Possible Implications of Region-Wide Auction House Commodities in Patch 9.2.7

Recommended Posts

rLU976x.jpg

Folks over at r/woweconomy started discussing possible implications of region-wide Auction House commodities coming in Patch 9.2.7 and we have the highlights.

Blizzard surprised us with a Patch 9.2.7 update which brings region-wide Auction House commodities and a new chat channel for trade. Note that the region-wide commodity change only applies to materials. Armor and weapons will continue to be realm-specific.

AUCTION HOUSE UPDATE: REGION-WIDE COMMODITIES

  • Auction Houses across all realms on a given region will now share commodity listings (gems, herbs, flasks, consumables, etc.). Items that aren’t commodities –- like armor and weapons –- will continue to be realm-specific.

The gold making community at r/woweconomy started theorizing about the impact of region-wide commodities. Here's an overview of the main points:

  • The price of materials should drastically go down on low population / dead realms with the introduction of region-wide commodities.
  • Low pop realms should also see items that wouldn't be otherwise available on the Auction House on their realm.
  • The Auction House is somewhat laggy on high-population realms and gold makers wonder if Blizzard's back-end structure will be able to handle region-wide commodities during peak hours.
  • Gold makers worry that they'll have to compete with bots from other servers.
  • The increased competition will drive prices down for almost everything.
  • Instead of competing with your server, you'll compete with the whole region.
  • Gold makers won't be able to reset the market, which often happens if an individual controls specific goods to drive out competition.
  • People will make less gold selling herbs, flasks, enchants, gems, and so forth.
  • Homogenizing markets takes the fun out of figuring out server niches.
  • The cost of commodities and consumables will normalize across the region.
  • Vendor shuffles will likely become more popular.

That's probably the most interesting point, which is good news for casuals and bad news for someone whose life work is controlling the flow of saronite ore and purple lotus.

Someone pointed out to me that this may inflate the already out of control bot situation we have in this game. Give them more access to the whole market as it were instead of individual servers, I remain hopefully but Blizzard doesn't necessarily do a good job of preventing them from running amok as it is.

Most people who do nothing but Farm for Gold are RMT traders. This is fanfuckingtastic for normal players.. Job Well Done Blizzard.

This will be the best thing to ever happen to botters and RMTraders, the worst for casuals and hobby traders. Be prepared for prices to increase exponentially across the board.

This will go down as the dumbest idea since LFG, maybe even worse than flight.

well, that probably leads to competition between bots or hardcore 24/7 dudes with (mechanical) multi boxxing. prices will drop down since no one will be able to reset prices and while amor and weapons arent included, craftable stuff that requires material that you can buy cheap now since the AH will be flooded with it, will drop next in price. so in the long run, casuals wont be able to generate as much gold as they do now, even people who use AH semi proffession wont keep up and people have to buy more wow tokens in general. smart move by blizzard. but thats just my personal opinion.

they need to change the AH system in general, espcially with the new system. some of my ideas would be;

-merge all accounts someone owns into one so that you got no multi accounts.

-make having more then 1 account a bannable reason, you are only allowed to be online with 1 char at the same time.

-put a small CD on creating auctions, for example each material got its own X minutes CD, while one is on CD you can still list others. (atm on big realms you are the lowest seller for about 20-30 seconds on prime times even less, this will get worse with merging)

following part would probably need more employees so its unlikly that its gonna happen but

-keep an eye on ~top 50 people with most sold auctions.

-keep an eye on farm spots

I'll touch on a few of your points.

Firstly, I don't think merging accounts into one will accomplish much other than create confusion. Wouldn't it become harder to keep track of your items and characters if they're all lumped together?

I also disagree with banning a 2nd account - if someone pays for a second account, they should be able to use it, I don't see anything wrong with that. Blizz likes people paying for accounts.

I don't think placing cooldowns on auction actions is a good idea either: I feel at best it unnecessarily throttles supply, and at worst it encourages players to seek automation tools to handle the cooldown.

I'm not sure what watching the top sellers accomplishes, nor watching farm spots. What is the goal here?

thx for your reply,

my idea was, that if people are online with 1 charakter only, they cant multibox or run bots that easily. if they use a 2nd pc that could be a problem thought. but you are right, due to money reasons that wouldnt be done.

that it throttles was intended because like it is atm you have to relist your auctions on big realms every few seconds or you arent the lowest seller anymore. when the changes will hit, materials like ores or herbs will flood the AH and you dont just have to compete with people from one realm, but with all the people in the region. therefor something like a short cd (30-60 sec?) would at least slow it down a little and since you cant just log into a 2nd account you cant bypass that. that was my idea

my intention behind the last points was to observe people and find bot patterns easier, like it was and might still be but we get less and less employees working at things like that due to money reasons.

what an odd way to interpret that sentence. its arguable if "stuff will be more affordable". if you bought a wow token to have gold all the time, then maybe stuff will be more affordable in the beginning but you also will get less gold for a token in the long run because people will generate less gold. if you use in game methods to make gold and might also buy your game time with it, you cant afford as much stuff as before because you are (partly) cut off of your in game income.

right now account sharing (no matter if its a wow account or a bnet account) isnt allowed except your son is a minor. so no problem in adapting that if your son is a minor. in a blue post they said "The only person who should have the account details is YOU. No one else. No cats, siblings, brother, sisters. Maybe parents, so they can use the parental control" so im not even sure if playing together is included. that sharing overall isnt allowed is written in the ToS.

We have a Crest switch fix and weekly maximum increase, as well as a quest fix in retail, the big class tuning pass for Season of Discovery, and more in today's hotfixes.
      April 23 (Source)
      Items
Season 3 (Dreaming) crests are now correctly removed from players' currency tabs. Players have received a small amount of gold for their unused Dreaming Crests. Players can now earn up to 120 crests of each type per week in Dragonflight Season 4 (was a maximum of 90 per week in Season 3). This will allow for up to 8 upgrades per week, per crest type (was 6 in Season 3). Developers' notes: For players who don't reach their maximum crest earnings in a given week, we've implemented the increasing-seasonal-cap system from previous seasons. Please note that this increase is likely applicable to Season 4 only. We expect the weekly maximum to return to 90 for The War Within Season One. Quests
Resolved an issue where abandoning the quest "Something Worth Celebrating" could make it unavailable. Cataclysm Classic
The dates for Children’s Week have been adjusted so that the holiday begins and ends three days later than previously scheduled. Season of Discovery
Players who have completed the quest "Warranty Claim" but have misplaced their Pristine G-7 C.O.R.E. Processor before handing in the quest "Salvaging the Salvagematic" may now speak with the Lost and Found vendor Rix Xizzix in Booty Bay to recover the misplaced quest item. Fixed a Sunken Temple issue where the Atal'ai Defenders encounter would not reset properly. Druid The Natural Weapons talents now increases all damage done by druids in Season of Discovery, instead of just physical damage. The Gale Winds rune now reduces the mana cost of Hurricane by 60%. Swiftmend no longer consumes a Rejuvenation or Regrowth effect on the target when used. Developers’ notes: Please note that it does still require Rejuvenation or Regrowth to be on the target to be used. Hunter Rapid Killing now reduces the cooldown of Rapid Fire by 80% (was a reduction of 2 minutes). Chimera Shot weapon damage percent increased to 135% (was 120%). Explosive Shot base damage before attack power increased by 50%. Sniper Training has an additional new effect: while Sniper Training is at 5 stacks, Aimed Shot is instant. Serpent Spread now causes Multi-shot to apply Serpent Sting to its targets for 12 seconds (was 6 seconds). Steady Shot now deals 100% weapon damage (was 75%). Developers’ notes: There are more adjustments coming for Hunters. In general, we intend to improve the ranged playstyle and diminish the melee playstyle so that the two become more equivalent. Paladin Seal of Righteousness damage can now be critical hits. Sacred Shield’s duration is extended to 60 seconds (was 30 seconds). Crusader Strike has now gained an additional effect: Crusader strike now refreshes all judgement effects active on the target to a 30 second remaining duration. Seal of Martyrdom can now “twist” with other seals, including Seal of Command. Developers’ notes: Seal twisting was an interesting emergent effect that became popular during the original Burning Crusade, that utilized the slower server messaging system used in early versions of WoW to slightly extend the duration of the paladin’s active seal for a short time whenever a second seal was cast. This effectively allowed paladins to momentarily gain the benefit of two seals at once if they timed the application of a new seal to line up perfectly just before their weapon swing. We recreated this playstyle in Burning Crusade Classic and since then it’s been a popular request in other versions of original WoW, including Season of Discovery. As the game matures and we continue to listen to player feedback however, we recognize that for some, this is part of the charm and uniqueness of playing a paladin during those early eras of WoW’s history. We consider this change to be experimental and we will watch the performance and behavior of Retribution closely after this change. Priest Shadowform now increases all shadow damage done by 25% (was 15%). Rogue Saber Slash bleed now stacks up to 5 times. Saber Slash bleed now also increases the impact damage done by Sinister Strike and Saber Slash by 15% per stack for the rogue who applied the bleed. Saber Slash bleed now deals 3% of the rogue’s Attack Power in damage per tick (was 5%). Shaman Mental Dexterity now only triggers from dealing damage with Stormstrike and Lava Lash, and it now lasts 30 seconds (was 10 seconds). Burn now increases Flame Shock Damage by 100% and flame shock DoT duration by 6 seconds, and causes Flame Shock to strike up to 5 targets (was 3 targets). Developers’ notes: We’ve received a lot of feedback about the overall usability of mental dexterity, particularly for Elemental Shamans. This ability was not intended to be used by elemental, so the adjustments we’ve made are to help ensure its usage is a bit more enhancement-centric. To compensate, we’ve increased the output and usability of the Burn rune, with a slight quality-of-life improvement in the form of a Flame Shock duration increase which allows two Lava Burst casts to be used within a single Flame Shock duration.
