Inside FFXIV's Rich History of Collab Events

FFXIV has had a rich history of collaborating with other IPs, either Square Enix-owned or otherwise. These events have been known to repeat a time or two! Check out all we've seen so far, and potentials to look forward to.

"Such Collaboration! This was NOT my intention!"

There are a lot of wacky items in Final Fantasy XIV that may - or may not - look like they belong there, and FFXIV has collaborated with some pretty surprising IPs over the course of the game! Not all of the collaborations have been with properties owned by Square Enix, but all have been Japanese in origin from companies like CAPCOM, Level-5, and even TV Tokyo.

With the recent return of the GARO collaboration in FFXIV with patch 6.1 and the Final Fantasy XI event "The Maiden's Rhapsody," as well as the addition of FFXIV elements into the NieR mobile game Re[in]carnation, we started reminiscing about all the unique rewards we've received from events and considering what collaborations we could see in the future.

GARO COLLABORATION

GARO is a popular Japanese TV show - and animation! - that many people have proclaimed as the "Japanese equivalent of Power Rangers." The Makai gear was a long time reward for Gold Saucer activities, and it will be making a return for quite some time during Patch 6.1. Makai rewards include lots of shiny armors and long coats, and even a few weapons!

DRAGON QUEST X COLLABORATION

The Dragon Quest series is another IP owned by Square Enix that is nearly just as popular. The 10th installment of the series was a MMORPG which released on the Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, and PC. And the craziest part is the game was cross-platform across all of them! The most recent collaboration with this game gave us some insight into the questionable Dragon Quest tradition of 'Puff Puff' and rewarded us with the iconic slime crown.

FINAL FANTASY XIII COLLABORATION

This cross-over event was released in FFXIV to celebrate the release of the "Lightning Returns" game, and let players meet Lightning herself in Eorzea. To commemorate, players of female characters were able to unlock Lightning's outfit and hairstyle, while male characters were able to unlock Snow's outfit and hairstyle. After the event passed, these items were added on the Mogstation and are still available for purchase!

NIER AUTOMATA COLLABORATION

Yet another title and IP owned by Square Enix, the NieR series has been met with a lot of popularity for its multiple endings and unique storytelling. The series director, Yoko Taro, had a hand in the collaboration event with FFXIV and helped design boss fights as well as the storyline for the Shadowbringers Alliance Raids. The androids of NieR's universe were found on a crashed space station on the First, in Kholusia... and Warriors of Light even got to fight alongside 2B herself from Automata, as well as receive her outfit (And many other NieR themed gear sets)! As an honorable mention, yesterday the mobile game NieR Re[in]carnation launched a FFXIV collaboration, adding the Dark Knight, Dragoon, and White Mage jobs to the roster.

YO-KAI WATCH COLLABORATION

Yo-Kai Watch, developed by Level 5, is a Nintendo IP that was met with success in Japan and released later in the West. Based on the Japanese folklore of yokai, ghosts that cause mischief in daily life, Yo-Kai Watch has you play as either Nate or Katie to travel around and catch these ghosts - even battling them Pokémon style. In this event, you could receive Whisper as a mount, and each class had their own Yokai minion to collect!

FINAL FANTASY XI COLLABORATION

Final Fantasy XI could be considered the spiritual predecessor to Final Fantasy XIV, and Square Enix's first dip into an MMORPG. But XI has been so successful that the servers are still up and running, and the game is even still receiving updates! When it comes to XI and XIV, we had two events to celebrate the crossover: "Burgeoning Dread" and "The Maiden's Rhapsody." Burgeoning Dread included a special FATE to defeat a giant Shantotto - the poster child of FFXI just as it could be argued Y'shtola is for FFXIV. The Maiden's Rhapsody, which is currently in game, follows a questline in which players are rewarded with Iroha's gear for glamour purposes.

FINAL FANTASY XV COLLABORATION

A Nocturne for Heroes was an event to celebrate the success of Final Fantasy XV, and bring a little piece or two of Eos to Eorzea. In this event, players met Prince Noctis who had somehow found his way into our world and needed to get back to his own. Sporting his modern clothes and the very Batmobile-esque Regalia, naturally Cid had to get involved... and managed to make a replica of the Regalia. The questline sees Noctis safely back home, and rewards players with his hairstyle, his outfit, and a four person car mount that flies. This event recently returned briefly before the release of Endwalker, and we may see it return again in case you missed the car... or there's always the possibility of it ending up on the Mogstation!

FINAL FANTASY XII/FINAL FANTASY TACTICS COLLABORATION

This collaboration is much less an event, and far more content permanently added to the game. Despite Final Fantasy XII receiving very favorable reviews from critics, even receiving a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu, the twelfth entry in the series has pretty polarizing opinions from players. Some love it, some think it bland, and some think it's awful. (Personally I liked it!) This addition to FFXIV brings Fran, a major playable character in FFXII, into Eorzea as a pretty important character in the Return to Ivalice raid storyline, as well as the Bozjan Front storyline in Shadowbringers... and notes from Bozja hint we'll see more of her. It also confirms that Ivalice and all the events of FFXII take place on Eitherys, the world of FFXIV! Three Alliance Raids are added and themed around Ivalice and the tale of Final Fantasy Tactics, bringing back many old faces and some 3D renditions of gear from Tactics. The director and writer for both FFTactics and FFXII, Yasumi Matsuno, was brought in as a consultant and creator for this raid series.

MONSTER HUNTER WORLD COLLABORATION

CAPCOM has been a giant in gaming for a long, long time with worldwide entries like Mega Man and Street Fighter. Its more recent franchise, Monster Hunter, centers around gathering plants and materials, hunting exotic dinosaurs, and making weapons and armor from the remains. Rinse and repeat. It's become an incredibly popular franchise and shows no sign of slowing down. In this crossover, FFXIV players travel to a corner of the Azim Steppe to hunt the dangerous Rathalos - a wyvern-like creature with savage claws and fiery breath. Players in this fight don't have access to all normal tools and mechanics in FFXIV, instead taking a gameplay approach more similar to that of Monster Hunter games! Rewards include a Rathalos mount, a Palico cat buddy, a Poogie (which is just a pig in a striped sweater, who doesn't love that?), and much more. Interestingly, this collaboration went both ways, with CAPCOM adding the renowned Final Fantasy monster Behemoth into Monster Hunter: World for hunters to tackle.

 

So there you have it, that's all the collaborations we've had so far! But what are some others you hope to see, if any? Are there any series or franchises you'd love to see given a nod in FFXIV?

Personally, although I know it will never happen, I'm a Zelda fanatic. I'd love to see some kind of collab event between Eorzea and Hyrule. Given Square Enix and Nintendo's mostly friendly relationship over the years (we won't talk about that rough patch), it's not impossible to see some kind of Nintendo IP in FFXIV. Not impossible...but definitely unlikely.

Internally at Square Enix though? Maybe some sort of collaboration with the Octopath Traveler team, especially given the mobile game is finally coming to the west. Again, these are unlikely to happen but hey, a guy can dream right?

      Notes for Patch 6.11a have been released! This update is mainly focused around PVP actions and resolved issues.
      It seems like most jobs got a well-needed potency upgrade, with Black Mage getting a cast time improvement. If you are an avid PVP appreciator, this update may be for you!
      Overall, I think I'm the most excited over the removal of automatic logout. Sometimes you just want to make a quick run to the grocery store and come back to your character still doing their thing, you know?

      The notes for Patch 6.11a are now available and include details on adjustments to PvP actions and several resolved issues.

      * Additional features will be implemented in future updates:
      * New custom deliveries, Arkasodara tribal quests, and Somehow Further Hildibrand Adventures are scheduled to be released in Patch 6.15.
      * The Data Center Travel system is scheduled to be implemented in Patch 6.18.
      FINAL FANTASY XIV Patch 6.11a
      Patch 6.11a contains content that can only be accessed by registering the expansion packs for FINAL FANTASY XIV to your service account. To distinguish between adjustments that are and are not affected by the registration of these expansions, the following notations will be used throughout the patch notes:
      These additions and adjustments only require the purchase of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn and FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward. These additions and adjustments require the purchase and registration of FINAL FANTASY XIV: Stormblood. These additions and adjustments require the purchase and registration of FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadowbringers. These additions and adjustments require the purchase and registration of FINAL FANTASY XIV: Endwalker. These additions and adjustments contain elements that may require the purchase and registration of the expansion packs noted above.
      PvP
      The following adjustments have been made to PvP actions:
      * The balance changes made to PvP actions are based on the win rates and playability of each job.
      Further adjustments requiring changes to action functionality will be made in Patch 6.15.
      Gunbreaker

      When registering for a match in Crystalline Conflict, players in the Crystal tier can now be matched with players who are Diamond 3 (with 1 Rising Star) or higher.

      Players will no longer be logged out automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity.
      * This applies to all areas including the Firmament.

      The following issues have been addressed. An issue when playing as paladin in PvE wherein the potency of Holy Spirit and Holy Circle did not increase when the player had one stack of Requiescat. An issue wherein the description of the warrior PvP action Primal Scream failed to note the potency of Primal Rend and Chaotic Cyclone is increased while under the effect of Inner Release.
      * This is an issue only in the description. The action functions as intended. An issue when playing as gunbreaker in PvP wherein the description of certain actions after executing Continuation while under the effect of Junction Healer failed to note the range of its healing effect is 15 yalms.
      * This is an issue only in the descriptions. The actions function as intended. An issue wherein the description of the ninja PvP action Three Mudra failed to note the action changes to Meisui while under the effect of Three Mudra.
      * This is an issue only in the description. The action functions as intended. An issue wherein attempting to execute the bard PvE action Wanderer's Minuet multiple times in quick succession prevented players from queueing another action for execution. An issue wherein the barrier potency listed in the description of the machinist PvP action Bishop Autoturret was incorrect.
      * This is an issue only in the description. The action functions as intended. An issue wherein the description of the gunbreaker PvP action Terminal Trigger, the dancer PvP action Honing Dance, and the machinist PvP action Wildfire failed to note their attack radius is 5 yalms.

An issue in PvP wherein the additional effect of the redmage action Displacement erroneously increased the healing potency of the limit break Southern Cross.       When Patch 6.1 dropped, Square Enix introduced a new housing system for the Empyreum residential district.
      When Patch 6.1 dropped, Square Enix introduced a new housing system for the Empyreum residential district. Previously, Final Fantasy XIV was notorious for how purchasing plots of land worked. Aspiring homeowners would need to brave invisible housing timers that could range anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours before they could buy the plot of their dreams. To put it into perspective, players needed to camp outside a plot's placard for hours on end, continuously clicking on the placard on and off until the cooldown ended. This led to worrying health concerns -- chief among them was carpal tunnel syndrome. 
      Square Enix strove to change that with their new system that dropped in Patch 6.1, which was primarily based on "lottery wards." This meant that everyone had a fair chance of winning their desired plot through a lottery system governed by what is essentially a random number generator. All seemed well up until the results and winners were announced -- a bug was discovered in the system where the winning number zero was chosen despite no players being able to select it, leaving numerous plots empty without ownership.

      Resuming Housing Lottery System, and Instructions on Seeing Correct Housing Lottery Results (May 20)(Source)
      We have fixed the bug on the housing lottery system and reflected the lottery data to the housing server on Monday, May 16, 2022.

      Therefore, the next housing lottery will resume on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 8:00 a.m. (PDT).

      When the next lottery resumes, you will lose the right to purchase any land you have not purchased. If you have been selected and have not yet purchased your land, please do so before the next lottery sale begins.

      A new official music video for Final Fantasy XIV has been released!
      Since its drop earlier today, the music video is now #43 trending on YouTube. Please be aware that there are ENDWALKER SPOILERS present. Proceed at your own discretion!

      With so many emotional moments in the expansion revisited, it makes me hopeful that eventually a "Close in the Distance" music video would also be released. Would you also want the ending artwork as your desktop wallpaper?

      Colin Ryan is an English actor most well-known for his role as Alphinaud in Final Fantasy XIV. He has lent his voice since the series' Heavensward expansion, and there are no roles more memorable or iconic than Alphinaud throughout the course of the MMORPG's career.
      It has come to light that Colin's brother passed away yesterday, as revealed from the actor's tweet. Our deepest condolences go out to Colin Ryan for his indescribable loss.

      After looking into ongoing issues with the new housing lottery system introduced in the current patch, the FFXIV dev team is preparing to restore previously lost data and resume the housing lottery cycle.

      This is Naoki Yoshida, Producer and Director of FINAL FANTASY XIV.

      I thank you for your continued patience as we work to resolve the ongoing issues with the housing lottery system introduced in patch 6.1.

      These issues have been extensive and persistent, and I truly apologize for the time it has taken to resolve them. However, I am pleased to report that we have completed preparations to implement our fixes and restore lottery data.
      Reproducing the Issue Fixing Identified Errors Verifying Fixes Restoring Lottery Data We have completed the above steps to identify and correct the reported issues and are now ready to conduct maintenance on the public servers.
      Maintenance to Restore Data
      As I mentioned in our previous update, we will be conducting maintenance to restore lottery results data on Monday, May 16. This maintenance will fix identified errors and properly relay lottery results for affected plots to the appropriate servers. As a result:
      Winning lottery numbers will be displayed correctly, and land purchases may be finalized accordingly. Temporary suspensions imposed on plot purchases and relocations will be lifted. If you have a winning lottery number, please be sure to finalize your land purchase by 23:59 JST (7:59 AM PDT) on Thursday, May 26. The next lottery cycle will begin promptly at 00:00 JST on Friday, May 27 (8:00 AM PDT on Thursday, May 26), at which point you will lose the ability to claim land you won during this lottery. We will announce this deadline again as it grows closer, so please do not forget to claim your land.
      Next Lottery Cycle
      Once we have confirmed that data restoration was successful and everything is operating as intended, the housing lottery will resume.
      The next lottery cycle will begin at 00:00 JST on Friday, May 27 (8:00 AM PDT on Thursday, May 26). It will have a typical 5-day entry period and 4-day results period. As this is very important, allow me to reiterate: you must finalize all land purchases for this current lottery before the next lottery cycle begins.
      For winning participants who already received a gil refund due to the “Winning Lottery Number of 0” error
      Once lottery data has been restored, some participants may discover that they had, in fact, won the lottery, despite already receiving a refund due to the lottery number error. Even if your deposit was refunded due to this system error, your ability to finalize the purchase of a won plot will remain unaffected.
       
      In patch 6.2 we plan to implement an NPC by which you may voluntarily return the deposit you were accidentally refunded.
      As these housing lottery issues have been significant and caused great stress and frustration in many players, we have no intention of performing a data rollback to forcibly rescind any refunded gil. We will make an announcement regarding the voluntary return of housing deposits once the NPC in question is ready to be implemented.

      In closing, I would like to thank you all once again for your patience and understanding this past month, and extend my deepest apologies for the trouble and inconvenience these issues have caused. We will do everything in our power to safely restore your data, fix any remaining issues, and bring you all a fair and functional housing lottery system. Thank you for your continued support.
