WoW Classic Spotlight: Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian

Recommended Posts

jIdE4jr.jpg

Atiesh is the first legendary caster weapon added to the game in World of Warcraft. In this spotlight, we're looking at the staff in more detail.

Check out our other two Classic spotlights, covering Anathema/Benediction and Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker.

Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian

Medivh's staff will be obtainable in WoW Classic by Druids, Mages ,Priests, and Warlocks, even though the quest line itself was removed from the live game back in Wrath of the Lich King when Naxxramas moved to Northrend. Players who were able to get it were rewarded the Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian Feat of Strength achievement.

Atiesh comes with the ability to open a portal to Karazhan (Portal: Karazhan Portal: Karazhan), even though the raid did not open until the Burning Crusade.

There are four variations of the staff, each corresponding to their respective Class with different stats.

Requirements

Naxxramas will need to be open on Classic realms for weapon fragments to start dropping. Getting the staff revolves around killing Naxxramas bosses, including Kel'Thuzad and C'thun in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj.

First, you must collect 40 Splinter of Atiesh Splinters of Atiesh which drop from Naxxramas bosses to form the Frame of Atiesh Frame of Atiesh. Neutral reputation standing with Brood of Nozdormu is required to get the next quest (Atiesh, the Befouled Greatstaff).

The next step is to obtain the Base of Atiesh Base of Atiesh from C'Thun and Staff Head of Atiesh Staff Head of Atiesh from Kel'Thuzad. Note that this step will be a true challenge, as it requires defeating the hardest Vanilla bosses with a group of 40 players.

Finally, you will be sent to Stratholme to cleanse the staff (Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian) and defeat Atiesh. This fight involves a conjured legendary sword which can be used by the player to defeat Atiesh.

It seems we'll have to wait a bit longer for the much needed key ring feature that will free up thousands of inventory slots across Classic! Blizzard said the addition will come in the "first patch" to the Classic client and later clarified that a patch is not the same thing as a phase, as they can simply "turn on" features in the phases, while a patch has to change the game client.
Phase 2 is coming this Thursday, November 14th, bringing with it the PvP Honor system and world bosses, and every realm has already switced single layer, today in fact.

Yes – the Keyring will come to WoW Classic with our first patch to the game client later this year.
We don’t yet have a certain date for the patch, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.
Correct. We’re able to turn on content such as Dire Maul or World Bosses without having to change the game client and require downtime the way a patch does.
      Sorry for the confusion.

Players were abusing line-of-sight rules in Gadgetzan, so Blizzard gave the guards in Gadgetzan, Booty Bay, and Everlook longer range on their ranged attacks in today's hotfixes, even though the new range differs slightly from their reference WoW 1.12 client.
Blizzard also said they will be taking action against players who exploit the line-of-sight rules, so we might see suspensions going out later today.

      Classes
Resolved an issue that caused Survival Hunters’ Mending Bandage (PvP Talent) to heal more than intended on non-player targets. WoW's 15th Anniversary
Korrak’s Revenge The amount of Timewarped Badges rewarded for winning or losing Korrak's Revenge have been doubled from 10 and 5 to 20 and 10.  The repeatable quests “Irondeep Supplies,” “Coldtooth Supplies,” and “More Armor Scraps” no longer reward Timewarped badges. Many quests in Korrak's Revenge now are daily quests and reset daily. They are as follows: “Irondeep Supplies,” “Coldtooth Supplies,” “Towers and Bunkers,” “Capture a Mine,” “The Graveyards of Alterac,” “Armor Scraps,” “Capture a Mine,” and “Alterac Valley Graveyards.” Developers’ note: While acquiring supplies from the mines and mounts for the ram and wolf riders contributes to the battle, we agree with the feedback that these can be a bit repetitive. To that end, we have converted a number of quests within the Battleground into dailies and removed the reward for the repeatable turn-ins. The guards in Gadgetzan, Booty Bay, and Everlook now have a significantly longer range on their ranged attacks. Developers’ note: We’re seeing some players attack others by abusing line-of-sight rules in Gadgetzan. This disruption is against our Terms of Service (as it was in 2006) and we’re taking action against players who exploit this game mechanic. While this new range differs slightly from original WoW 1.12, it better enforces the authentically intended consequence of PvPing in a goblin city by challenging the attacker to fight, die, or escape the guards. The Discombobulator Ray will now correctly dismount mounted enemy players. Abilities that provide a damage increase to the next auto attack (e.g. Heroic Strike and Raptor Strike) will now properly break crowd control effects if the ability was queued before the crowd control was applied. Corrected an issue that prevented pets from attacking a target who entered stealth after the Attack command is used. Corrected an issue with the Gnomish Cloaking Device that caused it to incorrectly drop the player from combat when used. November 8, 2019
Guards will now correctly be more willing to assist players in PvP combat who have Friendly or higher standing with them. However, they will continue to not assist players with Neutral standing. Corrected an issue that was causing Onyxia to fail to clear the threat of the primary target of her Fireball ability. October 22, 2019
Fixed a bug that caused creatures such as Solenor the Slayer to misbehave when pursuing the player. Groups of creatures that commit to combat as a group will now all continue to pursue whenever any one of them are struck by a player attack or ability. October 16, 2019
The buffs obtained from the guards in Dire Maul North after completing a tribute run will no longer stack.

Molten Core speed runs ahead of Phase 2 seem to be really popular these days and Salad Bakers from Gehennas-EU managed to clear the raid in 28 mins and 29 secs, which is currently the world's fastest reported clear of the 40-player raid.

According to the latest update by Blizzard, free character moves from select US realms will be only available to Horde characters.

I’ve updated the original post here.
Free Character Moves from Fairbanks, Herod, Incendius, Kromcrush, Skeram, and Stalagg are only available to Horde characters.
We had some unexpected technical issues when we first enabled this service a couple of hours ago, and we’ve been working through those.
      Thank you!
It appears Blizzard ran into some technical issues when they enabled the free character moves today, but they still plan to have all realms on one layer tomorrow, and launch Phase 2 on November 14.

Next week, we will take multiple steps to prepare for the release of the PvP Honor system and World Bosses at 11:00 a.m. PST on Thursday, November 14. Here’s an outline of those steps.
Monday, November 11 – Updates to Free Character Moves**
At 11:00 a.m. PST on Monday, we will update the Free Character Move service.
Free Character Moves from all realms to Sul’thraze (Brazil) and Loatheb (Mexico) will be closed at this time. Free Character Moves will no longer be available from Atiesh, Benediction, or Yojamba (Australia). The following Free Character Moves will be available: FROM TO FACTION Arugal Felstriker   Bigglesworth Anathema   Bigglesworth Arcanite Reaper   Bigglesworth Earthfury   Blaumeux Anathema   Blaumeux Arcanite Reaper   Blaumeux Earthfury   Faerlina Anathema   Faerlina Arcanite Reaper   Faerlina Earthfury   Fairbanks Anathema Horde-only Fairbanks Arcanite Reaper Horde-only Fairbanks Earthfury Horde-only Fairbanks Heartseeker Horde-only Grobbulus Anathema   Grobbulus Arcanite Reaper   Grobbulus Deviate Delight   Herod Arcanite Reaper Horde-only Herod Heartseeker Horde-only Incendius Anathema   Incendius Arcanite Reaper   Incendius Earthfury   Kromcrush Arcanite Reaper Horde-only Kromcrush Heartseeker Horde-only Mankrik Azuresong   Mankrik Windseeker   Pagle Azuresong   Pagle Windseeker   Skeram Arcanite Reaper Horde-only Skeram Heartseeker Horde-only Stalagg Arcanite Reaper Horde-only Stalagg Heartseeker Horde-only Sulfuras Anathema   Sulfuras Arcanite Reaper   Sulfuras Earthfury   Whitemane Anathema   Whitemane Arcanite Reaper   Whitemane Earthfury   We strongly suggest that any players planning to use a Free Character Move do so as soon as possible. Free Character Moves may be disabled without warning at any time.
Tuesday, November 12 – All Realms to One Layer
With scheduled weekly maintenance beginning at 7:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday, all WoW Classic realms will be set to a single-layer. We expect some realms listed above to experience long queues after this step. We especially encourage players on Arugal, Faerlina, Herod, and Whitemane to use the Free Character Move service to avoid excessive queues.
Thursday, November 14 – PVP Honor System and World Bosses
At 11:00 a.m. PST on Thursday, the update will occur for all realms in this region. The PvP Honor system will come online, and it will become possible for Azuregos and Kazzak to spawn.
      Thank you very much!

We have some Classic hotfixes today, as guards will get more involved in PvP with Friendly players, presumably in preparation for the Honor system that's coming next week andwe also get an Onyxia threat fix!
