Blue Mage Job Guide — Endwalker 6.4
Blue Mage is a magical ranged limited job in Final Fantasy XIV that specializes in learning the spells of the enemies they've defeated in the past. This job can play all three roles in the game, tank, healer or DPS. Blue Mage starts at level 1 and can be played by doing the prerequisite questline in Limsa Lominsa, while also having another combat job at level 50 or higher.
What is Blue Mage's Playstyle?
Blue Mage is a Limited job that falls under the caster DPS role. Blue Mage has a very unique design compared to other jobs in FFXIV. Rather than learning new spells while leveling up, Blue Mage learns new spells from defeating specific monsters. Because it is classified as a Limited job, it has some restrictions on playing with others. However, this also means that Blue Mage is very flexible and capable of playing as all three major roles, those being tank, healer and DPS. Before discussing this in greater detail, it's important to understand what the Limited job restrictions actually are.
What is a Limited Job in FFXIV?
- Limited jobs start at level 1 and have a maximum level of 70.
- Limited jobs are unable to use Duty Finder matchmaking. They can use the Duty Finder, but it must be with a pre-formed party.
- Limited jobs are unable to enter certain types of duties, such as Eureka, Squadron missions, Deep Dungeons, PvP, and Ultimate raids.
- Limited jobs gain significantly more experience from defeating enemies in the open world compared to other jobs. This bonus does not apply to enemies that are part of FATEs or inside duties.
- Limited jobs cannot be used to advance the Main Scenario Questline.
These restrictions mean that Blue Mage gameplay operates very
independently from the rest of the game and is its own game-within-the-game.
Since it is restricted from doing certain content, it also means it is free
from some restrictions and able to do things that other jobs cannot do. Blue
Mage has access to some silly abilities like Level 5 Death
which instantly kills enemies,
Diamondback which reduces
all damage taken by 90% (this is more powerful than tank LB3!), and
Final Sting which deals a whopping 2,000 potency... but
kills the user.
Blue Mage has its own set of exclusive content through the Masked
Carnivale, has achievements for completing content synced with full parties
of Blue Mages, and is also how players can obtain the Morbol Horn,
allowing players to summon the Morbol mount, as a reward for completing a
set of Savage raids as a party of full Blue Mages!

Level 80 Update (Patch 6.45)
In the Patch 6.4 Live Letter we got confirmation of the long-awaited level 80 BLU update! With this patch we will be going into Shadowbringers areas to learn new spells. The patch will also contain updates to the Masked Carnivale and new "Mightier Than" achievements for the Shadowbringers Extreme and Savage fights. Right now we only know what the new job gear will look like and two previews of spells, but this page will be updated as new information is obtained, so stay tuned!
How do you unlock Blue Mage?
Blue Mage can be unlocked once you have reached level 50 on a Disciple of War or Magic job and completed the main scenario quest "The Ultimate Weapon." Once these requirements are met the quest "Out of the Blue" is offered by Zealous Yellowjacket in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (x:9.9, y:11.0). Completing this quest will reward you the Blue Mage job stone and allow you to play as Blue Mage starting at level 1

Blue Mage Lore
A so-called mage of rather questionable character claims to have mastered an outlandish form of spellcasting that resembles neither black nor white magic during his voyage to the New World. Allegedly, anyone who purchases one of his soul crystals can learn to mimic the aetherial magicks of wild creatures. But can he be trusted, or is he merely a con artist looking to make a quick gil?
