How to Unlock Flying in Shadowlands in Patch 9.1

Recommended Posts

Blizzard added a new item to the game in the first 9.1 build that teaches you Shadowlands flying.

Players will be able to unlock flying through Memories of Sunless Skies Memories of Sunless Skies in Chains of Domination. The new item teaches you Shadowlands flying, allowing all characters on your account to fly in Bastion, Ardenweald, Revendreth, and Maldraxxus.

Memories of Sunless Skies Memories of Sunless Skies unlocks flying for all alts at Level 50+ in Shadowlands.

UPDATE: Muffinus confirmed that flying is coming early in Patch 9.1 and we should be able to unlock it a week after we establish a foothold in Korthia, the new Maw sub-zone.

All you need to do to unlock flying in Patch 9.1 is reach Renown 59 and complete the final chapter of your Covenant Campaign. The new Renown cap in 9.1 is Renown 80 and reaching Renown 59 should take approximately 7 weeks after Patch 9.1 goes live if Blizzard continues to increase the weekly cap by 3.

Unfortunately, there's no flying in the Maw and Korthia because both areas are intended for end-game and we won't be able to fly in Oribos either.

Oh. Whoopee.

More renown grinding.  More Maw grinding.  More daily grinding.  Because we all love that SO much and it's JUST SO rewarding.

I still sincerely hope what they meant by "Completing Covenant Campaign" was just Renown 23, when we get the achievement with that name, also 9.1 introduction scenario quests to unlock flight at the end.

Since we are unlocking ability to use all mounts in the Maw and later disable The Eye of Jailer mechanic in first and second chapters of the Chains of Domination meta-achievement, that seemed more fair and logical.

This way it is somewhat needlessly time gated for an already late arriving patch, also not new player or casual friendly at all and may not be very motivating for a big percentage of players. Well, it's still PTR, so we'll see if it will be altered or made better.

*UPDATE: 7 week panic ensues... Muffinus jumps in to save the day!
Thanks a lot (again) Muffinus! 😉

We can at least thank blizz for droping the rep farm...

Lets say Rep WOULD be required: If someone doesnt have the REP by now, he simply doesnt deserve "flying" in the first place 😄

Getting the Rep is so easy...i got it on my alt with just Callings and Missiontable...There is no excuse (besides someone just starts playing in 9.1) for not having the rep by now

instead of doing dailies to get rep you now do dailies to get renown. only change in my opinion is , that you can catch up easier if you couldnt play one week or another. so at least a small improvement for people who cant play that often thought

Glad we'll have flying, probably could be here sooner given how late the patch is going to be coming out. Either way it's not a big deal as I generally enjoy navigating the zones and there's some handy tools to move around.

So don't do it, and just get it through raids, dungeons and pvp. You'll just be a week behind everyone else.

We could have been getting flying in 9.2 like other expansions and STILL have the grind...

This is the only kicker. Dropping the rep requirement is kinda irrelevant given how easy it is to get passively, and now they've added an obligatory 7+ week timegate anyway.

I get they regret giving us flying, but for the love of god STOP TIME GATING EVERY *filtered* THING

Yeah, it seems we unlock flying at rep 59. All my level 60s, are currently at the level 40 cap. Agreed that it's a needless time gate. Thankfully flying will be accountwide, but still feels bad if they stick to the 3 renown levels per week. Here's hoping we get it sooner rather than later.

I don't mind the timegate! People seem to want everything NOW and not have to work for it. Then they whine & complain that there is nothing to do a month later. I have all 4 at 40 and  I am taking a "break" from retail. I'll be ready to do this 4 x again when the patch releases.

Instead of whining about doing the same thing over and over - take a break!

I would prefer more story over this dull grinding.

men so much whining, world of warcraft is an mmorpg game, name one single GOOD mmorpg game that you don't have to grind, you can even get the renown by just doing dailys tanking about 30min tops, ppl this days want everything fast, easy and non hard to get, but then what? it would be WoD all over again

The game's been like that for 16 years already, do you keep paying while you wait for it to suddenly adapt to you?

I can totally understand not being able to fly in the Maw. It is thematically correct. However, not being able to fly in Oribos is stupid.

We have a very Dracthyr-looking piece of concept art from way back pre-Vanilla, as xperio28 spotted a bulkier version of the new race coming in Dragonflight in the Art of World of Warcraft book!
There's been a lot of talk about the look of the Dracthyr, mostly focusing on their size and bulkiness, and while the art below almost certainly isn't of this specific race, as it was made pre-Vanilla WoW, it's looking very similar:

      Source: xperio28.
The text is very hard to make out, but enigmapenguin and YendorWons in the thread may have figured it out, at least partially:
Greater whelp grown to man size will hunt other dragon whelps then larger dragons feed on The whole "feed on" aspect is particularly interesting, as there's plenty of speculation going around on whether or not Galakrond, the OG dragon-eater will have something to do with Dragonflight's story (especially with the potential for the Infinite dragonflight's involvement).
We've have plenty of bipedal dragon-like creatures in WoW over the years so the connection isn't direct, but it is interesting to see how far back the idea of playable-looking dragon race goes, especially since we know the original plan was to have many more playable races, including naga.
