Two Tanks Push Themselves to the Limit by Soloing P1N

Recommended Posts

Venks-Thumbnail.png

Aka Ada and Venks are two tank players that pushed themselves to the limit and downed a current content boss by themselves. We reached out to them, and here's what they had to say about it!

On December 20 of 2021, Square Enix released the first raid tier of the Circle of Pandaemonium. Like all previous Normal Raids in FFXIV, the Asphodelos fights require a full party of eight level 90 members to get them down. But a few short weeks ago, one Warrior tank decided to test his mettle against the first boss in the series of four by his lonesome; and after he beat it alone, he inspired a Paladin to try the same.

I reached out to Aka Ada (the Warrior) and Venks (the Paladin) to ask them a few questions about their experiences tackling the boss alone. First, let's hear from Aka Ada!

Q: What made you want to try it?
AKA ADA: "I don't really have a good answer for that! It was just something I thought about doing when the tier first came out. I noticed that the fight was pretty lacking in damage, and my static and I always do the Normal modes together when they come out. When we did it, I noticed they didn't have to heal me too much, and I thought, "this might be doable." We wiped once, and it gave me a chance to time Holmgangs. So another one of my friends said, "I tried it, and the stack only did about 150k damage," so I did some FF math and with Thrill of Battle, I was able to survive. It just became a trial and error after that."

Q: Do you main WAR, or did you have a process to pick which tank you were going to use?
AKA ADA: "At current, I main WAR, and the only reason I main it over things like DRK or GNB is because it just feels good. I don't have any major reason about why WAR is better - it just feels good to me. Plus, Primal Rend! I see big flip, I see big damage, that's fun to me. Before this, I was a physical range main, BRD and MCH and such. I'd played that since Heavensward. I do raid lead my static, and I would tank sometimes to fill a spot for my static if one had to leave or couldn't show up. Right now, I'm kind of only WAR because my static needs me to be. Should the opportunity arise that another tank comes along and I can try something else, I'd probably do that. I'm currently a tank main, but more out of necessity than want."

Q: How much prep time or practice time did you take before you got it?
AKA ADA: "It took me about eight total hours of practice and getting mechanics down. I've been clearing the fight multiple times each week, so I know the fight, and it just became a thing of timing cooldowns and stuff like that. So with knowing how the fight goes, it took about eight hours of seeing what works where and getting cooldowns right...and that damn first phase."

Q: How did your static and FC react when they heard you downed it by yourself?
AKA ADA: "Some of them were watching the stream when it got downed, and one of our healers said she cheered so loud it scared her nephews. I've kind of got a joke reputation of having a big head or a big ego, so there were a few jokes about that, but really they were all supportive and excited at me being able to kill it."

Q: What was the most difficult part of the fight for you, and how did you work past it?
AKA ADA: "Like I said earlier, the big part of the fight is getting through the first two phases. After that, it becomes a rotation of cooldowns and things like that. If you watch the video, I shrink in my chair a little bit near the end... because I popped Thrill of Battle a little earlier thinking I needed it, but that made it unavailable for a stack later. I just knew I was going to have a .1% wipe, and it was going to tear me to pieces. By some grace of RNG at the end, I survived and was able to finish it off."

Q: Any plans to try P2N or the other Circles?
AKA ADA: "Yes! I already have. P2N I've gotten down to around 70%, and P4 I've gotten to around 80%. P2N has a lot of tankbusters and group stacks that are back to back and hard to survive without more mitigations and more health. My plan is to go back and try it when I get full 600 BiS. With P4, the roadblock is more that you have to have a perfect run because of the way the mechanics work with the orb and the puddles. The orbs have to have Holmgang used on them, so that's one less mitigation available for other things."

Q: Now that you've done it and the video is out there, would you do it again?
AKA ADA: "If I felt I had some reason to, I suppose! There's no reason to do it for an hour when I can go into party finder and have it take ten minutes! I definitely encourage anyone who wants to try to have at it. Go have fun - I'd love to see other people do stuff like this."

And now for the Paladin himself, Venks! (Pictured in Thumbnail)

Q: What made you want to try it after seeing that Aka Ada did it on a WAR?
VENKS: "I've always been interested in trying to solo content. I've seen a lot of people solo older content in Heavensward and Stormblood, and I saw that some fights were possible and some aren't. I wanted to see if it was possible in current content. I follow the FFXIV subreddit and saw that WAR was doing really well in terms of self-healing, I wanted to prove that yes, WAR can do it, but it's not the only tank that can. I wanted to show that WAR isn't so high above the other tanks defensively."

Q: Do you main PLD, or did you have a process to pick a tank other than WAR?
VENKS: "I'm actually a DRK main! I play all the tanks because it's the most fun role in the game to me. I played DRK through Shadowbringers, and DRK doesn't have a lot of self healing right now. It was between PLD and GNB, and GNB isn't a complicated class, but it has a little more going on. I just felt more comfortable with PLD. I also wanted to make sure I could do enough damage to finish the fight in time, and I felt like my damage on PLD would be more consistent."

Q: How much prep time or practice time did you take before you got it?
VENKS: "For P1N, all I did was go in the first time, and I was just curious, and asked myself, "Can Paladin do this?" So I went in there, and I was tapping my 1-2-3s to gauge how much the attacks were doing, in addition to seeing how many of my mitigations could block what abilities. As long as I juggled around my mitigations right, I realized it was doable after a few tries. I really didn't do that much practice."

Q: How did your FC react when you downed it by yourself?
VENKS: I haven't told them! I don't know if they know! I don't really like to brag. If they found it, then by all means, I'd talk about it. Outside of that, I didn't want to bring it up.

Q: What was the most difficult part of the fight for you, and how did you work past it?
VENKS: "Honestly, I don't think there's one part of the fight that's necessarily hard. The entire fight was a marathon and took me about 80 minutes to do. If there was one part that I was the most scared of messing up, it was when he takes you to the red and blue sections the second time. You have to do both left and right, and it's easy to get mixed up. I'm so used to doing Savage, so I was constantly second guessing myself in that section. I don't think anything specifically was too hard, but that spot scared me the most."

Q: Any plans to try P2N or the other Circles?
VENKS: "Yes. I'm not sure if P3N or P4N are possible, but two looks like it just might be possible. I've made a few attempts already and haven't made it thus far, but I'm making a guide for myself as I do it. I have a very precise idea of when to use my mitigations or healing so that I make sure I can cover some attacks with the same mitigation, or make sure I don't run out of MP. I have to figure out exactly where I have to heal at, and if I figure that out, I think I can do it."

Q: Now that you've done it and the video is out there, would you do it again?
VENKS: "I don't think I'd mind doing it again to see if I could do it better or faster than I did the first time."

Both Aka Ada and Venks were delightful to talk to, and if any of you manage to end up in a party with them for roulettes or raids, you'll know you're in good hands.

You can find more of Venks' videos on his Youtube channel at SuperTwoU.

You can find more of Aka Ada's videos on his Youtube channel and Twitch channel, aka_ada.

Congratulations to FFXIV Mobile's successful launch! As thanks, everyone gets a permanent Pathfinding Scroll, regardless of when you start playing!
FFXIV Mobile just launched their Open Beta in China last week, and it's been an adventure to watch! Final Fantasy XIV's A Realm Reborn has never been the expansion that everyone openly praises, but FFXIV Mobile's changes have definitely improved gameplay in more ways than one. As a result of its successful launch week, every Warrior of Light also gets free rewards, like A LOT!
As reported from the English community over on Reddit, FFXIV Mobile has gifted every player a Pathfinding Scroll, both current and new players alike! Now, I don't have to manually walk from quest to quest, I can just auto-path there instead!

The unofficial translation of the in-game mail, which can be found on the subreddit, is as follows:
"Thank you for your support and love. In order to facilitate [the] adventurer's travel in Eorzea, we will give you the Pathfinding Scroll item. Remember to use it in your inventory to unlock the automatic pathfinding function.
Adventurers who have already purchased it will also receive additional compensation. Please remember to check the in-game announcement for details."
What a heart-warming gesture! But wait, there's more! The translated version of the official in-game announcement reads:
"Thank you for your support and love for Final Fantasy XIV: Crystal World since its launch. We have noticed the positive feedback from adventurers on the game's automatic pathfinding function, and we also realize the importance of this function to all adventurers playing in Eorzea. Therefore, after careful evaluation, we have decided to open the automatic pathfinding function to all adventurers. At the same time, we would like to express our deep gratitude to adventurers who have purchased the automatic pathfinding service and will give them additional compensation. The specific collection and compensation measures are as follows..."
To summarize the reward and compensation details:
Until July 30th, 2025 (UTC+8), all adventurers who log in can obtain a Pathfinding Scroll via Mail. When using the Pathfinding Scroll in their Inventory, adventurers can auto-path to their quest destination. Look, hands-free! After the update on June 26th, new adventurers who complete the first main scenario quest "Welcome to the Desert City" (translated) will receive the Pathfinding Scroll as a quest reward. Pathfinding Scrolls will no longer cost Crystal Points (premium currency), but rather 100 gold coins instead. If you previously paid for a Pathfinding Scroll, you will receive a refund of 600 Crystal Points. The compensation will be via Mail within one week from the June 26th update. Remember to try the game soon, the Celebration Event (featuring adorable penguins) ends July 10th!

There's also a 7-Day Login Event with plenty of rewards that ends July 2nd, and there's only... 8 days left?! Oh no, I better get to playing myself!

Many thanks to the redditors RablaAndrews and Wizzed for the information! Did you know there is a growing English community over on Discord as well? If you're interested in playing, check out FFXIV Mobile today!

FFXIV Mobile launched in China several days ago, so what are players' impressions like? Is the game truly "FFXIV, but better"? Let's find out all of changes FFXIV Mobile made so far!
If you haven't caught on already, FFXIV Mobile has a growing English community over on Reddit! Throughout its launch week, many Redditors shared their gameplay and latest info, letting overseas players know what the game is currently like. But is FFXIV Mobile living up to the legacy that's over a decade old?
Final Fantasy XIV's A Realm Reborn first launched back in 2013, and after many years of expansions, it underwent many changes to its storytelling, quality of life additions, and content features. For example, players have an easier time farming for the Zodiac weapons today, compared to what it was like in Patch 2.0.
Now in 2025, A Realm Reborn has returned on FFXIV Mobile, allowing players to re-experience what the "good old days" were like -- but better. Reddit user RablaAndrews has carefully compiled a post detailing all of the differences, and we're here to point out all of the good (and bad) things for you! If you found the information helpful, be sure to give them a thumbs-up and comment, or visit the unofficial FF14 Mobile US Discord!
      Story and Quests

Every player starts out in Ul'dah, regardless of what class you chose to play. If you wanted to start in Limsa Lominsa or Gridania, sorry! Maybe they'll add this later on? Main scenario quests are better streamlined, so now players have an easier time following the story. Quest navigation is now easier, such as using Chocobo flying and NPCs for direct teleports. In FFXIV, you only unlock flying in A Realm Reborn zones after completing the expansion's entire main scenario questline. Thank goodness Chocobos in FFXIV Mobile are modernized! However, FFXIV Mobile requires you to unlock Aether Currents to fly in A Realm Reborn zones. Also, you'll get the Aether Compass in A Realm Reborn instead of Heavensward. At least you can still fly, right? Quests with solo instances now have a minimum item level requirement. If you don't meet it, you can't continue the quest. Remember to gear up as you level up! No more Combat levequests! Surprisingly, there are also no Guildleves. FFXIV Mobile's current MSQ goes up to the end of Patch 2.0, after "The Ultimate Weapon". There's no information yet on when the next expansion content from Heavensward will release for FFXIV Mobile. World and Regions

All of the locations in A Realm Reborn are the same in Mobile and FFXIV. This includes Allied Societies, Revenant's Toll, and even the Gold Saucer! I love playing Triple Triad! One teleportation difference is that you can teleport to any city's Aethernet shards, not just the big ol' Aetheryte. This streamlines the process of me traveling between Limsa Lominsa's fisher guild and Gridania's Amphitheatre! A Realm Reborn features Aether Currents, ranging from 4 to 8 currents on each map. None of them are locked as quest rewards, though part of Western La Noscea is restricted until you progress in the MSQ. FATEs still exist, so better get started on the Zodiac relic weapon grind! I'm just kidding, but they've updated FATEs to include Bicolour Gemstones, Forlorn Maidens, and even a new feature called High Risk rewards! You can also get some limited-time buffs that'll empower you after completing a FATE. FATEs also have a cumulative milestone tracker, where you can complete tasks over the course of completing the same FATE several times. For example, you'll get rewarded for killing monsters X times and collecting Y number of items, but you'll have to come back many times to get all of the rewards! Do you know about the Happy Bunny FATEs in Eureka, and how they'll help you find buried treasure? Well, FFXIV Mobile has that too, except it's Marmots and it can be in any region in Eorzea. Apparently, if you find all of the buried treasure, you can trade them in with a traveling Goblin Merchant. The Wolves' Den is currently unavailable in FFXIV Mobile. Does this mean no PvP? Not exactly: there's a completed map with everything included, but you just can't access it. Maybe they'll save it for a later patch? No Hall of the Novice, Housing, nor Palace of the Dead either! Battle Classes & Jobs

Classes have been condensed into levels 1-10, instead of 30. The class quests are considered part of the early-game and tutorial content, giving you gear and EXP. After you complete the level 10 class quest, you'll receive the class ring as a glamour and the associated job stone. Now I can be a White Mage starting at level 10! Also notably, you cannot remove the job stone once you equip it. I guess the developers realised Gladiators accidentally queuing into Labyrinth of the Ancients wasn't a good idea... Oops! Scholar and Summoner no longer share a level. Job quests are basically the same as it is in FFXIV, with updated quest rewards such as gear. Job actions have mostly been streamlined, possibly due to mobile limitations. But that doesn't mean Monk's job identity isn't there, I can still punch stuff! There are also new job actions and animations too, that aren't present in FFXIV. Speaking of job actions, FFXIV Mobile added a feature where, if you are a melee job and a certain distance from the target, your primary action button will automatically change from melee to ranged (such as Warrior's Tomahawk). If you're a ranged job like a caster instead, you it changes the action to an instant cast. Very handy for movement! There is also an evasive action button. Pretty self-explanatory, but different jobs have different animations, like dashing or rolling. For casters, you cannot slidecast -- you must finish the cast before doing another action. Thankfully, dying enemies won't interrupt the cast either: if the target dies mid-cast, the action will just automatically redirect to the next target. If you are using a healing action without a target, it will automatically target the party member with the lowest HP. Crafting and Gathering
Disciples of the Land are basically the same, but with less buttons. Notably, Fisher has an unique UI feature that shows the Fishing Log for the current gathering location. Disciples of the Hand, on the other hand, have a job gauge called "Tension". Instead of two synthesis gauges to keep track of, progress and quality actions will shift the "tension" dial in opposite directions. If the dial is in a coloured zone near the end of the gauge, it can boost the efficiency of an action in the opposite direction. Certain actions can also manipulate the job gauge, removing the item's Condition state entirely. General materials (such as wood lumber) are only made with quick synthesis, with the option to pay Gil and skip the wait times. If you have the materials, you can also craft items in bulk with the same progress/quality gauge. After you have crafted the item and meet certain stat requirements, you can automatically craft the item instead.  If you're feeling kind of lazy, you can purchase materials with Gil easily through the crafting menu. If the item is available through NPC vendors, you can select how much of each item, and just pay directly on the one screen. No more travel time! Dungeons, Trials, and Alliance Raids
Check out RablaAndrew's video on Labyrinth of the Ancients while you continue reading!

Dungeons are largely the same, such as with quality of life updates or updated mapping. Notably, there are some not reworked yet, which suggests the current state of FFXIV Mobile is from somewhere between late Shadowbringers and early Endwalker. You can obtain Allagan Tomestones of Poetics immediately, even on jobs below level 50. This allows you to work on your level 50 gear progressively without having to intentionally grind. No optional chests as you move through dungeons! Cutter's Cry and Dzemael Darkhold are both dungeons not in the game. You can skip cutscenes in Castrum Meridianum and the Praetorium, even if it's your first time. No more waiting on Gaius to finish his speech! The Labyrinth of the Ancients alliance raid has been adjusted to accommodate only 8 players, not 24. There are also no loot restrictions, which is different from alliance raids on release. All of the story trial duties are now 8 player content and feature new mechanics. This includes Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda. Gold Saucer
Bet you weren't expecting a section for this, now did you?

GATEs and gameplay is largely the same, though the mini-game machines are slightly different from what we know. Fashion Report is completely different! Instead of guessing with individual hints for what to wear, you figure out the pieces based off the scores of different participating NPCs. For example, if a NPC has a low score, that means only a few pieces they're wearing matches the theme. If the NPC has a high score, they're probably wearing pieces that match the theme well! Thankfully, you don't have to own the glamours to participate in Fashion Report, you can just borrow gear instead. But you'll get bonus points if you actually own the glamour yourself! You can get 88 points maximum if you only borrow gear, and 100 points if you own everything~ Jumbo Cactpot now pays out extra MGP if any digit on your number matches the winning number. For example, if the winning number was 1234, both 1337 and 0004 would receive more MGP than 4321. RablaAndrew notes the minimum payout is 2,000 MGP, which is still better than nothing! If you win GATEs on the "Main Stage", you can also unlock an extra three Jumbo Cactpot tickets to purchase that week. The Mandervilles are truly generous in FFXIV Mobile! No Leap of Faith, Chocobo Racing/Breeding, Lord of Verminion, or Doman Mahjong. Darn it! Quality of Life and Other Changes
Currently, there is only one data center available. All parties and linkshells are cross-world by default, and only Free Companies are limited to each world. Marketboards are cross-world. No more traveling to other worlds (maybe data centers too?)! You can also access them, along with any vendor store you can think of, anywhere in Eorzea through the main menu. A lot of glamour pieces are actual level 1 gear you wouldn't use for stat purposes. So these pieces either get automatically added to the Glamour Dresser or become an outfit on the Store. If you dye a glamour piece with a colour once, you can continue to re-dye it the same colour at no cost. Currently, 15 free Glamour Plates are available, and more can be bought with the paid currency. The glamour plates can be saved and linked to a job. If you meld materia onto a gear piece slot, it stays that way forever on the job. So if you melded on a Paladin's headpiece slot, and change the headpiece gear, the materia will stay the same. If you swap jobs, you'll have to re-meld accordingly. Inventory is shared between gear and normal items. You start with 300 slots, and can expand inventory slots from quests, events, battle pass rewards, or even by paying Gil. FFXIV Mobile is a 100% free-to-play game with optional monetization! Currently, you're not required to pay for any of the content unless you so choose. Feel free to read more about it in our news article! There are definitely parts of the post I have left out, and this is still long to read through! Again, a big thank you to RablaAndrews and the FFXIV_Mobile Reddit community for all of the information today! Be sure to check the game out if you're interested, and maybe we'll see these changes (or more!) added to the Global version of FFXIV Mobile!
