Heroes of the Storm PTR Patch Notes: September 17th

The latest Heroes of the Storm content patch is available for playtesting until September 24. Check out the official patch notes for details!

Fall of the King's Crest Event

Fall of the King's Crest is a new event available next week where players can complete up to four different quests to earn themed rewards. We have a new type of Loot Chests that will have a chance to contain new skins.

Garden of Terror Revamp

Blizzard also decided to change the objective on Garden of Terror to make a Cursed Hollow & Tomb of the Spider Queen hybrid out of it by removing the day/night cycle and the Garden Terror vehicle.

Hero Reworks

The patch will hit live servers next week and it's time for two Hero reworks as Brightwing and Kerrigan both received talent overhauls. The patch notes contain detailed information about all new, updated, and removed talents.

Developer Comment: Kerrigan is receiving an update to increase the tactical depth of using her abilities and increase the impact that her Talents have on her playstyle. We've reduced the range on Ravage Ravage but added a second charge so that smart Kerrigan players can use it to maneuver on the battlefield, as well as utilize a lot of her Talents to get the most out of the ability. We've added a secondary explosion to Primal GraspPrimal Grasp so that Kerrigan will want to continue to worry about her positioning after her initial engagement occurs, as well as provide the opportunity for new Talent interactions. We've also added a skillshot component to Summon UltraliskUltralisk so that the Heroic can feel like it has a big moment when it is first unleashed. Overall, Kerrigan should play mostly the same, but have increased room for mastery and playstyle specific builds.

Developer Comment: Late last year we decided that we wanted to add a fun mini-game to Brightwing utilizing her Arcane FlareArcane Flare as the focal point. As it often happens, while making the initial changes we started diving in deeper and deeper. Nearly a year later, we are excited to showcase a fully updated talent tree alongside some fundamental game-play changes to our resident Faerie Dragon. With a baseline AoE cleanse-type effect and added healing potential to her Arcane FlareArcane Flare, Brightwing should bring some new major play-making abilities to her team.

Hmm. I wonder if these new skins to Maiev, whitemane and alexstrasza are creatable with shards and able to be found in loot chests. Or are they only purchaseable with gems considering that they already have gem only skins?

There shard purchasable, but they have event tangs on em like the Halloween season skins last year, so they'll only be available till this event is over.

Craftable. Only Hero launch skins since the Alexstrasza patch are gem-only.

Wow.. I was prepared for disappointment with Kerrigan rework but this...

Her basic abilities got gutted down HARD in base damages and for a Hero who relies on comboing her abilities not just for damage but pretty much everything, this is terribad in so many ways. Only Ravage can be salvaged out of the bunch. Also, the removal of talents such as Clean KillClean KillDouble StrikeDouble StrikeAggressive DefenseAggressive Defense and the nerf to Bladed MomentumBladed Momentum adds insult to injury-such insult the offenders shoud get permabanned for being toxic.

New talents are...meh at best (only liking the quest and Chrysalis) and in no way make up for the above. Spell power isn't something she can really use, her cooldowns are rather punishing (not to mention she can easily get into mana issues). Unbridled Energy is the only one that actually looks viable in that regard imho. Jumping around like Tigger from Winnie The Pooh may appear and sound fun to try out, but Kerri isn't an initiator (like apparently they're trying to make her) and she's not Lunara either; when she goes in a bit of cc here and a small focus down there and she's a goner before you can blink. It's like they think she's a diver, but she can't just go in and expect to do something (in 1v1 scenarios maybe). Her shield generation plain sucks (worse than untalented Tyrael ally shield, that's why Aggressive Defense was a no-brainer) and even basic attacks from Heroes that aren't basic attackers can easily make it seem like it never existed, she can never expect to survive for long (matter of nanoseconds). 

It may appear I'm wearing blinkers but I'm not; I always try to be objective. I'm just genuinely and majorly disappointed by this cause Kerrigan has such potential as a character. They always say "we try to avoid to drastically change how a Hero's playstyle and feel is before the rework unless it is called for"; well, I believe it's one of those instances. Kerrigan is supposed to be the strongest psionic in the whole universe, not just some knife/stab/slasher psychomaniac, yet her whole psionic profile is at best mostly overlooked (mediocre trait, very few talents and a Heroic that plays on that and not very well). Like you've probably seen me say before, she could have for example a Heroic that temporarily gives her new abilities (so many exciting opportunities) and/or a talent that makes her attacks ranged; she shoots FRIGGIN THUNDERBOLTS from her hands, even does so in the game's opening trailer for the love of God, would've been so cool... She just doesn't feel like Kerri...

New Brighwing looks amazing, some great talent synergies there, and interesting counter options.

New Kerrigan looks ok. Granted I used to play her mostly as a jungler/solo ganker, but the rework looks interesting enough.

Very excited for the new event, only a bit disappointed because in the PTR the legendaries Alex's and Whitemane's skins don't have recolored animations to match the tints. Specially frustrating on purple or red Dragon Form with green fire AA. Can't wait to buy a Blackheart and Queen of Thorns announcer.

While she has plenty of psi abilities in her lore, they didn't choose to focus their gameplay model on that.  This is entirely reasonable IMO!  They already had half a dozen psi characters from Starcraft lined up behind her when they were creating her character.  Instead they chose to focus on her title (Queen of Blades) and the more primal leaping attack zerg style which honestly practically no other characters from Star Craft (or most other games) are going to have.  It's the same reason why Nova (who can use powerful Psi abilities in her lore as well) doesn't have any psi in her hots version.  To differentiate her from other characters.

As for the rework itself, we'll have to try her out.  Her Ravage ability got changed a great deal given all of the talents you can put on it and the number of times you can regain charges.  IMO, her viability hinges on how well that all plays out.  If you can chain Ravages well, get a squishy isolated, ect...  Then maybe she'll do okay.  Even if this flops, Blizzard does keep working on their projects.  If she needs buffs I expect she will get them.  Until I try her out though, I'm not going to write her off just yet.

Ummm, what? Abathur, Zagara, Dehaka. Zerg are very well represented through and through. Kerrigan IS NOT just another Zerg character. She is known for her terrible, awe-inspiring psionic powers. That's why everyone is afraid of her. This is why the Overmind chose her-for her great potential. She was the only known being with "a (whooping) class 12 psi signature" - that was BEFORE she went to Zerus and got infused with primal essence, becoming a hybrid (breaking the scale, unable to be measured anymore). And it is at that point in the timeline specifically that the Nexus took her in. So, her psionics were the focal point of her + her story. Kerrigan without psionics is like Zeratul without stealth, Jaina without frost magic, Muradin without his hammer & axe; ie not Kerrigan. Seeing the opening cinematics where she shoots them force lightnings and then seeing her in-game like a slasher thriller psychomaniac is like playing a demo and when playing the actual game it's nothing like that.

Creating holo decoys is pretty much a showcase of psionic power I believe; no other Ghost does that. Also, the games never focused on Nova for her psionic potential unlike Kerrigan, rather for her ability to infiltrate and her effectiveness in stealth missions and assassinations.

Like I said, hopping around endlessly may appear and sound cool and funny on paper, but when you sit down and think about it a little, it actually isn't. She isn't a tank initiator or Lunara either. Ravage will have reduced range and now you won't even have the EviscerateEviscerate option and no option to use it on allies for a possible escape either from what I know. You'll also be dependant on enemy heroes positioning and presence/proximity of minions. You are still gonna be a squishy, melee assassin with limited mobility and options and a trait that will be next to useless to save you (that's why Aggressive DefenseAggressive Defense is needed and is the go-to choice), especially with a little cc and focus. She is going to need a team built around her if she's to be relevant and even then it may not be enough.

They better revisit her and rethink their approach, if not before release, sometime in the (hopefully near) future cause this just looks like a rather big nerf and nothing more.

I know what you mean. Sadly, I don't think we will ever see a psionic Kerrigan; her gameplay is already too consolidated in the game. Blizzard would never fully rework a character where their gameplay style is changed completely. Sure, they could change Kerrigan into a completely different character (like Andariel? I don't know) and make a new Kerrigan with a focus on the psionic powers. But I highly doubt it.

Yes, and none of them have the leaping attack style that Kerrigan does.  Since they were never going to make a Zergling a hero, that style of attack is only going to come from Kerrigan, thus why they made her that way.

That doesn't really matter from a gameplay perspective.  Having her spam Psi power has her overlapping with other Psi characters they were making at the time (such as Tassadar) and any future ones to come along.  She also has a relatively unique fighting style where a "I'm a super powerful psychic shooting lightning at you" overlaps far too much gameplay with with any number of mage characters.  Going melee was a good step for gameplay diversity.  And as we've seen gameplay trumps lore when it comes to character design.

I don't know why you keep bringing up the trailer.  It also has flying Tyr and Prime Evil Diablo, neither of which were in the game at launch (and Tyr still can't fly).

Holo Decoys are not Psi.  They do have a physical presence, both able to take and deal damage.  As such they are more like the Protoss Sentry's ability to create hard-light constructs which have a physical presence as opposed to Psi Hallucinations which do not.  Nova has nothing Psi on her kit at all.  And while her character's story may be about her missions as a ghost in-game (in lore she was a massive Psi powerhouse), she has always had Psi powers in her game representations before this (including seriously "powerful" stuff like Mind Control).  That said, again, the point is, for gameplay purposes she was focused down to only a part of her abilities.

      All Quests that can lose stacks will never cause the player to fall below milestone thresholds. Pinnacle Rewards are now named Mythic Rewards to give a more Blizzard feel. So Mythic-y! The following Summoned Units now lose health each second: Demon Lieutenants, Demon Warriors, Gargantuan, Hydralisks, Roaches, Rock-It Turrets, Rush Zombies, Scarabs, Treants, Tumors, and Water Elementals. Total Health and Duration of these Summoned Units have been adjusted to compensate for this. Structures now prioritize Summoned Units when there are no remaining minions.       Players will now receive an announcement when a quest milestone is reached. This will only announce to the player who achieved the milestone. Ranges of abilities on numerous Heroes have been updated to be more consistent. This may cause certain abilities ranges to reduce or increase.       Map Updates
      General A new Fallback Tower has been added to the longer lanes on each of the following battleground maps. This new tower will die when its corresponding Fort dies: Alterac Pass, Battlefield of Eternity, Blackheart's Bay, Braxis Holdout, Cursed Hollow, Dragon Shire, Garden of Terror, Hanamura Temple, Infernal Shrines, Sky Temple, Tomb of the Spider Queen, Volskaya Foundry, and Warhead Junction. Attacks from the Core, Keeps, Forts, Fallback Towers, and Towers near Keeps will now reduce Hero armor, and the reduction has been increased from -10/-20 Armor to -20/-40 Armor. Fallback Towers have the same HP and Attack Damage as Keep Towers. Forts, Keeps, and the Core will no longer grant Allied Heroes that take damage in their radius 35 Armor for 4 seconds. The comeback system has been slightly magnified, particularly at wide level gaps. Alterac Pass Objective capture timer reduced by 5 seconds in each phase. The first phase only spawns a single defending unit. Cavalry now gain more health in the later stages of the game. Cavalry now take 60% damage from structures (up from 50%). Braxis Holdout Early objectives have lowered in health by 15%, but scaling has been increased significantly after 15 minutes. Garden of Terror Garden Terror health scaling increased. Garden Terror structure disabling plant bulb now damages itself at 10% per second (up from 6%). Infernal Shrines Early objectives have lowered in health by 15%, but scaling has been increased significantly after 15 minutes. Warhead Junction Nuke damage has been changed to flat, scaling damage. Scaling is updated when a Warhead is picked up. Nukes now deal double damage versus Forts, Keeps, and the Core. Return to Top

      Lightning Rod [W] Cooldown reduced from 13 seconds to 12 seconds. Talents
      Level 1 Dishonorable Discharge REWORK: No longer reduces CD. Bonuses are now provided at 20/45/75 hits. At 20 hits, gain 30% damage. At 45 hits, gain an additional 75% damage and reduce the cooldown by 2 seconds. Pinnacle Reward: At 75 hits, Lightning Rod provides 2 additional strikes and Stuns for 1.25s on its last strike. Frequent Flyer REWORK: Reduced attack speed bonus from 40% to 25%. Now provides 1 stack per minion and 5 stacks per Hero. At 50 stacks, gain 20 Attack Damage. At 125 stacks, gain an additional 50 Attack Damage. Pinnacle Reward: At 300 stacks, gain an additional 125 Attack Damage. Gathering Storm REWORK: Bonuses are now provided at 30/80/150 stacks, rather than incremental gains. At 30 stacks, gain 30% damage. At 80 stacks, gain an additional 50% damage. Pinnacle Reward: At 150 stacks, gain an additional 70% damage. REWORK: Lose 8 stacks on death, but can not lose milestones that have already been completed. Level 7 Charged Up Moved to be a Level 13 Talent. No longer provides additional hits, but instead provides cooldown refresh on Hero takedowns. Level 13 Thunderstrikes Moved to be a Level 7 Talent.       Level 1 Echoed Corruption Increased stack requirement to 60. Pinnacle Reward: At 100 stacks, Corruption now heals for 50% of the damage dealt. Pursuit of Flame Increased radius from 10% to 15%. Reworded to say "Fel Flame's area is increased by 33%". Progress is now reset upon death and can not lose progress upon completion. Johanna

      Primal Grasp [E] Cooldown reduced from 10 to 8. Delayed damage reduced from 195 to 165. Initial damage increased from 25 to 40. Ravage [Q] Damage reduced from 130 to 115. Now includes a baseline quest: Kill enemies within 1.5 seconds of hitting them with Ravage. Minions grant 1 progress and Heroes grant 5. At 75 stacks, Ravage gains 125 damage. Pinnacle Reward: At 125 stacks, Ravage gains 200 additional damage. Impaling Blades [W] Cooldown reduced from 12 seconds to 9 seconds. Damage reduced from 165 to 140. Radius increased from 1.5 to 1.65. Stun duration reduced from 1 second to .75 seconds. Assimilation [D] Increased the amount of shield gained from Basic Attacks from 10% to 20% of damage dealt.       Level 1 Fury of the Swarm No longer increases shields gained from Basic Attacks. Level 4 Sharpened Blades Talent has been removed. Ravaging Ferocity NEW: Gain 25% attack speed for 3 seconds after using Ravage. Level 7 Boundless Fury Cooldown increased from 10 seconds to 12 seconds. Queen of Blades Cooldown reduction increased from 3 seconds to 4 seconds. Level 10 Summon Ultralisk Damage reduced from 250 to 225. Level 13 Chrysalis HP lowered from 750 to 650. Reduced the amount of health regenerated from 5% max health per second to 4%. Level 16 Painful Spikes Damage reduced from 70 to 60.       Black Arrows [D] Black Arrows now refers to what was previously called "Banshee's Curse". New Baseline Quest: Deal damage to Heroes or Structures with 3 stacks of black arrows. At 250 stacks, increased the damage bonus of Black Arrows to 50%. Pinnacle Reward: At 400 stacks, heal for 25% of damage dealt against enemies with 3 stacks of Black Arrows, doubled against Heroes.       Level 1 Unfurling Shadows Talent has been removed. Unrelenting Torment NEW: Increases the damage of Shadow Dagger by 20% and increase its duration by 1 second. Level 4 Haunting Arrows NEW: You can now activate Black Arrows to cause all damage dealt to stun non-heroes. 90 second cooldown, reduced by 3 seconds when attacking a structure. Possession Now a Baseline ability. 25 seconds to restore each charge, 2 seconds cooldown. Max 4 charges. Level 7 Barbed Shot Bonus damage increased from 350% to 400%. Lost Soul REWORK: Reduces the cooldown of Shadow Dagger when attacking non-minions with 3 stacks of Black Arrows by .75 seconds, doubled against Heroes.       Level 1 Crash Lightning REWORK: Bonuses are now provided at 15 and 30 stacks. At each milestone, Chain Lightning gains 270 damage. Lose 6 stacks on death, but can not lose milestones that have already been completed. Echo of the Elements REWORK: Bonuses are now provided at 20/40/100 stacks. At 20 stacks, reduce mana cost of Chain Lightning by 20. At 40 stacks, Chain Lightning gains an extra charge and will bounce one additional time. Pinnacle Reward: At 100 stacks, Chain Lightning will fork to an additional target each time it bounces. Rolling Thunder Moved to be a Level 7 Talent. No longer increases Chain Lightning bounces by 1. Level 7 Maelstrom Weapon Moved to be a Level 1 Talent. REWORK: Bonuses are now provided at 20/40/100 stacks, rather than incremental gains. At 20 stacks, gain 20 damage and increase the movespeed bonus to 40%. At 40 stacks, gain an additional 40 damage and Thrall permanently gains 15% increased movement speed. Pinnacle Reward: At 100 stacks, Frostwolf Resilience now provides +200% Healing. Level 16 Tempest Fury No longer provides additional quest stacks.       Cho'gall Base Eye of Kilrogg [Skill 1] Fixed an issue that caused the Eye of Kilrogg's cast range indicator to be slightly larger than the ability range. Level 1 We See You! Fixed an issue that caused We See You's range increase tooltip value to display incorrectly after being selected. D.Va Fixed an issue that caused D.Va's Mech to not respawn with the correct amount of Blackheart's Bay Doubloons. Base Defense Matrix [W] Fixed missing icon in D.Va's Quick Cast setting for Retarget Defense Matrix. Gazlowe Level 16 Firin' Mah Lazors Fixed an issue that caused Firin' Mah Lazorz's warning to not display correctly. Fixed an issue that caused Big Top Gazlowe's Firin' Mah Lazorz to create permanent visuals. Kael'thas Base Living Bomb [W] Living Bomb will not activate its effects on a target that becomes immune to Living Bomb. Living Bomb will now apply its effects if the target dies with Living Bomb. Raynor Base Adrenaline Rush [E] Fixed an issue that caused Adrenaline Rush to not display the base duration in its tooltip after selecting Give Me More. Stukov Level 1 Reactive Ballistospores Fixed Reactive Ballistospores tooltip. Tychus Base Overkill [Q] Overkill retarget can now also be targeted in a direction. When clicking near or on a target, it will attach to that target, but if no targets are nearby, Overkill will start firing in that direction. If Overkill hits a target while firing in a direction, that target will become Overkill's primary target. If Overkill is active when there are no possible targets, Overkill will no longer be cancelled, and instead will start firing in the direction of the last primary target. Fixed an issue that caused mounting to not interrupt Overkill. Valla Base Hatred [D] Fixed Hatred Tooltip. Level 20 Storm of Vengeance Fixed an issue that caused Storm of Vengeance to not grant 2% Attack Speed per Hatred stack. Zagara Level 1 Infest Fixed Infest active current bonus tooltip.
