The Ageless Necropolis Trial Guide
Welcome to our guide to Recollection, the fifth normal trial of Dawntrail released in Patch 7.3 The Promise of Tomorrow. This guide aims to prepare players for the encounter so they will know what to expect, with simple mechanic instructions and notes on what to watch out for.
Introduction to The Ageless Necropolis

By entrusting their memories of departed loved ones to the cloud, Alexandrians have long escaped the grief of separation. Being thus forced to confront the realities of mortal existence, what then filled their hearts was a dark and unreasoning terror. Harnessing this heightened fear of death for his own ends, a genius of an age gone by now channels the people's desperate prayers for succor into a new primal incarnation. It falls to the Warrior of Light to stand unflinching in the face of fear-made-manifest, and claim victory over this inexorable entity.
Unlock Requirements
The Ageless Necropolis can be unlocked in Patch 7.3 during the main scenario quest "A Terminal Invitation." It is the fifth normal trial players will encounter in Dawntrail and is located in Living Memory. Players above Level 100 will be level synced to Level 100 when entering.
Necron Trial Guide
Phase One
Necron is fought on a raised square platform. Players can fall off the arena.
Phase One Mechanics
Necron introduces the following mechanics in the first phase.
- Fear of Death: Raidwide magic damage. Spawns puddles that grasping arms grow out of. These point towards a direction, shooting a line AoE.
- Cold Grip: The boss slams the sides of the arena, and one arms glows while casting. Necron will slam that side again afterwards, so dodge into the opposite side.
- Memento Mori: Line AoE down the middle. This creates a puddle that grasping arms grow out of, which cast the same line AoE (Choking Grasp) as Fear of Death.
- Blue Shockwave: A large conal magic tank buster on the main tank. They should move towards a corner to avoid clipping the party.
- Soul Reaping: Necron shows a donut or a circle, then saves it for later.
- Aetherblight: Casts the saved donut AoE or circle AoE.
- Grand Cross: Shrinks the arena into a circle. Deals large AoE damage.
- Azure Aether: Spinning orbs that shoot a line AoE that the end of their countdown.
- Grand Cross: Proximity damage line AoEs. Go to an intercardinal.
- Neutron Ring: Heavy raidwide magic damage. Returns the arena to normal.
Phase One Strategy
- Phase one introduces mechanics that are relevant later. Learn the tells and dodge all the AoEs.
- The Grand Cross mini-phase is accompanied by several ground AoEs and line AoEs. Stay on the move and dodge as much as possible to avoid vuln stacks for the proximity AoEs that come after.
Phase Two
Phase two is the adds phase of the fight.
Phase Two Mechanics
Necron becomes invulnerable and untargetable. It spawns several Icy Hands adds that must be killed before its Rising Fear of Death gauge reaches 100. These target onto a player and shoot a line AoE at them. It then uses its ultimate ability, Darkness of Eternity. This deals heavy raidwide magic damage and sends all players to the abyss.
In the abyss, all players are separated on circular platforms. They are inflicted with a 40 second uncleansable Doom debuff, and three Icy Hands adds spawn. These must be killed to unlock a jumping pad: jump to the top to be cleansed and return to the arena. If players do not reach the top in time, they will die. The boss aggro resets and phase three begins.
Phase Three
You fight Necron in the final phase until it is defeated.
Phase Three Mechanics
Necron introduces the following mechanics in the final phase.
- Specter of Death: Summons two giant arms at the edge of the arena. These do a large line AoE across, leaving a safe lane.
- Relentless Reaping: Necron casts Soul Reaping four times in a row, with the cast stored indicated by the number of diamonds.
- Crop Rotation: Rotates the stored Reaping abilities.
- Seasons of Blight: Casts Aetherblight four times in a row: once for each Reaping cast stored.
- Mass Macabre: Summons four portals on the ground. These must be sealed by having four players stand inside one at once.
Phase Three Strategy
- Necron begins to combine abilities and introduces a few new ones. It begins by casting Specter of Death into Cold Grip.
- The main mechanic introduced in the final phase is Relentless Reaping. Necron will store four AoEs: two donut AoEs and two point-blank AoEs. The order they resolve will be randomized with Crop Rotation and cast with Seasons of Blight.
- Remember the order of AoEs (e.g. "in out in out"). The number of diamonds indicates which AoE will be cast. If it starts on the 2 diamond AoE and goes 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 1, we know that it will be out, then in, then out, then in.
- Mass Macabre is accompanied by Fear of Death. It is probably easier to move as an entire party and seal each portal individually to ensure no portal is missing a member. There is plenty of time.
- Next, Soul Reaping stores a cast that is saved for after Memento Mori and Blue Shockwave. Remember the cast and dodge in or out.
- After one final Grand Cross phase, the fight will repeat until Necron is killed.
Rewards
Completion of this duty rewards 12 Allagan Tomestones of Heliometry and 7 Allagan Tomestones of Mathematics. There is a rare chance to receive the Necron Triple Triad card.
