Diablo 2: Resurrected Will Not Affect the Original

Recommended Posts

Blizzard are learning from past mistakes, as we might have the problematic Warcraft 3: Reforged to thank for saving the original Diablo 2!

As you might recall, the launch of WC3: Reforged saw the original Warcraft 3 LAN, ladder, clans and more removed and merged into the new version, which had changed a lot and wasn't a very good product. Fans were furious, even those that didn't buy the remaster, and were left without their beloved original game.

Thankfully, we won't have to worry about that with Diablo 2! Despite the team at Vicarious Visions keeping as close as possible to the original, changes have to be made, and we've already seen new quality of life improvements, obviously the new graphics and similar, which all seem like big improvements but will definitely annoy some. Franchise head Rod Ferguson talked to PC Gamer on the matter:

One of the things we wanted to make sure was that D2 original stayed D2 original. We were going to make sure that that game stayed there. For example, if you had a horrible code hacking mod that invalidated the security of the game but that's your favorite way to play, you can still go do that, because we're not going to support that kind of mod on D2R. Keeping the two games separate was a big part of that.

Hell Unleashed, my favorite D2 mod.

And that indeed is the most important part: the mods. As the majority od Diablo 2 mods used sprites from other games it was obvious it would be absolutely impossible to recreate them. So this news is incredibly important, as it allows all the old mods to still work with the original version of the game, and even new ones to be developed! So thanks to Blizzard for learning their lesson and letting us keep the OG experience, with any crazy mods we want.

It's kind of painful hearing them talk about these things and yet being SO VERY CAREFUL to not mention Warcraft III Reforged by name at all.    Like, go through all the vids, it's not mentioned ever.

So much got removed from Warcraft III for reforged that was promised back (clans for example!) and it's looking more and more like they're going to leave it to rot.

I still play Hell Unleashed to this day, and seeing the "online" requirement on the Resurrected page certainly spooked me. Glad they cleared this up. I don't know who's using our staff account right now, but I'm glad you brought up HU. 👍

Are you still going to be required to login every 90 days or lose your toons? And is the toon account limit still 8 toons? Or does each key limit you to one account Ah La  D3?

      Hello all
      Happy New Year!
We just wanted to provide a quick update on D2R and D3 timing for upcoming seasons and updates as we have seen a plethora of questions regarding timing for these.
For D2R, we are expecting ladder reset for S3 to begin sometime in mid-February. We will share more specifics on the date with the community in the coming weeks.
For D3, players can expect PTR for the next update to come toward the tail end of January. We will have notes that will be available on our blog a little prior to that.
Hope this offers a bit more clarity and helps with timing and scheduling for those wanting to jump in right at the start.

Blizzard have just released a new trailer for D2R, and we get to see the cinematic version of big red himself! The trailer features scenes from the act cinematics we haven't seen yet and it looks pretty great!
We also heard about the official launch time for the game earlier, albeit for the US, but we're presuming that it will in fact be a global launch - meaning the game is coming 8 AM PDT/11 AM EST/5 PM CEST, as per Rod Ferguson, the Executive Producer of the Diablo franchise:
