Gogmazios Combat Guide
Despite his massive size and Elder Dragon status, Gogmazios isn’t as difficult as he initially appears. In fact, the first two phases of the battle are heavily scripted. It’s the third and final phase that poses the real threat. You must be Hunter Rank 100 or higher to unlock his quest—otherwise, the hunt won’t be available to you.
Gogmazios is only vulnerable to blastblight and stun status effects. In terms of elemental weaknesses, he takes more damage from both fire and dragon elements, although we’ll dive deeper into that shortly. Since he’s an Elder Dragon, you won’t be able to use traps or bombs—your only option is to slay him. With that in mind, let’s break down the fight starting with Phase One.
Phase One
The first phase is fairly simple. Focus your attacks on his wingarms or his face whenever the opportunity presents itself. Start with a fire elemental weapon to soften him up. Once oil begins dripping from his body, immediately switch to a dragon elemental weapon to maximize your damage output. The idea is to weaken with fire, then follow through with dragon.
That said, if you’re consistently landing hits and avoiding damage, it won’t make a massive difference which element you stick with throughout the fight. If you’re using an elemental weapon, be sure it’s something fast like a Longsword, Dual Blades, Switch Axe, or Charge Blade. Slower weapons aren’t as effective at dealing consistent elemental damage.
As for his attacks, his most dangerous move in this phase is a massive slam. He’ll raise his whole body and come crashing down using both his front legs and wingarms. When you see this, stop attacking and either run behind him or move far to the sides. This attack can one shot you if you’re caught underneath. However, if you’re directly behind him, watch for a tail spin attack meant to swat you away. Staying behind him in this phase isn’t ideal since you won’t deal much damage to his tail.
Keep an eye on his face. Occasionally, he’ll move his head from side to side and spew oil across the arena. It’s not a lethal move, but it does a lot of damage and can knock you back. Try to stay behind his head when this happens. He also has a variant of this where he vomits oil directly forward. This is actually good RNG as it gives you a chance to get several hits in on his face or wingarms. If you're using a hammer, this is the time to go for a knockout.
Repeat this pattern until he lights up the room, signalling the start of Phase Two. At this point, you’ll be forced to scale a nearby wall to continue the fight.
Phase Two
This is by far the easiest phase. Gogmazios will raise his wingarms onto a ledge and attempt to swipe at you while staying mostly stationary. Your goal here is to deal enough damage to knock him down and force out the massive siege weapon embedded in his back.
Be cautious of laser blasts and fire explosions, but overall, this segment is quite manageable. Once you’ve dislodged the railgun from his body, you’ll be prompted to connect three cables to it. Head over to the wires along the back wall, press the interaction button (Circle or the appropriate key for your controller), and drag each cable to the weapon to plug it in. Movement is slow while carrying the wires, but you can still dodge roll if you have enough stamina.
Support hunters are highly recommended here if you’re playing solo. They can help carry the cables while you focus on staying alive. Once all three wires are connected, the weapon will begin charging. When it's fully charged, the game will let you know. You can then go up to the weapon and fire it at Gogmazios. If he happens to be on the opposite side of the platform, use the lever to rotate the weapon and reposition it. A fully charged shot deals over 67000 damage and will likely force the transition to Phase Three.
Phase Three
At the start of this final phase, immediately fast travel back to camp to restock on potions and other supplies. Gogmazios will now be airborne, and you’ll see shimmering blue shards on the ground. These shards are used as special slinger ammo and are crucial for progressing past the damage check in this phase.
Pick up the shards and aim for the tail, wingarms, or head. The tail is the largest and easiest target. Hold down your slinger button to fully charge each shot. A well aimed, fully charged shot will deal around 500 orange damage. Each shard gives you two shots, so don’t waste them. Keep gathering and firing slinger ammo until the ground supply runs dry, then transition to your regular weapon.
If Gogmazios stays in the air, position yourself directly beneath him while avoiding the laser attacks and exploding fire puddles. This is a good opportunity to focus on his tail. You can actually sever it in this phase for bonus materials. Eventually, he’ll drop to the ground and resume many of his attacks from Phase One, but now the tail is a vulnerable and highly valuable target. Keep hitting it until it’s chopped off.
As the battle progresses and Gogmazios begins to lose health, he’ll move to the center of the arena and start coiling up. This signals a massive fire based attack. This is your cue to switch back to your dragon elemental weapon and deal as much damage as possible before the meteor phase begins. This is free damage time, so hit any part of him you can reach.
Soon, the ground will begin glowing orange. That’s your signal to get out of the blast zone. If you’ve done enough damage during the window, Fabius will raise his shield and protect you from the meteor barrage. Hop on your Seikret and run behind him. This is your chance to sharpen your weapon and heal up.
If you didn’t pass the damage check and Fabius doesn’t raise the shield, there’s a small cliff you can climb to avoid the meteor damage. However, this cliff can only be used once and will collapse after the first meteor wave. Repeat the damage cycles until Gogmazios is finally slain.
Conclusion
The Gogmazios fight is more of a semi-siege battle than a traditional hunt. About three-quarters of the experience involves scripted mechanics, and only a small part is an actual slugfest. Once you’re familiar with his patterns, the fight becomes very manageable.
It’s entirely possible to solo Gogmazios if you’re confident in your dodging and damage output. That said, if you’re struggling, bring support hunters or team up with other players. Most importantly, use the weapon you’re most comfortable with. Weapon familiarity always trumps a slight elemental advantage in fights like these.
While the dragon element plays a larger role in the final phase, it’s not mandatory if you’re skilled enough to meet the damage checks. And that, hunter, is how you bring down Gogmazios.
