Midgame Moves: For Light's Sake, Stay Alive

Recommended Posts

The second edition of Midgame Moves, a PvP series of interviews and tips from pro players focusing on, obviously, the midgame, has arrived and today's entry features Blizzard's  Samantha Cruse  talking to Method Orange’s Ryan “Trill” Costello. They cover how to survive when the team's healer is CCed for a longer period of time, using the map to your advantage, juggling diminishing returns and more.

This article is part two of our Midgame Moves series, where we talk to World of Warcraft esports pros about the metagame and strategy of the midgame of an Arena match. Read part one here.

The top priority of any healer in World of Warcraft Arena is to keep their team alive—but what do you do if they’re locked down by crowd control spells for the better part of a minute?

“When your healer is CC-ed for a long time—say, against a rogue comp—the goal is to avoid the rogue at all costs, unless I have an available stun or can paralyze them,” says Method Orange’s Ryan “Trill” Costello, one of the best Windwalker Monks in the world. “I’m not thinking about what my next offensive move is at that point, [because] if I don’t survive, there is no offense.”

If you are able to survive, that’s a perfect time to regroup and evaluate if an immediate counterattack is possible.

Obstructing (Hammer of JusticeHammer of) Justice

Each Arena map holds varying degrees of obstructions—usually pillars or platforms—that play into both teams’ offensive and defensive strategies.

A melee comp such as Windwalker/Death Knight or Windwalker/Demon Hunter must maintain some semblance of safety by trying to play around these obstructions, only venturing into the open to draw out the enemy team, and hopefully bait them into overextending. The best scenario would also draw out the enemy healer, such as a Holy Paladin, who may try to disrupt the setup by using Hammer of JusticeHammer of Justice to help his or her teammate get away.

Tackling Diminishing Returns

Each application of certain spells and abilities of the same school, such as Roots or Silences, become less effective if used repeatedly against the same target within 18 seconds. Eventually, the target will become immune to that school for a period of time. Whether you’re trying to set up or break an incoming chain of crowd control, it’s important to know how long those spells are anticipated to last, prior to any outgoing dispels or trinket usage.

Add-ons, downloadable modifications used in-game to enhance UI or gameplay experience, are inadmissible in LAN settings such as the Arena World Championship Summer Finals in Katowice, Poland, or the upcoming Arena World Championship at BlizzCon in November. During online tournaments, however, players can use whatever they desire. While these tools can provide vital information about your team and enemies, such as timers on diminishing returns or talents the enemy team took, it can become a damaging crutch once you make it to the big stage.

Being low on health doesn’t necessarily spell doom for any one player. Sometimes it may be part of a specific strategy, like when a Restoration Shaman takes the talent Bottomless DepthsBottomless Depths, which triggers ResurgenceResurgence when a healed target is below 60% health. In turn, the shaman will regain some of their mana each time their friendly target receives a critical heal.

While playing it safe can keep everyone alive, it’s important not to forget the clock is running. As soon as an Arena match heads into dampening, the priority shifts to overpowering the enemy team, rather than out-surviving them.

Check back tomorrow for part three of Midgame Moves, when we focus on time management over the course of a match.

Didn't understand the connection between taking Bottomless Depths (thankfully replaced by Flash Flood in BfA which is WAY more useful in many more situations) and Resurgence's normal effect which is to gain mana on crits .. ? pretty sure its not normal for shamans to leave their friends at 60% by default in PvP either lol.

The fourth War Within Alpha build brought some changes to Skyriding powers.
      Skyriding Power Changes
Skyriding Basics- While falling from a high location, your mount Dragon Isles drake extends its wings to propel you both forward. Pointing yourself downward grants more momentum. Evening out can transfer that momentum forward. Pointing yourself upward slows you down. When at your slowest, you will start to fall slowly toward the ground. You also gain access to the following abilities: Surge Forward Flap forward. Skyward Ascent Flap upward. Skyrider's Initiative- While dragonriding skyriding at middle speed and above, you gain stacks of Dragonrider's Skyrider's Initiative, up to 10. When landing at mid-to-high speeds, you create a shockwave, damaging enemies for [ Greater of {72% of Spell Power} or {72% of Attack Power * (1 + 0) / 10} ] per stack, split among them, and disorienting them for 3 sec. Landing at low speeds cancels Dragonrider's Skyrider's Initiative. Skyrider's Hunt- Defeating an enemy increases your Vigor  will grant your you 1 vigor. Vigor recharge rate by 10% for 3 sec. This effect can only occur once every 10 sec. Ground Skimming- When dragonriding skyriding near the ground, you regenerate 1 Vigor every 30 sec. This effect does not occur while affected by Thrill of the Skies unless Swift Skimming is learned. Thrill of the Skies- While dragonriding skyriding at high speeds, you regenerate 1 Vigor every 15 sec. Vigor- Dragonriding Skyriding abilities spend Vigor. Spending time on the ground, whether mounted or dismounted, regenerates 1 Vigor every 30 sec. Skyrider's Cultivation- Gathering herbs or minerals increases your Vigor recharge rate by 400% for 3 sec will replenish 1 vigor. Skyrider's Compassion- While airborne on a Skyriding mount, Dragon Isles drake, you gain stacks of Dragonrider's Skyrider's Compassion, up to 10. When you dismount, you gain a shield worth 1% of your health and gain 1% movement speed per stack, lasting 30 sec Lift Off- When mounted on a dragonriding skyriding mount, double jump to launch upward and start gliding forward. Skyriding Skill Track
In the War Within expansion, the Dragonriding Skill Track has been updated:
Dragonriding Glyphs have been renamed to Skyriding power (current PH name is Dragon Power) You will gain extra Skyriding power as you level. The costs of all Skyriding Powers has been reduced to 1 Dragon Power. A premade Level 70 template character starts with 20 Skyriding power and can unlock all the perks in the tree.
On the right side, you can enable/disable the Ride Along feature and the second node lets you pick between Whirling Surge and Lightning Rush at no cost.

All Mists of Pandaria raids and World Bosses are on a daily lockout in Patch 10.2.7.
We're not sure if the change is intended or a MoP Remix feature, but somehow, daily lockouts for MoP raids and World Bosses have slipped through to live servers even before the event's starts on May 16. Maybe this is a way to give retail players more chances on Tusks of Mannoroth since you can buy them directly from a vendor during MoP Remix.
If you're farming Garrosh, don't forget there is a skip at the beginning of the raid. As you enter, interact with the scroll on the wall.

Blizzard has added Glyph of Jab for Monks in the War Within, making Tiger Palm strike your target with your equipped weapon!
We've got some great news for all Monk players out there. In the War Within expansion, Blizzard has added Glyph of Jab that makes Tiger Palm strike your target with your equipped weapon, instead of your fists.

In the past, Glyph of Jab was a minor glyph used by monks, designed to ensure that the Jab ability was executed with hands and fist animations even when non-fist weapons were equipped. You will find more details here.
