Elegon Encounter Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
Elegon is the 5th boss found in the Mogu'shan vaults; here players will face this corrupted celestial, a star-filled guardian constructed by the Titans, as he attempts to re-ignite the nearby Engine of Nalak'sha.
Role-Specific Tips for Elegon
DPS Tips
- Killing priority targets is the most important thing on this encounter. Focus
on the
Energy Charge you are assigned to during Phase 2, and the Empyreal Focus engines during Phase 3.
- Focus on minimizing your movement as much as possible, as this fight has very little movement required if you position properly, resulting in much higher DPS up-time on the boss and adds.
Healer Tips
- Be sure that dispels are on point for
Closed Circuit as this can easily cause deaths if not removed quickly.
- Be sure to coordinate defensive cooldowns for each
Total Annihilation cast, as this is the most likely chance of player deaths during this encounter.
- The longer that Phase 3 lasts, the more raid damage Elegon will deal via
Unstable Energy; be sure the healers are evenly divided on both sides of the room and use healing cooldowns as needed to survive this phase.
Tank Tips
- Tank positioning is very important here, both keeping Elegon
faced away for
Celestial Breath, and correctly positioning the Celestial Protectors throughout their lifespan.
Celestial Breath is telegraphed with a 1.5 second cast and should always be mitigated with a defensive cooldown.
- Managing stacks of
Overcharged should be a priority for tanks, taking advantage of the time between
Celestial Breaths and Celestial Protector spawns to tank swap.
- Keep an eye out for the Cosmic Sparks that spawn constantly during Phase 3 and gather them all together.
Strategy for Elegon
Elegon is the 5th boss that players will face inside Mogu'Shan Vaults,
consisting of 3 Phases that repeat twice.
Elegons room consists of what we will refer to as both an "Inner Circle"
(shown as green in the above picture), and an "Outer Circle" (shown as red).
These different areas play a significant role throughout the fight, especially
during Phase 1. While standing on the Inner Circle, players will gain the
Touch of the Titans buff, increasing all damage dealt and healing received
by 50%. This powerful titan buff will cause players to gain a stacking
debuff,
Overcharged, which increases all damage taken by 5%
per stack, gaining an additional stack for every few seconds spent on the Inner
Circle. Players must constantly manage their stacks of
Overcharged
by quickly stepping off the Inner Circle, out onto the Outer Circle briefly,
then stepping back into the Inner Circle. This will reset all stacks of
Overcharged and allow you to continue benefiting from
Touch of the Titans. The Inner and Outer Circles act as a line-of-sight
barrier, meaning players on the Inner Circle can not interact with enemies or
players on the Outer Circle, and vise versa. This means that the raid should
mostly stay on the same section of the room, only briefly stepping out onto the
Outer Circle when
Overcharged stacks need to be reset.
Phase 1 is the hardest part of the encounter as there are a ton of things happening
at once. The entire raid must manage their stacks of
Overcharged,
constantly resetting them whenever they reach around 10 stacks. The tanks will
need to alternate jobs, with 1 tank keeping Elegon faced away from the
raid at all times to prevent his
Celestial Breath from hitting anyone
else. The second tank will need to pick up the Celestial Protectors that
Elegon calls in every 35-seconds, dragging them near the edge of the
Inner Circle (more on the adds next). These 2 tanks will need to swap jobs occasionally,
allowing each other to reset their stacks of
Overcharged between
add spawns.
The Celestial Protectors are the most difficult part of this encounter,
requiring plenty of coordination to correctly handle their many mechanics. The
off-tank will need to pick these up and drag them to the edge of the Inner Circle,
where the raid will need to quickly burn the Celestial Protector down.
The Celestial Protectors will attack random raid members with
Arcing Energy, dealing moderate Arcane damage and debuffing the targets
with
Closed Circuit, reducing healing received by 50%. This debuff
should be dispelled as quickly as possible, ideally via a
Priests
Mass Dispel, 1 for the Melee DPS and a 2nd for the Ranged group.
Positioning the Celestial Protector is the biggest challenge, as it must
remain inside the Inner Circle (where it will also benefit from Touch of the Titans)
while it is above 25%. If the Celestial Protector is moved to
the Outer Circle while above 25%, it gains
Phasing, reducing
all damage taken by 90% (you want to see the green buff
Phasing instead). Once the Celestial Protector reaches
25% health it will deal constant raid-wide damage via
Stability Flux
and should be dragged to the Outer Circle where it can be finished off.
Upon death, the Celestial Protector will cast Total Annihilation,
dealing damage to all players on the Outer Circle (where the add died). As
mentioned earlier, both the Outer and Inner Circles have a sort of "line-of-sight",
making it so if the
Total Annihilation goes off on the Outer Circle,
nobody in the Inner Circle will be damaged. On Heroic difficulty, the
Total Annihilation
must be soaked by at least 3 players, or a
Catastrophic Anomaly will
occur, causing a wipe. To survive this, make sure to use multiple defensive cooldowns
on the raid, as well as personal defensives such as
Deterrence or
Dispersion. The 3 players soaking the
Total Annihilation
will then be debuffed with
Destabilizing Energies, stunning them and
dealing damage every 2 seconds until the targets are healed above 80%
health. Lastly, the players soaking
Total Annihilation will also
become
Destabilized, preventing them from soaking additional
Total Annihilations for 2-minutes. The
Destabilized debuff
will require you to setup 2 or 3
Total Annihilation soaking groups
based on your groups damage; be sure to plan defensive cooldowns for each of
these soaks as this is when player deaths are most likely to occur.
Once Elegon reaches 85% and 50% health he will enter
Phase 2. During this phase Elegon will attempt to reactivate the
Celestial Engine powering his abilities by casting
Draw Power,
weakening himself to create 6
Energy Charge adds around him. These adds
will quickly move to each of the nearby Empyreal Focus, and if even a
single
Energy Charge reaches a Empyreal Focus it will reactivate
the engine and end Phase 2.
Keeping this in mind, the goal here is to keep Elegon in Phase 2 for
as long as possible; this is achieved by managing to kill all 6 Energy Charge
adds before they reach the Empyreal Focus engines on the Outer Circles.
If all 6 adds are killed in time, Elegon will gain a stack of
Draw Power, increasing his damage taken by 10% per stack
for the rest of the fight; Elegon will then recast
Draw Power,
creating 6 new
Energy Charge adds which must be killed again. While
Elegon will gain a stack of
Draw Power for each wave of
adds he creates, the
Energy Charge adds will also gain increased
movement speed for each wave defeated. This means that (depending on your raids
DPS), eventually it will not be possible to kill the adds before they reach the
engines, as they will simply be moving too quickly. This will typically occur
somewhere between 5-7 waves of
Energy Charge adds, depending on your
raids ability to properly split damage between all 6 adds. When your raid is reaching
a wave that you can not kill in time, the adds should be entirely ignored and
DPS should focus on burning down Elegon as much as possible.
Players will still need to manage their stacks of Overcharged
here, as the
Energy Charge deal raid-wide damage with
Discharge
upon death. Divide your DPS evenly where the
Energy Charge adds spawn
and along their traveling path as the goal here is to clear as many add waves
as possible, stacking up
Draw Power as much as possible on
Elegon. It is possible to briefly AoE the adds as soon as they spawn,
allowing you to get a quick burst of AoE damage out such as spreading DoTs to
all 6 adds instantly. Healers should also be helping out here to kill the
Energy Charges as it is crucial to debuff Elegon here as much
as possible to beat the enrage timer.
Phase 3 begins once a wave of
Energy Charge adds is not defeated, causing
the nearby Empyreal Focus engines to activate. Here, Elegon
will become immune to damage and will shatter the Inner Circle that players were
previously using; everyone must quickly move off the Inner Circle (you have
roughly 20-seconds to do so) or fall to their deaths. The 6 Empyreal Focus
will then create large walls of flames, preventing players from moving freely
towards each other. The raid must be evenly divided on each side, allowing DPS
players to evenly destroy all 6 Empyreal Focus engines. In addition,
adds will be constantly spawning in during this phase (Cosmic Sparks),
which should be picked up by a tank on either side and ignored by the DPS until
the Empyreal Focus have been dealt with. Afterwards, any remaining
Cosmic Sparks should be quickly AoEd down once the phase ends. Elegon
will target random areas with
Energy Cascade, creating a large circle
of Arcane energy that will explode after a few seconds of activation. Players must
quickly move out of these areas as these explosions are very deadly.
The main focus of Phase 3 should be to kill all 6 Empyreal Focus
engines as quickly as possible, ignoring the Cosmic Sparks until after
the phase ends. This will reduce the total number of Cosmic Sparks to
deal with, and increases the raids overall DPS as the adds can be AoE'd down much
easier with the Touch of the Titans buff once the Inner Circle platform
has returned. When all 6 Empyreal Focus have been killed, Elegon
will become vulnerable to damage again and begins the fight again in Phase 1.
Phase 1 will play out exactly the same as earlier, with Phase 2 beginning again
once Elegon reaches 50% health. Phase 2 will also play out exactly
the same again, with the raid needing to get as many stacks of Draw Power
on Elegon as possible. If your raid is able to consistently get six waves
of adds dead, we recommend using major DPS cooldowns here, such as
Bloodlust, to get an extra wave down and nuke Elegon as much
as possible. Phase 3 will occur afterwards, exactly the same as before, with
Elegon entering a soft-enrage after this second Phase 3 he goes through.
Here Elegon will use
Radiating Energies, dealing fatal damage
to any players on the Outer Circle. This requires all players to stack in the
middle and use any remaining DPS cooldowns and rotate defensive cooldowns to stay
alive and finish off Elegon.
