Leveling Improvements Coming in Shadowlands

Recommended Posts

The world will scale down to your level in Shadowlands, ensuring a fun leveling experience, where you pick a zone for leveling based on your preference. There will also be no Artifact Power grind so playing alts will be more fun!

Check out our BlizzCon 2019 Content Hub for the latest news coverage!

Leveling Improvements in Patch 9.0 (Pre-Patch and Beyond)

  • The current max level (120) will be squished to level 50 in the Shadowlands pre-patch.
  • The new max cap will be level 60 in the Shadowlands expansion.
  • Blizzard is completely overhauling the leveling experience to make it more meaningful and streamlined.
    • You will feel rewarded with each level by unlocking abilities, a talent row, dungeon access, and more.
  • Levels 1-10 provide a new introductory experience where you'll learn everything about your class and Azeroth.
  • You will be able to level anywhere in the world in the 10-50 range. Do you like Mists of Pandaria? Simply, talk to Chromie and play from the start (level 10) until the end (level 50) in Pandaria and then head straight to the Shadowlands. Do you like the Burning Crusade better and just hate Draenor? No problem! You can level all the way to 50 in Outland!
    • Note: This does not imply that you will be locked to a specific expansion and must finish it completely. You'll be able to head back and pick another one if you don't like the one you've chosen.

New characters will participate in an introductory voyage from 1-10, then pick their favorite expansion that scales to level 50 and continue their journey (50-60) in the Shadowlands.

LEVELED-UP LEVELING

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands will smooth out the leveling experience and better prepare new adventurers for what’s to come. Players will level up to 50 before heading to the Shadowlands (new level cap: 60).

We’ve adjusted the experience curve to make it faster than ever to prepare for the newest challenges, and each level along the way will provide more meaningful increases in progress and power. All expansion zones are getting more flexible, too; they’ll be able* to scale to you and your friends while you level to 50, so it’s easy to try a zone you’ve never played.

*You can still outlevel dungeons and crush them for transmogs or fulfillment.

Alts in Patch 9.0

  • Game Director Ion Hazzikostas mentioned that you'll be able to play alts as "New Game+ experience" by picking a Covenant immediately with no need for additional farming.
  • It's also important to point out that there will be no endless Artifact Power grind in Shadowlands.
  • You'll be able to earn endgame progression while you level.

You can find out more about what's coming in WoW Shadowlands in our What's Next panel recap.

The whole "pick your era" thing is great and all, but it really needs to come with a removal of the pathfinder flying requirements to even the eras out for players who haven't been able to do rep grinds

Also I'm not sure about the whole idea of having the newest expansion cover 10 levels while the rest of the game is squished into 10-50. That means Shadowlands effectively covers like 25 levels on the current scale.

What will this mean for starter edition? Will they be able to play through any expansion with their lvl 20 characters?

What would you suggest otherwise? honestly it works fine since it all scales so what does it really matter that the new xpac is 10 levels.

I would suggest the shadowlands going from 55-60, at the most. I don't know it may work out fine as is, just getting echoes of the way BFA content has a larger ilvl range than the rest of the game combined.

I wonder if players get flying at 10 now. I don't see how will anyone level in deepholme/icecrown if that's not the case

Yeah, that is a concern. Cataclysm has some of my favorite zones, but not being able to fly will make it a lot more difficult. Not to mention the gold costs if those aren't getting lowered, either.

So how will this work for people such as myself who enjoys solo raiding old content for transmog and mounts?

I don't think anything will change for those solo clearing old content as a max level character.

The way I see it, you can opt into (talk to Chromie) a fully scaled version of the world but if you don't, it'll be as it is today.

I wonder what it means for transmog. Seeing as you'll be able to level in Pandaria from 10+ will you have the appearances unlocked already? Will the raid gear from the expac you're leveling in be available or will you have to reach certain thresholds?

We're back with the first week of data for patch 10.0.7 as we take a look at how the specs are doing in the Vault! We already took a peek last week and things have changed a little, but while Warlocks did get several fixes to tone them down a little, they're still doing very well indeed, and we look in on Retribution after the revamp as well. Also important to remember, some specs are getting nerfs with this week's reset, and you can check out all the tuning here.
      Mythic
      Overall Damage 95th Percentile
While Affliction did get removed from the No.1 spot it didn't go too far, but this may be just a residual result of the two bugs that affected/helped the spec early in the week, so we'll have to wait until next time to find out. What is clear is that Frost DK is far ahead (and is thus getting a 3% overall nerf this week), and the other Warlocks that only benefited from one bug are close by. Marksmanship finds itself in 4th without any bugs (that we know of), and Shadow has fallen from its throne down to 6. Subtlety is only two down from before the patch, while Devastation drops the farthest in the top 10, dropping 6 spots down to 8th. Arms is also down quite a bit, tying Shadow for that 2nd worst-off spot, 5 down in 9th, while Havoc rounds out the top 10 only having dropped 1! Retribution's rework sees it getting just outside the top 10, passing Balance and Outlaw just today. As one DK spec makes it big, the other apparently must pay the price, with Unholy dropping down to the bottom 3 to join Assassination and Arcane.

95th percentile Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Overall Damage All Percentiles
Affliction is still lingering at the top in the overall bracket, which may or may not be due to the bugs. However, Marksmanship is doing much better here, snagging the No.2 spot and sitting in a Warlock sandwich, as Subtletly only drops 2 spots into 4th. Frost DK finds itself a few spots down since the patch, but it's doing fine compared to Shadow, which definitely wins the biggest fall prize, finding itself down in 6th after having reigned supreme for quite a while. We then have the spec of the hour as we see a pink trace up there in 7th, with the Retribution rework having done wonders (and unlike its PvP counterpart, it's not getting nerfed! Arms is also down quite a bit, as Outlaw and Havoc close out the top 10, while Destruction is just outside, but as we mentioned before, we'll have to check back with Warlocks next week to see the real picture. Unholy joins two Mage specs at the bottom, dropping 6 spots.
All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Heroic DPS
It's all Affliction all the time in the lower difficulties, but we do see Hunters bring it as well, with beast Mastery joining Marksmanship in the top 3, and even Survival making it into the top 10! Assassination and Arcane fall down from their No.1 and 2 spots, but not that far, as they find themselves in 4th and 5th.

All percentiles Heroic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Normal DPS
The 3 Hunters in top 4 situation continues, but this time it's Affliction joining them instead of Arms, and it's taking over. The Hunters are all bunched up in spots 2 to 4, and we see a GIANT move from Retribution after the revamp, rising a massive 16 spots right into 5th!
All percentiles Normal data by Warcraft Logs.

Meanwhile you can check out our Dragonflight class guides here or our Vault of the Incarnates guides here, as well as more data from Warcrat Logs here.
