Upcoming Changes to Shards & Loot Boxes in Heroes of the Storm

Recommended Posts

An overview of a few changes to the game's monetization model in the upcoming patch.

Gold

You can now convert Gold into Shards and purchase Rare Loot Chests with Gold.

Shards

Shards are used to forge cosmetic items for your Collection. You can acquire Shards by purchasing them with Gold or opening Loot Chests. Starting next week, you will be able to purchase Shards with Gold.

  • 100 Shards cost 2,000 Gold.
  • 500 Shards cost 10,000 Gold.

Loot Chests

Loot Chests can no longer be purchased using Gems / real money, so the gambling aspect is virtually gone in Heroes.

  • Rare Loot Chests cost 3,000 Gold each.

Doesn't seem like a bad idea although for me personally, I think the Gold prices for the shard conversion and loot chest could be a bit cheaper as some of us aren't swimming in gold as others...takes me long enough to get 10k just to buy a new Hero and RNG for dailies aren't kind to me ?

it gets easier once you have all heroes unlocked, took me about 3 years. and now with the slower releases for heroes i need some goldsink or it just keeps piling up

500 shards for 10.000 gold seems like a bad deal to me. You're definitely better off saving the gold for new heroes (for free!), limited time mounts or rerolls. I rerolled for about 7-8k gold during the Winterveil event on all the chests I got (50+ chests) and definitely got A LOT more worth than 500 shards out of those rerolls (multiple legendaries, quite a few epics). So I'm fine with saving up the gold for such events again. Probably only useful if you're a few hunderd shards away from a specific event legendary and the event is about to end.

Or buying chests with gold seems like a better idea, as you are getting rare ones, instead of rerolling a common one from levelling. Overall I like these changes, prices are high, but with slower hero releases, unlocking them will become trivial, so having some alternative gold sink seems like a pretty clever move (that and avoiding anti-gambling regulations in some coutries).

Took long enough. I don't really like these rates, but the most important thing IMO is having the option to convert currencies.

The conversion rates aren't final, though ?.

I think you should ale be thank full for this tbh. Alor of kids these days waste serious money on this and are a most definetly a cause for future gambling addictions.

Even if the currency swaps are pricey socially speaking its progressive and alot of games should follow this lead

  • Thanks 1

To be honest I think they should get rid of Shards and make all content avaliable through Gold, and increase the amount of Gold you gain per match/quest, etc. Having more than two currencies is too much of a headache.

They're just getting rid of the gambling part of the game. They still want to try and push you at least a little bit into buying skins and mounts and such with real money/gems to help support the game. And if they put more wanted stuff on the weekly 50%off sale items thanks to these changes then I'm more willing to spend that real money too. Like I was before the whole loot chests were introduced in HotS 2.0. ?

Heroes Developer Blizz_DWarner wrote a personal post on Reddit, thanking the community for the amazing time they've had designing the game over the 8 or so years.
      (Source)
      Hi everyone!
Just wanted to pop in and give a proper personal thank you and goodbye to all the lovelies that have kept the community alive and thriving over the years.
I’m gonna get mushy for a bit, but I feel I can’t even begin to express how much this game and its community means to me. Anyone who has worked on any artistic or creative endeavor knows that some portion of ‘you’ goes into your work and becomes inextricably written into your soul. It's painful to look back and see those freshly separated fragments of 'you' suspended in time, but that's life eh?
I started on this project some 8 or so years ago as an assistant technical designer, originally tasked with simple data implementations of the first sets of maps and heroes. Since then, I’ve touched probably every map, dozens of reworks, several core hero designs and of course several thousand bugs. This work was not spawned out of some special DWarner pocket dimension though, it occurred here, in the real (digital) world, with my hundreds of (very talented and handsome) coworkers and most importantly, you.
Despite what community consensus might state, designers are usually present in forum discussions, watching popular streams (special shoutout to FollowGrubby, CCL, and the crew of Into The Nexus) and of course sharing dank memes. All of your participation and energy helped us trudge through our difficult days (it’s still a job after all), guide our decision making, and just generally help us feel like we’re part of something more than just data fields and debug maps. We couldn’t have done it without you, so thanks, really.
If you made it this far, raise a glass of whatever and say cheers to all! Cheers to the passionate, cheers to the haters, cheers to the memers, cheers to the contrarians! Cheers to the goof leaguers, wood leaguers and the most sparkling diamonds! Cheers to the quickmatchers, cheers to the Vs AI’rs, cheers to the ppl that play every night, or only twice a year! Cheers to Spazzo and Notbelial and all the lurkers too! Cheers to CCL, the 323r’s, the 6.5r’s! Cheers to the whole damn lot of you ❤️
      Steaming hot regards,
      Blizz_DWarner
      P.S. I'll see you all in Diablo 4 ?

The skin was released with the latest patch and costs 525 Shards or 5,000 Gold.
      Flavor Text
An unrelenting hacking echoed off the walls of the Cathedral and as Prince Aidan made his way through its depths, the sound only grew louder. There were no screams; just that dreadful sound... over and over.

The mount is rewarded by simply logging in to Heroes of the Storm.

      Flavor Text
Adorned in heavy armor and brimming with the power of the Nexus, the mere sight of an epic chaos lizard and its rider can be enough to turn the tide of battle.

The mount has 3 tints according to the Nexus Compendium, but only the Arcane one is  available to players. The following variations cannnot be obtained. Images courtesy of the Nexus Compendium.
