David "Dog" Caero has given up his place in the Hearthstone Grandmasters league in favour of "streaming and other personal pursuits".

It's not an entirely unexpected development - Dog has talked candidly on his Twitch stream about his experience in the league, and rumours of him quitting ahead of Season 2 have circulated for some time now.

Dog is well-known as both a competitive player and a streamer, and was one of the top Hearthstone streamers on Twitch until his recent pivot to Teamfight Tactics. He has had a strong year as a competitor, finishing the league stage of Grandmasters Season 1 in first place and winning Hearthstone Masters Tour Las Vegas.

Dog has moved away from Hearthstone recently to become a successful streamer of Teamfight Tactics. Teamfight Tactics is an "autobattler", a relatively new genre in which players build an army of units with various abilities and pit them against each other. The game is one of the most popular on Twitch at the moment, and has become a big hit with Hearthstone fans in particular.

US player Edward "Gallon" Goodwin will step in to fill Dog's spot. As the runner-up of Hearthstone Masters Tour Las Vegas, Gallon was already the front runner for promotion at the end of the year if any of the current Americas Grandmasters were to be relegated. He only narrowly missed the cut when players were selected for Season 1; his 110 HCT points placed him joint 14th in the Americas region, behind only Cydonia and Alan870806 in terms of non-Grandmasters players.

Heartstone players slowly move from this game to Autochess kind of games. And they keep their viewers, and sometimes increase them even. I don't know what this says about the state of this game though, probably nothing positive.
