Blizzard added new Benthic tokens to the game in the latest Patch 8.2 build to make gearing up easier while in Nazjatar. This article goes through Benthic gear, item effects, and upgrading.
      Benthic Gear Tokens
Benthic tokens are similar to Relinquished tokens in Legion and they're here to provide a gear catchup. The base item level is 385. All slots except for weapons, trinkets, and rings are available. Helm, Shoulders, and Chest pieces obviously provide Azerite gear. The intro quest to the Benthic system will provide you with one piece of ilvl 385 Benthic gear which you're going to upgrade to ilvl 400.
Benthic Gear has predetermined stats and there's no RNG involved.
The following tokens can be purchased from Artisan Itanu (Alliance) or Finder Palta (Horde) in Nazjatar for 5 Nazjatar Manapearls:
Benthic Bracers Benthic Chestguard Benthic Cloak Benthic Gauntlets Benthic Girdle Benthic Helm Benthic Leggings Benthic Spaulders Benthic Treads Benthic Gear (ilvl 385) can also come from Nazjatar World Quests (Source).

Finder Plata <Treasures of the Unshackled> vendor in Nazjatar. She sells gear tokens for Nazjatar Manapearls, a new currency rewarded from various activities in Nazjatar.
      Buffs
Benthic Gear comes with interesting effects in various slots:
      Back
Fishy Fiends - You have a chance to loot a random fish from creatures in Nazjatar and The Eternal Palace. Frost Resistance - Frost damage taken is reduced by 2% while in Nazjatar and the Eternal Palace. Elemental Instincts - You are more likely to find strange resources related to Mardivas. Shadow Resistance - Shadow damage taken is reduced by 2% while in Nazjatar and The Eternal Palace. Legs
Seabed Runner - Your Speed is increased by 95 while in Nazjatar and the Eternal Palace. Swimmer's Legs - You are 5% larger while in Nazjatar and The Eternal Palace. Waist

Exploding Pufferfish - NYI - Your spells and abilities have a chance to summon a pufferfish that explodes, dealing 0 damage to targets within 8 yards of you. Intra-Ocean Navigation - Your swim speed is increased in Nazjatar and The Eternal Palace by 5%. Upgrading Benthic Gear
The base item level of Benthic items is 385, but you can upgrade them all the way up to item level 415 by talking to Voidbinder Zorian, who will:
Empower a Benthic item from Nazjatar, making it Pearled aind increasing its item level to 400 for 20 Nazjatar Manapearl. Empower a Pearled item from Nazjatar, increasing its item level by 5 up to a maximum of 415 for 10 Nazjatar Manapearls per upgrade. Empower a Pearled Azerite item from Nazjatar, increasing its item level by 15, up to a maximum of 415 for 30 Nazjatar Manapearls.
Upgrade tokens listed below have been removed from the Quartermaster. The upgrade process is now handled by a NPC.
Azsharan Pearling Kit costs 20 Nazjatar Manapearls and the item is used to empower a Benthic item from Nazjatar, making it Pearled aind increasing its item level to 400. Azsharan Pearling Enhancement costs 10 Nazjatar Manapearls. The item's used to empower a Pearled item from Nazjatar, increasing its item level by 5 up to a maximum of 415. Azsharan Azerite Pearling Enhancement costs 30 Nazjatar Manapearls and the item is used to upgrade a Pearled Azerite item from Nazjatar, increasing its item level by 15, up to a maximum of 415. Benthic Gear is here to help you catch up on gear in Rise of Azshara.

With the new patch coming tomorrow/Wednesday, it seems there's a round of Battle for Azeroth trials that include 3 days of free game time going around, but the gift is only hitting certain players. The gift is showing up in the Battle.net app, seemingly only for inactive accounts and possibly only those inactive since Legion as well. There also seems to be a way to trigger the gift if you haven't received it by going to the Battle.net site and clicking to set up a subscription (but not going through with it), which should trigger the gift if you're eligible for it.

We don't know what the exact requirements are for it at the moment and it could be just random, but these are some of the facts gathered up over on the WoW reddit. I've tried this myself on an account that's been inactive since around the start of BfA, but did not receive the gift.

As for the trial itself, other than the 3 days of free game time you can also play a trial character through as much of the Battle for Azeroth experience as you can manage, but you cannot play your own characters through it, as they'll still be stuck in Legion content and unable to progress beyond the Battle for Lordaeron event.
