Matchmaking Hotfix: December 21st

Call of the Nexus led to increased match quality, but prolonged queue times. Blizzard rolled out a hotfix for QM and Ranked to temporarily loosen the rigid composition rules that enforce meta compositions, so you should see decreased queue times on live.

In addition to that, Master and Grand Master players can now be matched with allies or opponents within the Diamond league.

Greetings Heroes,

We’ve just implemented a couple of changes to the Quick Match and Ranked Matchmaking systems (these changes will not require you to download a client patch) and wanted to take a moment to outline what has changed while also giving some insight into the results of our recent updates to this system as well as our matchmaking goals moving forward:

Call of the Nexus

With the release of the Call of the Nexus, we have seen a significant increase in match quality (in terms of meta composition) and have ultimately achieved the goal we set out to accomplish. However, we have also seen an increase in queue times, especially in certain regions, which we really don’t consider to be an acceptable trade-off. In response, we are going to temporarily loosen how rigid our rules are when it comes to enforcing meta compositions. Our overall goal with this change is to still create as many standard compositions as possible (Tank, Healer, Ranged Assassin) while also putting the quick back in Quick Match as we continue to make improvements to the system.

Hero League Matchmaking

When it comes to high level players (Master & Grand Master), the current iteration of the ranked matchmaker is heavily skewed towards focusing on match quality when it comes to creating a suitable game. This has the expected, but also less than ideal, side-effect of preventing certain high-level players from finding games in a reasonable amount of time. With that in mind, we are going to be expanding our rank difference requirements to allow the matchmaker to pull from a wider pool of available players if it can’t create a suitable game in an acceptable amount of time. With this update, the following ruleset will be enforced going forward:

Master and Grand Master players can now be matched with allies and opponents who are within Diamond league (Diamond 1 – 5)

Quality matchmaking will still be prioritized before expanding outwards into Diamond territory in times of need.

As always, we will continue to iterate on our Ranked matchmaking rules and features following this adjustment and make changes wherever necessary moving into 2019.

Thanks!

It was really needed, I played almost exclusively QM before the patch and after it I only play unranked.

There was some serious issues like, matchs with only one team with support (the first time it happened I was like WTF?!?! This was a thing of the past), bad matchmaking in general (I saw a level 21 who hadn't got a clue of how this game works with a group of diamonds and no premade shenanigans) and looong *filtered* wait for each game.

I really don't mind waiting for a good game, but 5-10 minutes for a shitty game like 3 tanks, a heal and xul vs 4 backliners and morales. Yeeah, no.

Thank god for this. QM was a fucking joke with 10 minute queue times being relatively common. I basically haven't been playing as much and been doing more ai when I was playing.

LOL. 10 minutes when you queued up as the most played assasin/specialist in peak hours.
When I played tank or healer I have never waited more then 30 seconds (EU region).

Actually "call of the nexus" showed how skewed is this game. No one plays tanks/healers. Even if sb is playing those roles most of the time they are bad with it (they only learned 1-2 such heroes to maybe fill in HL if needed).

Indeed, and it's great to see previous queues back. I think problem stems also from the fact that there are far more assassins than other roles, even if someone is flexing, they are still going to end up playing more assassins. Also, not all tanks and healers are currently viable, even in qm some of them might feel less "fun" for many people. There was also an issue of people simply giving up on playing, if they had to wait too long.

I was America region, I would solo queue healers and tanks as those are my mains. The queue would be 6-10 minutes consistently. Maybe my MMR was different than yours, but that's how it was.

I find QM is basically unplayable.   I get the long queues attempting to do a real comp are a problem.  But, these comps make no sense to me, and they are completely trash when trying to learn a hero.

Why is every game 3 mages vs 3 AA, or 3 bruisers vs 3 specs, etc?  If there are 4 Warriors in a game, can't we put 2 on each side? Why does it have to be 3 and 1?  I realize way more people pick assassins,  but can we not divide the roles evenly in a game as best as possible?

Deathwing is hitting Public Test Realms next week and a balance patch is scheduled for Friday.

The current plan is for a Balance Patch this Friday. We're still ironing things out though. Deathwing Release Date
Deathwing will hit Public Test Realms next week on November 25. The patch comes with a new Toy Event and Scarlet Heist ends December 3, so it makes sense for the event and patch to go live no later than December 4.
The Hero was apparently not ready for BlizzCon and the team worked really hard to release him by the end of the year, even though they could have released him January or February.

The PTR with Deathwing will be up next week. The Cataclysm is coming soon!
Smart, announce like 5 weeks before people can use him, that sure makes people not get frustrated.
We could have made the decision to release him January or February. He wasn't ready for the public at Blizzcon. A lot of what we showed there was temporary fx, balance and lots of bugs. We showed him there because we wanted to give the people who go to the show something we were releasing soon. We did the world shake and build up to get people excited for the reveal. We also thought it would be cool for people who didn't get to go to the show to see him on the virtual ticket and streams from Blizzcon.
We worked really hard on this hero to get him to you by the end of the year. There are a select few here that worked especially long hours to get this guy ready for you to play over the last few months (/u/Blizz_Thomas I'm looking at you and thank you my dude).
I know it can be frustrating to wait but not many people think about how frustrated they were having to wait a month or two before a release of something they're excited about after it has been released. But soon he will be here burning down structures and foes and hopefully your frustration will fade. We're really proud of this one. Hope you enjoy Deathwing as much as we do.
Hey, can you give examples of fx that will be changed for the release version?
Almost all of the FX had some level of touch-up between the BlizzCon build and release. While a lot of that is general polish and/or performance tweaks, there are also a ton of additions as well.
He's got new impacts across the board, unique impacts for minions to reduce the noise on screen, updated FX while changing forms to help distinguish which one is being activated, and some team color elements for Dragon Flight and Cataclysm.
Deathwing was a challenge specifically because of the scale and nature of his FX (Fire). Making things work well and look distinct between teams and next to other heroes with similar elements was a big challenge (I'm looking at you Kael'Thas!). Like Brew said, I hope you all enjoy Deathwing as much as we do and I can't wait to hear your thoughts next week. GLHF!

There's currently no release date for the teased D.Va rework. It will come some time after Deathwing.
In July, Heroes developers teased a rework to D.Va with the following changes:
D.Va's Mech Mode will be changed to only suffer Movement Speed reduction while Basic Attacking or channeling an ability; Her Defense Matrix [W] will gain the ability to be retargeted for a short time while it's active; The Big Shot [R2] (Heroic Ability) will be baseline in Pilot Mode. D.Va will receive a new Heroic called Micro Missiles. Based on how her Ultimate work in Overwatch, we can assume that she will fire a barrage of small rockets that detonate on impact, dealing damage in a limited radius around each explosion.  Teased D.Va Rework
      Blizzard (Source)
Based on the Developer AMA from July 2019, she can opt into a solo-laner bruiser build, a team-support front-liner build and a pretty ridiculous self-destruct/pilot build, with lots of interactions between these options. The devs also briefly outlined some changes to her abilities and talents:
Her Mech Mode will only suffer a Movement Speed reduction while Basic Attacking or channeling an ability, not at all times. Defense Matrix can be retargeted with a short cooldown while it's active. Big Shot [R2] is now baseline in Pilot mode. D.Va has a new Heroic Ability called Micro Missiles. Her rework is coming at a later time after Deathwing and they don't have a release date set just yet.
      Blizzard (Source)
We currently do not have a release date set for D.Va's rework, but we will let the community know as soon as we are able. ?
