New Arcane Mage - Need Suggestions

I wanted to try Arcane and after reading the guides on here (which are amazing by the way), I figured I would give it a shot (it was a lot of fun).  I was running with my brother Byunip in the raid.

There are 4 logs from ToT (Boss 1 and 2, 2 wipes and a kill, then another wipe)

I left after the first wipe on Boss 2, due to it being late.  I died on wave 3.  Got caught in a ton of crap (primarily frozen orbs) and had 5 stacks of Deadly Plague (15,000 shadow damage every 3 seconds).  So that was a crappy fight for me.

 

Things I know I need to work on:

 

  • Living Bomb uptime needs to be improved by quite a lot.
  • Rune of Power uptime needs to be improved
  • Learning the mobility aspect of the spec (primarily casting the rune while moving with Ice Floes up (from a Frost Mage spec, this is going to take the longest to learn))

Anything other suggestions or recommendations on what I should work on will be great.  This is a character that I leveled primarily using the Frost Mage Leveling Guide on here.

 

I just started on chapter 3 of the Leg. Cloak also.

I level'd to 87 as Fire, Switched to Arcane, worked a lot better for me once i got my head around rotation.

I dropped living bomb (even though it looks cool seeing things blow up) and picked up FROST BOMB, works better for me.

Rune of power isn't a prob. for me maybe its a talent / glyph i used but I can have 2 up at once. Use it.

I don't move till I have to (no mobility) i have the option (ice floes) but don't use it.

 

Arcane is about Mastery and Mana, you want both as high as possible.

Build up Arcane charges to 4 then use em.

Watch your Arcane charges big difference from 1/2 to full (4) charges. I origionally  got an addon (arcanometer) for this to make it super obvious but the new UI i'm using shows it well for me.

Getting Frost Bomb over LB on single target fights is a significant DPS loss. Don't do that.

Living Bomb 16% uptime, I'm sorry to say this, but it is just ridiculous. It HAS TO be at almost 100% on every single fight.

Rune of Power uptime should also be higher, indeed especially on a fight that doesn't require that much movement.

I do see a 30 seconds gap in uptime and some random 10 seconds gap.

 

Also I do see some rotation confusions. Like you used Arcane Barr before spending AMs.

 

Also, you used Alter Time BEFORE Arcane Power, so you essentially wasted 24 seconds (!!!!) of arcane power. Use AP BEFORE Alter Time.

Also try to use Alter time along with trinket procs.

I also cannot see the use of Mana Gem. It should also be used along with Alter Time.

 

I unfortunately cannot check if your mana management was right, but well. If you stayed above 90% most of the time, it's kewl!

 

Finally, even if your professions are close to useless for a mage, you should max them out. But since you have mining maxed, I would actually drop herbalism and pick up Engineering which is the best profession for mages, and you should use Synapse Spring on CD, along with Alter Time if possible.

Make a macro:

/use Brilliant Mana Gem
/cast Arcane Power
/cast Alter Time
/cast Arcane Missiles

During the pull, get your trinkets up, 4 arcane charges and if you can, 2 stacks of Arcane Missiles. Press that macro, you'll be on full mana and you have just shot out an Arcane Missile. Now, cast arcane blast, missiles, blast, barrage, Alter Time should reset, and you continue with the normal rotation.

 

I agree with checking out that Incanter's Ward thread. If you are unable to use the rune well then that might be a better thing to do. That living bomb uptime is essential though, especially when there are multiple targets; you will want to have either Living Bomb or Nether Tempest rolling on them all the time. Keep in mind that casting Living Bomb can trigger an Arcane Missiles proc as well, which deals very high damage if you are on 4 stacks.
