Second Warcraft Movie Rumor Mentioned by Chris Metzen

There have been some rumors going around recently about a potential second Warcraft movie that may be in development. These were somewhat vague and just mentioned that the production company for the first movie, Legendary Entertainment, were "already discussing" the next Warcraft movie behind the scenes and that it would wipe the slate clean and start the franchise over. The next rumor had a little more weight to it, coming from a relatively reliable "scooper", Daniel Ritchman via Movie Web, and claimed that the second movie is actually already in development. All related articles mention the poor critical and audience receptions of the first movie, as well as it's success in China and high box office returns from overseas.

Now all of the above rumors were a little under our benchmark, as it's all very vague, but something new came up today which definitely got our attention, as first noticed by Wowhead:

Metzen was also involved in the first movie, co-producing it and being an un-credited writer, and he also had a cameo appearance in it as a turbaned perfume vendor in Stormwind. Whether his comment was just as a member of the public and obviously interested in seeing more Warcraft or he knows something more about this rumor is unclear, although it seems difficult to believe a project like that would be made without his knowing about it. In any case, his mentioning it definitely made us a lot more curious.

We've also recently seen some community wishes for a potential Lich King movie, with Henry Cavil as Arthas (with some posters whipped up as well), which definitely got everyone's vote for the next attempt at starting the Warcraft cinematic universe, and it seems pretty likely that regardless of which iconic storyline they choose to adapt, Metzen should be involved to some degree. The first movie's director, Duncan Jones, previously both shared his own plans for a potential trilogy, and commented on the fact that a sequel wouldn't be happening as far as he knows, which is true even if the above rumor turns out to be true.

NOT part of the rumor, just a fan interpretation.

So, what do you think of the rumor? And which part of the Warcraft mythos should be covered in this potential re-launch of the brand on the big screen?

If it will happen it will be about one of two things:
1) Second War because obviously
2) Thrall's origin story

I am ok with both of these

Duncan Jones again... crap. The guy may love the game and have passion for the Warcraft universe, but those things count for nothing when he lacks vision of how to portray it well in film. Watching the movie you can tell his main concern was getting the orcs right, and he did, but that's pretty much the only positive thing about it. I used to have intense hatrad for this movie, I just don't care about any future projects from Duncan Jones.

You do know that he may learn from his mistakes and end up giving us a Lord of the Rings level epic movie right?

As a fan of the original storyline and Warcraft Lore, I'm personally strictly against the second movie if it will follow the first movie's alternate storyline and production style; which even cut off the one cameo even Metzen was in.

Hopefully they will not do that and like the first rumor said, will be a "clean slate" , maybe even directed by Terran Gregory? ?

*UPDATE:
Chris Metzen said he doesn't know anything, he's just sharing what he saw ?

I had no interest in the first movie. Mainly because I didn't see it following the lore faithfully...which is exactly what happened. Same thing applies to a possible second movie.

No, I have no faith in that and I will remain skeptical untill I'm proven wrong.

I really hope this is true. Even though it wasnt the best movie, it was still really fun to have one in the Warcraft universe. However, if they make a second, they absolutely need to follow Arthas' story arch, it would do far better than other options imo

With how much lore has been changed in the first movie, I'm not sure how any of these would play out. Especially after planned script for a next movie has been revealed. Thrall being told by a tauren (in EK...) to find a new home for his people in Kalimdor. If they are going to make a new movie, hopefully it's going to be something else.

Though these news seem rather odd, considering how they sold all props from their first movie. Now they would need to invest a lot of money into making new ones. Rather risky investment, considering how poorly first movie performed.

That is sad to hear, but hey, some like the movie. I've watched the Warcraft movie about 4 times by now, and I like it. Hell, a friend of mine, who never played WoW, likes it.

They literally said the movie made big money overseas and in China - which is a HUGE market. They didn't underperform at all.

Are you saying it's impossible to mess up his story? Hm...

I think the movies should basically be 90 minute CGI cinematics. I would be fine with sitting in a theatre watching a full-length movie in the same quality as the recent Sylvannas/Saurfang battle scene.

Some great news for Chinese players, as Blizzard have signed a new agreement with NetEase, and players will be returning to their games as early as summer 2024!
Most Blizzard games were suspended in January of 2023, with players losing access to their characters and being unable to play World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft III: Reforged, Overwatch, the StarCraft series, Diablo III, and Heroes of the Storm, due to an expired licensing agreement. Luckily, a new deal has now been made!
A lot of WoW players decided to re-roll brand new characters on Taiwanese and Korean servers after the old deal stopped. Their old character data is saved, however, but it will be from back before patch 10.1, so it's going to be a tough decision on how to proceed for them. Perhaps Blizzard can come up with a solution to merge the accounts?

With Johanna Faires recently taking on the role of the new President at Blizzard, let's delve into the history of Blizzard Presidents from 1991 up to the present.
Allen Adham served as President from 1991 to 1998. Mike Morhaime held the position of President and CEO from 1998 to 2018. J. Allen Brack assumed the role of President between 2018 and 2021. In 2021, Jen O'neal was named Co-Leader of Blizzard alongside Mike Ybarra. However, she chose to leave the company after just three months. Following her departure, Mike Ybarra took over as President until a few weeks ago when he also announced his departure from the company on January 25, 2024. Johanna Faires was appointed as Blizzard's President on January 29, 2024.
We've come across a Reddit post where someone alleges to have worked at Blizzard during Mike Morhaime's tenure as President, continuing through Ybarra's leadership. We can't vouch for the accuracy of their statement, but here's what they had to share with the community.
