The Current Problem With Chromie's Timewalking Campaigns in Shadowlands

Recommended Posts

Veteran players can talk to Chromie in the new expansion and pick their expansion for leveling in the 10-50 range before heading into the Shadowlands, but the community has an issue with the system right now upon reaching Level 50.

The current problem with Chromie Time is that you get forced out of it and can't finish the story as soon as you reach Level 50.

Simply put, a countdown will start, informing you that your Timewalking Campaign is about to end, and at the end of it, you get teleported to either Orgrimmar or Stormwind, depending on your faction.

The current system does not allow you to finish whatever you were doing and many players do not like that because it goes against the very core of the Chromie Time feature, which is to experience the whole story and setting as they were.

Imagine you're leveling in Northrend, but get booted to a capital city at Level 50, and when you return to Northrend to finish the story, you will be one-shotting mobs that will be Level 30 due to scaling.

A good solution for the problem would be to turn off XP gains and allow players to wrap up the story, as suggested on the official forums. What do you think?

I can see how this could have been overlooked in planning. After all, my only goal would be to get to SL content as quickly as I liked. With dozens of alts, finishing a well-trodden storyline was of no consequence to me. And I was holding back a couple of alts so I could experience the new leveling approach. Now? Dawdle for two weeks. <sigh>  I approve Blizz's move, I just hate it is all.

Ye this is very disruptive for an otherwise solid leveling scheme. An xp freeze with some prompt once you reach level 50, say "would you like to continue on to shadowlands or finish the northrend/cata/etc campaign first"? Can be great. It should be unlockable at any moment if you deign to stay in the timewalking, and once you decide to move past it, it changes to level 30 and you can head to shadowlands.

I think they definitely need to add a way to make the choice to continue the storyline being pursued (with no exp gain) or go straight to SL content. If they already have a system in place to immediately teleport you to the main hub upon hitting 50, it couldn't take too much more to add a notification/option...could it?

Being able to complete earlier expansions I didn't get to play when they were live the way (more or less) they were originally designed to be completed was the main appeal to me of Chromie Timewalking campaigns... so definitely hope they add support for this.

5 hours ago, Jerus said:

Total XP needed for 10 to 50 / # of main quests per xpac = XP for each main quest

You misunderstand the entire point.

Blizzard currently not giving the player a choice whether to keep questing for story or leave for SL. This kind of treatment also gives you no choice on whether you want to do easier zones for speed-leveling (Stranglethorn, Peninsula, Sholazzar, etc) or play the entire expansion.

i think they should make it so that when you use cromie time you dont get any xp at all but you get level as a reward from the story quest you do that way you can see the whole story and get to 50 and for those who dont like this and want a grindier maybe quicker style you can just ignore cromie time and level like you do it at the moment in retail

Edit:

i know dungeons will kinda fall out of the leveling expierience but blizz could weave them in with quest and when there arent enough players they could use the exiles reach system and make it a single player expierence with npcs

Another announcement, another meme onslaught. This time around the Jailer seems to have gotten the brunt of it, as his appearance in the story video inspired many fan interpretations, with some amazing one and some with... genuinely frightening connotations.
We'll start with my personal favorite, as it's the perfect It's Always Sunny meme and a pretty damn good Avengers one as well, so big congrats to dorm_five!

After that excellent Dr. Strange/Khadgar crossover we move on to a more general one, as CD Projekt Red gets some of the heat as well:

And then we're right back to the Jailer, who looked a lot more intimidating before the redditors went at him, as they zeroed in on his wonderfully luscious lips:

Then we have a solid use of the new WoW meme format:

And even though we already covered this one before, the new Santa deserves one more look.

But we saved the best (worst?) Jailer one for last, and we assure you you won't look at him the same way after this one, as Alshainkt really nailed it:

In case you weren't aware, the November 23rd Shadowlands release date comes exactly 16 years after the original World of Warcraft release date, to the day! Whether this had any effect on the actual date choice is unclear, as it wasn't mentioned in any of the official posts, but it's a great coincidence if it didn't!
This also means that the Anniversary event will be live when Shadowlands launches, as it usually lasts from November 16th to the 30th (with the last event actually taking place over 2 months, since it was the big 15-year one). Even though we haven't gotten any specifics on it, it's safe to assume we'll at least be getting the same things as the usual yearly anniversaries. This actually includes a 16% XP Celebration Package buff, which will make leveling to 60 even faster, unless Blizzard decide to somehow modify it so it doesn't work in the Shadowlands. You can check out what was available in addition to the XP buff during the last non-15-year event here.

Maybe we can get a re-issue of the 15th anniversary Collector's Editions? Please Blizz?
So, there are many reasons to rejoice when Shadowlands comes around, and it's really great that the release date coincided with the exact 16-year anniversary of Vanilla!

Update: Game Director Ion Hazzikostas has now also commented on the issue.

As we just got the official Castle Nathria raid release schedule, including Mythic releasing on December 15h, it seems the World First race (and everyone else heading into the maximum difficulty at launch) will be clearing it during or very close to the holidays. This was somewhat unexpected, and I personally even thought they might delay the Mythic part of the raid specifically for this reason, but we now know that isn't the case.
As you'd expect, it didn't take long for the community to bring out an old blue post where Blizzard specifically state that they don't want players to have to play during the holidays:
As mentioned in the tweet, the key word there is "try", so Blizzard were very much aware of their own policy when making this particular decision. There were less subtle and understanding/constructive posts as well, with titles like "Times change I think. For the worse." and similar, as well as some actually pretty great meme-y posts:

The reality of the situation is a little more complex, as the raid race itself will likely be finished in the first reset, at least for the very top guilds, but there are many, many more guilds outside the top 10 (or even top 100) that will still be pushing and playing during the holidays. While delaying Mythic only would have been a weird and unprecedented decision, players would probably understand, and the top raiders that will be racing would welcome it, but it seems it's set in stone now, so at least we get some World First entertainment just before and probably during the holidays as well!

Here comes a response to the holiday-related release of the first Shadowlands raid from Game Director Ion Hazzikostas, as he talks about how a potential delay would affect the pacing of the expansion and how trying to avoid situations like this isn't always possible. The response comes in relation to a WarcraftLogs tweet and a reply to it, as originally spotted by Wowhead.
