Recommended Posts

Powers on Azerite Armor will unlock instantly and progression is moving to Essences in Patch 8.2. You can find more info on Essences in our Essence guide. Here's a preview of the new intro questline which involves MOTHER, Magni, and Spiritwalker Ebonhorn. This article contains spoilers.

The intro quest becomes available right after you establish your foothold in Nazjatar. Magni informs you that MOTHER has apparently found a way to heal Azeroth.

1. Essential Empowerment

Quote

Magni Bronzebeard: Champion! MOTHER has a new plan tae save Azeroth. Meet us in the Chamber of Heart as soon as ye can!

You learn that the Chamber of Heart has been repaired in your absence.

Quote

Magni Bronzebeard: There ye are, champion! We've made repairs to the Chamber of Heart since ye were last here.

2. MOTHER Knows Best

MOTHER finished her awesome calculations and Magni tells you to talk to her. A not yet implemented cutscene begins to play and MOTHER introduces Essences.

3. A Disturbance Beneath the Earth

MOTHER sends you to Highmountain to recover a dragon essence from Neltharion's Lair. By combining dragon essence with sufficient quantities of Azerite within Heart Forge will cause previously undiscovered abilities to manifest within the Heart of Azeroth Heart of Azeroth.

MOTHER: Coordinate desgnation: Highmountain. Essence origin: Unknown

MOTHER: Caution recommended. Readings indicate extreme subterranean instability.

You'll find Navvarogg and Spiritwalker Ebonhorn at Snowblind Messa.

Ebonhorn discovered some sort of disturbance and you must investigate its source.

Quote

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: Hmm, I too have sensed something deep beneath Highmountain... in the caverns that were once Neltharion's Lair.

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: Let us investigate the matter. Navvarogg can bring us directly to the source of the disturbance.

Navarrogg: I can take you into the heart of the mountain, race.

4. Take My Hand

The essence discovered by MOTHER may be an echo of power of the dragonflights. You must act fast before the essence falls into the wrong hands. Talk to Navvarogg to get teleported to the area.

5. Calming the Spine

The power of the black dragonflight echoes around you, and the earth is reeling in response. You must seal the Azerite Fissures in the Dragon's Spine. You find out about the presence of a stone lord from Deepholm.

Quote

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: A stone lord from Deepholm? This is worse than I feared. Their kin still harbors enmity toward the black dragonflight.

2.JPG

Once you close all fissures and complete the quest, it's time to confront the stone lord. He won't give up the essence without a fight.

6. Dominating the Indomitable

Quote

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: Stone lord! I am Ebonhorn, protector of Highmountain. We have come to claim the essence you now hold!

Ma'haat the Indomitable: I know you, dragon. Kin of the Worldbreaker. You are unworthy of such power.

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: I am free of my father's madness. We seek to wield the essence in defense of Azeroth!

Ma'haat the Indomitable: Then face me, and prove you have the strength to do so.

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: Very well. We accept your challenge!

Ma'hat the Indomitable: The earth will break you!

Ma'hat the Indomitable: Enough... I yield. You... are worthy.

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: Well fought, champion. The essence is yours to claim.

You then loot Petrified Ebony Scale Petrified Ebony Scale. This will be your first essence and serves as an introduction to the new system in Rise of Azshara.

Quote

Ma'haat the Indomitable: It is done. Tread carefully. The Stonemother will be watching.

7. A Friendly Face

You must now bring the dragon essence to Magni and MOTHER. Navvarogg has prepared an exit for you, but near the entrance, you'll notice a Blacktalon Watcher in stealth spying on you. We covered the presence of Wrathion's Agents in Rise of Azshara in this post.

Upon arriving at the Chamber of Heart, Ebonhorn is ready to meet Magni and MOTHER.

5.JPG

Quote

Magni: Ah, ye're back, champion! And ye brought... a tauren?!

MOTHER: Draconic presence detected. Designation: Ebyssian, black dragonflight. Lack of Old God corruption indicates low threat probability.

Magni: Ah, it's good tae meet a black dragon that isn't tryin' tae kill us all! Ebyssian, is it? I'm Magni Bronzebeard.

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: Well met, Speaker Magni. In my tauren form, I am known as Ebonhorn. As the construct said, I am here to help.

Magni: Did ye recover the essence that MOTHER detected?

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: Neltharion was once tasked with protecting Azeroth. It is my duty to see the essence carry on that legacy.

Magni: Ye understand the essence better than we do, Ebonhorn. We'd be grateful for any guidance ye can provide.

8. The Heart Forge

The final quest is offered by MOTHER and you must use your Heart of Azeroth Heart of Azeroth to activate the Heart Forge. You will receive rank 1 Petrified Ebony Scale Petrified Ebony Scale and The Heart Forge The Heart Forge achievement.

That's jumping through a lot of hoops to unlock something. It's not a memorable event or anything. Where's the Legion Artifacts quest lines? talking to the lich king? Uther? Fulfill Tirion's dying wishes?

"Go here talk to that guy" x5, grats you unlocked pieces of code that was part of the previous expansion too. But... NEW PASSIVES, AM I RIGHT?!

Valor Points are coming this week and are supposed to save/improve Mythic+ gearing but, as our own Seliathan goes into in-depth, it's not quite a good enough improvement on the already pretty messy Mythic+ loot system.
Seliathan is an Icy Veins Rogue class guide writer, completed several World First Mythic+ clears, including the +20, and he wrote a big piece for Raider.IO, analyzing the M+ gear and the way the Valor Point system will affect it, the flaws in both, and how to improve them. And while Blizzard might potentially be removing the 1500 cap on Valor, exactly as the article suggests, there are many more problems and potential solutions presented there. He goes over many topics, including how M+ gearing compares to PvP and raiding, what the actual purpose of M+ is and where it fits in the overall gearing scheme, the lack of other rewards in M+, the need for higher Keystone Master-type achievement tiers and a lot more. Here are some highlights, but head straight on to the full (and huge) analysis post on Raider.IO if you want all the details:
There's a LOT more to read over in the full article on Raider.IO, with many excellent points and insights into Mythic+ and how it could be improved, so make sure to read the whole thing!

Covenant Callings will reward Valor starting tomorrow, so make sure to save them until Patch 9.0.5 goes live in your region!

Rare Covenant Callings in Patch 9.0.5 award 35 Valor. Epic Covenant Callings grant you 50 Valor.

One character can hold up to 3 Covenant Callings at a time, which means you should wait until Tuesday (US) or Wednesday (EU) before you complete / turn in any Covenant Callings for extra Valor.

Blizzard is bringing back Valor in Patch 9.0.5, and the currency is used to upgrade Mythic Dungeon Gear, but what are the upgrade costs?
The Red Rogue discovered the exact upgrade costs of gear with Valor in Patch 9.0.5 with a few missing slots, but before we go through them, let's talk about how the whole system works.
      Item Ranks and Upgrades
Every item from dungeons in Patch 9.0.5 is given a rank based on their Item Level, as you can see on the tooltip.

The items go from Rank 1 (Item Level 184) to Rank 12 (Item Level 220).
This also applies to Great Vault loot. For example, if you receive Item Level 200 from the weekly chest, it will be of Rank 6/12.

Base Mythic Gear (Item Level 184) can be upgraded to Item Level 200 without any requirements. All the higher rank upgrades are gated behind various achievements that require you to complete all Shadowlands Season 1 dungeons at Mythic Level 5, 10, and 15 within the time limit.
In other words, if you want to upgrade Dungeon Gear to Item Level 220, you must complete all 8 Shadowlands Season 1 dungeons at Mythic 15 or above, within the time limit.
We summarized everything explained above in the following table:
Item Rank Item Level Requirements 1 184 No Requirements 2 187 No Requirements 3 190 No Requirements 4 194 No Requirements 5 197 No Requirements 6 200 No Requirements 7 203 Shadowlands Keystone Explorer: Season One 8 207 Shadowlands Keystone Explorer: Season One 9 210 Shadowlands Keystone Conqueror: Season One 10 213 Shadowlands Keystone Conqueror: Season One 11 216 Shadowlands Keystone Master: Season One 12 220 Shadowlands Keystone Master: Season One It's important to note that you can't upgrade gear obtained before Patch 9.0.5, which means you must re-farm everything when the patch goes live.
      Valor Caps
You can have a maximum of 8,750 Valor, but the cap starts at 5,000 and increases by 750 each week. Blizzard also said one character could only hold 1,500 Valor at a time, but that may have been scrapped in the end.
      9.0.5 Week 1 Maximum Cap: 5,000 9.0.5 Week 2 Maximum Cap: 5,750 9.0.5 Week 3 Maximum Cap: 6,500 9.0.5 Week 4 Maximum Cap: 7,250 9.0.5 Week 5 Maximum Cap: 8,750 Weekly Cap: N/A Upgrade Costs
Now that we know more about item ranks and caps, we are looking at how much Valor you will need for upgrades.
All the data is provided by The Red Rogue, who also uploaded a handy video about the whole system. You can follow him on YouTube.
You can upgrade gear by bringing it to Aggressor Zo'dash <Facilitator of Conflict> in Oribos, located in the Enclave of Oribos.
The upgrade process is straightforward and works just like upgrading PvP or Covenant gear.
The upgrade costs are different for each slot.
Off-Hands, Rings, Cloaks, Bracers, Necks cost 250 Valor per upgrade. Shoulders, Gloves, Trinkets, Boots, Belts cost 400 Valor per upgrade. Helms, Chests, Legs cost 475 Valor per upgrade. 1-Handed Agility Weapon costs 500 Valor per upgrade 1-Handed Intellect Weapon costs 750 Valor per upgrade. 2-Handed Weapons cost 1,000 Valor per upgrade. The costs of 1-Handed Strength Weapons and Shields remain unknown for now, but based on PvP Upgrade costs, a 1H Weapon + Shield upgrades together should cost the same amount of Valor per upgrade just like a 2H weapon, so 500 Valor per item per upgrade (needs confirmation).

It appears that the Weekly Maximum Valor cap has been removed on the 9.0.5 PTR. The patch releases this week on March 9.
Previously, players could only earn 750 Valor each week, as shown in the screenshot below.

On Thursday, Blizzard announced in a blue post that they were increasing Valor caps on the 9.0.5 PTR. Most importantly, they also added that there would be a cap of 1,500 on how much Valor a character can hold at a time, which seems to have been scrapped in the end.
Currently, on the PTR, it looks like Blizzard has entirely removed the Weekly Valor cap in a hotfix (see missing tooltip). The Total Maximum cap has been increased to 8,750 Valor.

We're still waiting for Blizzard to confirm if the Weekly Cap has been indeed scrapped or if it's just a bug.

ChromedDragon created a map of Draenor before Garrosh showed up. Check it out!
On the map, we see how the individual Orc clans completely surrounded the Draenei from almost all directions.
