1. Remark

Given the highly unusual nature of Cho'gall, this section of the guide has been exceptionally written with both Cho and Gall in mind.

2. Heroes Cho'gall Works Well With

In this section, we will look at Heroes that work particularly well with Cho'gall.

2.1. Johanna

Johanna Portrait For Cho'gall, Johanna's usefulness is twofold: first, her skillset allows her to effectively initiate and peel, two important tasks which Cho'gall does not particularly excel at. The role of a tank is especially important for one of Cho'gall's teammates to fulfil, as they take up two Hero spots on any given team. Second, her Condemn Icon Condemn ability can be used to forcefully group up several opponents for Gall's area of effect abilities to wreak havoc upon.

2.2. Tassadar

Tassadar Portrait Tassadar's Plasma Shield Icon Plasma Shield has some of the highest mitigation-per-cooldown value of any Support Hero. This is particularly valuable to Cho'gall, whose large Health pool allows to survive between Plasma Shield applications. Furthermore, Tassadar's relative independence, in terms of survival, means that Cho'gall can focus on attacking rather than constantly have to protect the Support. Finally, Force Wall Icon Force Wall reliably keeps opponents within range, or can be used to peel. Both of these functions are important to Cho'gall.

2.3. Uther

Uther Portrait Although Uther is generally a strong healer to have, Cho'gall often find themselves the prey of strong crowd control effects. Uther's Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield Heroic Ability and Cleanse Icon Cleanse talent are particularly well suited to palliate this weakness.

3. Heroes Gall Is Countered By

In this section, we will look at Heroes that counter Cho'gall particularly well.

3.1. Brightwing

Brightwing Portrait Brightwing is an excellent counterpick versus Cho'gall for three reasons. First, her special Mount, Phase Shift Icon Phase Shift, makes it difficult for Cho'gall to isolate Heroes in a 2v1 situation. Second, her Trait, Soothing Mist Icon Soothing Mist, heals in a large area of effect, mitigating much of Gall's area of effect damage. Third, Polymorph Icon Polymorph is an excessively reliable form of crowd control that affects both Cho and Gall despite being single-target, doubling its value.

3.1.1. How To Play Against Brightwing

Avoid being baited into fighting 2v1 situations unless you are certain that Brightwing has recently used her Phase Shift Icon Phase Shift. In team fighting situations, focus on taking down one target rather than maximising your area of effect damage so as to minimise the effects of her Soothing Mist Icon Soothing Mist. The Cho player could even consider, exceptionally, picking The Will Of Gall Icon The Will Of Gall talent so as to break and avoid Rewound Polymorph Icon Polymorph chains.

3.2. Illidan

Illidan Portrait Illidan's multiple dashing abilities (Dive Icon Dive and Sweeping Strike Icon Sweeping Strike) allows him to offhandedly avoid Gall's abilities. From Hero Level 13 and on, Illidan will shred through Cho'gall's large Health pool, thanks to Fiery Brand Icon Fiery Brand and a very fast attack speed.

3.2.1. How To Play Against Illidan

Since crowd control is key to taking down Illidan, Hammer of Twilight Icon Hammer of Twilight should be the Heroic Ability of choice against him. The Gall player should account for Illidan's two dashes when trying to hit him with abilities, opting to hold onto his cooldown to secure hits rather than try and maximise his cooldown usage. Do not ever waste Shadow Bolt Volley Icon Shadow Bolt Volley against Illidan, as it will certainly be dodged entirely.

3.3. Leoric

Leoric Portrait Leoric has several means of dealing Health total-based damage: Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope, Crushing Hope Icon Crushing Hope, from Hero Level 13 and on, and Spectral Leech Icon Spectral Leech at Hero Level 20. Needless to say the combination of these talents and abilities is extremely effective against Cho'gall's large Health pool. Furthermore, Entomb Icon Entomb is inescapable for Cho'gall, and may even block off an attempt at escaping with Surging Fist Icon Surging Fist.

3.3.1. How To Play Against Leoric

There is little you can do against Leoric, especially after he has reached Hero Level 20; he is an extremely hard counter to Cho'gall, and one of the main reasons why Cho'gall should never be drafted early. Surging Fist Icon Surging Fist can be used to rapidly get out of Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope's range, and Molten Block Icon Molten Block should exclusively be held onto for situations where you may find yourself the victim of Entomb Icon Entomb.

3.4. Raynor

Raynor Portrait Raynor is where relative resilience meets a strong, long-ranged Basic Attack, against which Cho'gall struggles. From Hero Level 13 and on, Raynor acquires Giant Killer Icon Giant Killer which, when m combined with Inspire Icon Inspire, decimates Cho'gall. Penetrating Round Icon Penetrating Round can readily be used to interrupt Surging Fist Icon Surging Fist as well.

3.4.1. How To Play Against Raynor

Raynor is another hard counter to Cho'gall. Fortunately, he does not have a self-displacement ability to escape an Upheaval Icon Upheaval + Shadow Bolt Volley Icon Shadow Bolt Volley combo, making him potentially killable should he be out of position. Speaking of positioning, you should avoid standing where Raynor is able to get "free" Basic Attacks against you, which is to say, to avoid playing as a frontliner.

3.5. The Butcher

The Butcher Portrait The Butcher is one of the Heroes that is capable of taking Cho'gall on, and this, with much ease, thanks to his outrageous damage output and the Butcher's Brand Icon Butcher's Brand ability. Lamb to the Slaughter Icon Lamb to the Slaughter can also exceptionally be used to lock Cho'gall down for an extended period of time.

3.5.1. How To Play Against The Butcher

Avoid dueling The Butcher at all cost. If you are affected by his Butcher's Brand Icon Butcher's Brand, Surging Fist Icon Surging Fist should be used to run away. Since The Butcher does need to be within melee range to deal any amount of damage, consider punishing him with your Heroic Abilities then. Hammer of Twilight Icon Hammer of Twilight is particularly good to get him off your back.
