might end up with most of your playerbase unhappy. Veterans are going to scream "This is not the Warcraft I remember!", those playing MOBA/other team-oriented games might still find it unfriendly, especially more casual part. Dawn of War 3 kind of tried to do both, and it pleased almost no one, among other problems it had (that game isn't even supported anymore).

As for Alterac Pass, I personally can't wait to play on it. Wish they would have increased chance on getting the new map.

as for wc3 I feel like there is kind of a resurgence, even from blizz's side with the new patch.

but I do agree with you in almost every point. nowadays hardcore games like RTS just don't appeal to the casual player. wc3 was mostly fun maps at the end (which is fine for the casual player), but the pro scene focused around 10 top players and that was about it.

but wc3 is actually quite forgiving when you make a mistake, there are more comebacks possible due to the fact that there are more possibilities to get u out of a unfavorable position (staff, TP, zeppelin, speedscroll etc.), unlike in sc2 where fights can end in seconds (banelings?!?). not to forget that wc3 has a healthy 2on2 competitive environment (but then you have to like playing RTS games and have a friend who also likes RTS games :D)

I think in the end it is a question of financial risk / gain. Sadly at the moment, RTS games just don't sell as well as other genres do. And since Blizzard is a company that has to earn money I don't think they will risk it at the moment. maybe in 5 years when SC2 is really dead (and BW still lives on O.o), they want to publish a new RTS, maybe even something new (like a 2on2, one controls the heroes (for the moba players) and one controls the army and base (for the RTS players))

sigh, the dreams...

Oh yes, before that patch was announced, I was hoping for WC3 remastered, as this seems more likely. Hopefully, there is still a chance we might get to see it.

It certainly is more forgiving. I always preferred to play with team, as I was too bad to play 1vs1. 😄 Same with Starcraft 2, but majority pushed this heavily as 1vs1 game. 4vs4 battles felt more interesting for me, and there was a higher chance to see late tiers of units, instead of game ending in a rush. Still, WC3 is less forgiving than HotS or Overwatch, where I can team up with some friends for a few quick matches, and even with a huge skill difference we can have fun. In RTS those differences become more apparent, as slower player might get behind on economy, his base being obliterated quite early etc.

Making WC4 would require players to know how the lore has advanced in WoW since WC3. That's significant, and for anyone who has never played WoW, not at all reasonable. It would also mean that at some point in WoW, they'll have to incorporate the lore of WC4 into the world, despite not having it take place anywhere in the game. COULD they do this? Probably, but it would be super weird, and I don't think it's going to happen. Warcraft lore will likely live on exclusively in the MMORPG format. Starcraft is the Blizzard RTS now, Diablo the hack n slash clickfest adventure? (I honestly don't know precisely how to categorize Diablo) Overwatch the FPS, etc. I doubt Warcraft 4 will ever be a thing.
