Choose Your Preferrred Flight Style in Patch 10.1.5

Recommended Posts

72561-dragonriding-will-continue-after-d

With Dragonriding coming to Azeroth, players can pick their preferred flight style in Patch 10.1.5.

Two flight styles are available in Patch 10.1.5, allowing you to either keep the old flying as it currently works or switch to Dragonriding whenever flying is available.

  • Flight Style: Static Flight Style: Static - This refers to old flying and Blizzard calls it "Static Flight Style".
  • Flight Style: Dynamic Flight Style: Dynamic - "Dynamic Flight Style" is Dragonriding. You gain access to dynamic flight abilities in areas where you can fly.

Blizzard confirmed in an interview that Dragonriding is here to stay even after Dragonflight, but they "would need to overcome some technical hurdles to make it work in the old world". It seems the biggest issues have been resolved and we'll see Dragonriding working in Azeroth relatively soon.

I wonder if you will be able to switch between the modes as you please? So maybe one week I wanna do oldschool type flying, and another I want to do DF-style?

Interesting to see if Druids will have the option to dragonfly with their flying form as well.

Only dragon mounts will work

Wow, I'm actually surprised it's happening this soon. Definitely expected it to be later in the expansion, though admittingly the discussion about it was getting bigger by the month so they had to adress it soon.

This new flying mechanic is likely going to replace the old one, this is likely a test to see how popular it will be, it will eventually be the flying that the game has, even though the whole dragonriding thing is utterly trash.

The number of people I know with some form of arthritis, or some sort of motion sickness for the New Style, who'll basically be able to start playing the Current Xpac if they introduce "static flying" as they put it... is nonzero.

I've got a guildmate on an RP server who basically wept when he realized his hands couldn't DO this. 😕

I’m a big fan of dragonriding, and am very glad to here it’s coming to old zones so soon. It has dramatically changed traveling in the game from a boring chore to something that is actually engaging (i.e., fun for most of us).

I do agree that accessibility means it’s critical to have a travel mode not reliant on the player’s dexterity. But that should not, in any way, hold them back from also expanding on dragonriding.

Every time I say something like this that I didn’t like dragon riding for doing any type of questing or farming i would get sh*t on inevitably git gud but lets be honest it’s annoying af when u wanna just chill an not play a mini game to travel especially with my weak wrists.

Incorrect. Wowhead has a list of 89 mounts that are currently enabled for Dragonriding. Not all of them are Dragons.

True, but most are, and the few that aren't still share models with existing dragonriding mounts. Firehawks are reskinned proto-drakes, etc. They're still limiting dynamic flight to a fairly small selection of mounts.

If you play the game couldn’t you hit a few buttons to fly every 5 to 10 sec? I’am pretty sure you can make macros for the buttons and bind them to a mouse. It does kinda suck that reg flying hasn’t been available though tbh, sometimes I just don’t feel like spamming the speed button, and trying to land on a perch is kinda awful too even with the new talent.

Can they currently do so in DF? It doesn't make sense that it would be an option at all given that flight form is somewhat different than mounted flight.

I hate it. It's regular flying with restrictions and instead of just flying to your destination, you have to deal with resources and abilities. Regular flying accomplishes exactly what it was meant to.

Some people's hands can't.

Some people's mouse is an eyeball-tracker.

Just cuz you're a lucky enough soul to be ordinary doesn't mean it has to be ...as folk say, a minigame...

For another pal of mine, not the arthritic, LANDING is the minigame to hate.

I wonder what they are going to do about other mounts, if anything. It would be weird for flying machines and various discs to fly like winged creatures, flapping their non-existent wings.

Anyway, it's good that they will allow normal flying as well. I am still not a big fan of dragonriding, especially when I have to often mount and dismount in order to pick up something, then it quickly forces me into waiting for vigor to regenerate.

I have no additional knowledge about this, but... of course you will? It'll be a toggle, possibly like War Mode in capitals and similar, or maybe even anywhere at any time, you just have to re-mount. It would make absolutely no sense any other way.

There's not really a way to compare the two but I'm assuming that dragonriding is way faster than regular flying?

They can't currently fly with their flight form in Dragonflight zones but considering the entire game will be available eventually for both static - old flying and dynamic - dragonflying, it would make sense if Druids could choose dynamic and use their flight form with dragonflying as well.

Well, let's be honest: a lot of the typical dragonflight abilities simply don't work for a lot of mounts. They are definitely designed having a big winged beast in mind. I think having a mount like the Headless Horseman's mount is going to look really weird if it moved around with dragonflying abilities, it's just not how a hovering horse should move. Those mounts are just made for static flying, and even as a Dragonflyer myself I'm fine with that.

I hope it's available as a toggle outside of capitals, more convenient when someone wants to switch just for a moment to not wait for vigor to regenerate.

That exact reason may be why they're not available outside of capitals 😄

The World First Mythic Fyrakk kill triggered Fyr'alath to start dropping in the whole region next reset and in our latest post, we're looking at how to get the Legendary weapon!
Fyr'alath the Dreamrender will start dropping on live servers starting with the weekly reset, but the Legendary Axe comes in different stages and effects.
The initial legendary consumable drops from Fyrakk. Apparently, it has an increased drop chance on higher difficulties. Once equipped, players will be overwhelmed with shadowflame (Fyr'alath the Dreamrender) and must embark on a questline to unlock the item level 500 Legendary axe.
The axe comes with two effects (please note the placeholder values):
Rage of Fyr'alath - Unleash the Rage of Fyr'alath to charge towards your target and swing repeatedly, dealing 0 Shadowflame damage over 3 sec to all who would stand in your way. (Instant, 25 yd range, 2 min cooldown) Fyr'alath the Dream Render - Your attacks apply Mark of Fyr'alath, dealing 0 Shadowflame damage over 15 sec. Upon activation, Fyr'alath draws in the flames from all marks to increase its damage by 10%. Upon equipping the consumable that drops from Fyrakk, you will receive a quest and must visit a Shadowflame expert named Eadweard Dalyngrigge, located in Thaldraszus who will tell you to gather 3 components to withstand the heat so you can equip the weapon. This is very similar to the Evoker Legendary Questline.
You must get the following items obtainable from professions/crafting:
Erden's Glowspore Grip (Leatherworking) Lydiara's Binding Rune (Inscription) Shalasar's Sophic Vellum (Enchanting) However, they are to as easy to get as you may think...
To craft Erden's Dreamleaf Grip, you will need:
400 Zaralek Glowspores 3 Obsidian Cobraskin 5 Dreaming Essence 50 Mireslush Hide 1 Prototype Dreamleaf Grip To receive 1 Prototype Dreamleaf Grip, you must gather 200 Shadowed Dreamleaves from Superblooms.
The next item you will need is Lydiara's Binding Rune. This requires:
10 Shadowflame Essence 250 Cosmic Ink 50 Runed Writhebark 1 Prototype Binding Rune You must collect 50 Taut Tethercoils from Emerald Dream Rares to receive 1 Prototype Binding Rune. This isn't a 100% drop rate, so this quest may take a while to complete.
The final item is Shalasar's Sophic Vellum. Crafting it requires the following reagents:
150 Awakened Fire 100 Awakened Earth 50 Awakened Order 200 Resonant Crystal 1 Prototype Order Vellum Finally, you must gather 20 Radiant Flecks of Ash from powerful gear with Ashen Dowsing Rod. Basically, you're disenchanting Season 3 gear for quest items here. Once you've accrued 20 pieces, you will get 1 Prototype Order Vellum.
Once you have all 3 items, you can presumably wield the Legendary Axe, but nobody has obtained it yet on live servers, so there may be some additional steps and quests that we haven't covered here.
