Arena Balance and Bucket Updates: April 17

Recommended Posts

Adjustments to the weight of Rogue class cards have been made. Also, last week, the current rules for Arena were posted after the release of Rise of Shadows.

It looks like Rogue may have been a tad too powerful in Arena, after the release of Rise of Shadows. Team 5 is adjusting the weight of Rogue class cards, with overperforming ones being seen less frequently.

Later today we will be applying an adjustment to the weight of Rogue class cards in Arenas to address some current balance issues. This means that overperforming Rogue cards will be seen less frequently. Additionally, we will be making changes to the card buckets for other classes to create a more consistent drafting experience. You will not need to patch your client or download any additional data to receive this update.

Please note that after this change some Rogue choices may seem sub-optimal, but we are prepared to address any outstanding issues in a future update. (source)

Rise of Shadows brought a significant change to the Arena, as it now has a rotating draft pool. Accordingly, Blizzard has posted an update to the current Arena rules:

Polish YouTuber MKRR has revealed two new Rogue cards designed around the Combo mechanic: Hooked Scimitar and Whirlkick Master.

The latest card reveals from Saviors of Uldum have been posted by Polish YouTuber MKRR: Hooked Scimitar and Whirlkick Master!

Hooked Scimitar looks like a powerful weapon in any Rogue deck - finding activators for the Combo effect has never been problematic, and a 4/2 Weapon for 3 Mana is a very good deal. It will be interesting to see whether decks built around Raiding Party will favour this card over Waggle Pick, which is more expensive but has a potential upside through its Deathrattle.
Whirlkick Master is a little harder to evaluate. It's potentially a good little value factory, and it can start a chain of generated cards much the same way Lyra the Sunshard and Underbelly Angler can. 2 Mana 1/2s aren't great, but this might be one to keep an eye on.

GameSpot have revealed a new 1-Mana neutral Minion. It has a huge payoff for those who can complete its elaborate ritual.

GameSpot have revealed the latest card from Saviors of Uldum: Mogu Cultist!

It's an inauspicious 1 Mana 1/1 until you can complete its "ritual" by getting 7 copies on the board at once. Do that and you'll be rewarded with Highkeeper Ra, a huge threat which should seal your opponent out of the game, if not simply deal lethal damage on the spot. It's a similar challenge to that posed by the recently revealed Desert Obelisk, but more extreme in both payoff and difficulty.

It will take time to figure out how to achieve this condition. It could be fairly straightforward in Rogue with the use of Lab Recruiter and Togwaggle's Scheme, but will that be a better plan than simply spamming huge Pogo-Hoppers?
In other classes the options are less obvious. It might be possible in Priest, thanks to Mass Resurrection and a plethora of copy effects like Vivid Nightmare, but nothing immediately leaps out at us. Let us know if you can solve the puzzle in the comments below!
GameSpot also published an interview with Hearthstone designers Peter Whalen and Alec Dawson to accompany the card reveal, in which they do some light theory-crafting on the new card. Peter Whalen expanded on the fantasy behind it:

A new Mage card has been revealed by Brazilian YouTuber Nightmare.

A new card from Saviors of Uldum has been revealed by the Brazilian YouTuber Nightmare: Tortollan Pilgrim!

It's reminiscent of Tortollan Primalist, Grand Archivist and Spiteful Summoner. Like the latter two cards, it rewards you for building a minion-heavy deck with a few high-impact spells at the top of the curve.
If you've been pining for the return of Yogg-Saron, Hope's End, Tortollan Pilgrim might help scratch that itch in combination with Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron.

Other potentially powerful things to do with the card would be Flamestrike. Luna's Pocket Galaxy and Power of Creation. If you can play it on an empty board, it could even cast Conjurer's Calling on itself for two random 8-Drops. And as the card says "Copy", you'll still have the card in your deck available to draw into later, which wasn't the case with Grand Archivist.

Shaman gets a new Weapon for Totem decks in a spectacular Lego stop motion reveal video.

A new Shaman card has been revealed by the Taiwanese YouTuber and stop-motion animator Jordan Tseng: Splitting Axe!

The new weapon offers synergy with Totems, something we haven't seen Shaman doing much of lately. It could be powerful under the right circumstances, especially if you're able to copy a premium Totem such as Mana Tide Totem or Nightmare Amalgam, but it's not clear that it fits into any existing Shaman deck. Its purpose may become clearer as we see more new cards from the set.
The stop motion Lego reveal video is really spectacular, so do check out the whole thing. It was made in collaboration with Cid Hsiao, who is apparently an official Lego Ambassador - probably the coolest title you can have in 2019. Watch below:

Cloud Prince and Arcane Flakmage make a powerful case for the revival of the Secret Mage archetype.

Two new Mage cards have been shared on YouTube by the South Korean streamer and Hearthstone Grandmaster Flurry: Cloud Prince and Arcane Flakmage!

The last real reason to play Mage Secrets left when Arcanologist and the rest of Journey to Un'goro rotated out of Standard in April. These two cards offer extremely powerful payoffs for having some Secrets, so perhaps Secret Mage will be back with a vengeance.
Cloud Prince looks very much like Sunreaver Warmage's meaner big brother. It's important to note that its 6-damage Battlecry is able to go face, which isn't always the case with new cards. The extra burn damage option will make it right at home alongside Fireball and Frostbolt.
Arcane Flakmage dishes out a free Consecration whenever you play a Secret. Secret Mage will be a lot slower without its turn 1 Mana Wyrm, so this efficient board clear option should be a big help to it. It's a flexible card with three clear uses: stick it on turn 2 and follow up with a Secret on turn 3; combine it with a Secret on turn 5; or combine it with two Secrets on turn 8 for a massive swing turn.
Watch the full Korean reveal video below:
