Blood death knight, normal to heroic gear transition

6 posts in this topic

Hey there, my name is Sylvathane

armory -->  http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/emerald-dream/Sylvathane/advanced

My guild recently began heroic content after getting back into it after the holidays (many of us are fathers and had long family vacations) and I am just seeking a little help in the gear department.

Is my blood 4 set worth dropping for the stats on heroic gear? I have 2 peices, the head off norushen (dodge / parry) and the shoulders off immerseus (also dodge parry) Is it worth the stats to drop a 4set, (even though they are not BiS)

Keep in mind raid buffed my mastery sits over 250% so its not like losing the mastery would be a big problem after reforges.

Any help / opinions would be greatly appreciated!

             -Thanks in advance, Sylvathane - Emerald Dream

It depends on your outlook on what a tank should be.

If you want to be the guy that absolutely lives every time no matter what is happening in the fight and even if you DC because a comet crashes into your house in real life, then the 4pc is better.

However, with the current state of tanking in general, by about 570 ilvl you will simply outgear 10/14 of the heroic fights. and dying is rarely something you'll need to worry about. From a survival standpoint it is nice to have 2 extra death strikes at your command every 1.5min, but as stated, for the vast majority of the fights you won't really "need" that to stay alive. From a dps standpoint 2 more deathstrikes every time you dancing rune weapon, or 4 heart strikes is also nice, but if you'll gain a much larger dps boost by abandoning the mastery laden tier gear and opting for parry/dodge gear instead.

It really comes down to how well you're managing your cooldowns, and how strong your healers are. If you need more survivability then stick with the 4pc. If you can live with taking less overall damage, but having 1 less cooldown at your disposal then trade the 4pc for the parry/dodge heroic gear.

It also comes down to itemization.  Blood tier gear is rather nicely itemized this tier, which is kinda self-reinforcing since more death strikes -> mastery's value inflates.  Doubly so since you're both using the 4pc and have the CD-reduction trink.  Basically, the current setup you have has a lot of internal synergy, which is awesome.  I personally wouldn't drop the bonus until I could replace 2 pieces at once with either very well heroic optimized pieces (parry/mastery that sort of thing) or reasonably well optimized heroic WF pieces.

Good luck, have fun, and don't die!  Well, don't die again, death knights and all that...

Nicely itemized is sort of subjective. They are the best itemized from a purely survival standpoint, but as stated above with my whole outlook on the 4pc bonus, most of DK's survivability is overkill most of the time. I prefer parry/dodge gear for the extra dps over mastery gear because I don't need that much self healing. even with a nearly pure parry/dodge build with barely over 100% mastery I can nearly 100% self heal a handful of heroic encounters, and there are only 3-4 fights where avoidance RNG can sometimes make me difficult to heal.

You can also keep your extra tier in your bags or bank in the case you encounter a situation where you need the survivability. You can give the avoidance gear a try and switch it out if you're having problems.

I personally run 4set after which I try to gear for high parry for some Riposte damage, but thats just cos im too lazy to gather a full parry set and the 4set is just crazy powerful for when you need it.

We're still in the progression of the later end heroics and the 4set is a good panicbutton there if nothing else. If you're looking to minmax I'd say hold the 4set somewhere close for those progress fights and get some parry heavy gear for the farm bosses where you feel comfortable with your survival.

      I usually sim my characters to get the best possible results. I enjoy the process quite a lot and since I reached 120, I wanted to find out the best build of the spec. (Note, I didn't want to find out what to play, but rather how my own build fares in comarison.) I rarely mind a 1-2% difference. If it goes above 2%, I really mind a change. What this thread is about is mainly to bring something in the attention of those who help making the class guides, especially the talent choices. To my surprise, I was awed to find out that certain talents outperform previous "Standard" choices in the endgame, probably due to the stat squish.

      The Frost go-to build (top dps) would probably be along the lines of <Icy Talons / Cold Heart - Runic Attenuation - Frozen Pulse - Gathering Storm - Breath of Sindragosa>. What I found out primarily was that after the removal of legendaries, Cold Heart severely underperforms at most given situations resulting in a major dps drop due to the low mastery. Gathering Storm also suffers from the same problem and most of the times, Frostwyrm's Fury is better overall. The biggest surprise of them all, however, was that Inexorable Assault overperforms quite a lot, and is the first reason why I made the topic. I then started simming with the above in mind and I came across a build that some would not consider on par with top dog builds around the meta, which is the use of Horn of Winter which overperforms both its other two options when using the Breath build. Talent Sim can be seen here. Another intresting thing, which I loved, was that the 2nd best build uses Obliteration as a lvl 100 talent and no other build surpassed it (Other than the first one, obviously). So, I encourage frost players out there to give their other, less common talents a try. To the class guide author(s), I believe that the two "underdog" talents will earn their spot in the class guides.

      Thank you for your time reading this.

      <Maniacal Degree> is looking to boost its raid forces (Mythic and Heroic) for the upcoming expansion. We are looking for talented players that can contribute to the success of raid teams of multiple skill levels - particularly those interested in Horde Mythic progression.
      Mythic progression raid team: Tue/Wed/Thurs 6:30-9:00 PM server (Pacific Standard Time)
      Heroic progression raid team: Sun/Mon 6:30-9:00 PM server (Pacific Standard Time)
      MD is a mature, inclusive Horde guild on the Proudmoore-US server, with both social and raiding components to meet all your guild needs! We are always looking for active adult players that want to enjoy a community guild based on the ideal of all-inclusiveness. No matter where you come from and what your opinions are, we hope you find a safe place in game through Maniacal Degree. We have a few rules that we ask guild members follow in order to succeed in the community environment, but other than that, we want you to come in, have fun, and act maniacal!
      We are always looking for skilled players that want to get into raiding at a competent level. Our leadership has set expectations to clear mythic-level content for our more hardcore players as Battle for Azeroth releases, while also cultivating raid teams in a more relaxed environment.
      What we are looking for specifically in a raid member that is interested in progression:
      •    Players who have raided at a competitive level in current and previous expansions;
      •    Players that are new to raiding but are willing to work hard inside and outside of raid times to “catch up”;
      •    Players with experience should have logs to prove that they have raided previously and can perform in their roles well;
      •    People who would like to get back into raiding, but may not have relevant Legion experience to get into a current raiding guild;
      •    Players that know how to optimize their characters for raiding (stats, upgrades, raid roles, encounter research, consumables, etc.);
      •    Players that can perform multiple roles within the specializations of their character, as needed by raid demands and leadership requests;
      •    Players that are self-starters and can take an active approach in helping raid and guild leadership as needed.
      What we are looking for specifically in a guild member:
      •    Players who are active outside of raid times;
      •    Players who engage with raiding and non-raiding guildmates alike;
      •    Players who understand that Proudmoore-US is the game’s most diverse and inclusive server. The LGBTQ+ community is very active and established here, and guild members must respect and embrace the reputation and environment we cultivate both on the server and within the guild.
      Send me a message (Spaceghoul on Proudmoore-US, IsaacTx#1736) if you are interested in talking about joining our guild and/or our raid teams! Come browse our Discord as well: https://discord.gg/Eps7b2g
