Tsulong Encounter Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
The Tsulong fight is a unique encounter where the boss shifts between two distinct phases — a Night Phase where, he’s a shadowy dragon trying to kill the raid, and a Day Phase, where you actually heal him to help him fight off the Sha corruption. It’s a mix of high-pressure DPS and healing requirements, depending on the phase. The alternating roles make the fight feel fresh and engaging, especially for healers, making this one of Mists of Pandarias most beloved fights.
Role-Specific Tips for Tsulong
DPS Tips
- Ranged DPS should spread out properly to prevent
Nightmares from hitting multiple players.
- Use personal defensive cooldowns if you have high stacks of
Dread Shadows.
- Killing priority adds is your main focus on this encounter. Ranged DPS especially need to swap to adds that spawn far away instantly, getting them as low as possible before they reach the middle platform.
Healer Tips
- Save major healing cooldowns for the Day Phase, where you can utilize increased
healing buffs such as
Bathed in Light.
- Assign a couple of healers to keeping the raid alive during the Day Phase,
as the adds will attack random players with
Unstable Bolt.
- Tanks will also take heavy damage during the Day Phase, be sure they have
a healer assigned to them, ideally via
Beacon of Light.
Tank Tips
- Be sure to tank swap properly after each
Shadow Breath, returning to behind Tsulong if you are not currently tanking.
- Positioning Tsulong is crucial during the Night Phase; You may
need to reposition to face Him away from
Sunbeams (if they spawn in front of Him).
- Be sure to reset your stacks of
Dread Shadows before you take over tanking, as you should not do this while tanking Tsulong, and
Shadow Breath increases all Shadow damage taken by 100%.
- Defensive cooldowns are mostly only needed to help reduce
Shadow Breaths damage, and while tanking the adds during the Day Phase. Rotate assignments between tanks as cooldowns become available.
Strategy for Tsulong
Tsulong is the second boss found in Terrace of Endless Springs and
presents a unique challenge across 2 Phases. Each Phase lasts exactly 2-minutes,
indicated by Tsulongs energy bar, which does not affect his abilities
in any way and is only a visual display for a Phase change. Tsulong
will start in Phase 1, henceforth referred to as the "Night Phase"; after 2-minutes
He will chance to Phase 2, referred to as "Day Phase" from now on. Each Night/Day
Phase lasts for exactly 2-minutes and will cycle back-and-forth until the boss
or raid is defeated.
Phase 1 - Night Phase
During the Night Phase Tsulong is attackable and behaves as a normal boss; during the Day Phase Tsulong becomes friendly, can not be attacked, and must instead be healed by the raid. Tsulongs health will invert each time he changes phases, meaning if you damaged Him down from 100% > 80% during the first Night Phase, he will invert his health during the Day Phase and start at 20% health. Healing him up from 20% > 40% health during the Day phase will cause him to start the Night Phase with 60% health. This will continue throughout the encounter, with Tsulongs health flipping to whatever his missing health % is at the start of each Phase.
To defeat Tsulong you must either reduce him to 0% health during the Night Phase, or heal him to 100% health during the Day Phase. Tsulong will hard-enrage after entering the third Night Phase, giving players a little over 8-minutes to defeat Him.
Tsulong will start in the Night Phase, lasting 2 minutes. Tanks will
need to deal with
Shadow Breath, a frontal-cone attack that
deals very high Shadow damage and increases all Shadow damage taken by 100%
for 30-seconds. This requires the tanks to use a defensive cooldown for each cast
of
Shadow Breath, as well as a tank-swap after each breath to
prevent the
Shadow Breath debuff from stacking up. Keep
Tsulong faced away from the raid at all times and be sure to stand
behind him if you are currently not tanking to avoid the debuff.
Every 15-seconds the raid will need to spread out to handle Nightmares, which
targets a few random Ranged players and creates a purplish circle under their
feet; after 3-seconds this circle explodes for high Shadow damage and fears anyone
still in the area. These can always be avoided by firstly having
the Ranged spread out in a half-circle behind Tsulong, being sure to
avoid being hit by
Shadow Breath, and having players quickly move
away from the indicated area of attack. If anyone should be hit by this, the fear
should be dispelled as soon as possible, but the goal should be to avoid this
spell every time.
Every 2-seconds during the Night Phase Tsulong will apply
Dread Shadows to the entire raid, dealing Shadow damage-over-time
and increasing damage taken from
Dread Shadows by 10% per
stack, quickly stacking up on all players. Tanks debuffed by
Shadow Breath
will take an additional 100% damage from
Dread Shadows,
requiring extra attention from Healers.
To counter the ever stacking Dread Shadow Ring DoT, Tsulong
will create a
Sunbeam at a random location near him; players that
run into the
Sunbeam will have all stacks of
Dread Shadows
removed, but the size of the
Sunbeam will shrink as more players
use it. This limits the number of players that can use each
Sunbeam,
as it will eventually despawn once it has shrunken down small enough in size.
A new
Sunbeams will be created approximately every 40-seconds,
resetting in size and causing the previous
Sunbeam to despawn
(if it is still alive).
While running to the Sunbeam be aware of Tsulongs
positioning, as the tanks will need to react first and face him in a different
direction if the
Sunbeam spawns directly in front of him. Ranged
players will also need to be aware of
Nightmares timer, as too
many players running at the same time to the
Sunbeam will cause
Nightmaress to spawn on top of several players. We recommend having
groups of players rotate going into the
Sunbeam at around
16-18 stacks of
Dread Shadows, using personal defensive cooldowns
as needed to survive. This will prevent
Nightmares from being
created on top of the
Sunbeam, as well as keeping the
Sunbeam
alive as long as possible, allowing more players to reset their stacks freely.
After 2-minutes the Night Phase will end and Tsulong will enter the Day Phase, lasting 2-minutes as well before returning to the Night Phase once again.
Night Phase - Heroic
On Heroic difficulty the Night Phase adds an additional challenge with the
The Dark of Night adds that spawn every 30-seconds; these adds spawn
around the room in random locations, and fixate on the Sunbeam.
If the adds reach the
Sunbeam, even a single one, the
Sunbeam
will instantly despawn, preventing players from resetting
Dread Shadows
stacks until the next
Sunbeam spawns. DPS must prioritize the
The Dark of Night adds as soon as they spawn, using any and all available
stuns/slows/knock backs/etc. to prevent the adds from reaching the
Sunbeam.
These adds have very low health, and as mentioned are susceptible to all forms
of crowd control and displacement; utilizing multiple forms of knock back here
will make this part of the fight significantly easier.
Always be mindful of Tsulongs positioning and never run in front
of him to damage the adds, as this puts you at risk of dying to Shadow Breath.
DPS should prioritize the The Dark of Night adds that spawn closest to
the
Sunbeam, as they spawn in random locations and it's possible
for them to spawn right next to the
Sunbeam, despawning it
immediately. These adds should immediately be knocked back and slowed, if
possible, as the DPS quickly nuke them down.
Phase 2 - Day Phase
After exactly 2-minutes the Night Phase will end and the Day Phase will begin,
which also lasts for exactly 2-minutes. During this Phase Tsulong can
not be attacked, as we described earlier, and must instead be healed by your
Healers with the goal of healing him to full health. The raid should stack up in front of Tsulong, depending on the
direction he turns to face, as he will use a new frontal-cone attack
Sun Breath.
Sun Breath deals extremely high damage
to all enemies in the area and stuns them for 8-seconds; this is needed to help
kill all of the adds that spawn during this Phase (more on those shortly).
Friendly targets hit by
Sun Breath (meaning your raid) will gain
the
Bathed in Light buff, increasing healing done by 500% for
6-seconds and restores 25% total resources (including Rage/Energy/etc)
over the same duration. This increased
healing done by 500% is crucial for beating the boss, and every single
healer must make sure they get hit by every
Sun Breath that
Tsulong casts.
DPS players will be focusing on dealing with the 3 types of adds that spawn
throughout the fight, as Tsulong is friendly during this Phase. Every
18-seconds 8 Unstable Sha adds will spawn around the room; the location
these adds will spawn at is indicated by a visible projectile that Tsulong
will shoot out. The Unstable Shas will fixate on Tsulong himself
and attempt to reach him, where they will deal 500,000 Shadow damage to him and
die; with the goal being to heal Tsulong to full health, this must be
prevented by killing the Unstable Sha adds before they can reach
Tsulong. If needed, use crowd control and knock backs to prevent them
from reaching Tsulong, but this should not be an issue as they have
very little health. While moving the Unstable Shas will cast
Unstable Bolt, dealing high Shadow damage to a random player, while
costing the add 15% life; this helps kill them as they move, just be sure
the raid gets topped up as taking multiple
Unstable Bolts in a row
will easily kill DPS players.
Every 40-seconds a Embodied Terror will spawn, which must be
tanked in front of Tsulong; this Embodied Terror will use
Terrorize every 15-20 seconds, debuffing Tsulong and
random players (2 on 10-man, 5 on 25-man). This debuff causes Tsulong
to take 5% of his max health every second, and players will take 50%
of their current health as Shadow damage per seconds. The priority here is to
dispel everyone as soon as possible, with someone assigned to dispelling
Terrorize off of Tsulong instantly to prevent Him from
taking any damage at all. A
Mass Dispel is great for this, but we
recommend having a single-target dispel ready and waiting to dispel Tsulong
himself.
When the Embodied Terror dies it will spawn 5 of the last add,
Fright Spawns. These 5 adds should be picked up quickly by a tank and
faced away from the raid, as they have a frontal-cone breath attack Fright,
which deals high Shadow damage and fears any player hit. The goal is to kill
the Embodied Terror before
Sun Breath, allowing the damage
from
Sun Breath to hit the Fright Spawns and nearly
instantly kill them. This will not always be possible as the timers won't always
line up, and DPS will vary from week to week. Dispel any fears that go out if
Fright is cast, but your goal here is to AoE the Fright Spawns
down before they can get any casts off, utilizing stuns and knock backs to
interrupt their casts.
Use major healing cooldowns while buffed with Bathed in Light to heal
Tsulong as much as possible, while DPS keep all of the adds under
control. Prevent the Unstable Shas from reaching the boss, and quickly
AoE down the Fright Spawns to stop them from casting any
Frights. After 2-minutes Tsulong will enter the Night Phase,
repeating the earlier phase once more; this cycle repeats twice, with
Tsulong hard-enraging shortly after entering the third Night Phase.
Day Phase - Heroic
Heroic difficulty only adds a single new ability, The Light of Day;
these are "floating balls of light" that spawn around the room in random locations.
Clicking on a ball of light will grant The Light of Day buff,
increasing healing done for 6-seconds and restoring mana over the duration; the
mana restored will increase with each tick of the buff, while the healing
increase bonus will decrease with each tick.
The Light of Day
buff does not stack with Tsulongs
Bathed in Light buff, preventing
you from gaining multiple multiplicative buffs at once.
Be aware of the Sun Breath timer and save The Light of Day
balls of light between the breaths, giving your Healers the most possible bonus
healing buff uptime. Remember that
The Light of Day buff grants the
highest bonus healing at the start of the buff, and decreases said bonus over
time, so use your major healing spells right away after clicking the ball of
light to gain the highest benefit.
