1. Heroes Gul'dan Works Well With

In this section, we will look at the heroes that work particularly well with Gul'dan

1.1. Malfurion

Malfurion Portrait Malfurion is a phenomenal ally for Gul'dan. Life Tap Icon Life Tap leaves Gul'dan in constant need of Health which Malfurion is readily able to supply via Regrowth Icon Regrowth. Additionally. Malfurion can help alleviate the amount of times Gul'an will require Life Tap by providing Mana directly to him with Innervate Icon Innervate. Gul'dan's unique interaction between Health and Mana makes Innervate twice as beneficial to him and can be a vital asset in Gul'dan's management of resources. Malfurion's Entangling Roots Icon Entangling Roots can also give Gul'dan some nice peel as well as lock down enemies under the effects of Drain Life Icon Drain Life.

1.2. Brightwing

Brightwing Portrait The passive healing provided by Brightwing's Soothing Mist Icon Soothing Mist is great at keeping Gul'dan nice and healthy as he is forced to draw Mana using Life Tap Icon Life Tap. Brightwing is also able to cast Polymorph Icon Polymorph to counter a mobile Hero who may be attempting to dive Gul'dan because of his lack of escape. Since Gul'dan will often end up being split from his allies to waveclear, Brightwing can provide him with backup using Phase Shift Icon Phase Shift at a moment's notice should he run into a tight spot. If Gul'dan happens to be caught out, Emerald Wind Icon Emerald Wind can be used to disengage the enemy team.

1.3. Uther

Uther Portrait Just like with Malfurion and Brightwing, the healing that Uther provides Gul'dan is what makes him a great teammate choice. Uther can put out lots of healing very fast through Holy Light Icon Holy Light and Holy Radiance Icon Holy Radiance. Utility is also thrown in the mix with Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice, which can be used to help Gul'dan out when up against melee Heroes. Uther's strongest ability,Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield can be used to not only prevent Gul'dan from imminent death, but allows him to channel an entire cast of Drain Life Icon Drain Life uninterrupted. This interaction can easily turn the tide of a seemingly lost teamfight or skirmish.

1.4. Chen

Chen Portrait Gul'dan's squishier nature and lack of any gap-closers or escapes leaves him needing a very strong frontline for protection. Chen is an incredibly distracting Hero who excels and drawing attention to himself when confronted by the enemy team. Fortifying Brew Icon Fortifying Brew causes Chen to be incredibly difficult to take down, and many opponents will foolishly try to focus on him while his shields are active. This buys ample time for Gul'dan to rain down a volley of devastating abilities down on his enemies from the backline. Keg Smash Icon Keg Smash can be used as a great form of peel, and Flying Kick Icon Flying Kick will allow Chen to come right to the aid of Gul'dan should he become focused. Horrify Icon Horrify can be used to split apart and isolate an enemy Hero from their team while Wandering Keg Icon Wandering Keg can help to guarantee they won't be getting back to them.

2. Heroes Gul'dan Is Countered By

In this section, we will look at the heroes that counter Gul'dan particularly well.

2.1. Illidan

Illidan Portrait Illidan is by far one of the most difficult Heroes for Gul'dan to take on. His insanely high mobility through Dive Icon Dive and Sweeping Strike Icon Sweeping Strike makes landing both Fel Flame Icon Fel Flame and Corruption Icon Corruption quite troublesome. Gul'dan also has zero means to escape Illidan aside from having to use Horrify Icon Horrify or Demonic Circle Icon Demonic Circle which are both on longer cooldowns. Both of Illidans Level 10 talent abilities (Metamorphosis Icon Metamorphosis and The Hunt Icon The Hunt) work very well against Gul'dan, as they provide him even more means to sticking to Gul'dan.

2.1.1. How To Play Against Illidan

Illidan's play-style revolves completely around diving his opponents, particularly those like Gul'dan who have no reliable way to escape. Survival against Illidan is all about positioning and teamwork. Try to encourage allies to play Heroes who work well with Gul'dan and can provide him with sufficient peel. Blinds work incredibly well against Illidan since a large portion of his damage is dependent on Basic Attacks. Gul'dan should not be afraid to use Horrify Icon Horrify to disengage Illidan, but make sure that the fear will send Illidan away from Gul'dan and not towards him. If Illidan is just too much for Gul'dan to handle he may consider choosing Demonic Circle Icon Demonic Circle as his level 20 talents to provide him a much needed escape when dove on.

2.2. Greymane

Greymane Portrait Greymane is a great pick against Gul'dan. He is able to trade very well from a safe distance with Basic Attacks and Gilnean Cocktail Icon Gilnean Cocktail in Human Form and then attempt to finish off Gul'dan in Worgen Form with Razor Swipe Icon Razor Swipe and Go for the Throat Icon Go for the Throat. He is also quite mobile making skillshots more difficult to connect on him. When Greymane does get close enough for Gul'dan to use Drain Life Icon Drain Life on him, he can easily flee from the cast range by activating Disengage Icon Disengage.

2.2.1. How To Play Against Greymane

When playing Gul'dan against Greymane one of the most important things to keep in mind is his insanely high burst damage. Gul'dan should be very cautious when using Life Tap Icon Life Tap in close proximity to Greymane, as the constant decrease in Health can be easily capitalized. Gul'dan's survival is all about his positioning. Unlike Illidan, Greymane really only has one shot at diving on Gul'dan every so often. As long as Gul'dan can survive these sporadic attacks, he should be fine. Uther is a great counter to Greymane, as Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield can be used to negate all of his burst damage and keep Gul'dan alive long enough for allow his allies to burst down the over-extended Greymane.

2.3. Kerrigan

Kerrigan Portrait Even with good positioning, Kerrigan always seems to find a way to end up on top of her prey. Ravage Icon Ravage talented with Eviscerate Icon Eviscerate provides Kerrigan with a reliable means to always reach Gul'dan, even when he is buried deep within the backline. Aside from juking, Gul'dan has no way to dodge her Primal Grasp Icon Primal Grasp/Impaling Blades Icon Impaling Blades combo, and Assimilation Icon Assimilation and Maelstrom Icon Maelstrom make her incredibly difficult to take down once she has initiated.

2.3.1. How To Play Against Kerrigan

Just like with Greymane, Gul'dan should have a much easier time fighting Kerrigan if he is able to survived her initial burst damage and ability combo. Try not to cast Drain Life Icon Drain Life on Kerrigan after she has leapt in using Ravage Icon Ravage. The channeling effect of Drain Life will make Gul'dan an easy target for Impaling Blades Icon Impaling Blades, and will end up wasting the ability. Most often Supports with Cleanse Icon Cleanse work beautifully in helping to shut down the strength of Kerrigan's single target damage and crowd-control. Heroes with Cleanse include Brightwing, Kharazim, Li Li, Lt. Morales, Malfurion, Rehgar, and Uther. If for whatever reason Cleanse is not available, Gul'dan should not be afraid to use Horrify Icon Horrify or Demonic Circle Icon Demonic Circle to peel away from Kerrigan after she initiates. Kerrigan's greatest weakness is her inability to disengage from a fight once she has committed, so be ready to burst her down once Gul'dan is safe and has survived her opening combo.
