This seasonal event returns with a new mission, a bunch of new skins and cosmetic items and hero tweaks!

A huge patch (~14 GB) is now available to download for all Overwatch players. The Overwatch Archives event is live and you can experience moments from Overwatch's history. The Uprising brawl is obviously making a return with some brand new skins, but there's also a new mission called Retribution, which will show players more about how Talon operates. The event will last until April 30.

In Retribution, you can explore the new map, Rialto, situated in Venice. Rialto will be available as a PvP map at a later date. According to PCGamesN, the map will hit the PTR in a week or two and it will go live after Overwatch archives finishes. PvP Rialto will have some differences compared to the PvE one you'll be able to experience now.

If you want to check out all the new skins and collectibles, u/Yernemm has compiled a nice list over here.

The patch also contains the much anticipated buffs to Mei and Reaper; you can read Mournflakes' expert opinion on these changes here. The Avoid as Teammate option is available, too. Lastly, lots of bugs have been fixed - which is always good!

Here are the patch notes:

PATCH HIGHLIGHTS

New Seasonal Event: Overwatch Archives 2018

Experience pivotal moments from history in Overwatch Archives. Join a team of four heroes and participate in cooperative, story-driven missions that give a new perspective on the era before the fall of Overwatch.

This year, take command of the agents of Blackwatch and face off against Talon in an exciting new brawl, Retribution. Players also get a second chance to stop an omnic insurrection as last year’s Uprising mission returns for a rematch. You’ll earn Archives Loot Boxes as you play, unlocking new cosmetics based on moments from Overwatch’s past including legendary skins like Blackwatch Moira, Scion Hanzo, Soldier: 24 Reaper, Talon Doomfist, Specimen 28 Winston, and more.

GENERAL UPDATES

General

  • Players can choose to “Avoid as Teammate” with a dropdown menu in the Career Profile

Developer Comments: The addition of the “Avoid as Teammate” option gives players the ability to craft their online gameplay experience. Up to two players can be selected with this feature. If you use the “Avoid as Teammate” option on a player, the matchmaker will no longer place you on a team with the avoided player for one week. To learn more about this feature, click here.

[PS4/XB1] Voice Chat Mode

  • An option to toggle Voice Chat Mode has been added under Options > Sound

Report Menu

  • The “Poor Teamwork” dropdown menu option has been removed

  • The “Griefing” dropdown menu option has been renamed “Gameplay Sabotage”

Developer Comments: Due to player confusion about the most appropriate category to report players for poor or toxic gameplay, we are removing the Poor Teamwork option from the reporting system. Players should instead use the Gameplay Sabotage option when players actively harass or disrupt their own team with game mechanics or their actions. Players should not be reported simply for performing poorly, since everyone occasionally has a bad game.

Heroes

  • Sombra’s “Enemies Hacked” commendation card now also displays her offensive assists

  • Brigitte’s Golden Weapon variant will now also give her a golden shield

  • Changed Mercy’s Valkyrie voice line

HERO UPDATES

Brigitte

Barrier Shield

  • An option to “Toggle Barrier” has been added under Options > Controls > Brigitte

D.Va

Micro Missiles

  • Explosive damage reduced from 6 to 4

Boosters

  • Impact damage reduced from 25 to 10

Developer Comments: D.Va’s burst potential is a bit too high, so we’re reducing the damage of her Micro Missiles and Boosters impact. Prior to this change, each missile dealt 3 impact damage and 6 explosive damage. We’re reducing explosive damage from 6 to 4 but leaving the impact damage the same, the net result being 21% damage reduction.

McCree

  • Added additional voice lines for Lifeguard McCree

Mei

Endothermic Blaster

  • Now pierces through enemies

Developer Comments: This change helps Mei combat multiple targets that are clumped up and makes it easier for her to keep freezing a specific target if another enemy gets in the way. This change also helps her ultimate more consistently freeze enemy targets, especially if they are near each other. Note: While her shots now pierce enemies, they still do not pierce barriers such as Reinhardt’s shield.

Reaper

Death Blossom

  • Reloads Hellfire Shotguns after use

Wraith Form

  • Move speed bonus increased from 25% to 50%

  • You can now cancel the ability by pressing the Shift or Primary Fire hotkey

Developer Comments: These changes help Reaper use Wraith Form more consistently as an escape, but they also open up new options, such as chasing down key targets.

Moira

Biotic Grasp

  • Transparency increased the closer you are to a target

Coalescence

  • Now becomes more transparent the closer its visual effects are to a player’s camera

Fade

  • Transparency increased the closer you are to a target

Developer’s Comment: Due to issues with visibility, we have made most of Moira’s visual effects fade away the closer they are to the camera. We have also made modifications to Coalescence to greatly increase the ability for foes and allies alike to see through it when facing it.

Zenyatta

Orb of Destruction

  • Secondary fire rate of fire reduced by 15%

Developer Comments: Zenyatta is meant to be able to deal a lot of damage, especially for a support, but his alternate fire burst damage was a bit too high. This change keeps the overall damage the same but lowers the DPS slightly and makes it harder to hit multiple shots at very long ranges.

What a huge update, way more than what I expected.
But so weird is no Brigitte nerf and that annoying Mei buff come from PTR.. no comment.
Plus I still can't wait to be able block infinite teammates for unlimited time. Yeah, I love my teammates most times.

Recently the game drop into with total rookie low level players what would be no problem if I'm not a platinum player (okay, I'm 90, but my stats matter, not?) who have a minimum requirements to how like to play and sometimes I just want to enjoy QP and Arcade, but this matchmaking make it totally unenjoyable. I don't know what think about this Blizz actually but pretty annoying and I'm send about it a long-long feedback and hope see something about matchmaking in upcoming patch.

Finally, one event that I like doing. They should create more PVE events like this, telling us a little bit about OW lore and stuff (not like Junkerstein, that was such a boring event ugh).

I like that this time we have Moira as a support, since she is waaaaaaay more fun than Mercy in every aspect imo.

I'm having a lot of problems with this too, I wish Blizzard and Jeff himself would do something about MM asap. It isn't just QP that is unenjoyable, Competitive and Arcade too. They say your Competitive SR doesn't matter when they are working on QP MM, but how it is fair when I have to fight against three or four masters or GMs when I'm gold/plat? Competitive is balanced on theory, but they won't do anything about smurfs... so yeah.

Here come the announced PTR notes, focusing mainly on some armor changes, going from 5 to 3 maximum damage blocked (remaining at a cap of half of the original damage). We also have another Brigitte nerf, capping the duration of Rally to 30 seconds, a nef to D.Va's Defensive Matrix and a big buff to Reaper's self-healing.
      PTR Noes, January 8 (source)
      HERO UPDATES
      General
Damage reduction from armor reduced from -5 to -3 Developer Comments: Before this change armor reduced all incoming damage by up to 5, maxing at half of the normal amount. This change reduces the damage reduction to 3, while still capping at half. This change will be mostly noticeable on heroes that fire quickly or in a burst of shots (such as shotguns), and which do more than 6 damage per shot. For example, Soldier: 76’s Heavy Pulse Rifle will now do 16 damage per shot to armor, up from 14, an increase of 15%. Armor was a bit too strong overall, especially when being healed quickly and often. This change will help more heroes fight against higher armored enemies.
      Brigitte
Rally Now has a maximum duration of 30 seconds Developer Comments: Sometimes Rally could cause a snowballing effect where it was too difficult to deal with the increased health of Brigitte’s allies before she built up another one. This change puts a cap on how long her Rally effect can last to make it a bit more manageable in those situations.
      D.Va
Defense Matrix Cooldown increased from 1 second to 2 seconds Developer Comments: This change allows D.Va’s enemies to try to play around her Defense Matrix by increasing its downtime between uses.
      Reaper
The Reaping Life steal increased from 30% to 50% of damage dealt Developer Comments: Reaper’s passive is one of the main tools he has which allow him to play aggressively when near his enemies. This change allows him to keep the pressure up as long as he can stay near his enemies enough to keep dealing damage. This change is particularly effective versus tanks, as they tend to do less damage than damage heroes, and also take more damage from his Hellfire Shotguns due to their larger hit volumes.

We have a brand new short story by Michael Chu, featuring Ana, Solider: 76 and Reaper, Cairo and a necropolis! The three of them meet while Ana is on a mission, and they all believe each other dead, but soon find out otherwise as Reaper chases Solider down and Ana steps in between them.

So, there's been a pretty long lull in the Overwatch dev's communication with the community, in terms of announcements or teases etc. However, recently Jeff Kaplan has posted on the forums about both very general plans for the future of the game and for some more close-by changes coming to the PTR as early as next week.

First off we have the PTR changes that may or may not appear next week/starting tomorrow, including a "surprise" that may well be a revision to the replay system:
      Jeff Kaplan (source)
We worked on a balance patch this week. We’re hoping to put that patch on the PTR next week. The last time I said that, it was late and everyone flipped out. So please, don’t flip out if things slip… they often do.
Also, there’s another cool little surprise coming next week. Excited!
(sorry no details at this time as changes are still in flux… the PTR will get notes when it goes out… no dev update)
Then there's a larger post from a while ago where Jeff goes into some long-term plans in response to a "we don't like developer silence" forum post. Apparently there's been a lot of exploration into new things, from game modes, features and engine tech, as well as a whole lot of top secret stuff:
      Jeff Kaplan (source)
      Hey… sorry!
We don’t like being silent… that’s not our intention. we’ve been trying to show up more on various streams (we have our creator’s residency now here at Blizzard where streamers hang out with us) plus we did a bunch of streams at Blizzcon. maybe you missed those?
We’re also in a bit of a “head’s down” mode trying to get a lot of work done. we also had a few people traveling over the thanksgiving holiday (we’re based in the US) and took advantage of the slow week to allow developers to work on whatever they wanted. the end result was pretty cool. we explored new game modes, new features and new engine tech. it was all really rough but some of the prototypes will actually turn into features someday.
I guess, mostly, we don’t have a big newsworthy thing to announce or talk about right now so we’re more focused on “getting stuff done” rather than anything else.
Roughly, this is a sample of some of what we’re working on:
–top secret stuff i’m not allowed to talk about
–hero balance (i actually think we’re in a better spot than these forums will have you believe)
–quality of life features (UI updates etc)
      –new hero prototyping and development
–new game mode prototyping (don’t expect to see these soon)
      –feature development
      –ongoing event support (skins etc.)
–more top secret stuff i’m not allowed to talk about
–top secret stuff i’m not supposed to talk about
