Feng the Accursed Encounter Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
Feng the Accursed is the second boss found in the Mogu'Shan Vaults. A former Mogu emperor cursed to eternally guard the vaults, Feng challenges players across a three-phase battle, attempting to overwhelm them with an army of summoned spirits and cursed, ancient weapons.
Role-Specific Tips for Feng the Accursed
DPS Tips
- Positioning is crucial here, know where you are suppose to be at all times for each phase, and prioritize movement first before DPSing the boss!
- Use any personal defensive cooldowns to help the healers out whenever there is raid-wide damage occurring.
Healer Tips
- Tanks have a ton of personal responsibilities here and can easily take extra, avoidable, damage; be ready to use external cooldowns as needed to help keep them alive in case they mess something up.
- Coordinate raid-wide defensive cooldowns to survive the
Draw Flame,
Arcane Velocity, and any other abilities that can't be avoided with
Nullification Barrier.
Tank Tips
- Throughout all 4 Phases, Tanks will need to constantly swap due to the stacking
debuffs
Arcane Shock,
Flaming Spear,
Shadowburn, and
Lightning Lash.
- This fight has a ton of positioning requirements and constantly movement, adding a ton of pressure onto the tanks; be sure to know exactly where you are positioning the boss beforehand as you can easily become overwhelmed here.
- Become accustomed to the special action abilities you gain during this fight
(
Nullification Barrier and
Shroud of Reversal), as properly using these spells is a requirement to defeating this encounter.
Strategy for Feng the Accursed
Feng the Accursed is the second encounter in the Mogu'Shan Vaults,
consisting of 4 phases. Across all 4 phases Feng the Accursed will
frequently use
Spirit Bolt, dealing moderate Shadow damage to up
to 8 random players.
The area Feng the Accursed resides in has 4 "Spirit Weapons" around the
area, along with 2 crystals that can be interacted with by the tanks to gain one
of two special abilities required to beat this encounter. Shortly after being
engaged, and at every 25% health break point (33% on normal difficulty),
Feng the Accursed will pick up the nearest Spirit Weapon. Each time He
grabs a new Spirit Weapon, Feng the Accursed will gain a stack of
Strength of Spirit, increasing his damage dealt by 5% per stack.
Because of the stacking damage buff you will want to deal with the most
difficult weapons first by positioning Feng the Accursed near them, leaving
the easier weapons towards the end of the fight, when Feng the Accursed
has the most stacks of
Strength of Spirit.
The 2 floating crystals can be interacted with by your tanks, granting a
special ability for this encounter only. The right crystal should be used by
your main-tank, granting them the Nullification Barrier spell;
this 25-second cooldown spell can be channeled for 6-seconds to entirely
nullify all harmful magical effects on players inside the barrier. It is
important to note that
Nullification Barrier is a channeled
spell, requiring the tank to stand in place while channeling.
The second crystal should be used by the off-tank to gain the
Shroud of Reversal spell. The off-tank should use this spell on
players targeted directly by Feng the Accursed, as this will activate a
temporary spell for them, allowing them to re-direct some of
Feng the Accurseds powerful spells back at him for some free damage.
This ability must be timed properly in the final phase of the fight to prevent
a wipe.
Start the fight off by dragging Feng the Accursed on-top of the Staff,
causing him to pick it up shortly after entering combat; once He has grabbed the
staff, position him directly in the center of the room. While Feng the Accursed
is wielding the Staff players must spread out around the room as He will
periodically target 2 players with
Arcane Resonance, causing them
to deal Arcane damage to nearby allies (deals increased damage for each ally hit).
Tanks will need to deal with a stacking damage-over-time,
Arcane Shock,
which requires a tank swap every 2 stacks to prevent it from stacking too high.
The main threat of the Spirit of the Staff is the last ability Feng the Accursed
will use during this phase is Arcane Velocity, dealing damage to
all players based on how far away they are from Feng the Accursed
himself. To counter this and prevent players from dying to the massive
raid-wide damage, we will want to have all players stack up on top of
Feng the Accursed whenever
Arcane Velocity is being channeled.
Here the main-tank should use
Nullification Barrier (if available)
to stop all damage for 6 seconds; if
Nullification Barrier is
unavailable, simply use 3-4 raid-wide defensive cooldowns to mitigate the raids
damage taken greatly. Players with
Arcane Resonance should avoid
stacking here, but remain as close to Feng the Accursed as possible, to
avoid killing other players. Note that when
Nullification Barrier
is active players with
Arcane Resonance can move into the
barrier to have the debuff removed. Lastly, have the raid quickly spread out
right before the
Arcane Velocity channel ends, as
Feng the Accursed will almost always instantly use
Arcane Resonance
right after, instantly causing a wipe if you are still stacked after the
channel ends.
At 75% health (66% on normal difficulty), Feng the Accursed
will grab the nearest weapon, entering Phase 2; you will want him to grab the
Spear, requiring you to drag him near the Spear as he reaches this health
threshold. Have the Ranged DPS and Healers stack up in the center of the room,
while the Melee DPS stack together behind the boss, leaving the area where the
Staff was previously open and clear. Tanks will need to deal with a stacking
damage-over-time,
Flaming Spear, which requires a tank swap every 2
stacks to prevent it from stacking too high.
The main mechanic of this phase is the Wildfire Spark debuff placed
on random players; this debuff causes the target to create a large patch of
fire at their location after 5 seconds. Players with this debuff must quickly
relocate to a designated "Fire Drop" spot (in this example we are using the
location that the Staff was originally found) before the debuff expires. The
patches of fire will slowly expand outwards, dealing heavy Fire damage to anyone
in the area. For this reason, you will want to drop the flame patches off as far
back, away from the raid, as you possibly can before returning to your regular
position.
Every 30 seconds Feng the Accursed will use Draw Flame,
drawing all of the patches of flames to travel directly to the boss, dealing
Fire damage to anyone caught in the path. For this reason you will want to position
as shown in the picture above, with no players (especially Melee DPS) standing
in the fires possible pathing. For each patch of fire that Feng the Accursed
consumes, he will deal raid-wide Fire damage to all enemies every 3 seconds. These
stacks will quickly fall off, but you will need to use a couple raid-wide
defensive cooldowns to survive the initial damage output. Additionally, your
main-tank can (and should) use
Nullification Barrier whenever
Feng the Accursed uses
Draw Flame, placing the barrier between
the patches of flames and Feng himself; this will cause the fire patches to
run into the
Nullification Barrier and "fizzle" out, completing
removing them and preventing Feng the Accursed from gaining any buff.
On Heroic Difficulty Feng the Accursed will have an additional Phase here,
in which he will use the Spirit Shield; be sure to position him near the Shield
when he is close to reaching 50% health to make sure he grabs it next.
Tanks will need to deal with a stacking damage-over-time,
Shadowburn,
which requires a tank swap every 2 stacks to prevent it from stacking too high.
Almost immediately after equipping the Shield Feng the Accursed will use
Siphoning Shield, throwing the Shield at a random location, creating
a purple pool of dark energy and spawning in 10 fragments of players souls in.
These Soul Fragments are tethered to the Shield and will slowly
move towards it, healing Feng the Accursed for 5% of his health
for each soul that reaches the Shield.
Whenever Siphoning Shield goes out the raid must quickly move
as far away from the Shields location as possible, spawning the 10
Soul Fragments far away, allowing your DPS more time to AoE them
down. Have the raid stack together during this phase and use cooldowns such as
Gorefiend's Grasp and
Binding Shot to gather and crowd control
the adds, giving your DPS as much time as possible to AoE them down before they
are allowed to reach the Shield. The main-tank can once again utilize
Nullification Barrier here by using it (when available) on top
of the Shields landing location. Using
Nullification Barrier on
top of the Shield will cause it to immediately despawn, entirely preventing the
Soul Fragments from even spawning.
At 25% health (33% on normal difficulty), Feng the Accursed
will grab the last weapon, which in this case will be the Fists of the Spirit.
Unlike previous weapons, you will want to start this phase off by dragging
Feng the Accursed as far away from the Fists as possible, causing him to
need to run across the entire room to reach his new weapon; this simply gives you
a few additional seconds of "free" DPS before the mechanics begin. Tanks will need
to deal with a stacking damage-over-time,
Lightning Lash,
which requires a tank swap every 2 stacks to prevent it from stacking too high.
Position the raid as shown in the picture above, with Feng the Accursed
facing the middle of the room, and the entire raid behind the boss except for a
single Ranged DPS (ideally a
Hunter as they lose no DPS while moving).
Frequently during this final phase Feng the Accursed will cast
Lightning Fists, sending out 3 waves of Lighting in a fork
pattern in front of himself. These Lightning shockwaves deal high Nature damage
to anyone they hit and stun the targets for a short duration. With the boss and
raid positioned as shown on the image above, the only player who should be hit
by the
Lightning Fists shockwaves is the 1 Ranged DPS who is standing
in the center of the room. The off-tank should channel
Shroud of Reversal
on this Ranged DPS before they run into one of the shockwaves; doing this will
allow the off-tank to then use
Lightning Fists on the boss himself,
dealing high damage and briefly stunning him. Your off-tank will need to constantly
be using
Shroud of Reversal on the Ranged DPS and be ready interrupt
Epicenter casts by stunning Feng the Accursed whenever he starts
to cast it. If this cast is not interrupted, the main-tank should use
Nullification Barrier to prevent the damage as
Epicenter
deals increased damage to closer you are to Feng the Accursed. If
neither
Nullification Barrier or
Shroud of Reversal\
are available for
Epicenter use as many raid-wide defensive cooldowns
as possible to survive this damage and finish the fight.
