1. Artifact Progression

Artifact Progression

The Fangs of Ashamane have a number of different directions you can branch off from when you gain your first trait, Icon Shredder Fangs, allowing for some flexible decisions. However, the extreme power of some specific traits deep in one path choice limits them, and as such there is only one path you can realistically take to optimise your output.

2. Artifact Ability

The Feral Artifact opens with the active ability, Icon Ashamane's Frenzy, which deals high Physical damage over 3 seconds, and then high Bleed damage over 6 seconds. It has no cost, generates 3 Combo Points, and a 75-second cooldown. This is a great burst tool in single target, and works very well with some of the short duration buffs such as Tiger's Fury Icon Tiger's Fury and Bloodtalons Icon Bloodtalons.

2.1. Recommended Path

The goal of the path is to reach Icon Razor Fangs and Icon Ashamane's Bite as quickly as possible, as these present over half of the total benefit of the artifact.

Whilst this path does forego some of the multi target oriented traits until later, the enormous boost to single target is more than worth the trade off.

  1. Icon Ashamane's Frenzy
  2. Icon Shredder Fangs
  3. Icon Tear the Flesh
  4. Icon Protection of Ashamane
  5. Icon Attuned to Nature
  6. Icon Ashamane's Energy
  7. Icon Razor Fangs
  8. Icon Scent of Blood
  9. Icon Powerful Bite
  10. Icon Ashamane's Bite
  11. Icon Open Wounds
  12. Icon Feral Instinct
  13. Icon Shadow Thrash
  14. Icon Feral Power
  15. Icon Sharpened Claws
  16. Icon Honed Instincts
  17. Icon Hardened Roots
  18. Icon Fangs of the First

This path aims to reach Icon Ashamane's Bite before the release of Emerald Nightmare and Mythic+, which is a huge boost. After that, it grabs other traits in descending order of power, whilst avoiding the weakest traits such as Icon Hardened Roots until the end.

3. Relic Choice

Unlike many other specs, Item Level is not the deciding factor on your Feral Relics. This is largely tied to poor weapon damage scaling, coupled with very high values for the Feral trait bonuses. As an example, a Icon Tear the Flesh Relic can potentially be worth a staggering 11 weapon Item Levels worth of stats depending on the trait it is competing against. I will list trait powers below. All of these values are weighted against a trait with no DPS effect.

3.1. 1: Tear the Flesh

Icon Tear the Flesh increases the damage of Rake Icon Rake, and is the highest priority pick in single target. This can be worth up to 11 weapon item levels at higher gear, so should be prioritised.

3.2. 2: Razor Fangs/Ashamanes Energy/Feral Power

Despite the 7.1.5 reduction, Icon Razor Fangs is still worth up to 8 weapon item levels, and Icon Ashamane's Energy and Icon Feral Power are worth up to 7. These are good alternatives if you do not have access to Icon Tear the Flesh.

3.3. 3: Feral Instinct

Lastly, Feral Instinct Icon Feral Instinct can be worth up to 6 weapon item levels, and is the last powerful trait available to Feral.

3.4. 4: AoE Relics

One additional Relic merits a mention, being Icon Sharpened Claws. In large scale multi-target situations, the effect of this relic on Swipe Icon Swipe is valuable, and worth considering. In low target cleave, both DoT relics in Icon Razor Fangs and Icon Tear the Flesh however take the top spots.
