Amber-Shaper Un'sok Encounter Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
Amber-Shaper Un'sok is the 5th boss in the Heart of Fear. A mantid alchemist corrupted by the Sha, he conducts twisted experiments, transforming players into hostile Mutated Constructs. The fight involves managing his amber-based abilities across three phases before defeating the alchemist himself.
Role-Specific Tips for Amber-Shaper Un'sok
DPS Tips
- Positioning is important on this fight, as you want to spread out enough for the Living Ambers on-death explosion, ideally keeping them close enough to each other that they can still be AoE'd down.
- Use personal defensive cooldowns when targeted by
Parasitic Growth.
- Save all major DPS cooldowns for Phase 3 to burn Amber-Shaper Un'sok down quickly.
Healer Tips
- Living Ambers will fixate on random players and can not be tanked; keep these targets alive.
Parasitic Growths damage increases as the target receives healing (including over-healing); absorbs such as
Sacred Shield do not count towards this. Don't heal these players too much, just enough to keep them alive.
- Phase 3 has a ton of raid-wide damage, rotate defensive and healer cooldowns as needed to keep the raid alive.
Tank Tips
- Living Ambers can not be tanked as they will simply fixate on a random target.
- During Phase 1 properly rotating between tanking Amber-Shaper Un'sok
and stacking
Destabilize while transformed into a Mutated Construct is a key component to the fight. Spend the time to learn how to do this properly, and be sure to always watch boss timers for the
Reshape Life cooldown.
- During Phase 2 the Amber Monstrosity will frequently stun its tank
with
Fling; be ready to taunt off the other tank during this. After the
Fling stun, taunt the Amber Monstrosity back.
Strategy for Amber-Shaper Un'sok
Amber-Shaper Un'sok is a 3 Phase encounter, where players will need to
control a variety of Amber based abilities in order to overcome this challenging
fight. The main mechanic of the encounter that players will need to handle
throughout all 3 Phases is
Reshape Life, which transforms players
temporarily transformed into Mutated Constructs, a hostile add that has
several key abilities. Players
that are transformed into the Mutated Constructs will retain full
control of their character, have their action bar replaced with 4 abilities,
and will become hostile to the raid. The Mutated Constructs also have
a unique resource called Willpower, which some abilities use as a resource, and will
also slowly deplete over time; when the Mutated Constructs Willpower reaches 0 it
will die, killing the transformed player. To prevent these deaths, the Mutated Construct
must be damaged down to 20% health, a requirement to allow the transformed
player to break free from the amber. The Mutated Constructs have the
following abilities:
Amber Strike ‒ 6-second cooldown, deals moderate damage to target, interrupts all spell casts, and applies a stack of
Destabilize. The
Destabilize debuff lasts 15-seconds, stacks infinitely, and increases the targets damage taken by 10% per stack.
Struggle for Control ‒ Costs 8 Willpower; stuns yourself for 0.5 seconds, interrupting any casts; increases damage taken by 100% for 5 seconds. This is needed whenever your Mutated Construct takes control and tries to cast
Amber Explosion.
Consume Amber ‒ "Eats" a pool of nearby
Burning Amber, generates 20 Willpower, removes the pool permanently, and increases the Mutated Construct health.
Break Free ‒ Removes the Mutated Construct transformation off of the player; can only be used when the Mutated Construct is below 20% health.
Destroy Will ‒ This is not an ability that the Mutated Constructs have. Instead, it is a buff that all enemies have during this fight, preventing a player from tanking anything while transformed into a Mutated Construct, as they will lose 40 Willpower on each melee attack.
Phase 1
Start off by having players spread at least 8-yard apart. During Phase 1
Amber-Shaper Un'sok will only target tanks with
Reshape Life every 50-seconds, turning them into Mutated Constructs; since
the Mutated Constructs can't tank due to
Destroy Will, you will
always need 1 tank not transformed. Mastering the use of the Mutated Construct
is the biggest challenge of the encounter, as applying and up-keeping the
Amber Strike debuffs on Amber-Shaper Un'sok is the key factor to
victory. There are several strategies possible to handle this, we will recommend
an ideal strategy for handling the Mutated Constructs that works well on
both Normal and Heroic difficulties; first let's look at the 2 remaining abilities
that Amber-Shaper Un'sok has.
Parasitic Growth debuffs random targets, dealing damage-over-time
every 2-seconds for 30-seconds; the damage of
Parasitic Growth
increases as the debuffed player gets healed. Absorption spells such as
Power Word: Shield do not count towards increasing
Parasitic Growths
damage-over-time, and should be used frequently. The
Parasitic Growth
targets should be healed as minimally as possible, just aiming to keep them
alive rather than keeping them full health.
Every 40-seconds Amber-Shaper Un'sok will target a random player with
Amber Scalpel, channeling a beam on them that follows them for
10-seconds. This beam deals damage 4 times per second, quickly killing anyone
that it hits; the targeted player must quickly kite the beam away from other
players. As the beam travels it will create several amber residue pools along
its travel path; these amber pools deal damage to anyone standing on them, and
some of them will spawn a Living Amber. These Living Ambers
will fixate on a random target, dealing low melee-damage to the target, and
deals small raid-wide damage every second.
Whenever a Living Amber is killed, 3 things occur. Firstly,
they will explode, dealing damage to all enemies in 8-yards; they will also
heal other Living Ambers within 8-yards for 40% of their
max health. In addition, when they die they will create a Burning Amber
at their death location, dealing damage to anyone inside the Pool; these Amber
Pools last for the rest of the fight. Players targeted by the Living Ambers
should be sure they're spread out to prevent the AoE on death from hitting
multiple players; AoE the adds down if possible, if not simply single target
any down that are in range. Controlling these adds is a large part of the
encounter.
With a strong understanding of all of the Phase 1 abilities, we'll look at the
suggested way to handle the Mutated Constructs. Players transformed by
Mutated Construct will become hostile, allowing them to attack other players
or be attacked themselves; be mindful of your targeting and be sure you don't
simply tab-target onto a player and start to attack them. The raid will want to
damage the Mutated Construct below 20% health, which enables the
transformed player to activate Break Free, freeing them from the
Mutated Construct transformation. Do not kill the Mutated Construct,
as this will also kill the transformed player. The transformed player should
enable auto-attacks and begin using
Amber Strike on Amber-Shaper Un'sok
every 6-seconds, stacking up
Destabilize as quickly as possible; our
goal for this strategy will be to apply as many stacks of
Destabilize
as possible and maintain them for the entire encounter.
Normally, players will want to leave the Mutated Construct once it
has been damaged down to 20% health by using Break Free. For our
strategy we will
be utilizing
Consume Amber, absorbing a Pool of
Burning Amber to generate 20 Willpower. This increases the time
that the Mutated Construct will live, preventing it from reaching 0
Willpower and dying. With
Reshape Life being cast every 50-seconds
on the current tank, you will need to use
Consume Amber on 1-2 Pools
of
Burning Amber to keep the Mutated Construct alive
until the next tank is transformed by
Reshape Life. Watch your
raid timers and be ready to use
Break Free and take over tanking
Amber-Shaper Un'sok right before
Reshape Life occurs. Timing
this well is important as the
Destabilize debuff on
Amber-Shaper Un'sok only lasts 15-seconds, while
Amber Strike has
a 6-second cooldown. Remember that
Break Free also costs 8 Willpower, be
sure to have enough Willpower ready to use
Break Free when needed.
With a bit of practice and coordination the tanks should be able to get this
rotation down, alternating between tanking Amber-Shaper Un'sok and using the
Mutated Constructs abilities properly. Remember to use Struggle for Control
whenever the Mutated Construct starts to cast
Amber Explosion,
or it will deal high Nature damage to the entire raid. Keep using
Amber Strike
on cooldown, as
Destabilize stacks are the key to beating this fight
in Phase 3. Once Amber-Shaper Un'sok reaches 70% health Phase 2 will
begin.
Phase 1 - Heroic
Heroic difficulty only adds 1 major change to the encounter, in that the
Living Ambers will respawn from the Burning Amber Pool
that they drop after 30-seconds. This means that you must eat enough Pools
with the Mutated Constructs
Consume Amber ability to stop
the Living Ambers from overwhelming your raid. The strategy you use
can vary, but we recommend simply having the Mutated Constructs consume
3-4 Pools each, rather than 1-2 as we recommended on Normal mode. This will allow
them to maintain
Destabilize stacks on Amber-Shaper Un'sok, while
also stopping most of the Living Ambers from respawning. Remember
that each
Burning Amber Pool that is consumed will heal the
Mutated Construct, requiring it to be damaged more to keep it under
20% health for
Break Free.
Phase 2
This is where strategies can vary greatly, as there are several different ways
to handle this Phase. We will recommend the strategy we believe has the highest
chance to succeed, which will play around stacking
Destabilize
as much as possible on Amber-Shaper Un'sok, making Phase 3 very easy.
Amber-Shaper Un'sok retains all of his abilities from Phase 1 (
Amber Scalpel,
Parasitic Growth, Living Ambers, and
Reshape Life),
with
Reshape Life now targeting a random player rather than the
tank. At the start of Phase 2 Amber-Shaper Un'sok will gain
Amber Carapace,
reducing his damage taken by 99%; at the same time He will also create
a Amber Monstrosity, a large add similar to the Mutated Constructs.
Phase 2 will last as long as the Amber Monstrosity remains alive. The
Amber Monstrosity has the following abilities:
Massive Stomp ‒ 20-second cooldown, 1.5 second cast time. Deals high Physical damage to all enemies within 15-yards and knocks them back; can be avoided by running away during the cast.
Amber Explosion ‒ 50-second cooldown. Identical to the Mutated Constructs
Amber Explosion, this one simply deals much higher damage; can only be interrupted by a Mutated Constructs
Amber Strike ability.
Fling ‒ 40-second cooldown. The Amber Monstrosity throws the current tank at another random enemy, dealing moderate Physical damage and stunning all players within 8-yards.
One tank will need to tank both Amber-Shaper Un'sok and the
Amber Monstrosity early on, until Reshape Life is cast
again on a random raid member. Ranged players should spread out, being sure to
stay at least 15-yards away from the Amber Monstrosity to avoid being
hit by
Massive Stomp; melee players can avoid this by quickly
moving away from the Amber Monstrosity during the
Massive Stomp
cast. When the Amber Monstrosity uses
Fling on the
current tank, have the other tank temporarily
Taunt the Amber Monstrosity
until the stun wears off. This is not required, but helps reduce damage taken as
the tank will be stunned for 3 seconds, and allows the mobs to remain stacked
together to maximum damage.
The Amber Monstrositys main threat is Amber Explosion,
which it will attempt to cast every 50-seconds. Similar to the Mutated Constructs
Amber Explosion, this deals fatal Nature damage to the entire raid
if the cast completes. Whoever is transformed into a Mutated Construct
is able to interrupt
Amber Explosion with
Amber Strike,
and must be sure to keep
Amber Strike off cooldown for this. Watch your
boss timers and be mindful of
Amber Explosions timer, the
Destabilize debuff time remaining on Amber-Shaper Un'sok, and the
cooldown of
Amber Strike. The goal here is to refresh
Destabilize
on Amber-Shaper Un'sok until
Amber Explosion is about 6
seconds away, then wait until the Amber Monstrosity starts to cast
Amber Explosion before interrupting it with
Amber Strike.
We recommend having 1 tank assigned to tanking both Amber-Shaper Un'sok
as well as the Amber Monstrosity at the start of Phase 2, using personal
defensive cooldowns to survive; if this tank gets hit by Fling,
use external defensive cooldowns on them to keep them alive. The 2nd tank
should continue to operate the Mutated Construct, keeping the
Destabilize stacks up on Amber-Shaper Un'sok until the next cast
of
Reshape Life goes out, which now targets non-tank players. The
next Mutated Construct target (ideally a non-healer), should then take
over refreshing the stacks of
Destabilize on Amber-Shaper Un'sok,
being ready to interrupt the
Amber Explosion whenever the
Amber Monstrosity attempts to cast it.
We recommend that the first non-tank player turned into a
Mutated Construct stays in this form by eating several
( Consume Amber 3-4 or more)
Burning Amber
Pools, restoring Willpower as it depletes. The next player targeted by
Reshape Life should mimic this behaviour, remaining transformed into
the Mutated Construct for essentially the rest of the encounter, stacking
Destabilize on Amber-Shaper Un'sok every 6-seconds. Any additional
Mutated Constructs after the first 2 should be damaged down to 20%
health, where the players can free themselves with
Break Free when their
Willpower gets low. Make sure only 1 player uses
Amber Strike to
interrupt the Amber Monstrositys
Amber Explosion, as to
not waste stacks of
Destabilize.
This strategy makes for a somewhat slower Phase 2, as the Amber Monstrosity
will take longer to die since it is not getting stacks of Destabilize.
The trade-off is well worth it however, as Phase 3 proves to be the biggest challenge
of the encounter and this strategy trivializes Phase 3 entirely, with it being
possible to end the fight within seconds of entering Phase 3! Phase 2 will end
once the Amber Monstrosity dies; Amber-Shaper Un'sok will remove
Amber Carapace from himself and enters Phase 3.
Phase 3
Once the Amber Monstrosity dies Amber-Shaper Un'sok will run to
the center of the room and channel for 4-seconds, gaining the
Concentrated Mutation
buff for the rest of the fight, increasing His damage dealt and attack speed
by 50%. He will continue to use
Reshape Life, now using it
every 15-seconds, and keeps using
Parasitic Growth as well;
Amber Scalpel will not be used during Phase 3. In addition to His
previous abilities, Amber-Shaper Un'sok will use
Volatile Amber,
dealing damage to random targets (2 players on 10-man, 5 on 25-man); this will
heal any Mutated Constructs for 20% of their health.
Stack together on Amber-Shaper Un'sok this Phase to significantly help
with healing; you should rotate 1-2 defensive cooldowns here non-stop to help
reduce the raids damage taken. Players debuffed by Parasitic Growth
should consider running out of the group, as the damage
Parasitic Growth
deals increases as you are healed, including over-healing. In this Phase you
can simply ignore all Mutated Constructs and should simply focus on
killing Amber-Shaper Un'sok, stacking up
Destabilize as much as
possible. Use all major DPS cooldowns here, such as
Bloodlust, and
finish Amber-Shaper Un'sok off. If you executed the Mutated Constructs
rotation properly during Phases 1 and 2, you should be entering Phase 3 with
50 or more stacks
of
Destabilize on Amber-Shaper Un'sok, making Phase 3 last around
40-50 seconds only. With
Volatile Amber healing the
Mutated Constructs if they are hit, we do not recommend attacking them
any longer, as the Phase is far too short to justify this; the boss will die
before the transformed players do.
Phase 3 - Heroic
The only change to Phase 3 on Heroic difficulty is Amber Globule; Amber-Shaper Un'sok will create 2 Amber Globules every 30-seconds, which fixate on a random raid member and chase them. If the Amber Globule reaches its target, they will explode, killing all players within 30-yards. If the 2 players targeted by Amber Globules cross path and force the 2 adds to touch each other however, they will both despawn harmlessly. The 2 players should meet together in a location outside of the raid and cross paths, allowing the Amber Globules to be kited into each other. You can also choose to simply kite this add around for the remainder of the phase, as it will not last long.
