2. General Zagara Strategy

Unlike most Heroes, Zagara is a powerful Hero at all points of the game. Her early laning can cripple the enemy Heroes and her late game damage is massive. When laning, play aggressively by using Infested Drop Icon Infested Drop whenever it is available to push the lane and harass enemy Heroes. Use Hunter Killer Icon Hunter Killer whenever an enemy Hero is within range, but play safely when it is not available, as it is your main source of damage. If you have full Mana, you can use Baneling Barrage Icon Baneling Barrage to clear the minion wave. Be sure to use it so that all 7 minions are hit (stand within the minion wave). Most importantly, always use Creep Tumor Icon Creep Tumor to spread Creep, placing it in bushes and other locations that AoE abilities would not hit them, unless used deliberately.

Pushing hard will often leave you Mana starved, so actively use the Well early, rather than later. Rapid Incubation will essentially solve your Mana problems, if you are not spamming all of your abilities as soon as they come off cooldown. If you get Tumor Clutch and Endless Creep Icon Endless Creep, you will want to spend more time placing Creep Tumors (instead of pushing) than you would otherwise. You never want to push a lane unless you have a full Creep spread to spot potential ganks, as you have very low mobility.

3. When Not Team Fighting

The most important and difficult aspect of Heroes of the Storm is performance in team fights, since this is often where games are decided. That said, team fights usually take up a relatively short amount of time, with the rest of the game being spent performing other tasks. In this section, we will walk you through what you should be doing outside of team fights as Zagara.

In order of priority, you should:

  • Take map objectives;
  • Hold or clear a lane that no one else on your team is in;
  • Place Creep Tumor Icon Creep Tumors, especially if you have Tumor Clutch and Endless Creep Icon Endless Creep;
  • Take Mercenary Camps (you can solo the Ogre (Easy) Camp) on your side of the map;
  • Push whatever lane your allies are already pushing the hardest.

Map objectives almost always have the largest impact on the game. If you ignore these, then not only do you miss out on objectives that the enemy takes, but the enemy team also benefits from these objectives. On some maps, team fighting is synonymous with taking objectives, like on Sky Temple or Dragon Shire, but Garden of Terror, for example, does not always promote fights between both teams. The Boss Mercenary Camp on some maps constitutes a map objective. However, sometimes it is best to give up a map objective and to simply keep pushing, but the only time you might want to consider doing this is if it is obvious that you will be unable to contest the objective.

Your goal outside of team fights is to gain as much of an advantage over your enemy as possible, and in Heroes of the Storm, this means soaking XP from minions. However, as Zagara, you will always want to be spreading Creep with Creep Tumors. You will generally just want to place them along the way, but if you have three charges it can be a good idea to place them more aggressively. If there is an upcoming map objective, you may even want to spread Creep in the surrounding area at the expense of losing XP from minions or capturing Mercenary Camps. With the exception of this particular case (spreading Creep for map objectives), you should never leave a lane without anyone to soak the XP, especially if it is just to take a Mercenary Camp.

Once all of your lanes are being soaked, take Mercenary Camps. They provide a small amount of XP and a significant amount lane pressure. Taking the Mercenary Camps on the enemy's side of the map is risky, and it should only be done if you can be sure they will not or cannot contest. Zagara is a great Hero to capture Mercenary Camps with and she can solo them effectively. Baneling Barrage Icon Baneling Barrage can damage every mercenary and Infested Drop Icon Infested Drop can tank the attacks from the Mercenaries for you. You can cast Hunter Killer Icon Hunter Killer to help you clear the Knights (Hard) Camp, but it is more effective at killing the Ogre (Easy) Camp.

If you have already taken all that the map has to offer, it is likely that most, if not all of the lanes are pushing in the direction of your enemy. This pressure should be capitalised on. Push a lane with your allies to destroy the enemies' base.

4. Team Fighting and Ability Usage

As Zagara, you should try to only fight in areas that you have covered in Creep, but at the very least, you will want to place Creep Tumor Icon Creep Tumors behind you, providing an escape route via the increased movement speed. Always stay in the back of a team fight, even if it means that an enemy Hero might escape death, as it is almost never worth dying yourself to secure a kill. Use Infested Drop Icon Infested Drop whenever it is available and do your best to hit enemy Heroes with it. Hunter Killer Icon Hunter Killer is about the same range as your Basic Attacks, so you should never be closer to the enemy Heroes than that. You will generally want to use Hunter Killer on squishy assassins or supports but the extremely high sustained damage of Hunter Killer can make it an effective tank-killing ability. You want to always be using Basic Attacks whenever you can, especially if you have Envenomed Spines Icon Envenomed Spines

During team fights, you want to always be looking for a potential opportunity to land a multi-Hero Devouring Maw Icon Devouring Maw. Devouring Maw has quite a long range, so as long as you are near a team fight, you should be able to land it should the opportunity arise. Also look for opportunities to use it in choke-points, as it can also double as a Force Wall Icon Force Wall, trapping enemy Heroes that are not devoured. However, just because you can land a dream Devouring Maw, does not mean you should. Devouring Maw's biggest strength is allowing your teammates to setup for a combo. If you have no nearby allies, then even a five-man Maw will not be very effective. Follow-up Devouring Maw with a combination of Infested Drop and Baneling Barrage Icon Baneling Barrage for AoE damage.

5. Summary of Tips and Tricks

  • Always place Creep Tumor Icon Creep Tumors whenever they are available. Place them in bushes, popular ganking paths, and around map objectives. Do not place them in spots where casual AoE damage will destroy them.
  • Place Creep Tumor Icon Creep Tumors behind you when pushing or team fighting, so that you can use the Creep as an escape route.
  • Use Infested Drop Icon Infested Drop to tank Mercenary Camps, drain ammo from structures, provide vision, and interrupt channeling of objectives (like Tributes).
  • Patiently wait for the right opportunity to use Devouring Maw Icon Devouring Maw, as rushing it will usually result in it missing. Try to only use Devouring Maw with allies nearby, so that they can follow-up. It can also be used as a wall, similar to Force Wall Icon Force Wall.
  • Use Infested Drop Icon Infested Drop and Baneling Barrage Icon Baneling Barrage on enemies exiting Devouring Maw Icon Devouring Maw.
  • Zagara is extremely dominant in lane, play aggressively (as long as you have Creep Tumor Icon Creep Tumors placed to avoid ganks).
  • Place Creep Tumor Icon Creep Tumors at map objectives prior to them activating (around the Temples on Sky Temple or the Tributes on Cursed Hollow).
  • Zagara is very Mana reliant and using your abilities too much will leave you with no Mana. Use Wells and Rapid Incubation whenever possible. Be sure to conserve your Mana before map objectives activate.
